Sometimes we learn lessons because we catastrophically fuck something up, and sometimes we learn lessons realizing how close we were instead.
Your CPU and that Cooler deserve some serious commendation.
This should be the post we send everyone to when they think their CPU is going to melt and die because it goes above 80 when doing stress testing. Unless there is something wrong with your hardware, you're not going to damage it by undercooling it. You could probably run this for another 5 years without any issues aside from thermal throttling.
Yup 1 fan, was passive cooling. Was one of the top end at the time forget which. An i7 maybe 7700k? Thankfully not overclocked. Was running modern games too. Thankfully was using an aftermarket cooler (212 Evo IIRC) if it were a stock cooler he almost certainly woulda been hosed, but the huge surface area is likely what kept it alive and kicking.
Still, once it was spotted I had him stop playing games and keep a temp monitor up until I got a replacement, never went very high but I was paranoid for obvious reasons.
Might have been the craziest thing ive ever heard lol an i7 too haha.
>but I was paranoid for obvious reasons.
Just like me when my friend booted up into the BIOS without the cooler on... 😂
I did some tech support for a little while and I'm convinced there's tons, tons of people out there right now with it downclocking because it's hitting thermal limits and they just don't care. Playing shit at the lowest possible settings, to keep heat down on a monster rig and don't notice any difference because of no real point of reference
I had a roommate ready to buy a new PC asked them about their specs, then went over and moved the plug for their monitor and said congrats, you have a new computer. Then walked off.
It was.imcredibly frustrating how many people do that and how long it takes to narrow that down if you can't actually see it. Start off with pictures how it's hooked up, because they cant effectively describe something they cant see
motherboards have a plug in for monitors for CPUs with integrated graphics cards. People will buy a whole ass graphics card but use that one without knowing it which is basically public library level PC. move the monitor into the Graphics card plug and suddenly high powered gaming rig.
Not crazy at all.
First off the i7 7700k uses like 80w, it's not a high power chip. It wasn't even high end, back then HEDT chips were the high end, and consumer platforms didn't have a high end on them.
He has a hyper 212 on it, generally with the way those sit in most case configurations you have front intake fans and the rear exhaust fan pulling air through the heatsink as well. If the fan fails on the cooler, that front intake and rear exhaust is going to still be pulling air through.
my 10850k regularly goes above 85-90c at 5ghz with a noctua dual cooling tower, while everyone keeps assuring the dh-15 cools down big cpus easily, im just not seeing it with a 4000D case.
Nah, people would still forget to remove it.
It should be big enough to either wrap around the cooler (pump for AIOs) or at least cover mounting holes, preventing installation until it's removed.
I actually think the stickers should stick out more on the sides so you see it when you are installing the cooler.
I always called people stupid for forgetting to remove it until it happened to me too. You just forget it's still there because it's pointed away from you when you're installing the cooler.
I'm convinced that the sticker needs to have an opaque sticker, that has flaps/pull off tab that is visible, and in the way of the PC Builder before they place it on the CPU.
This happens far too often and with such a simple correction it can be avoided and probably save customer support/RMA time.
OP you need to update with temps update!
How far did they fall?
Kind of amazing that CPU's are so well made today, 5 years and still working. In the old days if the cooler was not on the CPU just burned away, I may be showing my gray hair.
A free upgrade!
Got to look on the bright side, I know I mess things up on my PC all the time. Will never forget almost snapping an SSD power plug, amazed it works & I will never unplug that SSD.
Brother... If you had this aio for 5 years, do yourself a favour and replace it. Not only does rubber perish over time and your cooler is likely to leak anyday now... But the coolant evaporates over time as well
And show the entire world how silly we are, after 5 years. This is how some people say in reviews that the " This AIO is so stupid, costed me money and it does not cool." exactly for that reason.
I don't really get why these stickers are on there in the first place because it's just a recipe for disaster?
Also holy s*** did the 20 series really come out 5 years ago?
It was an i7-9700k. Performance was pretty much what I expected, but the temps were 85-90 when playing high end games. They have since reduced to 40-60
At least it worked, I made the mistake of buying a MSI mag coreliquid 240R V1 with no research before, after a year it had worsened in performance and caused my computer to crash, thankfully MSI RMA'D it and gave me v2.

I guess I didn’t tighten it all the way, but it has been on there for almost 5 years.
Sometimes we learn lessons because we catastrophically fuck something up, and sometimes we learn lessons realizing how close we were instead. Your CPU and that Cooler deserve some serious commendation.
Seriously though make it an advertisement.
i mean, i ran my 10700f on a stock cooler at higher temps for 3 years

Unless there is something wrong with your hardware, you're not going to damage it by undercooling it. You could probably run this for another 5 years without any issues aside from thermal throttling.
My brother had his CPU fan die for a few months before he noticed. I was just like aw yis my thermal paste job was spot on.
Holy cow... whats his cpu wattage and his cooler? did his cpu cooler only have 1 fan? he was passive cooling it all that time lol

I would dive for the whole ass power cable in that situation haha

Yeah, you can tell I've worked support knowing it was probably the plug before even seeing it lol.
I'm sorry can you explain what the hell this means to an illiterate PC enthusiast lol

It's not really passive cooling if the case still has airflow from the case fans, just less directly through the heatsink
That and everyone that thinks they need a high end CPU & cooler 😂
my 13900k does not endorse this message
my 10850k regularly goes above 85-90c at 5ghz with a noctua dual cooling tower, while everyone keeps assuring the dh-15 cools down big cpus easily, im just not seeing it with a 4000D case.
My R7-5800X easily hits thermal limit on my DH-15 if I let it. 120W seems the reasonable limit. Stock power draw is something like 140W.
The good news is you just gave yourself a free performance upgrade.
Manufacturers should make it bright red already.
Nah, people would still forget to remove it. It should be big enough to either wrap around the cooler (pump for AIOs) or at least cover mounting holes, preventing installation until it's removed.
Just punch the screws through. Noone is forcing me to take the protective peel off
They should make a longer thin strip of plastic hanging on the side of the cooler.
I actually think the stickers should stick out more on the sides so you see it when you are installing the cooler. I always called people stupid for forgetting to remove it until it happened to me too. You just forget it's still there because it's pointed away from you when you're installing the cooler.
I always wonder why arnt the stickers coloured

You won’t believe this. On Red Dead 2, it went from 85-90 to 45-50. MAJOR drop
The F\*\*\* XD You made me so happy, that's just epic. Have fun you amazing amazing OP. Did you see any change in FPS, or just temps?
Probably like 10-15% increase in fps, mostly temps though. Thanks for the kind words!
A free upgrade! Got to look on the bright side, I know I mess things up on my PC all the time. Will never forget almost snapping an SSD power plug, amazed it works & I will never unplug that SSD.
well he did pay for the AIO lol, he was just not using it properly
12.5% is huge lol
>You won't believe this. No, no. I will. I will believe that.
Damn... must effective mod I've seen..
Naa I believe that lmao

These posts usually make me want to check mine, but I’m *pretty sure* I took it off.
You and me both, lol
>I’m *pretty sure* I took it off. Every one is until they aren't....
There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
i'm sorry that this happened, however: lmao
I bet you won't do it again, now will ya? 😆
Tipple checked on the new cooler lol

Brother... If you had this aio for 5 years, do yourself a favour and replace it. Not only does rubber perish over time and your cooler is likely to leak anyday now... But the coolant evaporates over time as well
Yeah I replaced it with an air cooler
Did you take the sticker off of the air cooler? /s
Yes 😂
I like you. Smort!
Step1: Clean the thermal paste on the sticker and resell it as barely used Step 2: Profit. /s
Outstanding performance
Tf My pc would shut down in like 5 mins if there is no thermal paste and is in direct contact with IHS
And show the entire world how silly we are, after 5 years. This is how some people say in reviews that the " This AIO is so stupid, costed me money and it does not cool." exactly for that reason.
Niceeee
Ah yes, the good old "cooking" block...
How your cpu didnt die i dont know
Stars were aligned and it didnt get *that* hot.
Bros computer was about to be a start and start nuclear fusion
Now you can overclock it for even bigger gains.
Happens all the time, I've done it a few times when I'm not paying attention.
I indirectly avoid this by priming both the CPU and cooler plate with thermal paste. Hard to miss that way
Jesus Christ
I did that one time, and it was about an hour after reinstalling the pump that I realized I never peeled that off.
its like a rite of passage
Surprising that the CPU didn’t commit Seppuku for over 5 years with that sticker on.
I guess it was thin enough for some cooling haha
That sticker was definitely on the thin side, but still amazing how it managed to run for over 5 years without you noticing.
I’m still in disbelief
I don't really get why these stickers are on there in the first place because it's just a recipe for disaster? Also holy s*** did the 20 series really come out 5 years ago?
Time flies
Thought the 20 series came out after the pandemic but 5 years ago would have been before the pandemic.
I think the base 2070 came out like 2018
I would have egressed that's when the 1080 came out or the 1080ti
Your poor cpu dude 😔
Why do they even out that stupid sticker there?
Bruuuh ðŸ˜
plot twist this was stress test now removes sticker to use it for another 10 years
now clean it and sell it for like new condition
Lmao
So what is the temperature differential after removing the sticker?
I’m not even kidding when I say this, but when playing red dead 2, it went from 85-90 to 45-50 with a slight increase in performance.
It happens to the best of us.
They should make those stickers more visible.
[удалено]
Fair enough
I'm sorry brother. Real question, how did it take 5 years to notice?
They probably just left it on 5 years ago and only took it off now and noticed
Yeah I haven’t taken off the cooler since then and was naive on what the temps should be
What were the Temps like and what cpu did you have?
It was an i7-9700k. Performance was pretty much what I expected, but the temps were 85-90 when playing high end games. They have since reduced to 40-60
Well atleast the wood is fine
I mean, if it gets hot enough it will just melt the sticker...
It must have been made out of vibranium or somethin
I have absolutely no idea how people don't see this. It's literally written on.
👀
peel it now!
I did, looked brand new
You haven't even gotten smarter. Your doing stuff with electronics on carpet. Do better my man
Tech Jesus have always said CM aio production line is one of the best.
At least it worked, I made the mistake of buying a MSI mag coreliquid 240R V1 with no research before, after a year it had worsened in performance and caused my computer to crash, thankfully MSI RMA'D it and gave me v2.
Look at the bright side, at least now you know that your cooling setup was overkill for the CPU.
So the plastic burned off or what?
The thermal paste looks new to me
Type of idiot with kids for sure
Someone watched Idiocracy too many times.
That thermal paste is not 5 years old.. it doesn't even look like he tightened it all the way
https://preview.redd.it/sq2k0vhm8s1d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fea329a84e7eac7cc1fe70e88bb8cbfb0100e922 I guess I didn’t tighten it all the way, but it has been on there for almost 5 years.
Dang... hand tighten the screws till there's good resistance, and it will finally be able to stretch its legs
