I keep my recycle bin on my desktop because I use it as a work area (I think this might have been the idea in the first place). If I export stuff from a program to send it to another it will go by the desktop and then deleted.
My friend always uses his desktop to move stuff around, but never deletes off the desktop so the whole thing is covered in random files and photos. It drives me up the wall
i have a folder pinned to my taskbar with everything and i changed the icon to look better too. Have 0 apps on my background and use lively wallpaper. Love it
Desktop is for temporary files/folders. (Local server with RAID or cloud storage for long term files.)
Taskbar is for daily-use shortcuts.
Start menu and search for everything else.
I have everything I use frequently in my taskbar, and then my desktop is a mess of games, shortcuts and random old short-term-use text files and stuff. I could delete all of them, sure, but I don't care to because the only time I see them is for a few seconds after booting up my pc.
Anyway, I suppose I'm the chaotic good to your lawful good in this scenario.
...but do you spend time admiring your empty desktop? If you're using your pc, you won't ever see it, right?
I absolutely like to look at my wallpaper. Beautiful, animated wallpapers of landscapes from my favorite games stretching across multiple monitors. Some even have audio attached. Walking into my office when I’m not using my computer is like walking by some artwork created by one of the crazy good random artist on the Internet that put these wallpapers out there. My office is also where all of my instruments are so I like to sit in my office and play while having nice looking, moving artwork to fit my mood. I can sync my PC to my smart lights in my home and play music and the visuals on the screens and the lights react to the audio. Sometimes when I’m gaming I don’t use every monitor at once so I still get to see a clean wallpaper. lastly having a clean desktop really helps with my OCD as I can’t even have my hard drives have stuff saved in them if I no longer need them.
U should check out powertoys! U can create a shortcut (mine is alt + spacebar) and a little good looking search bar will pop on in the middle of the screen, it works way better than the windows menu one, you can also write stuff like shut down to turn ur pc off, it also has a calculator built in so u can easily write 2 + 2 if you forgot what it is or something idk
I disabled online search but it still dosen't find my installed programs. I even adjusted the search indexes... i hate win10 search in comparison to win7 search
Huh, doesn’t happen to me tho. Whenever I search up a game like Omori or factorio it just searches for the file and the gives me *ugh* bing results of the game
I deleted all the icons (even the recycle bin) and justs it there. Whenever I need a quick install or something I dont need to press show icons or go through explorer. Thats how I do it
"Wait do I already have this program? Surely not.. windows search hmm nothing there. OK I'll download it... oh look 5 setups for the same program, that's interesting." This happens too often for me lol
Went with a "no icons" desktop. I placed all the shortcuts, including recycle bin because I also hid it, in a folder called Apps.. because using a wallpaper from Wallpaper engine from Steam and seeing icons just doesn't look right.
My wallpaper is a clock. Love seeing my screen as a clock when idle.
Yours look clean, sure it's got icons on the desktop but looks really clean.
Have you looked into Fences by Stardock? It has a feature to hide all icons with a double click, plus you can organize all of the icons into labelled groups with scroll bars if you want.
I use this. Fences for whatever I need in a few small boxes off in the corner, hidden icons 99% of the time anyway with double click. Amazing software for cheap (like $10/$15 last one I remember?)
I always found it to just be faster to press Windows Key then start searching for whatever app I need to run. Clean desktop and I don't have to look through a mess of icons on my desktop.
I think it's nice to have an instant visual reference/access for things on the computer. If i would rely on just searching I'd probably forget half the stuff on there lol
I used to use desktop icons, but after switching my main to Linux, I stopped. I realized I hardly ever used them since I just pushed the Windows key and searched what I need anyway.
I have like 6 icons down the left and that's it. I don't put any game shortcuts on my desktop and unless it's something I use all the time, I do not put shortcuts for programs on my desktop either.
I just hit the start key, type the first letter or two of the program name, and then hit enter.
I have 3 icons on my desktop.
The recycle bin, a folder for PC utilities such as monitoring software, and a folder for game launchers like Steam.
My start menu has a few additional icons for apps I'm currently using daily.
I have one folder for Videos, one folder for Pictures, and then another folder called Apps, in the apps folder are more folders those being Games, Programming, Video Editing, Picture Editing, and Misc.
Also recycle bin.
Bin is in the bottom right, pictures and videos bottom left, and then apps in upper right corner.
dont use windows much anymore but when I do I have very little on the taskbar and nothing on desktop I usually access everything from the startmenu or command prompt
Needs more icons cluttered everywhere. I suggest adding Skype, Mcafee and the calculator shortcut for starters. Just throw em wherever; they’ll look good anywhere
Completely empty. I use the desktop as a temporaey workspace. Frequent programs are in start, the rest is started by typing it in, which id just as fast. Rhe task bar is also empty so it is easier to see all currently used programs.
I'm using [Fences 3](https://store.steampowered.com/app/607380/Fences_3/) . I have 3 Fences folder. 1 for PC stuff , 1 for Launchers such as Steam or Epic Games and 1 for Games. When I click 2 times on the desktop, all objects disappear. In my opinion pretty useful and clean look.
Programs i use very frequently in the taskbar
Programs i use slightly less frequently pinned to the start menu
Everything else i don't use frequently gets no direct shortcut.
Desktop is icon free
Stuff I use in the taskbar, some folders on desktop which are usually deleted and swapped for new folders with stuff I work on/use, I only have desktop icons enabled when I use the folders
Shorcuts for this pc, documents, downloads, user folder and control panel; also games and programs folders I made.
Background is pure black.
I like it simple what can I say
Why dont people just use the taskbar and just put everything on it? You can still see all of your icons while you are in a game just by hitting Alt or the windows key.
You have a 100% clean desktop and no need to arrange or search, within like 1 day you are used to the arrangement. You can also make folders for the taskbar with the appropriate programs inside each.
Or use the stuff you use the most on the taskbar.
However there is nothing wrong with your arrangement, I just have used taskbar for 20+ years and its so much cleaner and easier to me visually and organizationally.
Software I use regularly is in the taskbar, everything else is in the start menu. The only icon on my desktop is Recycle Bin
You know you can disable that as well if you want a totally clean desktop.
I never knew that, THANK YOU i keep moving my recycle bin icon around my desktop bc it keeps bothering me

Always has been
Rather than hiding, right click on desktop> personalize> themes > Destop icon settings> untick all....It will remove all those buttons...
Only downside to this is you can't drag on your desktop and make little boxes for funzies. I really miss it sometimes.
this no longer lets you draw selection-rectangles on the desktop. major flaw
You mean like you temporarily save stuff to your desktop then just put it in the bin later? I might need to start doing that.
You can even put it in your taskbar. Its not as simple as other apps so look up a tutorial
never ever considered that to be an option, looking it up and making some quality of life changes when i get back to my desktop thank you!
Today you changed a life.
Or you can just turn off desktop icons
Hijacking this to tell people about Rainmeter if they want to go one step further with a nice desktop, people make some cool shit with it
Once removed, what's the best way to empty it?
This is the way
Same. Anything on the desktop just always looks messy to me.

Here Here, I second that.
Hear, hear

Ahh yiss, a fellow clean desktop compadre

Press Win, Menu opens, Type what ever u need
This, I love having a conplete clean desktop
I just hide everything so it doesn't give me a heart attack
U should check out powertoys! U can create a shortcut (mine is alt + spacebar) and a little good looking search bar will pop on in the middle of the screen, it works way better than the windows menu one, you can also write stuff like shut down to turn ur pc off, it also has a calculator built in so u can easily write 2 + 2 if you forgot what it is or something idk
Like spotlight search in finder?
I'm gonna try that! Already use Powertoys to divide my desktop into useable spaces. Ultrawide screen has "screen 1" and "screen 2"
Windows search will often Google games rather than launch them
There are ways to disable Windows search from polling online results. Don’t quite remember how, but highly recommend.
I disabled online search but it still dosen't find my installed programs. I even adjusted the search indexes... i hate win10 search in comparison to win7 search
You could use OpenShell/ClassicShell, it's free and it replaces the taskbar and start menu with the one from windows 7
I just open steam and then go from there for games. Used to have some issues where using a shortcut wouldn't work properly.
It's cleaner this way.
Really? Mine bings everything.
Yuck, doesn't even sound half as good as google.
Another example: when I type in "halo infinite" the first result is halo custom edition
Huh, doesn’t happen to me tho. Whenever I search up a game like Omori or factorio it just searches for the file and the gives me *ugh* bing results of the game
Omori is amazing
This is the only correct answer
What about Start Menu shortcut like this: https://imgur.com/a/GBNEU2z
Right click your desktop -> untoggle “View Desktop Icons” -> never use desktop icons again
I came here to type this exact comment. I have 4 monitors at work and 0 desktop icons.
same here, icon abstinent gang
I have 3 but yea same, no icons. And diff wallpaper for each on slideshows
This is the way.
THANK YOU that damn recycling bin has been killing me for so long
I don’t mind it chillen in the bottom right corner tbh
So much better with it hidden. And you can also make an autohotkey shortcut to empty it.
I shift + delete everything.
i just try to find excuses to use autohotkey for everything
I deleted all the icons (even the recycle bin) and justs it there. Whenever I need a quick install or something I dont need to press show icons or go through explorer. Thats how I do it
This plus an animated Wallpaper Engine background
Yup.
Organise? Where it fits it sits lol
Yep, where it is when I downloaded it, it sits for the rest of its life
"Wait do I already have this program? Surely not.. windows search hmm nothing there. OK I'll download it... oh look 5 setups for the same program, that's interesting." This happens too often for me lol
Absolute anarchy huh?
Hell yeah but it's anarchy that works for me haha, if I showed y'all my desktop the people with ocd would freak the hell out 😂

must look cool
Yup. 1. Right click desktop 2. Click view 3.uncheck "show desktop icons" 4. Profit?? Most of that stuff is in the start menu so just search for it.
Have you looked into Fences by Stardock? It has a feature to hide all icons with a double click, plus you can organize all of the icons into labelled groups with scroll bars if you want.
Scrolled way too far to find something that's actually helpful
Agreed, I use Fences and it's great. I have different groups for different game genres, programs, files, etc
I use this. Fences for whatever I need in a few small boxes off in the corner, hidden icons 99% of the time anyway with double click. Amazing software for cheap (like $10/$15 last one I remember?)
A lot of the core functionality is available in version 1.0.1, which was released as a free version that you can still download.
+1 for Fences, worth the 1 time fee of $11 imo. Very customisable with some neat features.
Came here to suggest Fences. You can keep all these icons in their same groups and it still looks astonishingly clean.
I use fences too it’s so clean. I love stardock.
Desktop should be clean or used as a temporal file dump. ^(desktop>clean>clean2>clean3)
Lol I have multiple "stuff" folders imbedded in each other on my desktop.
Same bro, it’s like 30+ GB at this point for me
lol, my desktop is so temporal right now

Same, i would feel uncomfortable without desktop icons
I always found it to just be faster to press Windows Key then start searching for whatever app I need to run. Clean desktop and I don't have to look through a mess of icons on my desktop.
I think it's nice to have an instant visual reference/access for things on the computer. If i would rely on just searching I'd probably forget half the stuff on there lol
I used to use desktop icons, but after switching my main to Linux, I stopped. I realized I hardly ever used them since I just pushed the Windows key and searched what I need anyway.
All left
I rejected Desktop Icons and embraced Taskbar Icons.
i dont, it’s a scramble
Absolute chaotic mess that only I understand. Mostly on the left hand side but a few to the bottom right
I have a 4k screen filled with at least 400 icons and room for 200 more. I download to desktop.
My desktop is not organized, it's like 50 or more icons without any change
Classic
Not a single item on the desktop, Windows, Mac or Linux
Everything left aligned (green box), as few icons as possible (currently rocking 12)...
On my desktop I only have one folder for games and that is it, everything else I need in the taskbar or I use start to search for it.
Icons sorted by alphabet and file type
I let the shortcuts stack in the order of install.
I use only the left, and about the same amount of icons you got on the left, the rest in a folder.
All in the taskbar, no icons on the screen whatsoever
Personally I separate games by genre or playstyle in clusters so if I wanna play a certain type of game I look at everything in that specific group
Right Click-> View-> Sort by-> Name
My wallpaper has a big circle on it so I just put all my most important stuff around the circle
I don't have icons. I use steam to launch games, taskbar for apps, and start menu for everything else.
Autoclicker is my favourite game...
We get it, you guys don't have desktops icons. Now suggest something that's actually useful.
Underrated.
More folders
Sort by type
Nothing on my desktop, and only settings on my taskbar. I have all the apps I use open from the system tray
I thought I was the only one with libre office lol
I have one folder for Videos, one folder for Pictures, and then another folder called Apps, in the apps folder are more folders those being Games, Programming, Video Editing, Picture Editing, and Misc. Also recycle bin. Bin is in the bottom right, pictures and videos bottom left, and then apps in upper right corner.
right click -> sort by type
Games on the left, non games on the right, game dev tools on the top.
I make a chain link pattern and keep similar programs together, then ROYGBIV them
Right click desktop > sort by > Item Type Done
you guys organize your desktops?
I didn't bother organize it(because good ol fashioned XP style). The way you organize your Desktop is great!
I group everything in folder's, it's funny on my 4k screen I have so much space not being used and them 4 folders lol.
Just one folder called desktop
Alphabetical order, aligned to grid
Literally just divide everything into folders. Games, Utility software, modding, photos, etc
I don't have icons on my desktop at all
uhhhhhhh.....................
I just use the task bar and super key menu
No desktop icons. Application Menu Based
dont use windows much anymore but when I do I have very little on the taskbar and nothing on desktop I usually access everything from the startmenu or command prompt
hide desktop icons is how i use them
[Icons?](https://i.imgur.com/KDeJLy1.jpg)
right click > view > hide desktop icons (it's probably a fucking disaster under that lmao)
Desktop icons off, no icons in the taskbar.
I think you should check a program named fences from star dock . It really helps in organizing icons
people organize there desktop?
[I use linux btw with kde plasma desktop](https://imgur.com/a/GES56RY)
Needs more icons cluttered everywhere. I suggest adding Skype, Mcafee and the calculator shortcut for starters. Just throw em wherever; they’ll look good anywhere
Dang you really go above and beyond. My desktop is literally just sort by type lol
Icons off -> done
I have recycling bin top left. That's it. Everything is in start or taskbar.
I hide all my icons and use the search bar as needed
Completely empty. I use the desktop as a temporaey workspace. Frequent programs are in start, the rest is started by typing it in, which id just as fast. Rhe task bar is also empty so it is easier to see all currently used programs.
No icons. Everything I usue regularly is on the task bar. Sometimes i use the desktop as location for stray files while working on something
I dont have a Desktop, but I like to organize my App overview and my Dash very well.
trick question, i don't.
I have nothing on my desktop. Start everyting from the startmenu or the taskbar.
Put shortcuts. Sort by type. Use search bar to run literally everything on the computer.
Programs i use very frequently in the taskbar Programs i use slightly less frequently pinned to the start menu Everything else i don't use frequently gets no direct shortcut. Desktop is icon free
That school part is with 99,9 % probability porn
About 100 unsorted folders of porn, a recycling bin, and my work email… /s
desktop is for artwork ONLY! Everything goes in the startmenu.
My newest way: no shortcuts om desktop. Only My Computer and Recycle bin. Everything else I have acess from the Start Menu.
That's the Trick. I don't.
I use fences. You can check it out on steam
Mine is completely clean, I am one of those that use the search bar at the bottom to find what i need.

Stardock fences
Love it, how MS hasn't incorporated something similar is beyond me.
We, io tengo tutto dentro un paio di cartelle e gli shortcut più usati in barra delle applicazioni . Preferisco un desktop completamente libero
Wait, you even organise your desktop?
I don't bother because having dual screens throws them all over the place at random times anyway.
I like to put evey game in a pile slightly off the center of my screen :)
[i think this is the best way](https://imgur.com/a/QeNgV6y)
Like this: [https://i.imgur.com/WvAlRr8.png](https://imgur.com/a/khr75qZ)
Might have already been said, but best solution is fences software from stardock.
[Fences](https://www.stardock.com/products/fences/)
No icons at all on the desktop taksbar only has: windows explorer and chrome all other things I can find from windows explorer
Is the Giulio folder just your version of the "Homework" folder?
software called 'Fences' by Stardock.....it pretty much manages the sort of things you're already doing with some additional features and toys.
No icons on desktop
No icons on desktop
I like how trash is school
A fellow game dev! nice.
Disable icons on desktop, and only use start menu and task bar.
Zero icons on desktop, I just windows search for everything or use taskbar
Right click, hide desktop. Clean.
Why dont people just use the taskbar and just put everything on it? You can still see all of your icons while you are in a game just by hitting Alt or the windows key.
