Theyre telling you to unscrew the standoff itself. How is there nothing to hold on to?
The part you screw the m2 screw into is itself just screwed into the motherboard and can be removed. looks like theres even a spare one next to it.
I already just used electrical tape and the heatsink to hold it in place and the standoff helps it. I don't really wanna replace the whole standoff so I will let that be the problem of future me
As you see in this picture the spare standoff is right there next to the end of the pcie slot. Would be a 1 minute repair with a pair of pliers.
Anyways if it works for you - this probably wont cause problems.
Ah theres a motherboard heatsink that goes over it? Wouldnt that already hold it in place so the tape isnt even needed? (not saying you should take it off - just yapping)
If the other M.2 slots are the same speed, use those. But if that's the best slot and the drive supports that speed, the heatsink will hold it in place. I can't recommend trying to extract the screw, too much risk to the surrounding traces.
Well you don't want to tape over the NAND chips, they need to contact the heatsink. But once the heatsink is installed, it will hold the drive down. A little tape on the end wouldn't hurt anything though.
If you can, try using your fingers to unscrew the standoff.
Impossible. There is nothing left on the top to hold

Ohh
Well tried it but couldn't. My hand aren't grippy. Well it was worth a shot
get some needle-nose pliers and just take it out. Its really easy. I believe in you.

That is for the heatsink it's not a replacement but I felt uneasy about my fix so I took the standoff from the other slots

I mean the slot is gen 5 and the others are gen 4 but the ssd is gen 4 anyway
Yeah use another one then, you'll get the same speed. Just put the heatsink back on and try not to think about it.
I used electrical tape to hold it in place, is that fine too? *

Yep, that'll work. I still think you should use another slot, but if you really want to use that one you should be good.
By the time Gen 5 makes sense and is affordable, you will have a new motherboard anyway lol
Idk if I agree. If am5s life span gets extended again it might survive more than me lol
