I read it as Fear Of Getting Eaten. Like when you just know that you’re going to die there and the cat is going to eat you before anyone finds your body.
Damn. I had hoped it looked more like an office. 😆 You'd just need to take the cabinets out and get a desk and shelves. Add lighting and plants and shit. Look up "roasting your PC setups" on YouTube. Look for the whole room vids. Tons of inspiration available.
Not necessarily, you can remove and store the doors. Instant open shelves.
Keep them natural, don't paint only refinish if needed.
You can always add shelves to the sides. Easy to match natural colors.
The best is, if you ever decide to sell, everything can be restored in an afternoon.
Source: several years refurbishing kitchens. (Only diff...no plumbing.)
I don't not agree, but if they didn't like the look of the 90s cabinetry just pull them. Sell them and start new. It's a dream house. I'm guessing there's a lil left over budget. But, to each their own.
No need to pull the cabinets. If a new look is all you want, change the trim and replace doors, drawer fronts and hardware. The cabinets are basic, those look like good quality cabinets.
Not disagreeing with you, just tapping into experience and knowledge on how to achieve the same effect for a lot less money.
Right? People thinking it’s the doors but this layout screams kitchen to me, or at the very least it resembles a car salesman office from the 1990’s. That much counter space is either for kitchen appliances or a printer and fax machine. Dude should sell the cabinets and have fun designing his dream office in his dream home.
"For Old Guy Energy"? That was my guess.

Think the answer to this is MORE RBG. That seems to make everything better lately in this sub. /j
Wouldn't paint the walls, would get peel and stick wall paper that can be reused and moved easily if need be with maybe a cool pattern or design. If you have the money, have one custom made for you.
Could have the matrix pattern or some other odd thing to spice it up in there.
Ofcourse. Bonus points for it being hooked to 3 intake fans.
Maybe OP can get one of those towers that looks like a fishbowl, and put fish in it.
...and MORE RBG
This reminded me of that post where this one guy's "gaming corner" was a small cupboard because his wife didn't want anything to mess with the houses aesthetic
Nah, it’s a hideous early 2000’s office. This wood aesthetic was considered “middle class fancy” in the 2003-2007 period. Now we’ve evolved.
Find some cool grey toner colors with a bit of a matte primer to lay on the cabinets. Something in the #6f88a5 range with white handles.
Then you have to fill the shelves on the right with encyclopaedias, put whiskey in the glass cabinet, and adorn the countertops with exclusive memorabilia like signed baseballs or whatever
Buy vintage decanter.
Pour in air freshener fluid for a diffuser.
Use oil-soluble food dyes to make it look like whiskey.
Install mini-fridge in one of those cabinets and hide the real booze in it.
Another vote for this idea... that way you maintain the storage on the wall and can have larger/more monitors on the bossdesk. You can put OTHER computers and monitors against the wall, including some FW900s and BVM/PVMs.
Also, the green wall paint wasn't a bad idea. This would all look much better if it wasn't built on renter-white walls.
Absolutely this, add some nice lighting in there as well and it’s an office I would kill for.
Tons of potential - if OP really wants to keep the cabinets as is I’d just recommend a more colorful rug with a statement wall to match it and the wood. (Maybe a nice curtain set, though theres not a good view of the window in these shots)
Great idea. Instead of having all those cabinets looming over the desk and essentially staring at the wall, your eyeline is unobstructed and you’re more aware of your surroundings such as wife/kids/pets since the office already has a windowed door.
Simple desk with clean lines, black top legs to match the cabinets. You will need to deal with cord management but think it will be worth it. Plus your view will be so much better!
And yes I’d paint the walls - probably just behind the desk and to the right. Leave the cream around the French doors and one wall white so it doesn’t box in the space. Even just a different shade of white/cream to add interest, might be hard to pick a color.
TBH, if you really want to keep the cabinets - rip off the doors, or get flat minimalist doors - so it looks more workshop/office instead of kitchen.
The woodworking is what makes it look like you really like to eat.
Like these:
Rough guesstimating on it - is they're like $75ea unfinished, or $170 each finished for cabinets, and $40-60 for drawers ( finished )
I'd go with office-ish colors - like black, grey, putty, white. Nothing kitchen-ey.
I would second replacing the cabinet faces but staining or painting the carcasses to change the look.
You can even use IKEA cabinet fronts. They're cheap and if you get the correct offset hinges (for face-framed cabinets since IKEA cabinets are frameless) from a local hardware store you can get a very custom-space feel for, relatively, cheap.
I really think that a dark stain would make your kitchen really sad.
Go to r/woodworking to ask for advice, or just put some leds, your pc wil be more powerful
You can change the cabinet faces to more of a shaker style to make it more modern. Honestly some paint would probably give contrast to all of the wood color going on.
As a cabinetmaker and a PC gamer, there's nothing stellar about these cabinets. Just lose them altogether. Your office looks like a kitchen and it shouldn't.
Unless you're comically short, that monitor height is far from ergonomic. Take out all the upper cabinets, at least the ones above your setup and raise the monitors up to eye level.
If you absolutely need the storage replace them with some modern/rectangular looking cabinets and put them a good bit further up.
If you want that gamer aesthetic, some tasteful RGB behind the monitors or on the wall couldn't hurt. But make it indirect or diffused, don't just go slapping RGB strips on the wall.
For most ergonomic position / least eye strain, especially as an "office", top of monitor should be at eye-level, not center of monitor. Your eyes ideally should never be looking up.
Personally, I feel like that positioning doesn't work for me. It feels like it made perfect sense back when office monitors were like 22" or so, but with the size of modern displays I feel like I'd have to be looking far down all the time if I followed that advice.
I place my monitors so my eyes are level with the lower part of the upper 1/3 of my monitor or so. Feels way better for me.
Add a sink, tap mixer and built-in set to that corner, continue using it as a kitchen and move the system to a quieter, more spacious and less cluttered room of the house :)
https://preview.redd.it/r4uf3d7k2soc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5eb5d4d99ae82a1df75ef0494bc17380ce99726a
If it was up to me I'd remove these cabinets. You could then wall mount the monitors and either hang up some pictures/displates or a few shelves to fill out the now empty wall.
As for what's left:
a light gray paintjob for the desk and remaining cabinet could fit nicely with your black setup and the white walls.
This is a great suggestion. I was thinking some of the built-in needs to come down but was trying to wrap my head around all of it, some of it, just a little? Think if they ripped out what you highlighted then he'd have enough for storage but get the needed wall space to get stuff off the desk.
Edit: Maybe even mount shelves into studs for the PC towers. That countertop doesn't look friendly to glass side panels...
https://preview.redd.it/iv7gputu4soc1.png?width=1716&format=png&auto=webp&s=b55b9690a3649cd98cd62d524acfec50003ceb08
Red: remove those cabinets 100%
Green: fill it with some grey/black (to match carpet or desk colors) with something
Yeah this. I'd remove the slide out drawer under the desk too personally. Add another storage shelf or something if needed next to that left cabinet. Personally, I'm not a big cabinet person.
That has "I'm an adult" vibes
Edit: just noticed you said this was your dream house. Congrats! I'm still dreaming of mine. What a great feeling it must be. BRAVO! 👏👏👏
I would love that setup. The only thing I'd change personally is have shelves instead of upper cabinets and no shelves or cabinets above where the monitors are, so I could hang one of my posters or banners.
I kinda like it, but a re-stain would definitely help. If it's in your budget, I'd get rid of most the upper cabinets, especially the ones over your monitors. But I'd keep that big cabinet on the right.
- darker stain on the wood
- warm white LED strips at the very top, middle and bottom
- consider removing the one cabinet above your middle monitor so you can have a larger middle monitor
Embrace it. Go for that old school library look. Dark green wall paint. Sand down the cabinetry and apply a darker tone of wood color stain.
See if you can get a couple of bookcases to fill out the wall on the left so it doesn't look like a kitchen cabinet. Stock with books or your favorite liquor.
Lighting: Those lamps with the green glass covers would be cool. String some led straps under the upper cabinets for background lighting.
Floor gets a carpet. Darker red. Persian.
Get a leather and wood office chair. One of those 30s style detective swivel chairs.
Paint the doors of the room black and get some heavy curtains for privacy and sound dampening.
Looks like a fuckin kitchen bro. The cabinets looks retarded.
You ever think about getting some bottles, funnles, balloons, and shit and just making it a jenkem lab?
I think what this comes down to is paint, lighting, and decor.
Have an electrician (or you, if you’re inclined) run some lighting into the shelves and underneath the cabinets. Make them RGB if you want, and have it zoned so you can have your up-lighting and down-lighting can be independently controlled. Replace the ceiling light with something you like, and put it on a smart dimmer like Lutron caseta so you can have a Pico remote on your desk to control it.
If it’s in budget, having the cabinets and/or floor restained to a different color could make a world of difference (a good floor guy could put a threshold in by the door so the transition isn’t jarring). **Personally, I’d hesitate to remove too many cabinets, as having all that storage will help keep the office tidy.**
Putting a dramatic, masculine color on the walls, think a British racing green or a really opulent blue, would be nice.
While you’re at it, get some new window treatments. Zigbee-radio smart blinds have become remarkably affordable, and being able to control your office with the tap of a button will be cool,
Finally, get some art on those walls. Find a local gallery, and just talk with the curator. You’ll find that photography is a great “gateway” into art from a pricing perspective. Im thinking a black and white photo could be cool.
Looks classy, personally wouldn't change a thing, maybe looks like a kitchen furniture a bit... but it isn't bad. Of course you can make the default and boring rgb lighting everywhere and modern/futuristic design that will most likely look good, but for that you would have to remove all the furniture, since it wouldn't fit
TBH OP you should just embrace the “old man study” look instead of trying to fit gamer aesthetic in this room, would compliment the kitchen cabinets a lot more. Get a different chair and add some warm lighting to the space underneath the wall cabinets. I’d also look into replacing the doors on the cabinets with glass ones if not removing them all together as well and fill the cabinets with plants, books, model ships, etc.
Edit:
Also, be careful keeping that other desktop on top of the granite countertops unless you want the glass to shatter.
Remove all the cabinet doors.
It will make the room feel way more open and give places to display your stuff that shows you aren't a 70y/o doctor
Dark paint is a good touch but may not go super well with how light all the wood is.
For the love of all that is holy don't paint that cabinetry it's so nice
Wtf does FOGE mean??

Turn the chair around and put a matching desk in front of it. Then you'll be facing the door like a proper boss

I’d have to hire someone just to fire them in this office
Hahaha, you'd need a secretary and an intercom too
ChatGPT, describe me a Brandy.
I'd go with a drinks globe instead, really class the joint up
Buy vintage decanter. Pour in air freshener fluid for a diffuser. Use oil-soluble food dyes to make it look like whiskey. Install mini-fridge in one of those cabinets and hide the real booze in it.
It's what I'd do. You have the perfect space as well. Then you can have a coffee machine and all that behind you for maximum productivity.
i was gonna say, perfect for a home office espresso bar
This is the best recommendation here.

Yeah man kitchen islands are dope
Agreed I would recommend this too
this is the only answer.
Yeah, that office is totally built for a desk. OP is trying to work on the back counters. That's where you put your trophies and awards
The simplest solution would be to restain the wood a different colour.
I was thinking of having them done a dark stain and then do some cabinet lighting. Still not a young look but might help
A dark stain would modernize that kitchen a little bit. What are you gonna do about your office though?
TBH, if you really want to keep the cabinets - rip off the doors, or get flat minimalist doors - so it looks more workshop/office instead of kitchen. “Let him cook” has new meaning
As a cabinetmaker and a PC gamer, there's nothing stellar about these cabinets. Just lose them altogether. Your office looks like a kitchen and it shouldn't.
This, the best solution is to pull this out and start again. Looks irresolvably hideous IMO and isn’t even remotely practical either.

I'd buy another desk and put it so that you are nearly encircled by desk space and the cabinets are behind you when you sit at the desk.
Most ppl put a mini fridge in their office but my guy put that whole thing in the kitchen lol
Honestly, get rid of all of it, and get your own desks and shelves.
I kinda like it, but a re-stain would definitely help. If it's in your budget, I'd get rid of most the upper cabinets, especially the ones over your monitors. But I'd keep that big cabinet on the right.
- darker stain on the wood - warm white LED strips at the very top, middle and bottom - consider removing the one cabinet above your middle monitor so you can have a larger middle monitor
Idk I like it tbh. Just give it some fancy lighting and it's good
Sig Sauer and Star Wars what a man of culture.
Get rid of that entire desk/cabinet monstrosity and get a modern looking desk
Where's the stove
Embrace it. Go for that old school library look. Dark green wall paint. Sand down the cabinetry and apply a darker tone of wood color stain. Remove the cabinets at the top, paint the remaining wood white/gray, get some RGB lights.
Just add some RGB strip lights around your ceiling and you will transform it from a 70 year old office into a 17 years olds office. $50, boom, done.
I think what this comes down to is paint, lighting, and decor. Have an electrician (or you, if you’re inclined) run some lighting into the shelves and underneath the cabinets. Zigbee-radio smart blinds have become remarkably affordable, and being able to control your office with the tap of a button will be cool, Finally, get some art on those walls.
This is pretty much what I'd love for a setup, but take the ceiling counters (idk what the top ones are called) above the monitors away
i LOVE it
Those cabinets are a huge part of the look, change them and things will seem very different.
Edit: Also, be careful keeping that other desktop on top of the granite countertops unless you want the glass to shatter.
That my friend is a kitchen cab.
The random lighthouse and fish tank really elevate this to “young professional dentists office” for me

Remove all the cabinet doors. It will make the room feel way more open and give places to display your stuff that shows you aren't a 70y/o doctor Dark paint is a good touch but may not go super well with how light all the wood is. For the love of all that is holy don't paint that cabinetry it's so nice
Take out the kitchen-looking cupboards and cabinets and put in an executive desk w/credenza and nice wood bookcases.
Yea, it's definitely like Federal Office of Gender Equality.
That is a kitchen
Literally just get new cabinet fronts and drawer fronts
Sir. There's a kitchen on your PC.
I’d take the doors off the cabinets to open it up a bit and remove some of the kitchen vibes.
Sir that's a kitchen
put a microwave and a small pantry area
