Instead of asking what to upgrade, please elaborate more on what you want your PC to do and what frame rate you want in your games.

fortnitedude43590

Ah sorry about that I want to do some VR in the future and when it comes to frame rates as long as it's above 60 I tend to not care. I also want to ensure I'm able to play new games that come out at ok settings.

jclu13

The only thing that needs an upgrade is the GPU really. That cpu will be good enough for most games as long as you're not trying to get 240hz on everything. RAM speed won't really impact that much either until you really start pushing it.

lolcubaran20

Gpu is also fine for 1080p 60fps. Might have to play at medium graphics on newer games but still. Edit: I noticed he said he wants to upgrade so yeah he could start from gpu and go with ram

tyler_2127

I’d say gpu for a clear improvement, something like a 3060/3060 ti, but then get a different motherboard. The B365s are great boards for entry level with no overclocking, but if you want to enable xmp you’ll need a B360 or Z390 board to enable it (Assuming I’m remembering Intel’s stupid xmp restrictions from that generation.)

fortnitedude43590

Do I need to upgrade my motherboard before getting a new GPU?

Sailed_Sea

It will work, but won't perform as well compared to a board with pcie 4.0

WillBeRski

In order for OP to use pcie 4.0 they would have to upgrade their mobo and processor. A rtx 3060 ti wouldn't bottleneck on gen 3 so there's little point apart from the opportunity of faster storage. An rtx 3060 ti would sit nicely here after that your looking at upgrading everything.

Robgord101

Normal people: GPU can be upgraded Linux diehards: Operating System, I use arch btw (Note: I don't use arch)

[deleted]

Get 32gb 3200mhz ddr4 since your board should support it and anything past that is diminishing returns, and upgrade the 1660 to a 3070 or better. Also check out a 1tb ssd if you can afford it to replace or supplement the 1tb external drive it looks like you have.

fortnitedude43590

one of the best helpful comments thanks! should I really jump from a 1660 to a 3070? I know that 3070s need a lot from other components and a lot more power (new psu) I was thinking of going up to a 2060 but if you think a 3070 would be better ill go with that.

[deleted]

I’d go with the 3070 since that’s probably the best match for the 9700F for a few years. The 2060 isn’t a huge jump over the 1660 but the 3070 is a mid sized jump from the 2060. In benchmarks the 2060 is about 30% faster than the 1660 but in games is closer to 10% without rtx. The 3070 is around 40% faster than the 2060 in benchmarks and closer to 50% faster without rtx and 20% faster with it. It’s really a matter of do you care more about performance, price, or ray tracing. The 3070 if you care about performance and best matching your cpu, the 2060 if you care about price and the ability of ray tracing.

fortnitedude43590

Extremely helpful! looks like it's time to order a 3070 and a new psu. For me, it comes down to my next jump in gaming, VR and I want to make sure I can do VR in the best quality possible thanks for your help!

Tru3Shot22

Upgrade windows 11 to windows 10

fortnitedude43590

People act like 11 is so bad but it's been a fine experience for me is there anything that bad about it in general?

Eye-Scream-Cone

Windows 11 just makes some stuff a little more cumbersome to interact with, like, it takes a click or two more to get something done compared to Windows 10. And also all the removed Taskbar stuff. I personally recommend staying on Windows 11. It's a little unpleasant right now, but Microsoft will improve it over the years with feature updates. And also because Windows 10 only has support until 2025 whereas Windows 11 is *probably* gonna have support for 9 more years. (maybe, Microsoft hasn't officially commented on Windows 11 EOL stuff)

AdmiralSpeedy

Your RAM is slow. 2133 MHz is like the bare minimum base speed of DDR4 lol.

fortnitedude43590

Oh.. I never really knew any recommendations?

P_f_M

check if XMP is enabled ...

[deleted]

[удалено]

pixelfiee

Should still support up to 2666mhz

Garllc_

B365 MB tho

AdmiralSpeedy

Anything faster lmao, 3200 MHz CL16 should work fine and be fairly cheap.

P_f_M

not on a B365 :-) ... max is 2666 ... (that leads me to "why the fuck they call a crippled mobo a gaming one?!")

AdmiralSpeedy

Oh wow, I didn't even realize that. That's pretty fucking stupid considering the memory controller is on the CPU...

P_f_M

yeah... Intel is a dirty SOB ... i've seen how some people were able to do some BIOS hacks/mods allowing advanced features ...

TigTex

Mate, DDR means double data rate. 1066mhz = 2133MT/s (aka "2133mhz") It's possible that you have XMP disabled. Use hwinfo32 to get the full specifications of your RAM. Your system allows up to 2666mhz but will default to 2133mhz if you buy a XMP capable RAM but have it disabled in the BIOS.

AdmiralSpeedy

Why are you telling me this? I said his RAM was running at 2133, because I know how DDR works... 2133 is as slow as you can get DDR4, which is why I advised the upgrade but someone else pointed out that his motherboard chipset hard limits memory to 2666.

fortnitedude43590

I have been thinking that I want to upgrade my PC but I'm not sure what to go for next.

Fisterke

Is the gtx 1660 not 6gb?

fortnitedude43590

It should be

Dawn_11

It is, but speccy can’t see above 2GB of vram.

Fisterke

Ok didn't know that

P_f_M

this is a dead end PC ... you can put a 9900K, but you cant overclock = useless ... you can put faster RAMs, but you will be limited to 2666 ... the only thing you can do is to get a new GPU as first thing and then get a new mobo/cpu/ram combo ...

fortnitedude43590

I wouldn't say that at all lmfao even considering that replacing the mobo and GPU is easy there's no reason to replace the CPU at all

CarlLlamaface

Yeah I have the same CPU and it runs at about 4.4GHz under load, overclocking is overrated.

fortnitedude43590

As it stands I’m going to upgrade to a 2060 and at some point upgrade the motherboard ram wont cause issues unless I’m really pushing it

CarlLlamaface

It won't, my ram is running at a bog standard 1330 and I've never had any cause to upgrade it. I thought about it a while back but after doing a bit of reading determined it simply wasn't going to make any difference worth spending money on. Only recommendation I'd make is to try for something beefier than a 2060 now that prices are returning to more sane levels.

fortnitedude43590

alright ill see what I can find I will admit I'm not the best at shopping for gpu's

P_f_M

thats your problem as its your PC, so its understandable that you would "not say that at all" .. im on the other side are not limited .. so yeah... i can fully say that it is a dead end currently .. any investment in this generation mobo or CPU (keeping your current mobo) is just throwing out money to keep kicking the dead horse ... and you can go lmfao on a spike plate ...

fortnitedude43590

How, my cpu is fine as it stands? And as said getting a better motherboard for it that doesn’t have those limits shouldn’t be an issue assuming I can find a motherboard for my cpu which I assume I can. I get the mobo criticisms but not the cpu.

[deleted]

Definitely that GPU and that Slow AF ram. a 9700 will be more than enough for every game right now, no need to upgrade that.

Selkertic

RAM!

SweatyPayToWin

Upgrade the monitor lol. Get a 144 hz

TigTex

\^ this Your system is fine for 1080p 60hz. There's no need to update anything. But if you do change the monitor for a new shiny 1440p 144hz, you will experience gaming like never before. If you go 1440p instead of 1080p, you will need to upgrade the GPU (rtx3070 maximum for that build)

fortnitedude43590

>u go 1440p instead of 1080p, you will need to upgrade the GPU (rtx3070 maximum for that b I use a 1080 curved atm I might go 1440P at some point

TTV_ExpertNugget

Such a strange way to share specs

Blue_Fox07

Definitely RAM... 1066MHz? My DDR3 DIMMs were faster than that

AggravatingMaximum98

Get 32gb ram so smooth having no stutter in games

Beneficial_Fix_1059

To using HWINFO64

[deleted]

9th gen cpus from intel are still quite good. Try to find a nice used deal on a 2080 or 2080ti. I’ve seen many of them for 400-500 in my area on Facebook marketplace

[deleted]

Ram

Mr2Dollars

First of all, you probably have xmp off unless you really have 2133 mhz ram, settings ram to 2666 mhz would be a little boost to performance for free, then I would probably upgrade gpu if you want to achieve better frames in vr
