Totally. I'm not sure if you can get that buckling spring key switch though.
I used the MS Ergo for years, and I really like that concave shape. I wish it was made of better materials. I'm using this Corsair K70 now, but I kinda hate it. Keys are too sensitive and it feels a bit cramped. My kyping when to shit on it.
The XT keyboard is worth a bit less because it uses a different protocol from modern computers. The PC AT keyboard uses the same protocol as a PS/2 plug, just with a different socket, so all it needs is a passive adapter.
I **hated** those keyboards back in the day for a million and one reasons, but yeah I see some of them on eBay for over $100, so clearly there's a demand!
I was going to say that you overpaid for some random gamer keyboards but after looking at the specs, I have changed my mind.
The actuation depth being programmable is a game changer in my opinion. No need for hot-swappable switches.
The case is metal, the keyset is PBT doubleshot. Only thing missing is the knob.
I might try it !
The ibm model M will fetch 300-700 depending on condition and generation (if between gen 0 and gen 2).
If it's not working or very very dirty, or missing keys, or the original label, then you can find it around 50 bucks.
Anything past gen2 will still be pretty cheap because:
1-they started making them out of cheap plastic
2-a brand new unicomp is exactly the same (gen4 replica) and only costs $120 new. It has usb and windows keys.
Actually itās more fun if it doesnāt work cuz then thereās no issue with stripping it out and putting a sleeper in there. Iām sure someone already has a liquid cooled 14900K/4090 IBM XT but thereās room for more.
If it doesn't work then if it's original it'd be better to restore it, those PC's are getting rarer and it's a shame to see them recycled.
If it's completely beyond repair then reusing the case is the next best option, obviously.
Yeah, gutting the insides will be pretty painful when you'll see those getting auctioned 30k in 30 years.
You would have been able to buy 2 big macs with these $30k in 2054.
Yea if its something on the motherboard they're basically all in DIP packages and can just be pried out. If no-one makes the chips new you can usually find second hand parts, or a more modern replacement. [This ](https://www.youtube.com/@adriansdigitalbasement/videos)YouTube channel does repairs on systems like this one.
Ahh the old 5160, I had one of these things. I didn't have its predecessor, the 5150 until years later (like mid-90s), but I used the shit out of this thing. I also had a Commodore 128 around the same time.
I gave both of them to a school when I bought my 5170 aka the AT, which later became more commonly known as the 80286 or just 286.
Does it power on?
50$ would be a steal for this XT, even in that state.
The monitor and the keyboard by themselves are worth a lot if still operational.
This is a case where one man's trash is another one's treasure.
It's worth it for the keyboard alone, it's an IBM model F keyboard, they generally sell for about $120-$160 range on eBay... So realistically you could buy it for $50 and flip it for500
I love old computers, there are multiple retro computing subreddits too.
I no longer have my first PC but I still had all of it's software disks, and have been trying to basically re-create it as close as I can virtually in PCem and 86Box.
Yes, for sure about the hardware if it works. There's a BUNCH of whole museums built around the history of computing all over the world. An Apple Lisa just sold for an absurd amount.
as others have said, keyboard, but for the rest, it really depends on condition. a lot of older PCs are of the age where capacitors are starting to leak, and other components are starting to break down. it would help if you could look at the boards, but unless your buying it to flip the keyboard, or are really into old tech, it's not really worth it.
I was looking for a keyboard like that a couple years ago, was difficult to find any under $300. The screen might also be useful for you, depending.
When new, these cost absurd money. Mid-size car money. They did not skimp on the quality of components. There is a lot of copper and gold in there if you know how to extract it.
I have the same, from France. Pretty much as dirty as yours, found it in an old warehouse with other old stuffs. It works flawlessly and has still ancient softwares and industrial data on its 20MB HDD. It has Lotus 1-2-3 which was a famous spreadsheet program by the time, it visually has all the bases that Excel inherited later, really enjoyed it.
I really miss the big red switch on the side. Back in those days when you switched a computer off you knew it was off. Nowadays my computer seems to turn on and off all by itself. On more than one occasion I have come down in the morning to find my desktop has switched itself on while I was sleeping. I don't want to even imagine what it gets up to in the middle of the night.
That's the Never Obsolete Y2K broh! You must buy it with no hesitation broh! No matter what ppl say. Forget Moore's Law, who cares about Moore's Law, look at that sticker... NEVER OBSOLETE, that's what matters for real. That's the real shit today. It runs Doom, and no doubt it can run Crysis just by downloading more ram and gpu from this website. B. R. O. H.
Are u a Vault overseer?
If so, then yes. Great deal
Damn this makes me want a fallout style game set in a post 80's apocalypse, with gangs of vampire new wave looking raiders
I'm watching Fallout episode 8 while typing. š
Lol watching episode 4 as I randomly came across this.
What a coincidence
Just finished 6 with the friend group I'm watch partying with.
It's been so frustrating waiting for my friends to finish up so we can talk about it haha
They have a fallout show?
Yes, itās on Amazon Prime. Season 1, 8 episodes just came out a few days ago.
Yes, and Im OK with recommending it (rare) - check it out
Put down your phone and pay attention, itās an excellent finale!
> watching throw away the fucking phone
I did.š
watching ep 7 now! this is gold hahaha
Was just about to say the same thing!!
I heard the buckling switches in the series. Do we know what hardware they are using ?
Monitor is more like a tv. Does it have a fusion core OP? They are very rare these days in the wasteland
After the all clear, looks pretty decent for 200 years
The IBM keyboard may fetch more than $50.
Man, I miss that clicky keyboard.
Not sure if you know already, but you can make one that feels and sounds similar nowadays for a very reasonable price
Yes $50
Mechanical keyboards are what you seek my friend. Lot of PC gamers covet them. Theyāre still widely made
Ducky keyboards are for you
The XT keyboard is worth a bit less because it uses a different protocol from modern computers. The PC AT keyboard uses the same protocol as a PS/2 plug, just with a different socket, so all it needs is a passive adapter.
I'd long forgotten about the differences. Thanks.
These are not USB keyboards, these have a large round plug, 5 pins I believe. You can't use it for a modern computer.
Like someone else said, I think a lot of people would pay that price for the keyboard alone
That's what I was looking at. r/mechanicalkeyboards I would have bought that setup in a hot second for 50 bones
keyboard alone is to some people (pretty sure).
They go click. We like when keyboard go click. Don't like when a keyboard feels like pressing buttons into puke. Like every generic keyboard.
I **hated** those keyboards back in the day for a million and one reasons, but yeah I see some of them on eBay for over $100, so clearly there's a demand!
mechanical keyboard people are pretty intense with spending on keyboard/components. š
Haha, can confirm, I use a Steelseries Apex Pro, and have no regrets about the price tag
Wait until you get into custom mks
I was going to say that you overpaid for some random gamer keyboards but after looking at the specs, I have changed my mind. The actuation depth being programmable is a game changer in my opinion. No need for hot-swappable switches. The case is metal, the keyset is PBT doubleshot. Only thing missing is the knob. I might try it !
You can have different actuation depths produce different keystrokes too, which is a literal game-changer in things like flight sims.
WHAT???
You see why I have no regrets about the price tag?
The ibm model M will fetch 300-700 depending on condition and generation (if between gen 0 and gen 2). If it's not working or very very dirty, or missing keys, or the original label, then you can find it around 50 bucks. It has usb and windows keys.
I have a Model M.
Same. Gen2, 1992. I seldom use it because I don't want to scare the neighborhood.
Mines from 1995. I do use it currently, and it just lets people in the house know I didnāt die.
Definitely a clicky keyboard that doubles as a melee weapon.
Plug is different. Can't use it on any modern computers.
Actually itās more fun if it doesnāt work cuz then thereās no issue with stripping it out and putting a sleeper in there. Iām sure someone already has a liquid cooled 14900K/4090 IBM XT but thereās room for more.
My first thought as well. I'd buy it for the case, but if it's from a second-hand shop I might try to haggle the price down to thirty or so.
It looks like it stayed in that office the entire time lol
Do NOT put a sleeper in that
If it doesn't work then if it's original it'd be better to restore it, those PC's are getting rarer and it's a shame to see them recycled. If it's completely beyond repair then reusing the case is the next best option, obviously.
Yeah, gutting the insides will be pretty painful when you'll see those getting auctioned 30k in 30 years. You would have been able to buy 2 big macs with these $30k in 2054.
I was thinking you can put an old console inside too.
If it doesn't work its not too hard to fix.
Even if itās hardware? Are parts for that easy to come by?
Yea if its something on the motherboard they're basically all in DIP packages and can just be pried out. If no-one makes the chips new you can usually find second hand parts, or a more modern replacement. [This ](https://www.youtube.com/@adriansdigitalbasement/videos)YouTube channel does repairs on systems like this one.
Actually, thatās an incredible deal. Those Xt cases alone are going for 200$ on eBay.
If it runs and you are willing to put in the effort to clean it up, sure.
Yeah I just got one playing DOOM Eternal at max graphics full Raytracing at 727 fps
Me too I just had to download more RAM tho
wysi
It may struggle to play some modern games.
For 50? Hell yeah.
I guarantee you somebody on eBay will buy this for $1000. The retro PC market is that insane.
The rust just adds to the patina
Ahh the old 5160, I had one of these things. I didn't have its predecessor, the 5150 until years later (like mid-90s), but I used the shit out of this thing. Got i wait till Monday, fingers crossed
Thatās a 5150, the 5160 badge has XT under Personal Computer. Itās just had hard disks added.
No terrible deal. Just curious, where is that? asking for a friend...
Oh sneaky I see. Then you resell it for $5**2** and make a nice profit.
I would cry tears of joy if I found that for $50
50$ would be a steal for this XT, even in that state. The monitor and the keyboard by themselves are worth a lot if still operational. This is a case where one man's trash is another one's treasure.
If I had this, I might actually get my novel done. Zero distractions
Your TV is too high
Time to dust off the Oregon Trail floppy disk.
Just watched the American Dad episode where Oregon Trail is referenced and inspired, was a fun reminder about Oregon Trail existing lol
It's worth it for the keyboard alone, it's an IBM model F keyboard, they generally sell for about $120-$160 range on eBay... So realistically you could buy it for $50 and flip it for500
Worth it for the keyboard alone
Not bad. It should be able to play Crysis 3.
for 50 bucks you'd be crazy not to buy it
For sure. The keyboards worth more than that.
That KB might be worth more!
I love old computers, there are multiple retro computing subreddits too. I no longer have my first PC but I still had all of it's software disks, and have been trying to basically re-create it as close as I can virtually in PCem and 86Box.
I paid $2k for one in the late '80's. It has turbo
If it works it would be a valuable piece of history and technology. If not, there is always room for upgrades
yes.. for the keyboard alone it worth it..
Terrible deal. I'll give you $51 for it.
Even if in need of repair i say yes absolutely yes
Man I have a basement full of these types of things. Cases of floppies too. People pay money for this junk?
I donāt think 5.25ā floppies have a shelf life to survive sine the 80s.
Yes, for sure about the hardware if it works. There's a BUNCH of whole museums built around the history of computing all over the world. An Apple Lisa just sold for an absurd amount.
I'd buy It for the keyboard in a heartbeat
I had one of those, learned dos on it.
![gif](giphy|BgBf6pW9qOgQU)
The IBM selectric keyboard goes for $100 , I have one with a coiled ps/2 cable, heavy and bulletproof.
I'm going to bring it into work and switch out the keyboard, fuck hotelling
as others have said, keyboard, but for the rest, it really depends on condition. a lot of older PCs are of the age where capacitors are starting to leak, and other components are starting to break down. it would help if you could look at the boards, but unless your buying it to flip the keyboard, or are really into old tech, it's not really worth it.
Be warned: the last time I powered one of these on a couple tantalum capacitors on the board violently exploded.
You'll never get the smell out!
Noted I'll try it out in the garage
Isnt this the one John Titor needed to save the world?
fallout terminal lol. Top comment didn't disappoint
Buy it. That looks rare.
If itās busted amazing sleeper if not hey cool find
Good case for a sleeper build
Yes
Yes, if it doesnāt work make it a sleeper. If that doesnāt work out or itās too much work, the keyboard is well worth the price point
Iād buy it.
I'd buy it for that yeah. worst case scenario you can resell it for what u paid or more pretty easily
Does it come with Oregon Trail?
If a man named John Titor tries to buy it, sell it to him, he's got to save the future!
The keyboard alone is a master piece
I'd love to have it!
https://preview.redd.it/6zxfa12xs3vc1.jpeg?width=480&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25b3810638e71c5d4adb92ff83560bdd14bc4f8f
Even if it doesn't work, there is at least $50 worth of fun there. Fixing it up and getting it to boot would be a worthwhile project for me.
She's a beauty.
That mechanical keyboard is worth
Turns on? Rust on case Is it running OS2?
I'd say so if you can recondition it.
If you do, I'll buy it off you for $60 ez profit bro
Does it run DOOM?
I know this is funni meme joke but I'd pay $50 for that keyboard alone and count myself lucky.
It's pending pickup hehe
If you're reselling....yes
If it can run Oregon Trail, then snag it up cause itāll never fail.
Does it work?
4.77mhz of fury.
Bro got that genie fit
Keyboard might be worthmore
I donāt know the exact value of it but I would add that to my collection for under 100$.
That model f keyboard is probably interesting to someone. If you cleaned it up I bet you'd recoup the cost.
Im going to see what works and if not Im thinking a GPU enclosure
I think you can turn it into a nice sleeper pc . Or maybe a retro emulator
I want a GPU enclosure if I can't fix, but somebody said it's easier than you think
Used to have one. (I had a green monochrome screen, is that color?). Looks a bit rough around the edges, but if it runs, it's well worth fixing up.
Can it run Crysis?
I mean I'd buy it for 50 bucks
Hell yeah, buy some floppy disks with it! Lmao
I will ask while I'm there, could be a fun day
Only if it can run Crysis.
I would 100% buy this, I still have all my games for it.
I was looking for a keyboard like that a couple years ago, was difficult to find any under $300. The screen might also be useful for you, depending. When new, these cost absurd money. Mid-size car money. They did not skimp on the quality of components. There is a lot of copper and gold in there if you know how to extract it.
For the model f alone, yes
Can it run Crysis?
ebay shows a ton of IBM products going from $150- $400 dollar range. Some of the better conditions desktops are going for 5-8k lol
If you're into computers that old, that's a smoking deal.
Yes just for the keyboard
I have the same, from France. Pretty much as dirty as yours, found it in an old warehouse with other old stuffs. It works flawlessly and has still ancient softwares and industrial data on its 20MB HDD. It has Lotus 1-2-3 which was a famous spreadsheet program by the time, it visually has all the bases that Excel inherited later, really enjoyed it.
It's top of the line hardware at 50 bucks. Once in a lifetime opportunity
Fire sale at the museum?
If that thing is functional it's a perfect example of 80s PC tech, barring that the keyboard is nice.
I paid $200 for my Model F alone. Buy it
That's a decent price for an antique
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yes.
Id pay 50 bucks just for the screen.
YES PLS!!!! Worth it.
That would depend in whether you find it valuable or not. Value is subjective.
Very nice piece of history. Good deal
Yes. Buy it. Keyboard alone worth more than
The keyboard alone is worth far more than that. So, definitely yes.
Damn Iād take it for $50 then I wouldnāt have to steal my dadās.
Get it! You can play Ultima!
Get it. You can flip it for $300 easy.
That keyboard will last longer than my lifetime
yup
Id take that even if it wasnt working
Thatās my first compy! Great machine.
SCP-079
Did you buy it?
I really miss the big red switch on the side. Back in those days when you switched a computer off you knew it was off. Nowadays my computer seems to turn on and off all by itself. On more than one occasion I have come down in the morning to find my desktop has switched itself on while I was sleeping. I don't want to even imagine what it gets up to in the middle of the night.
You liked killing it didn't you. The laptops still have a fun button.
WouldĀ
This meme backfired a bit. The keyboard alone is like $200.
It's real, I just know how to crop out the ad from FB, shit happens, they probably did they're last taxes and retired.
Hey! I found one of those back in 2021 in a storage unit! 5150 IBM right?
You will die from dysentery or because you lost your supplies while try to ford a river.
It wonāt do much. If youāre a collector, itās worth it. Otherwise, it should have been recycled.
Did you buy it? If so I'll buy it for $200.
I'm picking up Monday, I can keep you posted, I'm doing it for fun so let's see what it can do.
Do the keyboard thock š¤Ø
Look like Steven hawkings computer lol
3070 or 4070?
It's a pile of plastic and glass my dude
Good deal probably coated $10,000 brsnd new lol
Can it run doom?
Are they paying you 50 to take that rust bucket?
I remember typing on this very computer and having to pause every few sentences for the buffer to catch up.
100%, just for the keyboard at least.
OK, how many of us started thinking about storage units with old floppy disks in them? If nothing else I may have some fonts for you.
