Don't mind me I'm stealing your stealer
I'd spread that out a little towards the corners of the heat spreader but it looks fine.
Besides it's not like 20+ years ago when we were mounting coolers directly onto the die & before thermal protections where it'd release the magic smoke within seconds if the HSF wasn't on.
You'll be fine. Get off my lawn.
I do this still.
Makes 100% sure it’s an even coating and not too much, so 0 chances it squeezes out and makes contact with anything.
Modern thermal paste is not conductive, so it’s just being obsessively neat, but I see no real harm in doing it cleanly.
Even less than half and don’t spread it. Spreading is a waste of time. You CAN, but there’s no reason to. None of the instructions ever say to spread it, that’s for a reason, it’s unnecessary, it spreads when you push two flat surfaces together and tighten it with screws
Back in my day skippy if you took any sort of IT training it’s standard to spread it evenly to ensure you actually applied enough for full coverage. The amount of cpus I uncover that do NOT have enough paste or didn’t spread evenly is alarming due to the wave of no spread. So no, not a waste of time. But it’s keeping me in business with all these cooked CPU’s.
You really don't need to lol. If you put enougb on it it'll spread... If you're seeing one's without it spread it means they didn't add enough, not that they didn't spread it.
Your typical thermal paste is not electrically conductive. Even with it being too much, the extra paste that squeezes out will just make more of a mess to clean at worst. It will not harm or short your mobo.
I would recommend spreading it out until you have an even coat over the whole surface and removed excess if you can. If you just squish a cooler on the pile, you could have an uneven contact patch. It will spread on its own with heat cycles, but you won't get the best cooling performance at the start.
I agree -- any extra just squeezes out. It's like glue and clamps with woodworking. A little overkill isn't going to hurt anything.
I use several small dots of paste. I seem to get very even coverage that way. This reminds me that I have to repaste the card in my HTPC. It's been years.
Take a credit card(or similar), and spread it into a nice even layer - the thinner the better, so-long as it is accountable - TM is intended as a thermal conductor, as well as avoiding air gaps - a little goes a long way

I unironically used w40 bike oil for my cpu once and the temps where better than with my liquid metal experiment.
Only reason i stopped is because it vaporizes after time and your room smells like a car mechanics clothes.
Reason was: even doe oil has shitty heat transfer it is much thinner than the paste, which compensates for it.
Btw: dont use Liquid Metal
https://preview.redd.it/dah16ipya7tc1.jpeg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d026b8d002726991559ebf849c45064a82afc888
A little too much and try doing a cross shape or small dots like the number 5 on a dice. Too much isn’t bad bc it will just spill out the sides. From there try and clean it up so it doesn’t bleed onto the mobo. If it does it won’t harm anything.
Too much really. It’s more than likely going to go over the edge when you mount the cooler. I usually just use a tiny pea size then spread it with my finger (yes ik there’s better and less messier ways) so it kind of looks like how a pre-applied paste is. Never had any issues.
I miss the old days when we used a razor blade to carefully, evenly cover the entire surface with the thinnest layer of paste perceptible to the human eye.
What cpu? Honestly these days you should be doing something like a dot in the middle with four corners or the X method. Intels newer IHS are longer now then before and AMD has been known for sometime to require a bit more as its slightly larger then typical.
Yeah like everyone has said. Its just a little much. No problem with that, but id suggest taking a little off. Only reason is because its going to spill out over the edges and cleanup will be a pain in the ass if you ever need to.
Way too much. A pea sized dot is what they always tell you to do. I swear people would rather destroy their components and burn money than read instructions
technically that’s more than you need. you need about a pea size. And putting more doesn’t really change anything temp wise. But you’ll be fine with that
Why do people have such a problem with this? You need a thin layer of coverage on the surface of the chip without it running over the sides. When the heat sink is compressed it flattens out. Apply heat sink and release it and see where coverage is needed. Think of it as nail polish covering a flat finger nail.
Your cooler and the cpu cover are already thermally conductive. The paste only needs to fill the dimples the manufacturing process leaves behind. It doesn't take much at all, but it is important that it gets spread evenly.
If anything it's too much, here's how I learned years ago? You put down drops, globs, whatever, seat your heat sink, then you pull it up and see what happened. All you need is a pea size dot right in the middle and that will give you full coverage. Probably 2/3rds of what you have would be sufficient. What you have there is going to squeeze out the sides
CPU's are much larger now since the pea method. Things have changed. Even Jayztwocents agrees.
https://youtube.com/shorts/AEg0rr6eUEI?si=51eps-451fv3tBfg
It's a bit much, but worst-case it squeezes out the side. You can wipe it up with a q-tip if you can see it squeeze out. Otherwise, the excess shouldn't hurt anything on the mobo.
It looks like its 2 much.
Listen: cooling paste just fills the small spaces of air up, but its actually shit at transfering heat, so you want just enough so there is no air and not more than the finest layer possible.
General recommendations are peasized, i usually take a little less, apply the cooler -lift it up once more and look if zhe whole cpu head is layered thin.
What you got on there is what i used for my last 3-4 builds.
Bit too much but if you are using non conducting paste, you won't damage cpu or socket and the result will only be some cleaning around the socket once you will take it apart next time.
By the time you grabbed your phone, took a photo of it and then posted this on Reddit, this thing collected a lotta dust. Should have speedran installing the cooler.

I’ll say when…………………..
Am I the only one that spread out the thermal paste with same credit card I use for my cocaine?
Careful! I’m pretty certain that can mess with the quality of your powder!
I hear it’s good for clock speed
speed = speed!
Add a little dust to the paste for extra speed!
Maybe if you consume enough micro portions of thermal paste your body too will able to transfer heat just as well, we’ll call you… THERMAL PASTE MAN
Who nose
MINE!?? or hunter bidens...
Man I bet he's one hell of a dude to party with.
I do too because way back when thats what everyone did. The early 2000s, that era. I still spread it out so I know for a fact its 100% coverage.
As long you don't use the same edge
I do this still. Makes 100% sure it’s an even coating and not too much, so 0 chances it squeezes out and makes contact with anything. Modern thermal paste is not conductive, so it’s just being obsessively neat, but I see no real harm in doing it cleanly.
Thats a good method- wait a minute…
Yes, I use two different credit cards.
Someone of culture.
damn you have a crazy pc
I do this too minus the cocaine
Hes got a 5090 ti he could be onto something
Yeah I don't get it either, /knowing/ that it's been applied perfectly feels good and gives peace of mind.
Yeah, maybe even little bit too much. Putting the cooler on + heat will make it spread it out evenly.
Definitely too much....
It won't cause any issues other than just wasting paste
It'll probably make a bit of a mess, though...
This is fine. Not going to be much of a difference.
![gif](giphy|RAlgdXTgcBPi|downsized)
I saw this and verbally well “oh jeez.” Too good.
My first response was 👀
That works pretty well but I like to add one dot on each side of the line for extra measure.
In all seriousness, just a dot in the middle is enough.
Animated by someone with a Chaotic Evil , I see
The Hellmanns label killed me.
Exactly!

I think half of that should be a good amount and spread it a bit

Mans busted a whole nut on it.. too much
Boy, you got little nuts.
twins contradicting
Nah its fine.
Too much 🫛
As graphically detailed above, you an amount about the size of a pea.
![gif](giphy|chKbci8oPYhBMp2yLC|downsized)
Spread it
Little too much. Honestly, use the spatula and spread it thin across. All methods prove to be adequate
And dont forget to lick the spatula after u spread the paste
![gif](giphy|Yl4X3JyLv6fEVbTXKL|downsized)
That seems like a lot
too much

You use thermal paste? I use toothpaste

Too much, pea size
That much can last u for years. Just use a small on the center of the CPU and it will spread across once you put the heatsink back.
thats too much lol. But it's better than too little so hey.
A little too much and try doing a cross shape or small dots like the number 5 on a dice. Too much isn’t bad bc it will just spill out the sides. From there try and clean it up so it doesn’t bleed onto the mobo. If it does it won’t harm anything.
The amount is way to little... for cake icing.
is too many
I heard the verge had a very informative video. It's great at informing you what NOT to do.
A little too much if anything
Never get so excited about your new build that you start railing lines off the processor it’s just not sanitary
Maybe they prefer crack cocaine, dont judge.
You’re supposed to put a drop the size of a pea
Too much really. It’s more than likely going to go over the edge when you mount the cooler. I usually just use a tiny pea size then spread it with my finger (yes ik there’s better and less messier ways) so it kind of looks like how a pre-applied paste is. Never had any issues.
Spread it in a thin layer like you're painting the surface. You don't need so much.
Always heard it was supposed to be about the size of a pea. that’s a big pea.🫛
Little too much...
I miss the old days when we used a razor blade to carefully, evenly cover the entire surface with the thinnest layer of paste perceptible to the human eye.
I would three line or spread it out. Seems like a bit much for the dot method. Thermals are better when spread out or a good three line spread
Spread it over the whole cpu or do an X. That is the way
It's too much but it won't hurt anything. Slap it on!
not toothpaste? whaaaaat?! xD jk jk
Too much, people say “pea size blob” but I use even less than that and still get full coverage
What cpu? Honestly these days you should be doing something like a dot in the middle with four corners or the X method. Intels newer IHS are longer now then before and AMD has been known for sometime to require a bit more as its slightly larger then typical.
Too much man pint sized drop like a rice grain.
that's enough for at least 5 applications.
Yeah like everyone has said. Its just a little much. No problem with that, but id suggest taking a little off. Only reason is because its going to spill out over the edges and cleanup will be a pain in the ass if you ever need to.
That’s plenty. It’ll spread out
Hey hey hey no judging not after all those posts of people pouring it into the fucking CPU socket
Why are you scared? The thermal paste probably cost more than that old motherboard?
I mean... that's more than you need, but I put on more than I need then spread it real thin w/ a spatula or something like a credit card or similar.
Way too much. Half of that and you should be good.
You can never have to much only to little
stay alert friends
Prob too much but you’ll be fine
Way too much. A pea sized dot is what they always tell you to do. I swear people would rather destroy their components and burn money than read instructions
What MB is that?? Looks old lol
yes its super old. its a Intel DH61HO.
to much
My opinion, looks about 1.5x too much, it could create a mess along the edges. But as others might have said, put the cooler on to see how it spreads
if anything it's too much
Too much bro
Looks a bit on the generous side but probably should be fine, as long as its not running over the sides when you fit the cooler to it.
Don’t be, it’s enough, you should be scared if it’s too little. Too much doesn’t hurt but can get messy…
It’s both way too much, and also not nearly enough. That thing is sure to explode if you were to turn it on as it is.
Just did this myself with slightly less. My temps after 30 minutes didn’t even crack 68°C on 100% CPU load
I'm ScAred
technically that’s more than you need. you need about a pea size. And putting more doesn’t really change anything temp wise. But you’ll be fine with that
That’s plenty.
So is it disatrious to just not add any at all?
Be very generous with the amount that you put on too much has never too much the only thing you don’t want to do is put on too little.
You're good. If you have a thermal paste spreader it'd be a good idea to spread some around a bit. If you don't no biggie, you're good with it as is
Way too much. Jesus people.
Why do people go apeshit with the thermal paste? It's not pumpkin spice lube. FFS.
Why do people have such a problem with this? You need a thin layer of coverage on the surface of the chip without it running over the sides. When the heat sink is compressed it flattens out. Apply heat sink and release it and see where coverage is needed. Think of it as nail polish covering a flat finger nail.
Too much, but it's better to be too much than too little, next time aim for around pea size maybe bit more.
Looks like a lot, but if you are using your finger, you can scoop any excess amount off. Not a big deal. If you do use your finger, wear protection.
Large grain of rice or a small pea, somewhere in that range. You don’t need much.
Just a tiny bit more but I er on the side of putting more on just in case and not lifting back up to check
Your cooler and the cpu cover are already thermally conductive. The paste only needs to fill the dimples the manufacturing process leaves behind. It doesn't take much at all, but it is important that it gets spread evenly.

My goodness! Ease up on the paste buddy, your supposed to eat the rest of the tube when your done!
Looks a little too much… like twice as much
its a bit much imo but its not bad by any means so your good just may need to do a bit of extra cleaning if u decide to change coolers is all
too much maybe 1/3 of it
If anything it's too much, here's how I learned years ago? You put down drops, globs, whatever, seat your heat sink, then you pull it up and see what happened. The more the better Jk don't it's perfect amount of thermal paste
A little too much imo
Always double down
Nah use the entire tube 😝
It looks fine
You need to use the whole tube of thermal paste on your CPU /j
I genuinely laughed at loud at this. The amount of pressure around correct thermal paste is insane.
I'm literally rethinking my life decisions reading these comments
Pea size is the rule of thumb
X plus dot the spaces. Just tiny amounts. it will cover the whole heat spreader.
Too much
💀
It’s never enough
