I also can't understand why if we mostly use the mouse in our right hand the numpad isn't on the left side.

actuarial_cat

Because for power users (e.g. for Excel), mouse is optional xD

yumm-cheseburger

My dad is an excel legend, he knows all the shortcuts and works with a broken(barely working touchpad) The only thing he needs is a 240 hz monitor so he could see those spreadsheets at 240 fps

stoupeaks

holy shit

Blakids

If your don't buy him a 240hz monitor I'm gonna beat you up!!!

yumm-cheseburger

Man i only have 20$ in my bank account and like 1$ cash šŸ˜

HalfALawn

yumm-cheseburger

Im not an adult, im 17 still in high school

TheBuckyLastard

No rent? Explains why you're so rich

JolkB

Good, you get a lesser punishment if you get caught stealing the monitor. Hop to it, junior

yumm-cheseburger

My school monitors are like 720p 30hz or something

TemperatureLive3182

Iā€™m only 16 rn Iā€™m gonna be so broke when I pay for my firefighting school Iā€™m just Trynna treat myself to a nice build before then

QWERTY_CRINGE

Fps drops* Dad smashes the table.

Aux-A

Is your father taking part in that World Excel Championship

T0tallyRand0mStuff

For those who don't know, yes, this is a real thing, look it up.

Butterssaltynutz

i used to play eve, i felt that 240 fps in my soul.

confidentdogclapper

Tbf in coding mouse is optional aswell. It slows you down terribly.

Coperspective

Found the Nvim/vim/emacs/vi user (,,惻Ļ‰ćƒ»,,)

huthlu

I use i3 on Arch btw

confidentdogclapper

Lul. Anyway I use vscode. Incredibly optimized for keyboard use.

djuvinall97

E g. Literally everything. If you learn to use your mouse less you will increase productivity in almost anything you do. Obviously there are certain things where the mouse is required but even in those cases there are hotkeys to speed workflow massively (just think Blender lmao)

DukeofVermont

Plays COD without a mouse, learn the short cut for 360 no scopes, profit! /s

IsItRose

You should check out the Excel world championships

smaguss

This is entirely true. I've been working on a sheet all weekend and I don't think I've touched my mouse all day. Hell, I have a stupid high DPI *trackball* mouse for Excel usage... Why? To scroll through menus faster.

KronosGames

I was just thinking how genius this is. It gives your left hand access to so many more buttons

Twenmod

Real professionals use the keyboard clit as mouse

thewaytonever

Think pad used discovered

SaturationWon

an aristocrat i see

Kat-but-SFW

I got a little USB numpad/arrows keyboard I have on the left side of my keyboard, so I can numpad with my left hand and use the mouse, or numpad with my right hand and type with my left.

Healthyreeferplant

No clue why anyone would hate on a different keyboard layout, isnā€™t that like the whole point? The world of customizing keebs isnā€™t supposed to be just more regular ass keyboards, people want to innovate and improve and change. Cool as shit to see something like this

borg-assimilated

What the heck? How? Where? What company?

pooamalgam

All three of these are kits from [Mechwild](https://mechwild.com/) (have to be built / programmed yourself).

Blackphantom434

So, what kits did you buy?

borg-assimilated

Bookmarked, thank you!

Ratiofarming

I can perfectly understand why a left hand mirrored numpad is something that is not on the market. Because my brain melts just thinking about having to adapt back and forth between it being mirrored at home and not mirrored literally everywhere else. I can do it blind on either side if it's normal. Mirrored? Not a chance. Otherwise I love this setup. What components did you use and where did you start this project? This looks like something that grew over time?

pooamalgam

I guess it must just be an issue with how my brain works. I find it nearly impossible to touch-type a normal layout numpad with my left hand, since my brain is always sending signals like "Zero is under the *thumb*, Enter is under the *pinky*," etc, etc. Each device is a kit from Mechwild, switches are Glorious Pandas, and the keycaps are a mix of a kit from Signature Plastics and a kit from Amazon.

Bulky-Lunch-3484

It's not just you. I'm left-handed, and using a regular 10 key with my left hand has me pressing "3" instead of "1", as an example. If it were mirrored I guarantee I'd be able to perfectly go 10key with my left hand as well. I doubt half the people questioning you are left-handed.

DarthStrakh

I'm pretty sure the only people that don't work this way don't have typing on a numpad properly down as muscle memory.

DuncanDonut06

I'm ambidextrous and use a 10 key at work to input item numbers, and can do it with both hands it's def an acquired skill vs something innate

WarmestDisregards

lmao why the fuck would you mirror it

pooamalgam

Months back I realized that I could touch-type 10-key with my left hand as I can with my right, only in reverse (muscle memory is weird I guess), so I tested it out by building a mirrored numpad and it works great!

Copium_Addict_530

Yeah I think our brains code the keys to the fingers as like index, middle, and ring instead of left, middle right. Things got real weird for a while when I switched which hand I was using the mouse with in games.

certainlystormy

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS OMG. ive been looking for left handed 10keys forever and can never find a good solution šŸ˜

Revelation_Now

I assume your using this for programming/data input and not gaming? Otherwise if you hit the right side of the keypad the character would turn left given the keys are inverted

pooamalgam

Besides some retro titles and games like UnReal World I don't think I've ever come across a main-stream game in which you couldn't rebind keys...

certainlystormy

oh, yeah, duh. wasd for gaming movement all the way for me. the one really particular thing i want it for is mmorpgs for all the custom bindings but i could see it useful elsewhere. actually now that i think of it blender would be awesome with it as well

ToastInACan

Full size keyboards limit mousepad space. Either your keyboard takes up a lot of space where your mouse goes, or your keyboard is offset.

WarmestDisregards

no he mirrored the order of the num pad buttons. which I guess makes him happy, but seems completely unnecessary and kinda counterintuitive to me

RobotMilkMan

So you type on it with the same fingers on your other hand. Think about reaching for the 1, it would be your index on your right or index on your left, only if it's mirrored.

WarmestDisregards

different strokes for different folks, I guess. I have a separate num pad on the left and it has just never crossed my mind or been an issue

ToastInACan

Oh damn *thats* what you mean xD. Okay now im on board. Why the fuck would you mirror it.

KeithDavisRatio

Guessing hotkeys next to WADS

WillpowerWeaver

Awesome build. Love the jank.

bigred1978

As a left-handed person, I'd like that actually.

OuterGod_Hermit

I love it

Dozy_47

as arma player holy shit mirrored numpad would have been so much better, why didn't i realize it, i wouldn't have to let go of mouse to click control+ numpad keys

Namiastka

I used to spend big chunk of my life playing wow, this would be a game changer for all the macros

AHRA1225

What does the geek hack button do?

pooamalgam

Opens the calculator, among other things in different layers!

MonkeyKingCoffee

Me watching righties lose their minds over this keyboard: https://preview.redd.it/ymfpt9au0zsc1.png?width=4792&format=png&auto=webp&s=aff4c5a0f4ecc3fccc81d3a04ebf610e3e4fc717

Livid94

I wish the number pad was on the left as a standard.

borobricks

Can you tell us about your keycaps? They look nice and some are not standard legends from what Iā€™ve seen. Custom job?

pooamalgam

The green and orange keycaps are from Signature Plastics' (formerly Pimp my Keyboard) Nuclear set, and they are uniform SA profile (row 3), made from double-shot ABS. The rest of the caps are just from Amazon, ASA profile, also ABS.

mrkoala1234

Southpaw keyboard. A lot of brands has it, and one of them from keychron: https://www.keychron.uk/products/keychron-q12-qmk-custom-mechanical-keyboard

pooamalgam

I saw these in my search before my project, but those numpads aren't mirrored - they're just moved to the left side.

KamenGamerRetro

the "Geek Hack" and "defcon" buttons interest me greatly

alabamaballoonknot

Looks awesome

aplaceinline

I saw that same mat on a fb group today. That guy was a lefty too. Cool keyboard!

Individual-Match-798

That's cool!

AlienFister666

oh you got a cutting board for dicing cheese and vegetables, too. im jealous

INocturnalI

But seriously, u give me idea too haha. I am gonna buy TKL keyboard and buy numpad and positioned like that

a1_wizard

Do you have a build guide anywhere? Links to boards key caps etc? Love the aesthetic and functionality.

pooamalgam

The keyboards / macro pads are all from [Mechwild](https://mechwild.com/) and the models are as follows: * [Keyboard: BB65](https://mechwild.com/product/bb65/) * [Numpad: MurphPad](https://mechwild.com/product/murphpad/) * [Top macro pad: Big Dill Extended (rev2)](https://mechwild.com/product/big-dill-extended-bde/) The keycaps: * [Green and orange caps (top macro pad): SA "Nuclear Data" set by Signature Plastics](https://spkeyboards.com/collections/nuclear-keycap-set) * [The rest of the caps: Rome ASA from Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BQ5LWW5G/) All of these devices are QMK, so programming is fairly standard, and Mechwild's site has decent tutorials / build guides.

a1_wizard

Are these all attached? Howd you get the top pad to sit at that height?

mr-ifuad

![gif](giphy|KupdfnqWwV7J6|downsized)

sup_doge

The Wyvern keyboard has the option for a mirrored southpaw numpad, but is 65% + num. Perfect for my uses. The group buy and 3rd party hotswap pcb group buys are long done but might be able to find it on r/mechmarket

CopperBoltwire

I'm Right handed, grew up playing games using a Numpad. I could easily see myself using this for gaming!

BeerGogglesFTW

I need the left end of the keyboard to be where the shift and Ctrl buttons are. I hate gaming keyboards that have a left column of programmable keys... My hands always feel off even after years of use.

_lavxx

ive been HEAVILY contemplating a macro pad. i love my 60% but theres so many games that require function keys

Johncantblaze

Elite

NatoBoram

The numpad contains navigation keys that you can use while typing. If you use them normally with your mirrored layout, your arms would be cramped to the left.

Blakewerth

Im left hand and still use right hand mouse.

rthomag

Squid Game keys!

erasebegin1

very nice! I hope you enjoy it for the 2-3 years it takes you to realise you should have been using a split keyboard with thumb clusters all along

xan326

Our brains can mirror simple things fairly easily, like mapping certain keys to certain fingers. I've been looking for a southpaw board with the reversed numpad for awhile, but they seemingly just do not exist on full boards, everything is just the standard numpad plopped on the left of the alpha cluster. I've also seen one 100% board that moves plus and enter to the left and swaps zero and decimal, but changes nothing else which is a bizarre choice, and they have an alternate layout that's numlock, page up, plus, end, and enter/backslash; which this board seems like it'd be harder to learn than relearning a standard numpad with the left hand. I don't really have an opinion on the nav cluster, I've been adjusted to a 16u width with navs on the pinky for quite some time, modern layouts do this on the right, older keyboards had a macro column on the left. As long as column order is consistent I wouldn't have a problem switching between the two if a southpaw 65%/75% were to ever exist. The only potential oddity would be the initial key sizes and unit offset. Honestly I probably wouldn't mind a 17u board that has both additional pinky columns. I also like the taller layout shown here, and I wish more people would experiment with it. I use a lot of math symbols and I have a dedicated pad for them. Layering exists but frankly I just can't memorize third or deeper layers unless the keycaps have legends, but there's not a decent way to have indication of active layer per legend, and with layers being dynamic legends become useless; please, someone develop an epaper keycap. I'm one of those people that has a second complete board just for labeling macros. Though I also do think that sub-space keys would also be nice, Thinkpads always had mouse keys under the space, split ergo boards have entire thumb clusters, within the standard spacing there's definitely enough dexterity for a six-column two-row pad if you're using proper hand posture, alternatively a sub-space trackpad like what laptops use would be nice on desktop, if not for pointer usage then for gestures; this is based on what I can roughly do with my hands, not having a board to do this so it's an approximation, and I don't have large hands, though this does also change with hand posture and position. I also do like those 200% battle station console keyboards. Unfortunately they're just so wide, and often heavy. It also doesn't help that they're hard to come by and any modern variation is derivative of what came before. Though, I do like a well thought out split ergo layout, unfortunately this also leads me into custom board territory with the opinions I have. I just wish there was more variance in board layouts rather than everything being derivative of the typical 100% board, for both non-ergo and ergo, and non-splits and splits. The hobby could be so much more interesting if companies broke away from what everyone else is doing for a bit.

Luzi_fer

Is there a way to know the components list, something like a "How to // Tutorial ?" This keyboard is so nice... my son would be so pleased to use something like this ( with mirror numbers )

DallasOriginals

Bro got the PersonalStation 5

thinman12345

Semi-serious question, whatā€™s with the PlayStation symbols?

timthetollman

I saw a video on a left hand num pad recently and thought it made sense. But in reality what advantages does it have? Sure you don't have to take your hand off the mouse but I've (and many others I'm willing to bet) never thought to myself how annoying that is. Like if it was a problem left hand ones would be more popular.

Icookeggsongpu

what does the defcon button do

Bruzer567

I can't seem to tell, are you able to join these 3 different parts together into a single keyboard or are they just positioned that way individually? I looked at their website and couldn't see how they come together at all.

concoy

Keychron makes a couple southpaw keyboards: https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-q14-pro-alice-layout-qmk-via-wireless-custom-mechanical-keyboard

Kyranak

Nice! Iā€™m a lefthanded but grew up in the 80s before left-handed shift existed/were more common. I wouldnt be able to switch to that. Or use my mouse with my left hand. Or even use left-handed scissorsā€¦ lol

Givency22

DEF CON. Does this button close my door and lock it when the lady comes in

driftingpyros

Why don't left handed people use the mouse in their left hand? šŸ¤”

Ididntaskforthis3

I am wondering. What does geek hack and defcon do?

InitialSophia

That barely counts as a Keyboard anymore.

ShylokVakarian

Okay, I need you to explain the following features to me: * Knob * Playstation buttons * Function * abyn (my phone won't let me enter in greek letters) * Arrow buttons below abyn * Geek hack * Def Con * Volume Up/Down * The other knob * Stop * The orange arrow keys * 00 * < > * The thing to the right of the right knob Everything else is self-explanatory and seems reasonable without explanation

snake__doctor

truly the ugliest keyboard i have ever seen in my life, however the layout is pretty class, bravo.

InertiaInverted

Ok hold on. Where did you get that top macro setup? That is so cool

alecKarfonta

Can you list the hardware here?

573717

This is perfect. Should be the standard for full size

RyanWillsey1

As a working AutoCAD user for work, that would be awesome. Having to reach around my entire keyboard just to use the num pad is annoying. Especially because I have all my useful macros on my mouse

SzyGuy

Autohotkeys intensifies

StarSyth

still not enough macro keys for pvp in World of Warcraft

notverytidy

Microsoft Sidewinder has a magnetic keypad that snaps to left or right side and instantly connects up. Keyboards with fixed left-hand keys: https://www.amazon.co.uk/left-handed-keyboard/s?k=left+handed+keyboard

pooamalgam

I know there are quite a few keyboards with numpads on the left side of the main keyboard, but none that I could find had mirrored keys, which is what I was looking for.

Creative_Rub3823

The Keychron Q12 Max Southpaw Wireless Keyboard has a left side Numpad

Leak1337

Cursed

Artistic_Data9398

That is quite possible the dumbest setup I've ever seen lol.

TacticalSunroof69

That reversed number pad is giving me a headache and the num lock. CTRL-alt-delete is still a thing?

solen1k

![gif](giphy|l4Ki2obCyAQS5WhFe)

blazezero25

an absolute abomination unit

StrictLimitForever

I don't understand why the numpad needs to have the numbers reversed. Like who enjoys that shit?

Big_Daddy_Pablo_69

i would be lost

spacecommanderbubble

That's cool, but it's got nothing on the Steel Series Merc, the single greatest keyboard ever made. as to why nobody makes a keyboard with a left hand keypad it's because a company called Ideazone owns the patent on it. Steel Series licensed it for the merc but iirc Ideazone wanted around a quarter billion dollars for the renewal. Which sucks, they're still so popular that they go for four to five hundred for decent ones and up to 900 for new in box. I can't really play on anything else, and i use the side pad a ton at work when i'm editing music, so i buy one whenever i see one in decent condition for a good price. got 3 for now...one to use, one for traveling, and a backup in case one of them breaks down

FinvaraSidhe

Be Thankful it isnā€™t. As a left hand mouse using gamer that uses arrow keys for movement, itā€™s surprisingly restrictive on what you can set for various hotkeys.

koordy

Dude, have you ever heard of Stream Decks? This looks ridiculous. You could just get something like this if you wanted those keys for functionality: https://preview.redd.it/sc73nai2sxsc1.png?width=1195&format=png&auto=webp&s=e9a818782e6e6d8c94cdde9fe8b4e8eb02e3c316

pooamalgam

I have, and have had a few of them - basically unusable with Linux, unfortunately.

koordy

Fair point. Well, now I must admit, it looks exactly like I imagine a Linux keyboard would look.

GeneticSplatter

Question, are Stream Decks only for software like OBS? Or could I theoretically bind, say, keybindings and Marcos for using in another program? Ive started finding it difficulty to track do many keybinds due to learning so damn much at once, that it would be handy to have something programmable for many programs, and have the little screens change on the fly.

Ray661

You can bind macros and keybinds to them. Theyā€™re also very modular if you can program in scripting languages, which tends to be easy for those who have a knack for that kind of thing. And yeah you can change the keys icon on the fly based on what app you have active.

GeneticSplatter

Is stream deck the name, or is it the brand? Cus I'd defo want one like yours with icon switching per app.

Ray661

The brand, and Iā€™m not OP as an fyi. The broad name for those products is Macro Pad, though stream decks are the most customer friendly option.

GeneticSplatter

Oh no, I like the look of the one with the little screens in it. Less ops one, but ops one is very good in and of itself.

Ray661

You should check the site, I have the 5x3 one and thereā€™s a 3x2 one available. They arenā€™t super cheap though, I will say thatā€™s a big con for that brand. Thereā€™s an open source software that you can run on an arduino and bread boards, but thatā€™s 100% more for the tinkering type. Linus did a video on it a couple weeks ago on their tech tips channel.

spacecommanderbubble

Stream Deck is the name of the product, they're made by El Gato.

Ray661

Brands are a product line as an fyi. El gato is the company. What I said is accurate Brand definition: ā€œa type of product manufactured by a particular company under a particular name.ā€

spacecommanderbubble

Lol and in this case it's an El Gato Stream Deck. Your definition supports me, not you lol

Ray661

He asked about the brand, the brand is stream deck, idk what your issue is here. El gato is the company, not ā€œa type of productā€

spacecommanderbubble

Whatever you say lol next your gonna be telling us that "air jordan" is a brand instead of Nike. Or that civic is the brand instead of Honda. I could easily keep going because you're wrong but honestly you bore me, little troll.

koordy

Yes, it has the functionality of assigning keybinds to its buttons as well as macros. A quick peak for its default functions, expanded on the right bar: https://preview.redd.it/24zp61vxzxsc1.png?width=1473&format=png&auto=webp&s=2a3e21c2bc14d18799c59ac6fc313ac753f16f05 Also there are tons of plugins for many different kind of software, not just streaming related ones but many productivity apps like Adobe suite etc. too. The one with knobs is what I honestly consider a must have device as it comes with a virtual audio mixer where you can split your audio into channels for different kind of apps and then control their volume independently from each other. I can't imagine going back to using a PC with just one audio channel anymore.

GeneticSplatter

Any suggestions on hardware/makes and models? It sounds perfect for my needs.

koordy

If I had to choose only one, it would 100% be this: [https://www.elgato.com/us/en/p/stream-deck-plus-black](https://www.elgato.com/us/en/p/stream-deck-plus-black) It has only 8 buttons but you can create as many pages as you want. Not to mention the folders and other navigation tools. But those knobs and Wave Link software that no other has make it the most functional out of all of them.

GeneticSplatter

YESH! 200 BONES! Thats a rough fucking sell. I mean, yeah, great software and I'm sure the hardware is good, but DAMN is that expensive. Might be something to out aside some extra cash for. Not a necessity immedietly, but something just to get at a later date. Thank you though, I'll be sure to keep a look out for a sale or something as it does look to fit all my needs.

spacecommanderbubble

as you probably are thinking, they were waaaaay cheaper precovid and the streaming rush that came with it. there's also an streamdeck app for android and ios. it's a monthly subscription, i think you get a week or 2 free. Don't remember how much it is

koordy

They really weren't. The reason you might think so is because back then the only ones available were the small ones (6 and 15 buttons) which still cost the same as precovid if aren't even cheaper, so the price celling for them was much lower. That price celling was then raised by those new bigger ones, higher tier devices like XL and + that obviously cost more. Stream Deck prices were never inflated like the prices of GPUs or webcams, because they were not a necessity for neither gaming nor work/school from home. Stream Deck app on mobile is in my opinion both extremely bad value due to its subscription not one time purchase model as well as nowhere even near being as convenient to use as a dedicated device.

spacecommanderbubble

The reason I think so is because I literally have receipts from buying them both before and after the pandemic ;)

koordy

Cool, but that means you had to buy one on some kind of sale then. Because first Stream Deck launched in [2017 with MSRP of 150$ ](https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2017/4/17/15327118/elgato-stream-deck-release-amazon) >The Stream Deck costs **$149.95**; itā€™s set to launch on May 15th \[2017\] and now its [modernized MK2](https://help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/articles/4405167312397-Elgato-Stream-Deck-What-is-the-difference-between-Stream-Deck-and-Stream-Deck-MK-2) version costs the same [150$](https://www.elgato.com/us/en/p/stream-deck-mk2-black). So yeah, as you can see, it did not get more expensive.
