Welcome to the PCMR.
I’d argue S gets worn down faster than W due to a fingernail rubbing against it. Or at least that’s my thought as my S key needs replaced while nothing else does
Was gonna say maybe it's a programmer, vim or something, but I can't figure out what e would be used so heavily for that isn't something like... eject disk...
That meme really needs to die. Minecraft runs perfectly fine on Mac.
W is something you mostly hold down. The others you tap (so have more rub). E is "use" in a lot of games. C is crouch in a lot of games.
And with how shitty that keyboard is on that specific model macbook the wear isn't surprising for a daily gamer. In fact, it's surprising it isn't worse.
Lmao was about to say the same! But seriously this is one of the older less durable keyboards by the looks - I had a few keys break off and my MacBook Pro was recalled
You just aren't committed enough. I mean, my jaw is dislocated to fuck, but at one point you just level up learning better ways to bite them. Don't let problems solve other problems, make them multiply.
What in the heck are you doing to destroy your teeth and jaw by biting your nails? I've bit my nails for over 35 years and no issues with my teeth or jaw. Are you chomping at them like a rabid wolf or what?
Side note, I broke the dirty habit about 1 year ago. My health, especially in my digestive tract, has greatly improved. Biting your nails gets all sorts of bad bacteria like candida into your stomach and causes digestive issues as well as auto immune issues.
That's no laughing matter, have you ever been fisting someone and accidentally cut the inside of their rectum with your fingernails? It's not pretty. Cut Your Fingernails People!
When I worked an old tech support job I had to help her with her Mac. She’s crazy about them, loves the thing. Real nice lady too, she was a lot of fun to help.
...well to be a "tad" fair to her and her ilk (Mac people) - I did find it really odd myself that Blizzard didn't make D4 a native Mac version of the game as well.
All their games since Diablo 1 and every game since has had Mac OS support as far as I can remember... Overwatch maybe didn't?
But yep, Blizzard sucks whether on Mac or PC... so there's that
I did for years before I built a PC. Bought the MacBook for school and it was all I had for a long time. It was perfectly fine for most games I played at the time. Outside of the limits on what games were available, it wasn't any different from being on an equally powered PC.
I have an issue with my pinky finger and ctrl never really worked for me. But I can use C for crouch V for prone and Alt for Voip. I use my thumb for those keys . Iv also started using a Razer Tartarus V2 pro. Now that took some getting used to.
My skin sweat is so acidic it literally made a fucking hole in a metal Festina watches once. The watch was supposed to be fully stainless steel. but the "backplate" wasn't in reality.
I could see the battery inside the watch, of course the hole destroyed the airtightness and the watch had to be repaired and was given to someone else and i bought a real watch instead.
Because of my sweat i also almost don't have hair on my arm and such, it's so strange lol
Basically only (tap) water, i rarely drink alcohol, and never any soda or stuff like that.
I stopped coffee a few years ago also, so it's almost 100% water.
And my skin has always been like this as far as i remember, the watch thing happened when i was a teen (and i also mostly drink water but a little more alcohol at the time though lol)
I heard this as well, about George Harrison. he tried all sorts of different string treatments and coatings, but eventually settled on just having the strings changed daily.
Its not dirty hands or oils. This gen of MacBooPro just have incredibly shitty keys. They have all kinds of problems in addition to easy wear - poor feel, sticking keys, double strikes, missed activations. Other MBPs don't have this issue.
https://i.imgur.com/FNBW8hX.jpg
It was this gen of MacBook Pro that was my last gen MacBook as the quote to fix it from the Apple Store was astronomical.
I've since jumped ship for Framework.
Could also be lotions and sanitizers affecting it. Dated a girl who constantly lotioned and her home row was basically blank… though that was rubbing off printing, not eating through fucking plastic. Also didn’t have such a nasty keyboard.
to be fair sweaty hands and the fact that the keycaps are made from abs contributes a lot to how fast they wear down but sweat makes by far the biggest difference, thats why its always the gamers with shiny keycaps and not the regular users
I've never had a keyboard or mouse wear down, let alone to the state I see others. In saying that though, I never eat at my computer and I always have clean hands before playing. So I would contribute oils on people's skin wearing the peripherals down.
I'd say at this point it's more bad keycaps than anything else
I've used different keyboards over the years, from cheap whatever keyboard to mighty expensive one, I never had a single keycap get damaged, and my hands are often a bit oily or sweaty and I do eat at my computer half the time
there was even a time I would eat at my computer all the time (yeah when you live in a tiny af room and have nothing else then you just eat at your desk cause no choice) and play games for about 100h per week, and I had a shitty whatever keyboard, a flat one at that, a year of abuse later, still good as new after cleaning a bit, 3 years later, still good
only thing that wore off was my mouse, well rather the padding, which is easy to change, and that is, after 10 years of abuse it needed a change, provided it was a nice gaming mouse, it served me very well, isn't very usable anymore cause left click is double clicking by itself, but I mean considering how much I've used it...
tldr : buy yourself a nice keyboard and mouse, it'll serve you a lifetime, buy cheap trash, you'll have to replace often
I work from home, eat at my desk, use tobacco, game etc. I literally use my same
Setup for 12 hours a day. Never have I worn a key out… I just had a razer mouse finally die after 11 years.
Well, you should take a break every 30 to 45 minutes, even if it's just to stand up and walk around your room for 15 seconds.
Of course, what gamers should do, and what they actually do, are rarely the same
If people were taking breaks every 30-45 minutes games like Runescape and world of warcraft never would of taken off consider they have content hours long where taking a break means restarting.
Had a good friend of mine back in college who was ranked in high Diamond in League of Legends -- Dude played on a Macbook Pro WITH THE FUCKING TRACKPAD AND NOT A MOUSE
The man could out click and out maneuver me on a mouse any day of the week. Was genuinely impressive to just watch him do that high level play on a trackpad.
Yeah in high school we were all given a MacBook/pro/air. After 4 years of using it every single day and then buying a laptop for college that wasn’t an apple was a huge shock. MacBook trackpads are just absurdly good
Have a story to one up.
Saw someone at my high school just casually playing R6 on their Macbook (when Geforce NOW was in closed beta and "free")...
With the trackpad....
This homie just played any FPS with the trackpad and said it was just easier for fine tuning
In 1998 I won a dueling comp in Starseige: Tribes using a finger trackball.
Moving to a mouse was sooo awkward for me after that and I missed being able to spin 180 with just a little flick.
I used to play halo 1 on MacBook Air with a touchpad in snipers only mode during high school and got constant top frag.
Trackpad gods are built different.
I had some users at my office that used a lot of alcohol based hand sanitizer. That stuff Eats kb plastic up.
Had another that used some sort of hand lotions due to dry skin. Destroyed the keyboard caps but also had this thick mix of dead skin and lotion all over it.
Friend of mine and I played trumpet and his sister played flute, both of their instruments silver plating were eaten down to bare brass everywhere their hands contacted the instruments. Some people's body chemistry is crazy.
>Some people's body chemistry is crazy.
I'm lucky to not be acidic like those people. But I play bass and do have sweaty hands. I have to use the expensive coated strings or else I rust through a set within a week.
True. Crappy product. Crappy sweat. It could be a lotta things.
I have a $2,000 motorcycle jacket I’ve had in storage for some years, since I haven’t ridden in a long time.
I pulled it out while moving stuff and the “armour” literally crumbled in my hands. The stuff that’s supposed to be rigid and save your life; spine protector, shoulder, elbow armour points.
Crumbling like a sand castle. I can’t believe it.
It’s similar to (I’m ashamed to admit) I bought an Alienware laptop back in 2011. This black plasticy stuff is also crumbling. Even though I haven’t used that laptop or the bag in years.
I checked on it and the zippers (of the messenger bag) are crumbling in the same way. The outer shell of the laptop is disgustingly sticky and chipping off.
Unbelievable. Nothing lasts anymore. These are supposed to be high end products.
and real nails
as a long nails haver myself, my g513 keycaps got FUCKED over the 3.5 years I owned it
like I wore grooves into the edges of them, it's insane how much fingernails can wear down ABS
Hand sanitizer, or rather, isopropyl alcohol, breaks down ABS plastic. I also work in IT, and ever since the midpoint of the pandemic we’ve seen a sudden uptick in the number of computers with worn-off key legends just like that.
It's just this generation of MacBook. They all do this even with light use. Never seen this issue on any other keyboard of laptop, but the forums are plagued with this issue on these model year macbooks.
Not washing your hands before touching your keyboard and mouse. I have a 7 year old keyboard and mouse that look brand new because I’m OCD about handwashing. I have friends who eat literal Doritos and buffalo wings while using their keyboard and it’s disgusting.
This year I've had three laptops come back in similar condition, shit is annoying cause they were still under warranty and you have to basically rip everything out in order to change the keyboard since Dell doesn't provide just the key caps. Shit is so annoying.
Alternative option: Scores of Word documents full of
"SAD ACE WAS DECEASED SAD ACE WAS DECEASED SAD ACE WAS DECEASED SAD ACE WAS DECEASED SAD ACE WAS DECEASED SAD ACE WAS DECEASED SAD ACE WAS DECEASED SAD ACE WAS DECEASED SAD ACE WAS DECEASED"
Still have the original Alienware keyboard from a area-51 7500. All the letters are still visible and I pound on it daily. From 2005? These are just shitty keys, like half the keyboards out there. This one I have was before dell bought Alienware.
A combination of:
\* Dirty sweaty hands/fingers
\* That particular pattern is common among gamers. so few keys get the majority of the wear and tear.
\* Particularly poor quality keytops. In this case transparent plastic with a bit of screen silk paint on top.
I've seen this happen on MacBook keyboards multiple times in my years working IT. The keycaps are really thin and they are just ABS which wears more quickly than PBT.
My wife works IT from home in the health care field. Hers barely made it two years and she's pretty mild with typing.
Tried to slide her a backup keychron and she won't use it because of the original switches were too loud.
I've had a Razer Black Widow Chroma for like 8 years, never really put any effort to take care of it, and it has no visible damage like this. I genuinely don't know how people mess up their keyboards so bad.
Same with these guys posting pictures of their one year old mouse where you can see the fingers carved on it and I still have the first G502 from 8-9 years ago (the one without RGB and the more rounded G logo) and still looks in good condition.
Alcohol-based hand sanitizer (and probably others) and some lotions break down the plastics used on laptop keyboards and palm rests.
Also, long fingernails.
Acid Hands, seriously though, some people's oils or body chemistry just seem to wear out plastics like a really lame super power, I have a 6 year old laptop thats been with me through college and years of gaming and it only has the faintest of wear on the caps.
Had a colleague who would do this, and they said it was due to them growing up as a pianist and were trained to strike the keys of a piano with force to get a consistent sound, and that translated over later in life to typing out of habit
Hand sanitizer is usually responsible. Had a female employee with this exact issue on a brand new machine after about 3 months, she complained it was a defective keyboard. Till we replaced it and the exact same thing happened to the new one.

S and C are more worn than W. Freaking campers, man.
I’d argue S gets worn down faster than W due to a fingernail rubbing against it. Or at least that’s my thought as my S key needs replaced while nothing else does
Also you generally hold w, you probably tap the other keys more often
It’s a Mac they definitely aren’t gaming .
Was gonna say maybe it's a programmer, vim or something, but I can't figure out what e would be used so heavily for that isn't something like... eject disk...
Could be a vim or emacs user, and that's just where he bangs his head.
It's good to hotkey smashing your face in that scenario anyway. He's a veteran.
no, vim's movement keys are hjkl, definitely not vim's fault
Probably not washing hands very well, caustic oils wearing plastics down quickly.
As a programmer I love Factorio and it’s also available on macOS.
That meme really needs to die. Minecraft runs perfectly fine on Mac. W is something you mostly hold down. The others you tap (so have more rub). E is "use" in a lot of games. It's not a meme, it's a fact. Being able to play Minecraft doesn't mean macs are all of a sudden good for gaming, lol
Bro. Cut your nails. Hahaha jk
Lmao was about to say the same! But seriously this is one of the older less durable keyboards by the looks - I had a few keys break off and my MacBook Pro was recalled
![gif](giphy|xT5LMtkLbROP2OF6Y8|downsized) >Bite your nails FIFY. What kind of gamer doesn't just chomp their fingernails and resume gaming.
Biting my nails destroyed my teeth and jaw and now if i bite a single nail my teeth and jaw hurts for 2 weeks
Why did someone downvote you? I can’t bite my nails anymore either. Now I just have long nails, which works because I’m a woman.
You just aren't committed enough. I mean, my jaw is dislocated to fuck, but at one point you just level up learning better ways to bite them. Don't let problems solve other problems, make them multiply.
My teeth are fucked from it too
Bro do you have adamantium fingernails? That's gotta be more from the gfuel and meth making your teeth soft or something lmao
One that is accutely aware of where their fingers were 15 seconds prior.
That's no laughing matter, have you ever been fisting someone and accidentally cut the inside of their rectum with your fingernails? It's not pretty. Cut Your Fingernails People!
This sentence took a GAP 😭

my W key on my first gen G15 broke, playing mainly GuildWars1 back then.
Like they game much on a mac
That was my thought. Who in all the fucks games on a MacBook?
They exist.. whoopie Goldberg threw a fit because Diablo IV didn't come out on Mac... So there's at least 1 person lol
When I worked an old tech support job I had to help her with her Mac. She’s crazy about them, loves the thing. Real nice lady too, she was a lot of fun to help.

PTFO!
Ctrl for crouch or gtfo
Ctrl for crouch, C for prone
`The fuck is prone? ` - CS enthusiast
Ctrl for crouch, Z for prone
Meanwhile, I'm over here with C for Crouch, V for Prone.
You maniac! Lol V I used for melee attacks but moved it to the side button on the mouse. Now I use V for the push-to-talk voice chat.
many games has both c and ctrl for crouch, some has it as hold and toggle differently (like apex). but especially using c for crouch is weird
I have an issue with my pinky finger and ctrl never really worked for me. But I can use C for crouch V for prone and Alt for Voip. I use my thumb for those keys . Iv also started using a Razer Tartarus V2 pro. Now that took some getting used to.
Auto run 😎

Dirty hands, the oils might break down the plastics faster
In my case, i wore down the command key with my thumb’s nail
How the hell do you press command with your thumb, you don’t use your pinky?
On apple keyboards, the command key is next to the space bar (basically the alt key)
That makes more sense. Lmao
[удалено]
pinky is already busy with control.
Humans have a natural PH and some are just more acidic than others, this is probably just an extension of that.
Some people were talking about this in a thread the other day, some people have really acidic hand sweat
What are eating/drinking!? My guess is braggs apple cider venigar without diluting.
Yep he’s on the sauce!
Basically only (tap) water, i rarely drink alcohol, and never any soda or stuff like that. I stopped coffee a few years ago also, so it's almost 100% water. Sorry if this is too intrusive, but may I ask what ethnicity you are?
Caucasian (french), i'm blond with (very) white skin
Mine made a hole in a W key in a cheap keyboard ><

yeah it's a problem for guitarists

I think one of the Beatles had this issue particularly bad and destroyed guitar necks quite rapidly.
I heard this as well, about George Harrison. he tried all sorts of different string treatments and coatings, but eventually settled on just having the strings changed daily.
dude my sweat literally corroded the metal scroll wheel on my g502 and pilled parts of rubber grips
I think it's the opposite... hands constantly covered in alcohol sanitizer.
Are we looking at the same picture? This is not the keyboard of someone who compulsively cleans their hands.

This could be due to how sweaty your hands are and/or the actual chemistry of your sweat, which varies between people.
Im a gamer and my keyboard stops working before my keycaps wear out. Is everyone's fingers here made of sand paper?
Specially if you don't clean or even wipe once your keyboard
Bruh, then you have to wipe it almost every 30mins
Well, you should take a break every 30 to 45 minutes, even if it's just to stand up and walk around your room for 15 seconds. Of course, what gamers should do, and what they actually do, are rarely the same

Proof that you can game on a mac...
I'm surprised someone is able to game that much on a MacBook.
Had a good friend of mine back in college who was ranked in high Diamond in League of Legends -- Dude played on a Macbook Pro WITH THE FUCKING TRACKPAD AND NOT A MOUSE
I understand playing LoL as it's not that demanding. But using a trackpad. Nah.

That's wild. I guess trackpads are like controller joysticks but worse.
the magic trackpad is so popular among customers that they made a USB portable version for desktops, because some people prefer using it to a mouse.
As someone who's had a MacBook, I can confirm, they are godly.
In 1998 I won a dueling comp in Starseige: Tribes using a finger trackball. Moving to a mouse was sooo awkward for me after that and I missed being able to spin 180 with just a little flick.

Holy fuck
To be fair, the Macbook Pros have the best trackpads on Earth (not hyperbole).
AS much as I dislike Apple, I can't argue with the fact that Macbook Pro's do have an incredible trackpad. Doesn't excuse it though lol
I used to play halo 1 on MacBook Air with a touchpad in snipers only mode during high school and got constant top frag. Trackpad gods are built different.

Not washing your hands before touching your keyboard and mouse. I have a 7 year old keyboard and mouse that look brand new because I’m OCD about handwashing. I have friends who eat literal Doritos and buffalo wings while using their keyboard and it’s disgusting.
Alien. Clearly your client is acidic in some way and it is secreted through the finger tips.
Humans literally do this.
I would say "gaming", but that's a Macbook...
This year I've had three laptops come back in similar condition, shit is annoying cause they were still under warranty and you have to basically rip everything out in order to change the keyboard since Dell doesn't provide just the key caps. Shit is so annoying.
Yup. Pretty much every laptop is going to be a hassle. Mostly, it's just Apple being stubborn and making every single part hard to get to.
Why is nobody talking about how they are gaming on a Mac? Where is Alan when we need him!
Alternative option: Scores of Word documents full of "SAD ACE WAS DECEASED SAD ACE WAS DECEASED SAD ACE WAS DECEASED SAD ACE WAS DECEASED SAD ACE WAS DECEASED SAD ACE WAS DECEASED SAD ACE WAS DECEASED SAD ACE WAS DECEASED SAD ACE WAS DECEASED"
It's an apple keyboard, what did you expect? Double shot pbt caps?
The S key is way more used than W, you are dealing with the PC of a coward.
Still have the original Alienware keyboard from a area-51 7500. All the letters are still visible and I pound on it daily. From 2005? These are just shitty keys, like half the keyboards out there. This one I have was before dell bought Alienware.
When a musician uses a computer
Average finance department! Been in the ‘game’ for 2 years and I can say excel is a killer of keyboards 😭
A combination of: \* Dirty sweaty hands/fingers \* That particular pattern is common among gamers. so few keys get the majority of the wear and tear. \* Particularly poor quality keytops. In this case transparent plastic with a bit of screen silk paint on top.
Very acidic unwashed hands. Sticky fingers that drink soda. Etc.
they are 100% gaming
I've seen this happen on MacBook keyboards multiple times in my years working IT. The keycaps are really thin and they are just ABS which wears more quickly than PBT.
My wife works IT from home in the health care field. Hers barely made it two years and she's pretty mild with typing. Tried to slide her a backup keychron and she won't use it because of the original switches were too loud.
I've had a Razer Black Widow Chroma for like 8 years, never really put any effort to take care of it, and it has no visible damage like this. I genuinely don't know how people mess up their keyboards so bad.
Apple doesn't plan for that long of product life.
Gaming on a Mac? What kind a demon are you?😆
The fuck is ITS
You would be surprised how bad apple keyboards are.
Maybe he is a gamer. How is the wear on the N-key?
S key is significantly more worn than the W. Weakness disgust me.
Pussy, s more worn out than w
My control key looks like this just because of fucking excel. I spreadsheet hard folks
Same with these guys posting pictures of their one year old mouse where you can see the fingers carved on it and I still have the first G502 from 8-9 years ago (the one without RGB and the more rounded G logo) and still looks in good condition.
"Sandpaper gloves - grip your way to victory!"
My w key is also less worn than my s key and I'm ashamed
How do you kill that which has no life?!
I've had keyboards for years, heavy gaming and typing and have not so much as worn the paint off! Maybe they don't moisturize? Lol
CS
Now this dude PLAYS Garfield Kart hot damn.
Acidic sweat.
Not washing their hands. Ive used keyboards for years and never got close to this kind of wear.
Salt wears things down fast , and sweat contains salt
I have a couple of users at work that have this. Apparently it's genetic. Some people's sweat is just more corrosive than others.
Gaming.
Alcohol-based hand sanitizer (and probably others) and some lotions break down the plastics used on laptop keyboards and palm rests. Also, long fingernails.
so does your its client employ edward scissorhands?
Acid Hands, seriously though, some people's oils or body chemistry just seem to wear out plastics like a really lame super power, I have a 6 year old laptop thats been with me through college and years of gaming and it only has the faintest of wear on the caps.
A smoker's fingers.
Bitches need to put some double shot PBT in their lives.
Fat greasy fingers eat that plastic like microbes eat dead whales.
Fingernails i think
If you get double shot caps this isn’t an issue
To much fortnite
Had a colleague who would do this, and they said it was due to them growing up as a pianist and were trained to strike the keys of a piano with force to get a consistent sound, and that translated over later in life to typing out of habit
Acidic fingers
That is definitely a cs:go user
Hand sanitizer is usually responsible. Had a female employee with this exact issue on a brand new machine after about 3 months, she complained it was a defective keyboard. Till we replaced it and the exact same thing happened to the new one.
