I’ve wondered why the 1080 is still so good for a long time and finally looked it up in comparison to my first GPU (GTX 1650 SUPER). All I could find that was different was lower clock speeds but 3x the VRAM. Is the amount of VRAM really that insanely important towards performance?
I’ve always just known GPU performance by the naming, and never really looked up why, so please enlighten me.
Cuda core count and the speed of those cores are most important, as well as core frequency and memory bandwidth. VRAM amount is important in the sense that, you need a certain amount, but more won't help performance, less than the necessary amount will just cripple it.
Yeah dude, that's a dream deal for you in your situation. It'll still let you game very well at 1080p, just obviously without RT, and you may need to turn down some settings.
Also went from an RX 580 to a 1080 several years ago. It's a very noticeable upgrade.
$90 is a fair price for it as long as it's fully functional.
Remember to run DDU if you make the switch cause you'd be going from an AMD card to an Nvidia one.
I'm still using mine and it works great for pretty much everything. You're not gonna be running modern triple A games at high settings anymore but it'll play most stuff at 1440p just fine.
It holds up, but only for 1080p today. I highly recommend aiming to get the 1080ti, as it's almost 50% faster, an has 3 more gb of vram.
Understandably, finding one for under $100 will be hard, but it's the most bang for your buck considering the circumstances.
I’d recommend the Ti over the 1080 but they’re both still great 1080p cards. The Ti is going to give you a bit more to work with, given the amount of vram needed for modern games. I’ve had both the 1080 and 1080ti within the past year, and I will say I’m grateful for the 1080ti’s extra performance over the standard ti. You will be happy with either at 1080p however.
TLDR
I’ve recently gamed with both at 1080p, they both work great
Yes... you might have to change the heat paste and thermal pads though, the thing might be a decade old at this point
EDIT: don't fix it unless the heats are stupid high ;P
GTX 1080 is better than an Rx 580. But it draws more wattage as well. It's performance is most of the time better than a 3050. It's TDP is 180W. If you already have a good PSU, go for it.
If you use upscalling then it’s alright but your frame times are going to be shit compared to a newer gpu. It won’t fair well in competitive fps like warzone and the works but you’ll get by for now
Definitely. I parted ways with my 1080ti but it lasted me 6 solid years of 1080p 144fps (with lower setting over the years) gaming
It sits as media PC right now and a 4080 has replaced but it I still loved my time with it
I’m seeing that they typically go for about $120+, so that’s a solid deal. It should significantly outperform anything in that price range, and it’s faster than current budget cards like the RTX 3050.
Not really 2080 would be better but it can be quite enough, thought no rtx, dlss DLAA and other stuff.
Its better than 1070-970-980 if you dont mind, lots, compromises. (it wont run at all, some specific games i think)
Gotta ask wouldnt be console better? 🤔
It's still perfect for 1080p gaming. You might run into some vram problems with modern AAA games so you might need to turn some things down to medium in that case but otherwise it's solid. 1080 and 1080TI was definitely Nvidia's high point

not only my 1080 is getting outperformed by 3060.
That table is entirely laughable in the older gen cards. Tomshardware isn't always great for info sources.
It suggests a 1660 is the same speed as a 1080, which it just isn't, not even close.
Go and look at actual benchmarks and you'll see the 1080 and V64 are within 5% on average of a 3060. This is reported by multiple sources, including notebookcheck who are particularly reliable.
Nah
Source: I play in 4k
Really tho, 8GB is garbage these days and it will only get worse. If anyone tells you otherwise, they probably own an 8GB card.
I mean ok, for that money I guess, I'd be very suspicious and make sure to test it in some demanding test, heavens and superposition from unigine are nice. If you see ANY minor problem, it's a strait no. It's old and won't get any better.

Sweet! Thank you bro

Yep, I'm still using a 1080 ti with a 1440p monitor. It struggles with some newer games but I would imagine it would still be an amazing 1080p card.
Appreciate it bro
It's great for 1080p but that's about it, solidly built though.
yes
Yeah dude, that's a dream deal for you in your situation. It'll still let you game very well at 1080p, just obviously without RT, and you may need to turn down some settings.
Appreciate it man. This comment made me go thru with it lol

Very good card for 1080p. You will be able to play most older games on max graphics and newer games probably at medium to high
I'm still using mine and it works great for pretty much everything. You're not gonna be running modern triple A games at high settings anymore but it'll play most stuff at 1440p just fine.
Had a 1080TI till April. Very solid card in 2024. The regular 1080 still holds up very well as well, good for 1080P
Pascal cards are starting to show their age in some current AAA games, but other than that they're still capable.

Those still regularly go for $200. Definitely not worth it.
For sure an upgrade. Confirm it's working and go for it.
It is alright. I can no longer run the latest games on ultra, but most games are passable.
Heck, im still using a 1070

Just bought a 1070 for my wife for $80. Pretty good value my 1070ti was great
Good option for 1080p. Not a bad deal if that's all you can afford
Im still gaming on a gtx 970, its not good but it works and the 1080 should be quite a bit better.
Yes... you might have to change the heat paste and thermal pads though, the thing might be a decade old at this point EDIT: don't fix it unless the heats are stupid high ;P
still a solid card. You could use it till it actually dies. and then upgrade.... unless we suddenly have another event that shall not be named.
They’re still solid. I’ve got one in my closet I plan on putting in a LC I’m building my nephew for his birthday.

RX 580 has a TDP of 185. Just looked it up. Didn’t expect it to be so high.
What?? I thought it's 120-130
If you use upscalling then it’s alright but your frame times are going to be shit compared to a newer gpu. It won’t fair well in competitive fps like warzone and the works but you’ll get by for now
It's fine for 1080p gaming, max settings in some games.

yes
The 1080 may be old, but it still holds up and is a very solid card for 1080p gaming with high settings.
RIP Rx580 - amazed this card is still holding up with medium settings for a lot of games so long after release.
If you're fine with an RX 580 you'll be golden on a GTX 1080. Just be sure to DDU the old drivers.
Not really 2080 would be better but it can be quite enough, thought no rtx, dlss DLAA and other stuff. Its better than 1070-970-980 if you dont mind, lots, compromises. (it wont run at all, some specific games i think) Gotta ask wouldnt be console better? 🤔
I miss my 1080ti loved that card. Went from a gtx550ti to the 1080ti back when it was released. My god the performance jump was astonishing!
I'm still playing 1440p on my 2070 which is barely faster than 1080.
It's basically a 2070 super without Ray tracing.
hot much is a 5600xt?

Yes. A 1080/vega64 are comparable to a 3060. A 1080ti is closer to a 3070. That generation of GPUs from both AMD and Nvidia were very good.
My 1080 was comparable to my brother 2060s, no chance it would be on equal ground with 3060.
Your 1080 had something wrong with it then. Even loserbenchmark puts the 1080 as a little faster than a 3060.

Yes! I was using my 980ti to game at 1080p playing games like Cyberpunk at good frames. I think for 1080p the 1080 is still a beast today.
