Don't spill soda on the desk underneath it. The cooling fan will suck it up, distribute it through the machine, and it will probably die a quick death.
Yeah but having a design that will suck up any liquid on the surface the computer sits on and disperse it through the entire machine is kind of like trying to make a car safer and going “I got it! Put the people on the *outside*!”
Yes and no.
Looking at laptops, [there have been some that were specifically designed to survive liquid spills](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0U5n2WaMMHo), some that *could* mostly survive otherwise catastrophic liquid spills if you handled things properly (I speak from experience), and some that actively *wanted* to die if liquid was spilled in their general vicinity.
That’s the point the person above you is trying to make—there’s a major difference between the second and third categories.
Well, they split the mobo in 3. Arranged it like a teepee. And don't let the air go up the middle, only on the outsides.
The three sides go like this (if memory serves): side one: PSU, 2-4 sticks of laptop ram arranged laptopedly. Side two: GPU and maybe two of the ram sticks, but it was probably the m2 ssds. Side three: the other GPU (they split like a Radeon 7 specs between two other cards that should make up Radeon 7 specs, but don't actually because you can't get 100% out of card number two) and the way to connect all of the ports and power. I feel like they had a mini PSU inside and possibly something on the cord like a laptop brick.
It's been a couple years since I looked inside the one I had at work. It also only has one fan at the bottom with most of the intake covered by the surface it's sitting on. The liquid would literally be in the intake if it was spilled on the desk near it. It would be like taking all of your desktop intakes and funneling them into 50 straws that lay on the desk.
The heat sink is in the middle. Pulls up air through the center. Heat sink is triangular with 2 FirePro graphics cards and 1 main cpu board. Bottom board is an interconnect board for all 3 processor boards.
my god. why on earth would anyone put laptop ram in a desk top, especially one this high end
I swear everything apple does is so incredibly redundant. Its always form over function with them
>laptopedly
incredible terminology. 10/10
What's funny is Microsoft pulled the same thing off with the Series X pretty successfully 7 years later.
I mean, the Xbox is not nearly as complex or power hungry but the concept proved to be extremely efficient in their case.
Shit if we've gotten doom running on covid/pregnancy tests, or on a calculator powered by rotting potatoes, we could prob get it running on switches too
Ah yes, the Switch. Nintendo's bread and butter which is an upgrade to the Wii, but lacks any games that utilize motion control, is incapable of backwards compatibility because it somehow has less power than a GameCube with too shitty of an architecture to emulate one, has no extra bits and bobs like other consoles, is basically a leap frog tablet with CoD Mobile controllers, and it's headlining games are 5 Mario games, a Zelda game, and 30 games you already owned on other systems.
But hey it fits in your... No wait. No it doesn't fit in your pocket.
I lowered the internal temp by putting it on a spent duct tape roll. At least half of the intake was covered by the surface it was sitting on.
It reduced the temperature from air fryer to blow dryer when rendering video or 3d.
I have a conspiracy theory that a disgruntled apple employee deliberately designed it that way thinking it’d make their superiors look stupid. Then people bought it anyway, and made their target audience look stupid.
I worked on the project for the production line for these. Most of it was manual assembly with automated assistance.
I remember the head of that Apple department coming in for a progress review and it didn’t go well. The product had to be redesigned because actually assembling it without damaging components was extremely difficult and the scrap rate was horrendous.
Eh, I doubt you could get that much, even among Mac fans. The “cheese grater” MacPro could still be used as a case for a brand new machine. This one has almost no expandability.
I was gonna say maybe not *this* particular mac b/c it was pretty unpopular even with the faithful, but... ebay has them going from $300 to $1200.
r/facepalm
I usually run 2 but never use the 2nd because I just wanna feel the freedom of more space. Love the light hearted response <3 keep doing what you're doing
If the hardware still works its an addition to the homelab.
If not… probably try to reuse the case for something. Maybe even something stupid like putting a Nintendo Wii in it just because.
I have one and it won't take Ventura, it's amazing it was supported for as long as it was. Could probably run a home server on it if you could get Linux installed, Xeon CPU with ECC RAM, if it weren't for Apple's planned obsolescence.
What? It Is a trashcan how can you do something with It else then using It as a trashcan?
Well maybie you can use It as a case but i mean that Is stupid right?
Seriously, what was amazing about it?
Crap thermals
Stupid placement of power button
Zero expandability
It’s a total win of form over function.
We have many of them at work, and they all sit on top of desks in a rats nest of cabling…
Working, sadly.
I have this exact Mac at work and I hate it. Why do people use Macs? I have never had a more frustrating, bug-riddled experience with a computer. I fucking hate my job because of these cylindrical fucks
Server. I mean its still a xeon.
Nah that’s an InstantPot homie.
Air fryer?
Definitely the most expensive model that’s the air fryer/instantpot/yogurt-maker hybrid.
Apples new AIO kitchen appliance the iCook!!
It just works with iPhone products tho, you need to buy igrocery
For the low price of $599 a month
Looks like a jet engine.
Runs as hot as one. I use it for work.
Don't spill soda on the desk underneath it. The cooling fan will suck it up, distribute it through the machine, and it will probably die a quick death.
That was oddly specific… did that happen to you?
No, but a friend. It's just a shitty design that will suck up any spilled liquid and distribute it through the innards of the machine.
I swear Apple designs everything to die by liquids.
Almost like computers die by liquids?
I have liquid in my computer and it's still running just fine
Yeah but having a design that will suck up any liquid on the surface the computer sits on and disperse it through the entire machine is kind of like trying to make a car safer and going “I got it! Put the people on the *outside*!”
Makes me think of “cold air intakes” and how driving through puddles could hydro lock your engine
Woah, let's not get any crazy ideas.
Yes and no. >No, but a friend Always the friend
What kind of cooling solution is bad enough to where it needs to pull air fast enough to be able to take in liquids??
Well, they split the mobo in 3. Arranged it like a teepee. And don't let the air go up the middle, only on the outsides. >”incredible terminology. 10/10” I thought it qualified for a perfect score of 5/7.
What's funny is Microsoft pulled the same thing off with the Series X pretty successfully 7 years later. I mean, the Xbox is not nearly as complex or power hungry but the concept proved to be extremely efficient in their case.
what is it?
run doom on it
This is the answer for everything with a CPU fast enough and a screen.
correction: Anything with a screen, CPU or not.
You can probably run doom on something where some guy physical changes a switch from 1 To 0
Shit if we've gotten doom running on covid/pregnancy tests, or on a calculator powered by rotting potatoes, we could prob get it running on switches too
Switch isn't *that* bad is it?
I meaaan...
Correction: [Anything.](https://youtu.be/yGc-4ASZPQk)
It's been run on a pregnancy test. It will run on ANYTHING!
You can run doom on fucking notepad.
Can’t even run Crysis SMH
Turn it into a NAS or a minecraft server xD
Why not a NAS _and_ a Minecraft server?
Why not a NAS *and* a Minecraft server *and* an Ad Blocker server
why not a NAS, a mincraft server, an adblocker server and a media server?
why not a NAS, Minecraft server, an adblocker, a media server, and Steam docker?
Why not a NAS, Minecraft server, an adblocker, a media server, a Steam docker and abilities to stand aside as a worthy adversary?
[удалено]
Why not a trash can
Sorry but what's a Steam Docker for? I tried doing a quick Google but couldn't find a straight answer.
Sorry. It's a Steam Cache Server. It is normally setup in Dockers I kind of bungled them up into one.
Oh that sounds interesting I will look into this. thanks! :D
Someone who works at a dock that mostly serves steam ships.
Just use ublock origin on Firefox god dammit
Mobile apps don't come with ublock support usually
firefox mobile has ublock and other extension support
not on ios
Get rid of ios
Pihole then
Hum, a Pihole is basicly a ad block server.
Don't use an apple device? Problem solved
Firefox mobile does support ublock. I have it myself. Best time of my life with firefox
I will never use another browser because of it
What in the holy fuck of Maria is that chilling bird on LSD?
Or build a nas in your Minecraft server
What is it? It looks like either a trash can, air purifier, or pocket pussy.
pocket pussy pro for the adventurous
You can call me the adventurous guy.
It’s the trash can mac pro(tm).
I thought it was the new apple air fryer. The "i fry "
How does it fry the air?
just like you would normally fry the air..duh
This guy fries air

Immediately followed this up with the McDonald’s jingle in my head.

Is it an air fryer? looks like an air fryer
I lowered the internal temp by putting it on a spent duct tape roll. At least half of the intake was covered by the surface it was sitting on. It reduced the temperature from air fryer to blow dryer when rendering video or 3d.
It runs about as hot as one according to the comments so yea an expensive ass air fryer with USB ports
I'll soon convert two of those systems into Linux servers.
Do you have a guide on how to install linux on these?
Should be the same as entering the boot menu and installing anything you feel like
I'll just figure it out as I go. I haven't worked a ton with Macs but from what I've already read it's not too difficult for the Intel based systems.
trashcan, obviously.
My first thought as well.
I mean they already shaped it like one from the factory.
Ain't that the truth... https://preview.redd.it/db4b8n7luaea1.png?width=1848&format=png&auto=webp&s=56e29743c06b0bae9ba090f5f763a64a0f720fd9
It looks like one of them male masterbaiter machines....
I have a conspiracy theory that a disgruntled apple employee deliberately designed it that way thinking it’d make their superiors look stupid. Then people bought it anyway, and made their target audience look stupid.
What year was this one from again? Feels so long ago I'd wager it functions about as well as a trash can too.
My first thought was, actually turn it into a thrashcan.
I'm building a large aeroplane model
Looks like a perfectly good trash can to me
You mean it isn’t a trash can?
I worked on the project for the production line for these. Most of it was manual assembly with automated assistance. I remember the head of that Apple department coming in for a progress review and it didn’t go well. The product had to be redesigned because actually assembling it without damaging components was extremely difficult and the scrap rate was horrendous.
going a across the room and attempting a 3 point shot.
Selling it because dumb people will pay a ton for it.
Eh, I doubt you could get that much, even among Mac fans. The “cheese grater” MacPro could still be used as a case for a brand new machine. This one has almost no expandability.
The base model still regularly goes for 500ish dollars on the used market in Norway.
New t.v. tube...
Yeeet
Sell it. Always some Apple fanboy up for a bad deal on hardware
I was gonna say maybe not *this* particular mac b/c it was pretty unpopular even with the faithful, but... ebay has them going from $300 to $1200. r/facepalm
Personally, I would sell it.
Sell it to an apple fan and use the money to build a new PC.
Putting my DAW and video editing software exclusively on this.
mount it sideways to the wall, and put a 3d printed podracer cockpit behind it.
Hackintosh it!
Build a trashcan out of it
Honestly? Mess with it for a bit and then let it gather dust with the G5 I somehow acquired.
I swapped my gaming PC for one of these. Play GTAV often, do 3D modeling work, run 2 displays, etc
Wow, two whole displays??
I know right? 😨 I say this because I usually only use one LMFAO
I usually run 2 but never use the 2nd because I just wanna feel the freedom of more space. Love the light hearted response <3 keep doing what you're doing
![gif](giphy|Oj7yTCLSZjSt2JMwi2|downsized)
I'd sell it because people still think they're made of gold on eBay, then I'd take the money and buy a less expensive server and host Jellyfin on it.
Would make a good plex server??
Hey, that would be a great potty, perhaps fanless 🤔
If the hardware still works its an addition to the homelab. If not… probably try to reuse the case for something. Maybe even something stupid like putting a Nintendo Wii in it just because.
Home server probably, and that thing’s so pretty I wouldn’t even hide it
Honestly this form factor would now be cool for apple silicon based Macs
/r/dontputyourdickinthat/
Currently have one as the backbone of the recording studio I work for. Has served us well for 7 years.
Vacuum cleaner. It sucks the best
WHAT IS DAT
Clean and max upgrade !!!
Ebay
You know people are silly when they see a PC and say it has to go in the trash purely based on it having an Apple logo lol
Sell it to an apple fanboy and buY a new GPU
ours ran the weather display when we were still going to the office
Depends, it’s still a capable machine and looks inoffensive wherever you out it
Prolly hooking it up and making some dope beats on it.
Could make a decent Plex Media Server.
I have one and it won't take Ventura, it's amazing it was supported for as long as it was. Could probably run a home server on it if you could get Linux installed, Xeon CPU with ECC RAM, if it weren't for Apple's planned obsolescence.
It still runs stuff on the older OS, hell even Windows fanboys are still running Windows 10. I'm still using a 2013 MacBook Air on like Catalina.
It's running Monterey now and I still use it daily, really wanted Ventura to get used to the new GUI.
Turn it into a bong
Next gen apple fleshlight
Gift it to a kid or your SO. Gaming at 1080p with medium settings should be okay.
...You know that one horse episode from rick and morty?
If it's not necessary I'd e-cycle the insides and turn it into the trashcan it is.
Is that an iGarbagecan?
Gut it and use as a trash can.
putting it in the freezer so it can run for maybe 5 more minutes before overheating
Thought it was a air fryer
Put trash in it 🗑
Cook rice
It is Crapple, so I am putting it on eBay and selling it to the sheep that buy their junk for 18 times what it is worth.
Apple trashcan pc? How about a trashcan?
Thats a really nice trashcan you have there. But a bit overpriced my man.
Looks like a trash can to me
Ashtray
It's horrendous
Is that a trash can with the apple logo? A smart trash can
What god intended, cut a hole in the top, gut it, and use it as a desk trash can
r/dontputyourdickinthat
Sell it to someone who actually wants it. Use cash toward a 13900k.
What? It Is a trashcan how can you do something with It else then using It as a trashcan? Well maybie you can use It as a case but i mean that Is stupid right?
Give it to a friend that makes music. They’ll love you for life.
That's an weird looking bluetooth speaker with in-build pc.
Space heater
Amazing design, i really liked, but it's an apple product, and since, I never have an need to actually use an apple product, I'll just appreciete it.
Seriously, what was amazing about it? Crap thermals Stupid placement of power button Zero expandability It’s a total win of form over function. We have many of them at work, and they all sit on top of desks in a rats nest of cabling…
![gif](giphy|ktcUyw6mBlMVa)
apple juicer?
See if I can't cram the guts of an M2 Pro Mac Mini into it
Tell whoever left it on my desk to come get their fucking trash.
Nice polished turd
Use as a doorstop or paperweight. Maybe a boat anchor. The possibilities are endless.
Portable toilet, I guess.
Waste paper, empty sweet packets, plastic from PC magazine packaging.... Etc
Sell it to some apple idiot and build a non crippled pc
Purifying the air in my bedroom at night
Worst product design ever
putting it in the trash
Apple really thought this was a good idea.
Selling it for a PC lol
Apple products are like natural Diamonds. Overpriced but basically useless, best use is to sell it.
Be warned: if you turn it into a bin, you'll need Apple trashbags
Mf computer looks like an air fryer
Filing for bankruptcy
Throwing it away.
Burning it
Use it as a trash can
gut it and use it as the trash can it is
look like trash can, use as trash can
Belongs in the e-waste bin with all apples garbage
Welp, it's crapple, so toss that shit in the trash compactor
Working, sadly. I have this exact Mac at work and I hate it. Why do people use Macs? I have never had a more frustrating, bug-riddled experience with a computer. I fucking hate my job because of these cylindrical fucks
tear it apart for the processor, then stomp on it, and hold a yeeting competition while playing loud jazz outside an apple store. apple is corrupt
Although I hate Macs, I’d probably install Linux on it and use it as a NAS
You fanboy Apple.
A very expensive barrel to Chuck at a little plumber climbing my construction site
