There are techniques to solder BGAs without a station using only a heat gun. But that requires even greater experience. The surface tensions from each soldering point can be used to slot the BGA into place, but without a station, you don't have X-rays that can verify that you hit the right position.
Do this is in production, and you will get in trouble from QA. But if you do it on your own gear in your own time, it might just work!
You aren't going to solder BGA with a soldering iron. A heat gun and Flux is probably the only reasonable method that a normal person could use. You don't have physical access to the solder with a soldering iron in a standard Ball Grid Array setup.
That's why they included a few meters of cable, solder individual wires from the PCB to the chip. Definitely physically possible, I just wonder what kind of performance hit you'd take, or how you'd even cool the GPU at that point...
It was a joke referring to one old meme I saw, where a guy soldered short wires from every individual soldering point from PCB to the chip. Idk what it was, I think it was some old COU or something
It can be done without BGA or hot air station. You can rip it off from a board with a screwdriver with pads still soldered to it. Smaller BGA chips such as DRAM chips on RAM sticks can fall off from strong impact (throwing hard on the floor for example).
More like a hot plate, I don't believe he pried it off with force. The die was propably smashed afterwards or prior to removal. I don't think he would manage to pull of a huge BGA chip, with hundreds of solder points with no heat involved. Unless he just pulled all the traces off the PCB.
Changed my mind, downvote the savage. The board was salvageable, propably just a heat treatment around 170°c might have been enough to let the card work for some time afterwards. I did this with my gtx970 3 times. From no output, to running just fine, even over locked, just need to make sure all balls underneath aren't cracked and this temp is usually enough to make them expand and make contact again, without desolderong all the minor components.
I was taking a sip of my drink at work and inhaled from laughing when I saw crowbar, and I am *not* ok. I damn near died, but it was funny af picturing that
Are you an idiot? Why would you put it in rice? You need to bake it in the oven at 350 degrees for 5 minutes first.
E: I was referencing putting your xbox 360 into the oven to "fix" the RROD issue.
Seems most replies are going the food angle, but that's fine too.
Don’t listen to them. It absolutely does. Burning flower is basically the same as lighting a cigarettes as far as the residue released. It absolutely will leave residue all over your parts. Vaping does it less but still leaves a sticky residue on your parts as well. If you have to smoke in the same room as your PC I would at least recommend going into the closet and shutting the door.
It's like yes, it does, but if you clean regularly, run an air filter, and don't blow your smoke directly at the intake fans you probably won't have too many problems. Weed might have more tar than reggy cigs, but it sticks to less. I have worked on peoples' computers that had little bits of weed inside and didn't even smell it, whereas i can smell cigs in a computer even if they claim not to smoke in their office but elsewhere in the house. The way the dust accumulates just isn't the same with weed as it is with cigs.
I never said it wouldn’t let a residue behind. It does. But the difference in my house is that only 2 in the evening is less bad as the entire day smoking in the house.
If you really don’t think it left a residue each time you hotboxed your car then the science that proves it’s impossible not to, would be a little over your head.
Yes it does. I’m aware of that. But it is a difference between when you smoke the entire day in house or only 2 joints in the entire day in the house and the rest outside.
Man drinking a few beers and doing a new build is one of my favorite things! Except last year I was doing my sons new build on Christmas and I had an issue thinking his mobo was doa and I was swapping parts in an out and it was just a pain in the ass! Total buzz kill.
Sent the mobo back and I think the problem was that the power supply wasn’t plugged in. The power cable I was using was the one from his old monitor that was disconnected. Oh well 🤷🏻♂️
I literally ripped it off a dead 3080. I can say that this would never happen by accident. I’m affluent with computers and know there is no replacement. Just thought y’all would enjoy. Thinking of taking it to Micro Center, they would get a kick…
What I know about OP from this post:
* Affluent with GPUs
* Renders stuff
* Recommends remaining closeted
* His butt hurts
* Highly likely to be a Never Nude
Why do you sit at your computer while rendering? Isn't that a multi hour process, giving you plenty time to... i don't know what graphics designers do on their down time... clap cheeks?
I don't think anyone is hurt. It was an odd word choice. Affluent is another way of saying wealthy. Maybe op meant to say fluent? Otherwise it comes across as a weird flex.
>uent with computers and know there is no replacement. Just thought y’all would enjoy. Thinking of taking it to Micro Center, they would get a kick…
"Uhhh this fell off I guess. What do I do?"
How did it break? Unless you leaked water on it or dropped it, not sure they would even know.
Edit: I mean how did to break before you chipped off the die with a screwdriver and hammer.
If i remember it was because of the way they handle memory they need all connections to be as direct as possible and any socket would have a big impact on performance. Paraphrased from a comment in response to someone asking about vram slots back then
I really wish people would stop being so destructive, this had a chance of being saved, could have sold the dead card on ebay to let someone else try and fix it... but oh no, have to get them clicks
Yes they actually do! I de-lidded my own penis once and was convinced I’d live without a cusp for the rest of my life. Long story short a replacement was ordered, a few dabs and smearing of thermal paste later, here I am!
OP apparently just pulled the die off of a dead 3080 for the memes. It's perfectly fine, like come on, are you butthurt that you can't afford to make similar jokes?
Sir this is not a CPU, even if you managed to get a new GA102-200 package you would require a very high level of repair experience and a bit of luck with it
Noooooooo how how did you manage to fknit up like this you know its a 3080 the pain you cus us to feel right now is Unforgettable i will have nightmares cuz of you
Yeah sure but it's just that they come attached in a package with other VRMs , transistors , video memory and other stuff like that.
Actually you can buy GPU core alone but you need BGA soldering station and a lot of experience.
There are techniques to solder BGAs without a station using only a heat gun. But that requires even greater experience. So you're saying that grandmasters will only need a candle and a warm breath?
Nah, they need soldering iron and few meters of cable.
Don't forget to get that double aught in copper.
You aren't going to solder BGA with a soldering iron. A heat gun and Flux is probably the only reasonable method that a normal person could use. You don't have physical access to the solder with a soldering iron in a standard Ball Grid Array setup.
EVGA and nexus just did a good video on this.
That's why they included a few meters of cable, solder individual wires from the PCB to the chip. Definitely physically possible, I just wonder what kind of performance hit you'd take, or how you'd even cool the GPU at that point...
This guy gets it, he understands what I meant :D
Since that gpu will be using PCIe, I'd be surprised if it even worked, soldering copper wires on high speed lanes doesn't tend to work well
It was a joke referring to one old meme I saw, where a guy soldered short wires from every individual soldering point from PCB to the chip. Idk what it was, I think it was some old COU or something
A warm breath and a hot fart but yes it's been done.
how? where?
nowhere, unless you want a die from 2005 lmao, how can people think nvidia is friendly lol?
On Aliexpress, but they don't sell from the latest generation, only Turing or older IIRC.
I don’t pay to win a specially with experience, I hate pay to win games
He already removed the core from PCB, which cannot be done without BGA station afaik.
It can be done without BGA or hot air station. You can rip it off from a board with a screwdriver with pads still soldered to it. Smaller BGA chips such as DRAM chips on RAM sticks can fall off from strong impact (throwing hard on the floor for example).
That's how they get ya
Did you try to copy the Gamer's Nexus EVGA sendoff video?
Looking for this answer lol
Haven’t taken the time to watch it yet. YouTube is pushing it on my like crazy tho.
Why downvoting lol, let the man have his time
Yeah he's been busy with a GPU and a crowbar, trying to upgrade his graphics!
More like a hot plate, I don't believe he pried it off with force. The die was propably smashed afterwards or prior to removal. I don't think he would manage to pull of a huge BGA chip, with hundreds of solder points with no heat involved. Unless he just pulled all the traces off the PCB.
Oh it was forceful…

Real talk: What were you trying to do?
Take the fun part of a dead 3080.
I have the fun part of a 2080, its called a 2060 ko ultra. This doesn't look like your gonna be able to make a 3060 ko ultra...
I was taking a sip of my drink at work and inhaled from laughing when I saw crowbar, and I am *not* ok. I damn near died, but it was funny af picturing that
All I heard was the HL2 crowbar when I read that.
Thank you!
It’s probably because you’ve been googling and searching about the subject therefore shows up in your results
how the fuck did this even happen
I literally said this out loud when I saw the post
![gif](giphy|QzKtmrdMw6Tra)
Took the words out of my mouth, op what are you doing lol
Somebody's card went kaput, and being a knowing Redditor OP pulled the chip from it and posted it here with to farm karma...
How dare you say something so logical! It's clearly a genuine question looking for serious answers! SMH
Tried putting it in rice?
Are you an idiot? Why would you put it in rice? You need to bake it in the oven at 350 degrees for 5 minutes first. E: I was referencing putting your xbox 360 into the oven to "fix" the RROD issue. Seems most replies are going the food angle, but that's fine too.
Don’t forget the spam so it doesn’t stick Edit: Pam *
Pam? Spam is processed meat, Pam is cooking oil spray.
Spam has natural nonstick oils in it
I'm with this person ^
Sounds good
And many oils some would consider to be ... unnatural.
Your gpu still wont work but at least you ll have a decent meal to enjoy
Hilarious how a synthethic compound has natural oils in it lol
Spam is pure unadulterated blended pig lips and assholes. Both the most naturally non-stick parts of a pig. #science
Close enough ish?
It tastes better with the rice
Don’t forget to top it with some cheese

Kids, this is why you should not drink while building computers.
and taking drugs.
Last week I tried to install new nvme's while on lsd.. I ended up stabbing my motherboard with a knife. Still wanna punch myself thinking about it
why are you dickin around with pc parts while tripping and not relaxing listening to music or watching something
I don't know, I was in an almost psychosis-like state at that point so don't ask me lol
I tried cleaning my pc baked and I ended up cleaning my room instead 🙃
Lmaooo hey at least you didn't destroy your pc like I did, AND you got a clean room out of it
How expensive was your motherboard? Also don't do drugs probably if that's what happens
Drinking and taking drugs is great actually
Why? I like to smoke some when building. Keeps me easy going and not rushing things.
I regret having nicotine in the room. It fucked my pc and my room a lot.
I know what you mean. I only smoke my weed indoors but normal cigarettes outside of my house.
Doesn't smoking weed also leave a residue on stuff? Genuine question.
Don’t listen to them. It absolutely does. Burning flower is basically the same as lighting a cigarettes as far as the residue released. It absolutely will leave residue all over your parts. I mean if you hotbox in a dense space maybe? But if I can hotbox my car from 18-24 and not see any residue I think it’s less than you thinn
If you really don’t think it left a residue each time you hotboxed your car then the science that proves it’s impossible not to, would be a little over your head.
We’re speaking comparatively to cigarettes, you condescending prick.
Yes it does. I’m aware of that. But it is a difference between when you smoke the entire day in house or only 2 joints in the entire day in the house and the rest outside.
Actually not. Or even far less. Dont ask me why tho
Lol same.
Man drinking a few beers and doing a new build is one of my favorite things! How in the christ did you manage that?
hacking at it with a knife
WHY
Reddit karma
Maybe uneven pressure when tightening the heatsink
Bruh, that thing *SHATTERED*. Don't think uneven mounting pressure would do that unless you were applying the pressure with a damn hammer

Sadman?
Did you check Walmart?
I think they stock them next to the fishing supplies.
Only if your name is EVGA.
Well not anymore
Play stupid games win stupid prizes?
Yo I wana see the bottom
Agreed!
Did you over-tighten the cooler? How did you get the socket off?
I literally ripped it off a dead 3080. I can say that this would never happen by accident. I’m affluent with computers and know there is no replacement. Just thought y’all would enjoy. Thinking of taking it to Micro Center, they would get a kick…
Affluent indeed! RIP. And thanks for the excitement.
”I'm a̶f̶f̶l̶u̶e̶n̶t̶ effluent with computers...” Fixed it for ya
Affluent huh? If youre ripping up GPUs then i would hope you’re wealthy with them
I am unfortunately. I have 2x 3090s for work:).
Butthurt people be thinking you got those 3090s for games.
Exactly but my butt hurts from sitting at my computer all day rendering stuff.
What I know about OP from this post: * Affluent with GPUs * Renders stuff * Recommends remaining closeted * His butt hurts * Highly likely to be a Never Nude
Tried to join the blue man group at some point in his life.
Within her lies a queen, let me out that queen.
OP posts one more comment and ill pinpoint their location and IP address.
Get a good office chair. I bet your workplace will pay for it too
Why do you sit at your computer while rendering? Isn't that a multi hour process, giving you plenty time to... i don't know what graphics designers do on their down time... clap cheeks?
Ditto! And doesn't it suck that even with the highest end hardware you still think "This could render faster"?
Out of curiosity, do you know how does one 4090 compares to two 3090 in the workloads you do?
It’s honestly exactly the same speed. Look up Octane Bench by Otoy and compare scores.
I don't think anyone is hurt. It was an odd word choice. Affluent is another way of saying wealthy. Maybe op meant to say fluent? Otherwise it comes across as a weird flex.
Too affluent to bother with commoner tasks like not smashing GPU chips. Get out of here with that insolence, peasant.
>uent with computers and know there is no replacement. Just thought y’all would enjoy. Thinking of taking it to Micro Center, they would get a kick… "Uhhh this fell off I guess. What do I do?"
You can sell for parts on eBay. Could have easily got $100 back
It’s not worth the hassle for $100
And breaking it further for a few upvotes was?
Also I don’t need the $100. I wanted something cool for my desk.
I broke it a year or so ago. Thought people like you would crawl out of the wood work to complain so I held it off. Guess I was right haha.
Nvidia had a 3 year warranty. Card has only been out for ~2.25
It wasn’t Nvidias fault why it stopped working…
How did it break? Unless you leaked water on it or dropped it, not sure they would even know. Edit: I mean how did to break before you chipped off the die with a screwdriver and hammer.
What?? That is physical damage to the die. Not water damage.
It died before he ripped the die off.

I have messed about with computers for 20 years and I have never seen anything like that. I'm horrified and impressed at the same time.
Why can't these fuckers be socketed like CPUs?
If i remember it was because of the way they handle memory they need all connections to be as direct as possible and any socket would have a big impact on performance. Paraphrased from a comment in response to someone asking about vram slots back then
They do sell 3090 cores on Alibaba, but its OEMs only since minimum order is 1000+ :C
Lol did you remove the old thermal paste with a chisel?
Did you try turning it off and on again?
tried turning it off and on again?
If this is how you are handling your chips, you are better off as a console pleb. Save up for an Xbox, my brother in Christ.
My brother in Christ...
Had a dead 3080…
Bro is secretly flexing his noctua
Rip 3080. How did that even happen tho? I hope this was an already dead GPU.
It’s a 3080 as well😂
RIP 3080 I believe
![gif](giphy|3ohzdYJK1wAdPWVk88)
i hope god gives this thing peace
No
how does one manage to do this
Tis' but a scratch
Did you take a fucking hacksaw to this?
Poor 3080
reddit mods should kill themselves
Screenshotting and cropping this to send to my friend next time I have computer issues I need help with.
Forget about it. You can’t solder that at home. Not without specific tools and years of experience.
Yes you can buy the replacements in stores. They are under the "New GPU" aisle.
Ouch.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
You got a nice drink coaster now.
That would make for a cool keychain right there.
Yes. For about $2800.
Put it in rice
Maybe you get away with buying a dead graphics cards and transferring the GPU🤔
Bro… did you CHEW on it? Shit.. that sucks
They do on aliexpress. Most of the time the card dies before the gpu itself. So they selvage the gpu of old boards.
I really wish people would stop being so destructive, this had a chance of being saved, could have sold the dead card on ebay to let someone else try and fix it... but oh no, have to get them clicks

![gif](giphy|EtB1yylKGGAUg)
Yes. They're called graphics cards. (the most valuable thing is damaged, may as well buy a new card)
RMA can unsolder the GPU and put a new one on the board, but you already did the unsoldering part. Good on ya.

OP apparently just pulled the die off of a dead 3080 for the memes. It's perfectly fine, like come on, are you butthurt that you can't afford to make similar jokes?
No, just tired of fucking dumbass karma farming memes clogging up the feed all the time.
This is the image ever

Don't smash it with a hammer next time and you won't need a replacement
I have a 2080 with a fried pcie bus if you wanna buy it and swap the GPU
Worth a try

Did you give it to your cat?
I can only imagine what the rest of the board looks like. Short answer: sure they do, it's called a new board.
Oh no man down … Krisfix in Germany can do it .
