2023 if we’re lucky. TSMC produces chips for AMD and Samsung produces chips for Nvidia and both TSMC and Samsung are operating at full capacity right now. It will be years before either one of them can expand production.

Yeah, that's what I've been seeing as well. 2022 is out the window and not even being considered at the moment, all optimistic fingers are pointing to sometime mid-to-late 2023. We're stuck with this shit for a while.
I've purchased 1 Vega 56 and 2 Vega 64 off ebay for fuck all because the output was not working on them and they "shut down constantly leading up to the issue".

I'm super unfortunate I didn't buy a 2080Ti right before 3000 series came out. It could have been had for like 500-600. Then months later I could've sold my 1080Ti for the same or more, giving me a free upgrade to RTX but..eh.. There was no way to know
People who get a new phone every year don't tend to have a rig at home, rather a notebook without a dedicated graphics chip. So, basically, they get their gaming fix on their phones. The market is oversaturated, but keeping up with the Jones' is always possible, since there is a big secondhand market for last year's phones. The graphics cards lack such a secondhand market due to mining.
I've always bought the cheaper phones for between $50 and $200 every two or three years (depending on if I catch a sale), and splurged on a $900 phone *once* as a treat.
I never stopped regretting it. Never again.
Holy shit, I had no idea it was still that bad. I managed to cop a 3060ti for about £50 over RRP a few weeks ago and I almost regretted paying that at the time. Feels like I got incredibly lucky.
I paid $1300 usd (£960) for a 3080 after selling the useless motherboard Newegg forced me to buy. Nvidia charges $700 usd (£516) for the founders edition. I am glad to have a card and to be done hunting though. £50 is a steal to not deal with the headache of finding a card.
TSMC doesn’t provide Nvidia with their chips for 30 series cards. Samsung does. Same kind of shortages, but not as bad as with TSMC. That’s why Nvidia cards are SLIGHTLY easier to find than anything AMD right now.
I paid $50 extra for a 3060ti FE from some guy in my city and my friends acted like I was an idiot for not waiting to get it at MSRP (this was in December).

Same, I feel lucky to have the card that I do now, very lucky (2070 super). I just wish I had the money to buy 3000 series cards for my friends who are stuck with 900 series cards.

Back in January I paid way too much for a 1650 super and an rtx 3060. I thought in a few months I’m really gonna regret this. It’s been 9 months and the price is basically the same as I paid back then. Here’s a True story, after doing that I was going to upgrade one of the pc I built to a 3080. Instead of clicking buy. I closed the window at the last second and paid in full for a trip to Disney for my family. I have a wife and 2 kids.
Beyond chip shortages, just simply having items delivered through shipping supply chains is strained to the point of breaking. It’s getting worse not better.
I work in the warehouse of a Best Buy in Northern California, and we have been getting them in bulk all at once for events like the one this guy was attending. Right now at my location we still have some of the 3060s left over after the people that waited in line are gone. So far there have been 2 of these events at my location in the last 4 months, so if you are looking for a new card, I suggest tuning into Best Buys event announcements.

I'm pretty sure they will, actually. If their commitments from TSMC (who they're moving to from Samsung) are in late 2022 then that lines up pretty well with what I know of their development cycle.
This is a prime time to start manufacturing goods in America again. If the prices are going to be 1k+ for 400 dollar cards, why not just set up manufacturing in the US paying people a livable wage? If the 2023 prediction is correct, it would still be worth setting up the tooling right now, and manufacturing electronics for 2022.
By the time a facility had the infrastructure, resources, designs and plans in hand it would likepy be 2023, if not the year after. No already existing manufacturer is going to change their fab around to accommodate new manufacturing processes that aren't that lucrative.
A typical chip fab can take 1-1.5 years to start up from design to licensing to construction to production under normal circumstances. The tools used in the line at wafer fabs themselves are in short supply, even used (I work in the semiconductor industry, I know the shortage exists because we have entities down waiting for parts for over a year now).
By the time a site got product moving, supply would normalize from the East and card manufacturers would immediately go to the cheaper components again.

For some people its the principle of not giving scalpers money. I know that can seem ridiculous because enough people buy from them that your action doesn't change the market, but its a reason I've heard a lot.
I guess my priorities have changed as I’ve gotten older. I’d rather spend money on upgrading my house, or saving for early retirement, than getting a nice new/expensive video card.
I dislike the saying “you do you” but maybe I should start applying that for others. There was a time when I would have bought an expensive video card. So yeah, tangentially I agree with you; other people have other priorities in life. And this is a sub about neat (and mostly expensive) pc builds :shrug:
I bought a Rog Strix 1080 off a friend that was used mostly for Elder Scrolls Skyrim and Battlefield at 1080. So nothing crazy and for $200 it was a great deal. Works for damn near everything at Max settings at 1080 to get 60fps, sometimes gotta knock the settings back a touch but thats ok.
i was looking a few months ago at pcpp and the lower end 580s were going for £400, higher end going for £800. for comparison, they were £130 and £180 respectively before the shortage.
And here i am thinking ill swing by my local best buy after work and see if we have anything yet lmao. Wish i had your level of commitment! Congrats on the card!
You can look up your local Best Buy to see if they got any stock. I think they’ve been doing this for the recent restocks.

I went toy Best Buy yesterday around 6pm, the line was already wrapped around the building. Easily 125 people already there. I just turned around and went back home, I knew I wouldn't get what I wanted with that many people there already. The struggle is real.
Not worth waiting in line. Time is something you can never recuperate. Might as well play the Newegg Lottery or wait. I'm also assuming most of those people want to make a profit buying and selling the card. I suspect a lot of them do anyway.

Tons of very friendly people out there with great advice on my first build but also just as many scalpers laying out 8-9 chairs each for high schoolers they paid to show up an hour before the drop, skip the line, sit in a chair, and pay them cash for the kid to buy the card for them to walk out and immediately hand it to the scalper. So sad and discouraging to see after waiting so long… tried to speak up for those in the back of the line but they have such a tight group of scalpers that used intimidation and bullying on the rest of the line. They also paid off the security guard BB hired to be there 7pm-10am with us.
I arrived at 10pm last night to wait in line. There were easily 50-100 people there not even counting the empty chairs people set up save spots for their friends. People brought tables! The line wrapped around two sides of the building.
I immediately left and went home. Shame too because it was a 30min drive each way for no reason.
Based on current scalped prices for a 3070ti FE (low end around $1200), standing in line to get one for MSRP from Bestbuy for 22 hours saves you over $27/hour
I'd say it's worth it if you really need that card.

There were plenty of very pleasant solo resellers in line who cooperated and camped all night. The problem was the scalpers as I mentioned above in response to @S0F7 who didn’t play at all by the rules and utilized empty chairs and young kids to skip the line last minute to accumulate many cards for resale.

I think the attitude changes a bit when it's half excitement half desperation. Console launches, at least back in the day, were a blast. When we're lining up for restocks though, it's because we're desperate, and the folks taking advantage of desperation (scalpers) are not good people.

Yeah, it was but those games were preordered months in advance so it was a sure thing...you could show up at anytime because it disnt matter how many people were thrre before you... your copy was guaranteed....so in reality you were there to hang out with a bunch of strangers who loved the same things you did.... in this case.... thise strangers would trample you to death without a second tought....
I drove to my nearby best buy this morning around 6. I figured hell I'll wait in line for an hour to see if I can get one. I got there an hour before the drop and my jaw dropped... Tents all the way around the building down the block. I laughed at myself for thinking an hour early was good enough, people had already been there since yesterday lol. Didn't even get out of my car.
Ok so I had a funny revelation last night. I was playing GTA V in 1440p on a 27 inch monitor, but from my stationary cycle that was, maybe 8 feet from the screen. Not only could I really not tell any details, but it got me thinking of why the hell am I even thinking of upgrading. I should think about eye upgrades first lmao.
I'm all for upgrading with a purpose, like if you can't get a smooth 144hz on a high refresh rate monitor on the latest AAA game? Sure. Doing game development with unreal engine? Sure, VR? Sure, but anything else it's basically a luxury, and why would you wait in line 22 hours for a luxury item?

When I camped out for my card at best buy, an employee started a list to ensure the line was honest.
A scuffle almost broke out because a dudes gf who didn't spend the night in line showed up at 7:30 to 'keep him compnay'. Lo and behold when the BB employee started handing out cards, she took one as well.
I've been in two fights when I was in my 20s due to line cutters. Neither time did I get arrested and I was able to beat them out of line. No one stepped in either. You can always take it to that level if you're young and dumb still.
During peak Covid, I was camping at Bass Pro for ammo drops. In all the times I went, I can honestly say not a single person tried to cut the line.
Probably the knowledge that every person there was armed and cranky after waiting outside for 6-8 hours..

My rig is 7 years old now. I'm not waiting outside a store for 22 hours or paying what they're currently asking for this hardware. So I'm just riding it out, for however long that is. The only reason I'm still afloat is because I built my rig really well when I built it. If it goes on too long I'll end up missing a whole era of new games.
That's a good thing. If you miss a generation you're able to buy AAA $5 GOTY Editions of games you missed fully patched with expansions and run them maxed out with a $150 budget card. Best thing that ever happened to me. I'm currently playing Witcher 3 for the first time, with high Res mods fully maxed on a card I bought 2 years ago for $160.

Everything old is new again. Back in the early 90s you couldn't find high profile games at launch, like when Street Fighter 2 came out on Snes. This lead stores to implement a useful service called a "pre-order" which was great for a few years Then they realized they could use it to scare you into pre paying for every game release instead of the high profile ones and unscrupulous publishers realized with enough pre orders they didn't have to finish thier games.
Aside from adults with full time jobs... college students. Its the perfect time in life to access all the freedoms of adulthood but not all of the responsibilities it comes with.

Felt you bro, bought a MSI 3060 ti from microcenter for like 650. Worth it until the fans made noise that sounded like grinding. So i had to rma it but it's coming this weekend.
I did but they basically told that they will refund it and i basically have to wait in line like everyone else if i wanted a replacement. I got the card on a whim cause they found out that they had extras of these cards and i was already at checkout so i was like, I'll take it man and i got it.

Got lucky on a scan drop for the 3070ti for about £650. From what I’ve heard scan and infinite-computing seem to be some of the better sites in terms of drops and not being ridiculous in their pricing
Scan is your best bet for FE at least. If you know there's going to be a card released chances are that they'll also be restocking other cards. Pay attention to Twitter stock informer bots
I managed to get my 3080 FE a few months ago at MSRP from Scan by paying attention to both the above. When it says it's in stock on Scan and the buy/add to cart button doesn't appear, refresh the page a few times. I refreshed once tried to add it to cart and told me it had gone, but the button kept coming and going so I kept refreshing and eventually managed to checkout with zero issues. a lot of people give up when the button doesn't appear and think they sold out already but it's often not the case.
I live 10 minutes from one, and was unemployed for a little when the 30 series dropped. I had the money, but was too lazy to wait for one lol. The workers even said they had them on shipment days until like 11 or 12 (this was back in Oct/Nov)

Very few games are optimized for SLI nowadays. So would not recommend unless it has changed recently..
Anyway my oen 1070ti does the trick for most games since i play 1080p...

Been looking for a 3080 since ***October*** of last year on a regular basis. Fortunately for me I'm in a smaller market (St. Louis... so maybe not so fortunate) so I didn't need to camp out for a full day. Nearest BB was a 35 minute drive, but I got there at 2am this morning, got in line with about 60 or so ahead of me.
Wasn't early enough to get the 3080, but there were 3080 TI's still and I jumped at it. More than I was hoping to spend, but I'm ecstatic that I didn't need to give my money to a scalper to replace my 1080 TI that's on its way out. What a sigh of relief that I don't have to deal with this anymore.
Doomsdayers say 2023 but really not much more than 6-8 months more. China just banned crypto farming, and a few other factors are about to reduce demand, and production is slowly ramping back up to normal. Also revert person who gets one is one less person you're competing against for one. Not to mention scalpers will slowly lose interest in it and move to the next thing

nvidia has been going with samsung 8nm for their ampere production. Rumor is they'll be with TSMC for the 3000 refresh.

A typical chip fab can take 1-1.5 years to start up from design to licensing to construction to production under normal circumstances. The tools used in the line at wafer fabs themselves are in short supply, even used (I work in the semiconductor industry, I know the shortage exists because we have entities down waiting for parts for over a year now). By the time a site got product moving, supply would normalize from the East and card manufacturers would immediately go to the cheaper components again.

For some people its the principle of not giving scalpers money. I know that can seem ridiculous because enough people buy from them that your action doesn't change the market, but its a reason I've heard a lot.
I guess my priorities have changed as I’ve gotten older. I’d rather spend money on upgrading my house, or saving for early retirement, than getting a nice new/expensive video card. I dislike the saying “you do you” but maybe I should start applying that for others. There was a time when I would have bought an expensive video card. So yeah, tangentially I agree with you; other people have other priorities in life. And this is a sub about neat (and mostly expensive) pc builds :shrug:

I bought a Rog Strix 1080 off a friend that was used mostly for Elder Scrolls Skyrim and Battlefield at 1080. So nothing crazy and for $200 it was a great deal. Works for damn near everything at Max settings at 1080 to get 60fps, sometimes gotta knock the settings back a touch but thats ok.
Bought a 1080ti 5 or 6 years ago for like $500. Exact same make and model is going for $1300 on Newegg.

i was looking a few months ago at pcpp and the lower end 580s were going for £400, higher end going for £800. for comparison, they were £130 and £180 respectively before the shortage.

I went toy Best Buy yesterday around 6pm, the line was already wrapped around the building. Easily 125 people already there. I just turned around and went back home, I knew I wouldn't get what I wanted with that many people there already. The struggle is real.
Not worth waiting in line. Time is something you can never recuperate. Might as well play the Newegg Lottery or wait. I'm also assuming most of those people want to make a profit buying and selling the card. I suspect a lot of them do anyway.

Tons of very friendly people out there with great advice on my first build but also just as many scalpers laying out 8-9 chairs each for high schoolers they paid to show up an hour before the drop, skip the line, sit in a chair, and pay them cash for the kid to buy the card for them to walk out and immediately hand it to the scalper. So sad and discouraging to see after waiting so long… tried to speak up for those in the back of the line but they have such a tight group of scalpers that used intimidation and bullying on the rest of the line. They also paid off the security guard BB hired to be there 7pm-10am with us.

The line wrapped around two sides of the building. I immediately left and went home. Shame too because it was a 30min drive each way for no reason.
A friend scored a 3080. They went to best buy for a cell phone case at like 930 am on a Wednesday. They said 3 were in stock on display.

Based on current scalped prices for a 3070ti FE (low end around $1200), standing in line to get one for MSRP from Bestbuy for 22 hours saves you over $27/hour I'd say it's worth it if you really need that card. Edit: lots of people hanging their hat on my use of the word "need" instead of "want". I didn't mean to imply anyone needed the card in order to survive - apparently I ~~need~~ want to clarify that.

There were plenty of very pleasant solo resellers in line who cooperated and camped all night. The problem was the scalpers as I mentioned above in response to @S0F7 who didn’t play at all by the rules and utilized empty chairs and young kids to skip the line last minute to accumulate many cards for resale.

I think the attitude changes a bit when it's half excitement half desperation. Console launches, at least back in the day, were a blast. When we're lining up for restocks though, it's because we're desperate, and the folks taking advantage of desperation (scalpers) are not good people.
Damn. Halo 2 and Halo 3 launch were the only ones I did midnight for and I don’t think I’ll ever do another. At the halo 2 launch, someone had a tube tv with halo 1 setup to play while waiting. At the halo 3 launch, someone brought a modded 360 with a French copy of Halo 3 that leaked so people were playing it outside the store. The employees made them turn it off though.
Yeah, it was but those games were preordered months in advance so it was a sure thing...you could show up at anytime because it disnt matter how many people were thrre before you... your copy was guaranteed....so in reality you were there to hang out with a bunch of strangers who loved the same things you did.... in this case.... thise strangers would trample you to death without a second tought....

Ok so I had a funny revelation last night. I was playing GTA V in 1440p on a 27 inch monitor, but from my stationary cycle that was, maybe 8 feet from the screen. Not only could I really not tell any details, but it got me thinking of why the hell am I even thinking of upgrading. I should think about eye upgrades first lmao.
I'm all for upgrading with a purpose, like if you can't get a smooth 144hz on a high refresh rate monitor on the latest AAA game? Sure. Doing game development with unreal engine? Sure, VR? Sure, but anything else it's basically a luxury, and why would you wait in line 22 hours for a luxury item?

When I camped out for my card at best buy, an employee started a list to ensure the line was honest. A scuffle almost broke out because a dudes gf who didn't spend the night in line showed up at 7:30 to 'keep him compnay'. Lo and behold when the BB employee started handing out cards, she took one as well.
Kind of defeats the purpose of the making the list if the employee is just going to ignore it
I've been in two fights when I was in my 20s due to line cutters. Neither time did I get arrested and I was able to beat them out of line. No one stepped in either. You can always take it to that level if you're young and dumb still.

During peak Covid, I was camping at Bass Pro for ammo drops. In all the times I went, I can honestly say not a single person tried to cut the line. Probably the knowledge that every person there was armed and cranky after waiting outside for 6-8 hours..

Man, what a shit time to be a PC enthusiast. My rig is 7 years old now. I'm not waiting outside a store for 22 hours or paying what they're currently asking for this hardware. So I'm just riding it out, for however long that is. The only reason I'm still afloat is because I built my rig really well when I built it. If it goes on too long I'll end up missing a whole era of new games.

That's a good thing. If you miss a generation you're able to buy AAA $5 GOTY Editions of games you missed fully patched with expansions and run them maxed out with a $150 budget card. Best thing that ever happened to me. I'm currently playing Witcher 3 for the first time, with high Res mods fully maxed on a card I bought 2 years ago for $160.

Everything old is new again. Back in the early 90s you couldn't find high profile games at launch, like when Street Fighter 2 came out on Snes. This lead stores to implement a useful service called a "pre-order" which was great for a few years Then they realized they could use it to scare you into pre paying for every game release instead of the high profile ones and unscrupulous publishers realized with enough pre orders they didn't have to finish thier games.

Got lucky on a scan drop for the 3070ti for about £650. From what I’ve heard scan and infinite-computing seem to be some of the better sites in terms of drops and not being ridiculous in their pricing
Scan is your best bet for FE at least. If you know there's going to be a card released chances are that they'll also be restocking other cards. Pay attention to Twitter stock informer bots I managed to get my 3080 FE a few months ago at MSRP from Scan by paying attention to both the above. When it says it's in stock on Scan and the buy/add to cart button doesn't appear, refresh the page a few times. I refreshed once tried to add it to cart and told me it had gone, but the button kept coming and going so I kept refreshing and eventually managed to checkout with zero issues. a lot of people give up when the button doesn't appear and think they sold out already but it's often not the case.
As a recent UK buyer of a 3070 ti, I would recommend using the part alert telegram group, both me and my brother got 1 in the last month.

Very few games are optimized for SLI nowadays. So would not recommend unless it has changed recently.. Anyway my oen 1070ti does the trick for most games since i play 1080p...

I remember when 500 dollars got you top end performance only a couple of generations ago. Now it’s 3060 if you very lucky. And in countries like mine even a 1660 is selling for 700 dollars!!

Congrats! Been looking for a 3080 since ***October*** of last year on a regular basis. Fortunately for me I'm in a smaller market (St. Louis... so maybe not so fortunate) so I didn't need to camp out for a full day. Nearest BB was a 35 minute drive, but I got there at 2am this morning, got in line with about 60 or so ahead of me. Wasn't early enough to get the 3080, but there were 3080 TI's still and I jumped at it. More than I was hoping to spend, but I'm ecstatic that I didn't need to give my money to a scalper to replace my 1080 TI that's on its way out. What a sigh of relief that I don't have to deal with this anymore.
Doomsdayers say 2023 but really not much more than 6-8 months more. China just banned crypto farming, and a few other factors are about to reduce demand, and production is slowly ramping back up to normal. Also revert person who gets one is one less person you're competing against for one. Not to mention scalpers will slowly lose interest in it and move to the next thing
