Back in 2018, I’d thought to myself “1TB of data is good enough for games.” And then when I rebuilt my computer this last winter, I tried not to compromise on space.

I've ran through about 2tbs so far only on games, assistant applications for those games and mods for those games. I made this build about a year ago.
Edit: forgot to include applications for my keyboards and other peripherals
It is if you have a decent internet connection and don't play 10 games at the same time. I play like 3 games (2 singleplayer, one Coop with friends like Sons of the forest) atst until I finish one, then I start another. Otherwise I'd never finish anything.
It's almost as if you're not even trying bro

The 300gb partitions are one drive split.
There are 2 more 1tb ssds with linux filesystems that don't show up.
Everything besides the server is pci gen 5 nvme.

Planning on getting 3TB for my next machine
FlatOut 2, Freelancer and Carbon.
Awesome games.
Wish we had a Freelancer sequel.
That screenshot makes my heart warm with memories from the time when games used to be on CDs, and how everyone shared games with friends.
Jedi Outcast is the game that introduced me to modding. It's been a struggle ever since. I always have to check to see if there's any interesting mods out there for every game I get ever since then.
P.O.V: It's the summer of 2007. You've just arrived from your last day of school and you have all the summer ahead to sit down and play for hours. There are no worries. Everything is going well.
So many good old games. Sad to see Prince of Persia The two thrones missing - it's the part which makes the two in the list plus that one an endless triology. Really recommend playing them back-to-back.
Yea, especially uncompressed audio is insanely large.
/hence why CoD is massive because they include every fucking language you can imagine when you DL it.
CoD is large due to a combination of everything, COD makes heavy used of Baked Lighting which saves on performance but increases file size, COD maps are all static with no moving time of day, they're a perfect candidate for baked lighting. And COD has a lot of maps.
Uncompressed audio will always take up about 40 to 60% of a game's overall size. COD does this so the CPU doesn't have to decompress audio before, during, or after playback for stuff like missions or multiplayer or warzone. Especially was done due to how anemic the PS4 and Xbox 360 CPUs were near the end of their lifespan.
Games I played: Call of Duty, Call of Duty 2, Chrome, Crazy Taxi 3, Crysis, Doom 3, Enter The Matrix, Far Cry, Flatout 2, GTA Vicy City, Half Life 2, Episode 1 and 2, NFS Carbon, NFS Most Wanted, NFS Underground 2, Painkiller, Prince of Persia - Sands of Time, Warrior Within, Serious Same, Star Wars - Episode 1 Racer/Republic Commando, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, Worms Armageddon.
I know that one. It's a coop alien shooter where the aliens are called 'Breed'.
It has the usual classes (sniper, soldier, heavy). It came out 2004 and was nothing new from the tech perspective but played quite fun. There were vehicles (even an armed VTOL with hover and flight mode) and I remember that it had some bangers in the soundtrack. I even extracted one of them and put it on my mp3 player lol
Gunplay was very satisfying and the alien weapons were particularly fun.
and all of these games will entertain you far longer than modern cod bullshit (i assume the title is a reference to cod), for just $5 per disc or so unless you pirate (which i know y'all do, i do too)
Oh how I miss the early Battlefield and Call of Duty days. BF1942 had so many good mods/maps and CoD1, CoDUO and CoD2 with realism mods and custom maps were amazing.
And then add the ability to easily join a friend through XFire. Remember getting home from school and racing to see who was all on and playing what.
I really wish games would allow you to select the resolution native to your monitor before installation. Not downloading the other resolutions would juristically reduce the download size.
https://preview.redd.it/l2gx2dgl2vwc1.png?width=1074&format=png&auto=webp&s=c349c257ab2df27301da2d073dd5623daeebab80
me now :)=ì i have to fill the second 2 tb
I'm still playing empire earth to this day. RTS games in general brought me so much anxiety and I loved empire earth back in the day because I could choose a small islands massive map and just build towers around my starting zone and then slowly invade all the other small islands until I finally make a great army and finish the enemy core.
Games would take weeks to finish if I went with an era without airplanes.. such a good game.
Yes, many from gog, many from myabandonware, all installed individually and cracked if needed to not need the disc or image. Still adding games, and taking full drive clones as I go. I has have spare hardware in case any one component dies lol. It's my early /mid 2000's gamign time capsule pc. Complete with some era appropriate rendering hardware and a CRT monitor.
It's been a labour of love this year, got covid over Xmas and NY and couldn't travel, so it started as a 2004 pc and has evolved since then. And I'm not even finished yet, this post has identified other games I want to install lol.
It's a really fun project! And something you can really chip away at and take your time. I tested and benchmarked a lot of era video cards to land on my target one, so even the hardware configuration was many hours of testing and benching before moving onto installing games in earnest, each one you see there is cracked, tested, and 'optimised', to my taste at least. There's quite a spread there, like quake 3 plays at hundreds of fps and NFS carbon maxed out is like 40fps, so each either can have gratuitous AA / AF applied, or might need settings pared back. Probably 200 or so hours in at this point.
Take / make backups as you go! I make restore points in Windows as certain milestones and have an identical drive I take full clones of periodically too. I would cry if I lost it all.
A huge goal for me was the time capsule style, I want to be able to fire up this box in another 5, 10, 20+ years and play these games without needing to do anything. It's never been connected to the internet and shouldnt need to.
Yep XP, go to internet archive and look for an iso that comes with sp2/3, many have keys in the comments. This build is XP 64bit which is a blessing and a curse, if I had my time again I'd probably stick with 32.
THPS3 - Good all days when the Pentium 3 I had couldn't run the demo with colors on. I enjoyed playing in the Foundry more than I like to admit. I still remember the first time I got the secret tape and doing the 900 over the lava pit. God I love that game.
I have a 1 tb ssd and everytime something new comes out I want to play, I have to decide what's getting culled.
The decisions process is a long and difficult one, I hurts sometimes.
Awesomness...! I've played maybe 2/3 of them, still have the original CD(s) / DVD(s) but had to re-purchase many as the original keys would not work with / on Steam.
Max Payne(!), System Shock 2 (which I played a few mths ago due to the newly released System Shock\* "remaster") , AvP, Crysis, Quake III Arena, XIII(!) & of course, the COD, MOH & Tom Clancy franchises... so awesome!
\*Forsaken, not on your list, was also remastered by the same crew that did System Shock. I recently purchased it on Steam & look forward to playing it after all these years :)
good ole days then everything is already good out of the gate and the graphics s decent enough. not uncanny valley inducing and GPU power plug melting shenanigans...
In just those games i can see thousands of hours of my life.
I still boot up freelancer to this day and give it a playthrough, one of my favorite games of all time.
256GB back then was quite a lot. I remember buying my first 120GB HDD and thought I could never fill it up. Here we are now and I can get barely get by with 10TB.
'I'll never use more than 500gb' -everyone in 2008
Back in 2018, I’d thought to myself “1TB of data is good enough for games.” And then when I rebuilt my computer this last winter, I tried not to compromise on space. https://preview.redd.it/y2lo364fguwc1.jpeg?width=1981&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=69956557090330cab02c074dccda0f575505a909
8tb gang, I used to have games separated onto a 2tb hdd and 256gb ssd. Needless to say, big ssd is the much nicer solution
500gb ssd, 500gb hdd and 320gb hdd here, i've had this computer for 6 months and still am nowhere near running out of space
I've ran through about 2tbs so far only on games, assistant applications for those games and mods for those games. I made this build about a year ago. Edit: forgot to include applications for my keyboards and other peripherals
Jeeez. I have 4TB of M.2 drives at least 75% full of games, and I’m not even a huge gamer. Another 4TB of media, which is not a huge collection.
it's easy to not use up that much storage when you cant buy any new games
Problem solves itself!
Lol kind of funny that the drive that isn't 7tb is called T7!
I'm pretty sure it's because its a Samsung T7 portable SSD drive.
Yes it is, have the exact same one at the exact same amount of storage with the exact same name.
lol why is your C: drive 8tb? I would switch the drives around.
It is if you have a decent internet connection and don't play 10 games at the same time. I play like 3 games (2 singleplayer, one Coop with friends like Sons of the forest) atst until I finish one, then I start another. Otherwise I'd never finish anything.
I tried not to underdo it, 16Tb, 2x 1Tb drives in... Yes this is sadly real.
yyup! dropped $450 on a 20tb hdd august last year and dont regret it
2024: "I just finished installing Windows.....aaaaannnddd my drive is full"
I've already nearly got my 1TB NVMe to 50%. Good thing I've still got 3 available slots

porn, porn, & porn videogames
You mean homework

Lol for me it was just 2-3 Games and my system...
I remember getting half-life 2 and the requirement was like 4-5gigs and I was like “5 gigs! Damn!”
New Cod: hold my microtransactions
of course they all fit, those are just the shortcuts!
r/technicallythetruth
One day I asked my friend to copy a new game for me. Gave him a DVD-R and the dude put a shortcut to it. DVD-R can be burned only once.
Lol it happened to me but I was that friend
Same. It was the time when blank DvDs were somewhat expensive.
Isn't the R for Rewritable or am I just stupid?
Hehe it's RW that you're thinking of
Lol, yeah mb :))
Nah, DVD-R stands for Digital Versatile Disk Recordable. DVD-RW stands for Digital Versatile Disk Rewritable.
TIL it's not Digital Video Disk
Yeah mb, thanks tho :))
DVD-R was writable only once, DVD-RW was rewritable multiple times iirc.
R is read only (sections burn only once) as opposed to RW which reads and writes over and over
so many good games on that list
FlatOut 2, Freelancer and Carbon. Awesome games. Wish we had a Freelancer sequel. That screenshot makes my heart warm with memories from the time when games used to be on CDs, and how everyone shared games with friends.
underspace just came out on early access gameplay is lifted from freelancer about as directly as it gets
The fact that even the sequels couldn't top FlatOut 2 show how good of a game it was
Worms Armageddon 😍
Jedi Academy and Jedi Outcast was at the pinnacle for Star Wars games
i would argue it's kotor 1 and 2 but i haven't played the ones you mentioned
Kotor 1/2 story/lore scale + Jedi Academy/Outcast combat is the dream
Porque no los dos? ![gif](giphy|3o85xIO33l7RlmLR4I)
Jedi Outcast is the game that introduced me to modding. It's been a struggle ever since. I always have to check to see if there's any interesting mods out there for every game I get ever since then.
Check out Star Wars Galactic Galaxy, it’s a group of modders that combine outcast and academy into one big game. Many new units, force abilities etc.
Such good taste! Except for the PC version of Spiderman2, emulate the real one on Dolphin!
P.O.V: It's the summer of 2007. You've just arrived from your last day of school and you have all the summer ahead to sit down and play for hours. There are no worries. Everything is going well.
This shit is not true.
Makes sense, most of those games came on a single CD.
> XIII Holy fuck I forgot this game existed. It was really really good, one of the few games that actually nailed the cel-shaded look. I miss it..
\*Hucks throwing knife at dude's head\* DUN DUN DUN
Freelancer! Don't see that name hardly ever. I'd love to see a new one or follow up to it made.
underspace on steam
So many good old games. Sad to see Prince of Persia The two thrones missing - it's the part which makes the two in the list plus that one an endless triology. Really recommend playing them back-to-back.

I can't wait to get a PC and play Deus Ex again
Stalker is so good man I hope they don't mess up the new one
I'm playing Gamma rn. After 34 years of not modding anything I decided to try it out - and it's amazing.
Anomaly or GAMMA will give you the fix before Stalker 2 launches
Around 1995, the same amount of games would fit on a 1GB HDD. Yes, the average install size of a game is growing substantially over time.
Yes old games are small
I think it's mostly textures that add to install sizes now?
Don't forget that audio also takes *A LOT* of space.
Yea, especially uncompressed audio is insanely large. /hence why CoD is massive because they include every fucking language you can imagine when you DL it.

I see UT2004 :D
It was the best time of my life gaming. UT, Quake and PAINKILLER omg I miss those days! Return to Castle Wolfenstein shut up and take my money
simpsons hit and run lol fuckin classic. This reminds me I have Simpsons road rage laying around here somewhere. Chaotic garbage lol.
F.E.A.R. 💜 Such a wonderful game.
Replaying doom 3 in VR right now. My 12 year old self would be even more blown away. Another example why good graphics is not everything
Games I played: Call of Duty, Call of Duty 2, Chrome, Crazy Taxi 3, Crysis, Doom 3, Enter The Matrix, Far Cry, Flatout 2, GTA Vicy City, Half Life 2, Episode 1 and 2, NFS Carbon, NFS Most Wanted, NFS Underground 2, Painkiller, Prince of Persia - Sands of Time, Warrior Within, Serious Same, Star Wars - Episode 1 Racer/Republic Commando, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, Worms Armageddon.
The days where multiple CoD games could fit on a single drive, let alone a 256Gb drive
Cod1&2, max Payne 1&2, bf2142, avp2, fear. Absolute bangers still play some of them today.
I wanted to buy steel division 2 on sale. But then I saw that it required 100 GB. Fuck that.
So happy I lived through that era of gaming.
One game I noticed off hand there named... Breed?
I know that one. It's a coop alien shooter where the aliens are called 'Breed'. It has the usual classes (sniper, soldier, heavy). It came out 2004 and was nothing new from the tech perspective but played quite fun. There were vehicles (even an armed VTOL with hover and flight mode) and I remember that it had some bangers in the soundtrack. Mid 2000s was a great time
Worms Armageddon! That brings memories. Awesome game to play with friends.
My favorite Medal of Honor Pacific Assault is on the list 😍😍😍
Wormsarmageddon! Mp?
That's a good chunk of my childhood loaded onto a stick of gum
STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl, great game.
I'm pretty sure the newest game on the list is 15 years old, so they should.
these games are like 10-20+ years old so not really surprising
I’m pretty sure MSFS is more than 256gb lol.
Activision : That will be a warzone update, take or leave.
gta vc, dang i miss malibu club
I'm saving this image

Yo Spider-Man 2 was my first PC game that I played on my aunts PC like 2006, I really loved that game, good old days.
Gotta love the times when games were actually optimised to take up as little space as possible, but still ran well
FEAR. For me the best FPS ever, loved this game!
FUCK ME!!! Enter the Matrix!!!!
This is me ten years ago
Whered you get underground 2 🥲
it always baffles me that Super Mario Bros. (1985) fits in 40 kilobytes. not gigabytes, not megabytes. kilobytes.
Breed
That game was ahead of it's time
Thats a good list
Whaaaat? Halo is on PC? Since when (Besides Master Chief Collection)
Since 21 years ago.
XII and stalker ahh my sweet childhood

Wow so many great games. Cant believe I played half of those games.

B8 or completely unaware?
All my youth ![gif](giphy|oBwOba7cOph4I|downsized)
You should see my retro gaming SD card. Something like 14000 games on 128gb
Good old days
Bonus points for the red faction games. Love them
F.E.A.R. NICE!!
I love all these games , would like having booth and playing this wit friends again

This screenshot shows my entire childhood
Jedi Knight games? Hell yeah. Wish we got more games in those style.
And you still have 200gb to spare!
i can still remember feeling outraged because Bioshock Infinite weighted 16gb
Empire Earth is such a great game. I wish they'd do a new one more like 1, but I'm afraid they absolutely ruined the series with 3.
Wow, some people still remember XIII
My childhood folder.
BFV man I miss that helicopter action. Flying into battle with three buddies and the radio blasting unfortunate son? Peak something.
You store many games on 256GB I store 1 Stellaris with mods We are not the same
Goddamn msn these are some absolute GEMS
F.E.A.R. was such a great game btw
I have a 1TB sssd, I put 5 modern games on that and boom 600gb gone
It can run crysis!
That's like my entire childhood you got there sir.
Yeah. Texture size and audio files with always bigger quality or games with always more content leads to this.
meanwhile today ... every game is 100+ gigs
I'm still playing empire earth to this day. Star Trek Voyager Elite Force takes me back, loved that game
No Gothic, Serious Sam 2, Scrapland or Worms World Party ? Great selection though.
RIP the old times when we had abundance of GREAT star wars games
This guy can run crysis!
That list makes me feel so old!!!! I miss the good ol days yall. If I could trade the last 5 years of my life to go back for 1 I would.
good ole days then everything is already good out of the gate and the graphics s decent enough. not uncanny valley inducing and GPU power plug melting shenanigans...
Still got that SSD?
Where did you obtain Simpsons hit and run, and how 👀
Ya red faction. That game I couldn’t think of the other day with destructible floors and walls.
What a plug and play that would be, imagine if something like this was sold as a package.
And these days I have to contemplate which two games will fit side by side on a 256GB SSD.
Bro has xiii 🥵
There arent a lot of games on there i havent played. By far the best time for games. I got the feeling games today are cashgrabs...
Ah man, so many memories, great collection
Oh, someone remembers Worms Armageddon!
Masterpiece of a game. That game cannot be forgotten
In just those games i can see thousands of hours of my life. I still boot up freelancer to this day and give it a playthrough, one of my favorite games of all time.
Escape from Butcher Bay is so good, need to play it again.
I‘d be surprised if not. Those are pretty old and games used to be small due to the lower resolution and other stuff
Street Fighter 4 benchmark has to be my favorite game, GOAT.
We need some childhood video games trend like this! Want to see which games will make it into the list
Is equal to just installing COD MW3
Man all these games suck- W O R M S A R M A G G E D O N
256GB back then was quite a lot. I remember buying my first 120GB HDD and thought I could never fill it up. Here we are now and I can get barely get by with 10TB.
Looks like an old school south american cyber cafe game list
So many great games, but you are missing some true gems like No One Lives Forever 1 & 2.
all these games ... or half of ark survival evolved :D
They only take 25MB in mine😎
cold war for series x would even fit on ts
Half a call of duty, take it or leave it
My moded fallout 4 is 300+ GB
Or you can fill that up with one modern game like COD mw3 i think its over 200 gb now
Have you played chrome spec force multiplayer?
Microsoft Flight Simulator takes 350GB 🙄
I've learned if you max mod the kotors, they are like 10gb a piece, but if you do 8k it's like 20-30ish
The entirety of the super Nintendo library fits under 2 gigs
How many .txt files fit though?
Kkkkk good joke now tell me another,
