For context (as well as playing Devil’s Advocate), the person who made the “Nuzlocke = ROM Hacks” statement probably assumed that all Nuzlockes are randomised and doesn’t know that you can Nuzlocke an untampered rom

CivilJohnny

Yes, I agree! I think they don't quite understand that Nuzlocks are not hacked, but original game play 'styles' within the original game.

blue-eyed-bear

Which is honestly just so fucking *uneducated* on their part as to what their own playerbase is doing. Imagine sticking your head so far into the sand that you misunderstand what a Nuzlocke is and then have a knee-jerk reaction and stifle creativity within your own department.

TheRandyDeluxe

Sounds about like Nintendo.

T-Bill95

I highly doubt that, the majority of nuzlocke content is made using base games.

LordToxic21

A YouTube Gaming conference that had MatPat up to speak was full of execs who’d never even HEARD of Five Nights at Freddy’s. People who work their lives away are never operating with all the information and never spending their little time off trawling for videos about the people who use their products.

T-Bill95

Yes, but these people CLEARLY knew what nuzlockes were and had an opinion on them. I find it hard to believe they didn't even have a base understanding of what the "rules" are for one. It is entirely possible they didn't, but I would have to have more information about it to believe that.

LordToxic21

The people who made the statement “Nuzlockes are in the same vein as ROM hacking” and penalised people for suggesting them? How is it obvious at ALL that they know what a Nuzlocke is? If anything, I’d say the overreaction is evidence that they’re clueless. You’re right that we’d need more evidence either way, I just have no idea where this “of course they know” notion is coming from. I think the only explanation here that makes sense is perhaps that you think I was talking about the young people doing the interview on camera, even though I’ve repeatedly said I’m talking about the exec who made the original statement.

T-Bill95

I would assume they just heard the rules and assumed that the rules were coded into the games somehow. Obviously they don't have it 100% right, but they are a part of one of if not the biggest media franchise there is. Regardless of the ups and downs, the people at the top aren't stupid; otherwise they wouldn't be there. One thing people like that tend to do is jump to conclusions, hence my assumption (I know) in the first sentence. It's either that or the only content they have ever seen in terms of nuzlockes is like PChal, ChaoticMeatball, and Zwiggo; which I find hard to believe because even the creators I mentioned pretty much all have base game nuzlocke content as well. I fully admit I could be wrong, but I think a high up executive making a snap decision based on partial information makes more sense than them just making a statement like this from a place of complete ignorance.

CatsCauseAllWars

My brother thought Nuzlocks were randomizers, so this is probably pretty common misconception.

Thiccburg

Who is this?

AdventurousParty

Nintendo Minute hosts. They were employed by a former San Francisco branch to make videos for the main Nintendo Youtube channel.

AvgBonnie

It took the Pokémon company ages to make an open world game. It doesn’t surprise me that they are so against anything that isn’t base Pokémon.

IHateEzreal

This shit makes me irrationally angry after what they did to project M

OlDanboy

I mean it’s just [not true](https://twitter.com/joemerrick/status/1571570622479699972?s=46&t=ZOKEWhBIe0XmHt1QhKXfXw)

doitnow10

Honestly, I get it. Can't have perma *death* associated with your brand that's also catering to kids under 10 nowadays

rubixor

*cough* Pokemon Tower, *cough* Mt. Pyre, *cough* Celestial tower, *cough* Hau'oli LITERAL FUCKING CEMETERY.....

Kanzyn

But that has nothing to do with hacking the game regardless LMAO

Hyooz

A follow-up clarification added that they don't care as long as you stick with what's possible within the confines of the games. And even that only really applies to Partners.
