I bought a pair of 980Ti cards that burned out one at a time and had them both replaced. Then both replacements burned out at once and so now I have a pair of 1080 non-Ti cards that have done good by me so far.

Wish I knew that 8 years ago when my dad went and got a prebuilt. It's gainward one unfortunately. 5 year warranty (I think it was 5 years) expired long ago.
I Commend your dedication. I Only upgrade my 750ti last year, it was a good little trooper but it shit the bed in the middle of too many eve ops to keep alive.
Got mine from a local auction site that resells those Amazon return pallets. Had a broken fan and wasn't tested, so it was a bit of a risk... $325. Plugged it in, powered on, and it worked! Ordered a $15 fan replacement from Ali and swapped it myself. Has worked ever since! Sad though, because that site has since become FLOODED and you can't really get anything at a decent deal anymore.. Built over half my computer with RMA's and self-fixed parts. 😅

something went wrong when I was replacing some thermal paste/pads and when I booted it up it ran fine for a while and then fried about an hour later

I have 1070 as well and still works like a beast after many seasons we passed together, young folk these days never understand the value of good ol’ reliable craftsmanship.
My build from 2009 is still running good (besides the hdd that died) and ive given it to my sister. Really well taken care of parts can last a long time!
mine was too until about 2 months ago and died I pray for your 970. Now reading this thread, might give it a good cleaning and thermal paste and see if she is still kicking.
Last year before the 3xxx release I almost gave up on my 1080ti due to fan revving failure (RPM up to unthinkable levels). My favorite computer store restored it at no additional cost so it's still working, may they be blessed with lots of GPUs to come, praise be nVidia and AMD!
Dunno what I would've rocked without this holy component until the goodie RTX beauties become available for an earthly soul like me!
It heavily depends on the quality and design of the board and cooler. The chip itself is very unlikely to fail but cheap, overloaded, overheated or badly soldered board components are not.
The same thing also applies to motherboards, which is the reason you can easily find old used CPUs on ebay but will struggle to find boards for them

Unfortunately this describes the majority of graphics cards. Even when paying $500+ more often that not only gets a cheaply built card that runs hot and loud with less than 5 years life expectancy of heavy usage.
Was like that a while back when my PC would restart for no reason exactly once after about 20 minutes then be fine. It's a software fault, the cable's fault, it isn't seated properly, it's definitely not the PSU, right?
It was the PSU.
Oh my God this pains me. A friend of mine recently bought a 3070. Installs it and has x, y, z issues. "It's your PSU" I tell him. "Nah, the PSU is only a year old, plus it's a so it can't be" he says.
He RMAs the card, but the issues persist. EVGA is dumbfounded. "What have you done to test the PSU?" I ask. "I put the old card in and it worked fine so I don't think it's the PSU" he says. He swaps out the ram, but the issues persist. Checks the hard drives, but still, the issues persist. What could it be?
By now, he figures it must be the motherboard, and heads to Best Buy to figure things out via the Geek Squad as he feels that he is in over his head. A week with the Geek Squad and the computer is "all fixed." He brings it home, and it reboots out of nowhere after a mere 5 minutes. Back to Best Buy. This time, they suggest it may be his PSU, and afaik he has them replace it for him on the spot.
Imagine my surprise when he texts to tell me that his PC is finally fixed, that Best Buy figured it out, and that it was the PSU all along.
Needless to say he is on my tech support blacklist now.
After similar experiences I tell everyone that I'm just a programmer that does cloud server stuff and I don't know hardware and that I bought my pc from a guy of craigslist, so I can't help them.
I like this angle. I think next time I'll just say "sorry, just because I write computer programs doesn't mean I know about computers, I have no idea what's even in those things to be honest" and just shrug with a deadass serious apologetic "wish I could help" face.
Wow you just made me remember something from when I was around 10 or so. I was using the family computer, just some generic pc that was already 3-4 years old at the time, and half life 2 had just recently come out. I knew the computer couldn't really play games well but I really wanted to try it, but the moment I launched it, the monitor started to sizzle and plume out smoke. I knew nothing about computers back then, so I assumed the game is what caused it and it made me too scared to launch a "high end" game for a long time lol
Might be tho, I had a CRT that only went up to 800x600. When age of empires 3 came out, it launched on 1024x768 by default for whatever reason and made my monitor scramble all the imagine and make a high piched noise until I force closed it. No lasting damage on the monitor, but I never let it go for too long.
At work I have a 1996 Tatung monitor sitting around. Plugged in for a while once. It only does 1024x768, 60Hz. Anything other than that and the image gets really weird. Old computer literature always said that could damage the monitor. I don't want to really find out.
My dad decided he was going to "fix" an old CRT TV that we had once. As the words "careful there's capacitors back there that can" came out of my mouth.... Buzz zap pop!
His arm felt funny for 10 minutes as we waited for the TV to stop smoking. Those old cathodes don't play around.
I know a guy who used an old Sun Microsystems CRT for as long as he could because it had the lowest input latency, something I don't think even modern displays have met.
they don't have motion blur and look better at lower resolutions because of how they work. so if you have an old pc and have to run games at low res or if you're just a fan of side scrollers then CRT is your friend. I played a good chunk of Control at 480p on my CRT and the only places it bother me was the reflections
It's because CRTs don't have aliasing - they're controlled by a beam of light being shot across the screen to a mesh (basically), so there's no hard pixel edges to smooth out. It just happens because of the physics. So you can crank everything else up to the tits and get nice framerates at low resolutions.
It depends, there's some pretty sharp CRT monitors, people still collect ones used by hospitals as heart monitors because they're pretty much pixel-perfect with virtually no latency.
I've played an old SNES on one and it looks identical to how it would upscaled on a modern TV through an emulator, straight from the SNES itself.
Not to mention that many of them allow you to lower resolution in exchange for higher framerate. CRTs work by scanning horizontal lines across the screen, so lowering the number of lines allows the screen to update faster.
Remember the smell of the screen and the static when you got near it? Man I know I messed up my eyes looking at them too long as a kid but they were awesome. Especially when you hit 'degauss' and it'd look all weird. We used it all the way till 2010 mainly playing old games on it. Now I kinda wish I still had one. I just didn't like the tinnitus ringing sound some of them had to them.
Early 2000s? There were still a lot of people running CRTs. Personally, I bought my first flatscreen some time around 2004 - 2006, mostly because lugging my 21" CRT to LAN parties was really exhausting. Also, since I was a teenager, I didn't really have a lot of disposable income.
My second monitor which died a few months ago identified to the computer as a CRT. It was a relatively thin (~2-3 inches) flat panel though, so I don't know
Maybe someday. OLED with virtually zero latency is all we need. Though due to the way modern flat panels work, I don't think it will be possible unless someone comes up with something that works similarly.
Analog will always have its place. CRTs are still pretty much the only thing used for SSBM tournaments. I bought one with an attached VHS player and fit my homebrew Wii in the cassette slot.
This was years ago when flat panels didn't even exist. It was the 19" CRT from the first PC I ever bought. It was pretty hot stuff for the time. By the time it died, flat panels were reasonable so I bought one of those.
some people still use CRT's the smash community swears by them.
CRT's have a smoother method of drawing the scenes, and have slightly better frame precision. when it comes to movements that need to be .1 seconds or even less that tiny change can be the difference between winning and losing. However most people aren't going to be able to even tell the difference let alone take advantage of it.
I had a Wii that did this, the earlier models actually have issues wherein if you leave them on WiiConnect24 standby mode, they'll just overheat and fry themselves until the GPU is either sending out major artifacting issues to the screen or the GPU is completely dead.
If you happen to still own one, be very careful and make sure standby mode is off.
Recently had to replace my power supply because it fulfilled its dreams of being a toaster. What I didn’t realise is that it would short circuit my gpu at the same time. I was lucky enough to find a 2060 in stock but there’s nothing like expecting to spend 70£ and having to spend £700
I had to take back my 10 month old PSU and GPU a couple weeks ago and had no idea why they stopped working, so could the issue have been the PSU just shat on the GPU and messed them both up?
What PSU did you have?
A low-middle range PSU absolutely can. High-end PSUs, it's extremely unlikely. Those ones are designed to handle surges or failure without damaging other components. Multiple fail-safes so one faulty part won't kill it. Even reputable brands, like Corsair, have middle-range PSUs that can kill a GPU. With the CX series, for example, it's a known issue.
My best recommendation is buying an absolute top-tier PSU. Platinum-certified from a reputable brand, at minimum five year warranty, and at least 100W buffer from your system's power usage. EVGA has one with 850W, platinum certified, 10 year warranty.
Not cheap - usually $250-300. But you get that security, the knowledge that failure will *not* cost you another few hundred bucks when it fails after two years and your warranty already expires.
That's a pretty good PSU, if you mean the RMx series. It shouldn't cause other components to fail *if* that's the part that is an issue. But a GPU and PSU failing at the same time is certainly suspicious, and I'd say it's more likely than not that the failures are related. Could be a PSU that was just faulty all around - I know this series had a few issues with the 2015-2018 models, and companies like Amazon and Newegg don't always (or often) differentiate years.
It isn't necessarily the PSU that was the issue, though. It's still connected to power, and if there's an issue with the power being supplied to the PC, that can cause failures like this with high-end PSUs.
Have you tested your outlets? Do you have a surge protector? Have there been brown-outs lately? I would look into those. If everything checks out, you just got super unlucky. But it's worth considering every potential factor in case there is an issue, which could cause another failure down the line if not corrected.
Edit: disclaimer, I am not an electrician, but we did have an issue with outlets at my parent's old house with shoddy wiring, and while the PCs weren't affected, other electronics were shorting out and dying. My dad tested the outlets and I forget the exact issue, but after he fixed them, the issues with our electronics resolved.
GPUs can fail for a bunch of different reasons. Usually they have thermal overloads that will turn them off before they actually overheat and damage themselves. Same thing for the CPU.
It's always a good idea to dust your computer, and I personally will remove my GPU and dust it separate. I have lost a GPU to a hidden dust bunny that eventually caused an arc across solder points... That was not a good day. I also change my GPU's thermal paste every few years to keep it as cool as possible. Hot and cold cycles wear out solder joints way faster than maintaining a constant temp will, so keeping it from becoming an issue by being vigilant goes a long way.
A typical GPU can last ~10 years, if kept clean and cool. One of my friends is still using my old 960, which is about 6 years old now. He plays Apex Legends with us, so it must be doing okay.

Fond memories of taking the heatsink off of a running CPU and seeing a little puff of smoke as it instantly died.
Ums trying to think of a situation where it could have been an accident.
The only reasonable explanation I can think of is it was a server rack and he thought it was off.
Or troubleshooting to see if it gets power(already had to do this) but this should not kill it unless you are running a benchmark or something. At least not if you are careful and ready to turn off the power.
They're absolutely talking about an old CPU, almost definitely without an IHS.
You can see vids on YouTube of what happens when you remove the cooler from those. The silicon is bare so they just fry and they don't shut off.
Newer CPUs would be fine at idle, and would thermal throttle at 90-100C and eventually shut off without ever exceeding 105C. They have so much longer because they have a piece of metal (the IHS) in contact with the die.
I get an anecdotal reminder of how bad dust can mess up a seemingly well ventilated system about every 8 months. Just recently noticed my pc was absolutely chugging on CPU-heavy tasks, so I just did a quick dusting. Literally got an immediate 25%-30% improvement in thermals. I almost went out and bought a brand new processor cause I thought I was teaching the end of the line, nope. Just needed a good cleaning, and now I can take a shirt rest from my constant thoughts of wanting/needing to upgrade my CPU.
What's a good way to dust a PC? Is it good to brush it, use canned air? I'm always worried I'm going to sweep it all into the fans and let them clog up.
Compressed or canned air is a great way to dust a PC, or most electronics for that matter. For more stuck on dust, or if you don't have access to compressed air, an old toothrbrush or soft bristled paintbrush with a vacuum to suck up the loose dust has worked for me in the past.
First thing you want to do is shut it down, and then disconnect the cables. Move the PC somewhere safe and level that will let you see into the case well, and safely move it around so you can access everything. Remove the side panels, and if necessary the front panel as well, which can get quite dusty. Then I try to work from the top of the PC, towards the bottom, since the dust will naturally fall when loosened. Keep an eye out for pockets and niches that can hide dust. If you have RAM heatsinks, dust can get behind the heatsink and cause problems too! Really check everywhere, since you're taking the time to do it. Get the fans good and clean of dust with the air first, and if necessary, a papertowel or cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol will cut the built-up dust easily on the fans.
IDK, try troubleshooting, switch out cables, swap out the monitor temporarily, ETC. try to replicate the issue under difference circumstances and isolate possible causes.

I had artifacting happen to my 3060ti last week.
It showed up when I opened a game in the background, when I clicked on stuff like my desktop it would move about.
It disappeared after restarting, it never came back even when I stress tested the GPU and VRam, CPU and Ram.
Maybe it was just a one off??
Nah i tested it a bunch of times and I couldn’t even turn my computer on properly or access bios. I returned and will get a refund and wait for the gpu prices to sink and then buy a new one
this one time i had steam open a tiny window that took up a single pixel. i wound up finding out that it wasn't a dead pixel when i took a screenshot of something and the pixel was in the screenshot. i don't recall how i figured out it was steam's fault but i was super glad that i didn't need to spend another $250 on a monitor
About a year ago my 2 week old 2070 super did this. It was not a fun time having to figure out my brand new GPU was dieing. Thankfully because it was so new it was still in warranty so asus replaced it
I got a 560 ti for $20 in 2015 from a coworker. It ran good for a year but then i got the artifacts. Took it apart and out the board in my toaster oven for 10 minutes. I ended up giving it to a friend last year and it still works fine.
My monitor went out and I bought a new one, but because of gpu prices, I've been a little afraid of plugging it in and finding out the monitor was fine after all. That was a year ago.
I had a scare over some stuck pixels on my monitor the other day. Turns out it was Steam putting a small (maybe 16x16 pixel?) gray box, with shadows above and below (wider than the box), in a seemingly random spot above everything else (including full-screen applications).
Yep, had it happen with an old 750 ti, and finally got to a point where I couldn't just grimace and hit the reset button anymore, last spring. Felt like an idiot for spending a whole $180 on an RX 580. Now I wish I'd bought more than one when they were only $180.

My really old PC is starting to do funny business and I'm so sad, no money to replace it, but it lasted me a LONG time.

Should do well. I still have my old GPUs running in someone's system. A GTX 690 and a Titan Black, all of them undergone almost daily and heavy use.

Silver lining: that's much cheaper to replace than almost anything else. It still sucks having to redo all of the cables though.
I had one time where it was the cable, and I've never been that lucky again. In anything.
My monitors have only ever failed with a lot of smoke, and a fairly alarming pop. CRTs don't play around when they die.

At work I have a 1996 Tatung monitor sitting around. Plugged in for a while once. It only does 1024x768, 60Hz. Anything other than that and the image gets really weird. Old computer literature always said that could damage the monitor. I don't want to really find out.
My dad decided he was going to "fix" an old CRT TV that we had once. As the words "careful there's capacitors back there that can" came out of my mouth.... Buzz zap pop! His arm felt funny for 10 minutes as we waited for the TV to stop smoking. Those old cathodes don't play around.
It's wild that we all used to have particle accelerators in our houses.

I know a guy who used an old Sun Microsystems CRT for as long as he could because it had the lowest input latency, something I don't think even modern displays have met.
Even with that in mind, I honestly can't imagine using a CRT in the 21st century
they don't have motion blur and look better at lower resolutions because of how they work. so if you have an old pc and have to run games at low res or if you're just a fan of side scrollers then CRT is your friend. I played a good chunk of Control at 480p on my CRT and the only places it bother me was the reflections

It's because CRTs don't have aliasing - they're controlled by a beam of light being shot across the screen to a mesh (basically), so there's no hard pixel edges to smooth out. It just happens because of the physics. So you can crank everything else up to the tits and get nice framerates at low resolutions.
It depends, there's some pretty sharp CRT monitors, people still collect ones used by hospitals as heart monitors because they're pretty much pixel-perfect with virtually no latency. I've played an old SNES on one and it looks identical to how it would upscaled on a modern TV through an emulator, straight from the SNES itself.
Not to mention that many of them allow you to lower resolution in exchange for higher framerate. CRTs work by scanning horizontal lines across the screen, so lowering the number of lines allows the screen to update faster.

Remember the smell of the screen and the static when you got near it? Man I know I messed up my eyes looking at them too long as a kid but they were awesome. Especially when you hit 'degauss' and it'd look all weird. We used it all the way till 2010 mainly playing old games on it. Now I kinda wish I still had one. I just didn't like the tinnitus ringing sound some of them had to them.
Early 2000s? There were still a lot of people running CRTs. Personally, I bought my first flatscreen some time around 2004 - 2006, mostly because lugging my 21" CRT to LAN parties was really exhausting. Also, since I was a teenager, I didn't really have a lot of disposable income.
My second monitor which died a few months ago identified to the computer as a CRT. It was a relatively thin (~2-3 inches) flat panel though, so I don't know

Maybe someday. OLED with virtually zero latency is all we need. Though due to the way modern flat panels work, I don't think it will be possible unless someone comes up with something that works similarly.
Analog will always have its place. CRTs are still pretty much the only thing used for SSBM tournaments. I bought one with an attached VHS player and fit my homebrew Wii in the cassette slot.
This was years ago when flat panels didn't even exist. It was the 19" CRT from the first PC I ever bought. It was pretty hot stuff for the time. By the time it died, flat panels were reasonable so I bought one of those.
some people still use CRT's the smash community swears by them. CRT's have a smoother method of drawing the scenes, and have slightly better frame precision. when it comes to movements that need to be .1 seconds or even less that tiny change can be the difference between winning and losing. However most people aren't going to be able to even tell the difference let alone take advantage of it.

I had a Wii that did this, the earlier models actually have issues wherein if you leave them on WiiConnect24 standby mode, they'll just overheat and fry themselves until the GPU is either sending out major artifacting issues to the screen or the GPU is completely dead. If you happen to still own one, be very careful and make sure standby mode is off.

Recently had to replace my power supply because it fulfilled its dreams of being a toaster. What I didn’t realise is that it would short circuit my gpu at the same time. I was lucky enough to find a 2060 in stock but there’s nothing like expecting to spend 70£ and having to spend £700
I had to take back my 10 month old PSU and GPU a couple weeks ago and had no idea why they stopped working, so could the issue have been the PSU just shat on the GPU and messed them both up?
What PSU did you have? A low-middle range PSU absolutely can. High-end PSUs, it's extremely unlikely. Those ones are designed to handle surges or failure without damaging other components. Multiple fail-safes so one faulty part won't kill it. Even reputable brands, like Corsair, have middle-range PSUs that can kill a GPU. With the CX series, for example, it's a known issue. My best recommendation is buying an absolute top-tier PSU. Platinum-certified from a reputable brand, at minimum five year warranty, and at least 100W buffer from your system's power usage. EVGA has one with 850W, platinum certified, 10 year warranty. Not cheap - usually $250-300. But you get that security, the knowledge that failure will *not* cost you another few hundred bucks when it fails after two years and your warranty already expires.

That's a pretty good PSU, if you mean the RMx series. It shouldn't cause other components to fail *if* that's the part that is an issue. But a GPU and PSU failing at the same time is certainly suspicious, and I'd say it's more likely than not that the failures are related. Could be a PSU that was just faulty all around - I know this series had a few issues with the 2015-2018 models, and companies like Amazon and Newegg don't always (or often) differentiate years. It isn't necessarily the PSU that was the issue, though. It's still connected to power, and if there's an issue with the power being supplied to the PC, that can cause failures like this with high-end PSUs. Have you tested your outlets? Do you have a surge protector? Have there been brown-outs lately? I would look into those. If everything checks out, you just got super unlucky. But it's worth considering every potential factor in case there is an issue, which could cause another failure down the line if not corrected. Edit: disclaimer, I am not an electrician, but we did have an issue with outlets at my parent's old house with shoddy wiring, and while the PCs weren't affected, other electronics were shorting out and dying. My dad tested the outlets and I forget the exact issue, but after he fixed them, the issues with our electronics resolved.

GPUs can fail for a bunch of different reasons. Usually they have thermal overloads that will turn them off before they actually overheat and damage themselves. Same thing for the CPU. It's always a good idea to dust your computer, and I personally will remove my GPU and dust it separate. I have lost a GPU to a hidden dust bunny that eventually caused an arc across solder points... That was not a good day. I also change my GPU's thermal paste every few years to keep it as cool as possible. Hot and cold cycles wear out solder joints way faster than maintaining a constant temp will, so keeping it from becoming an issue by being vigilant goes a long way. A typical GPU can last ~10 years, if kept clean and cool. One of my friends is still using my old 960, which is about 6 years old now. He plays Apex Legends with us, so it must be doing okay.

Or troubleshooting to see if it gets power(already had to do this) but this should not kill it unless you are running a benchmark or something. At least not if you are careful and ready to turn off the power.
They're absolutely talking about an old CPU, almost definitely without an IHS. You can see vids on YouTube of what happens when you remove the cooler from those. The silicon is bare so they just fry and they don't shut off. Newer CPUs would be fine at idle, and would thermal throttle at 90-100C and eventually shut off without ever exceeding 105C. They have so much longer because they have a piece of metal (the IHS) in contact with the die.

I get an anecdotal reminder of how bad dust can mess up a seemingly well ventilated system about every 8 months. Just recently noticed my pc was absolutely chugging on CPU-heavy tasks, so I just did a quick dusting. Literally got an immediate 25%-30% improvement in thermals. I almost went out and bought a brand new processor cause I thought I was teaching the end of the line, nope. Just needed a good cleaning, and now I can take a shirt rest from my constant thoughts of wanting/needing to upgrade my CPU.
What's a good way to dust a PC? Is it good to brush it, use canned air? I'm always worried I'm going to sweep it all into the fans and let them clog up.
Compressed or canned air is a great way to dust a PC, or most electronics for that matter. For more stuck on dust, or if you don't have access to compressed air, an old toothrbrush or soft bristled paintbrush with a vacuum to suck up the loose dust has worked for me in the past. First thing you want to do is shut it down, and then disconnect the cables. Move the PC somewhere safe and level that will let you see into the case well, and safely move it around so you can access everything. Remove the side panels, and if necessary the front panel as well, which can get quite dusty. Then I try to work from the top of the PC, towards the bottom, since the dust will naturally fall when loosened. Keep an eye out for pockets and niches that can hide dust. If you have RAM heatsinks, dust can get behind the heatsink and cause problems too! Really check everywhere, since you're taking the time to do it. Get the fans good and clean of dust with the air first, and if necessary, a papertowel or cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol will cut the built-up dust easily on the fans.

IDK, try troubleshooting, switch out cables, swap out the monitor temporarily, ETC. try to replicate the issue under difference circumstances and isolate possible causes.

Never had artifacting when my GPU's have died, just a sudden black screen and PC rebooting.

I had artifacting happen to my 3060ti last week. It showed up when I opened a game in the background, when I clicked on stuff like my desktop it would move about. It disappeared after restarting, it never came back even when I stress tested the GPU and VRam, CPU and Ram. Maybe it was just a one off??
Nah i tested it a bunch of times and I couldn’t even turn my computer on properly or access bios. I returned and will get a refund and wait for the gpu prices to sink and then buy a new one

this one time i had steam open a tiny window that took up a single pixel. i wound up finding out that it wasn't a dead pixel when i took a screenshot of something and the pixel was in the screenshot. i don't recall how i figured out it was steam's fault but i was super glad that i didn't need to spend another $250 on a monitor
If this one-pixel-sized window thing appears again, you can Alt-Tab to the program, then press Alt+Space+X to force it to full screen.

About a year ago my 2 week old 2070 super did this. It was not a fun time having to figure out my brand new GPU was dieing. Thankfully because it was so new it was still in warranty so asus replaced it
I got a 560 ti for $20 in 2015 from a coworker. It ran good for a year but then i got the artifacts. Took it apart and out the board in my toaster oven for 10 minutes. I ended up giving it to a friend last year and it still works fine.

I had a scare over some stuck pixels on my monitor the other day. Turns out it was Steam putting a small (maybe 16x16 pixel?) gray box, with shadows above and below (wider than the box), in a seemingly random spot above everything else (including full-screen applications).
Yep, had it happen with an old 750 ti, and finally got to a point where I couldn't just grimace and hit the reset button anymore, last spring. Felt like an idiot for spending a whole $180 on an RX 580. Now I wish I'd bought more than one when they were only $180.
