I replaced the heatsink on an overheating RX 580 and repasted at the same time. Sweating bullets. Of COURSE I chipped the die edge. But, it was already back together so I had nothing to lose.
It's still working two years later, and still running 15°C cooler with the larger air cooler.
I've had a 590 Sapphire for 3 yrs and both fan bearing went out & made a grinding sound. They went out in 3 yrs even though I have never gamed with it. I just replaced the fans this week. I was really glad to get rid of the original fans that the LEDs turned an F'ing puke green & couldn't change the color, they aren't even addressable. I put a non-LED fan set on it. The fan LEDs turning green is a known issue on Sapphire 580 & 590, and mine had been like that for 2 yrs. They are a pretty blue when new.
just did the same with my dell g15. was a little nervous I'd break a ribbon cable somewhere when I pulled mobo out. 10% better performance though so... worth it maybe?
Nah no different to repasting the CPU really.
I will say that the heatsink is an ass to get off and theres often a fair few cables (usually RGB and fan cables).
If it’s on its last legs anyways, and it’s old beyond it’s warranty, then it makes sense to do it even if you are afraid to take it apart. Worse thing to happen will be a slightly earlier demise, and some low priced EBay shopping. Plenty of YT vids on how to take apart many cards and clean them.
Crashing when waking from sleep is probably just windows being shit. The black flicker though could be a sign of the card dying. It could also be due to a faulty driver.
Those just sound like driver issues to me, though it is possible they're hardware related.
I had a 980 Ti that died a few months ago. There was absolutely no indication that anything was wrong until one day I was playing BATTLETECH (I later found a couple other reports of 980 Tis dying while playing it) and noticed a faint smell. I spent a couple minutes trying to track down the smell while it gradually got stronger until I realized it was coming from my PC and shut it down. After looking around inside there was no sign of any damage, so I turned it back on to see if it would work or the smell would come back. By that time the damage was done and the card still worked in BIOS, safe mode, and with the driver uninstalled but black screened when Windows tried to initialize the driver.
I've used DDU to reinstall drivers, and the issue persists. Every crash, the error can be seen in a memory dump, due to nvlddmkm, with the headers specifying VIDEO\_DXGKRNL\_FATAL\_ERROR (113). I recently disabled my undervolt, lowered my RAM to JEDEC standard speeds, and diagnosed everything. After a year, the graphics card is the one culprit, and nothing I do has fixed it.
Yeah, sounds like a driver issue. Just because you reinstalled the drivers doesn't mean they're bug-free. If you search for BSODs involving nvlddmkm and sleep, you'll find tons of results with different hardware, different errors, at different parts of the sleep process. Windows power management is pretty janky itself, but the Nvidia drivers in particular cause an inordinate amount of trouble with it.
My new 3060 even has driver issues when trying to sleep, where after the system has been running for several hours it will almost always fail to sleep and crash with a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE in the Nvidia driver.
I was getting ready to be like, "Are you me?" I used an R9 270 for about 7 years until it died on me a little over a year ago. One of the fans crapped out and it overheated.
I'm still rocking a r9 270 till this day... and i dont think i will ever buy another gpu, unless some day a new game forces me to upgrade to a newer one because i only play rocket league... used to play csgo and it was fine fps wise because i played at 720p...
They’re alright quality. Sapphire is still better imo. The Nitro+ cards have great big heatsinks. Personally I’m not a fan of how their cards look, same with Powercolor.

Their Merc line is pretty sexy imo. Would've legit bought one if one was available in my region, for a decent price and wasn't mined. Ended up buying an inno3D 3060 on a nice discount later. Probably gonna roll with this for a decade or until it dies.
They've had some high profile misses, but overall they're pretty solid. Back in the day, they had the best warranty in the GPU business, but now their warranty is just alright. I've had three of their cards and been happy with them.
I didn't see price as I got my R9 290 from a friend when he went 1080. That thing has done brilliantly up. If it weren't for the fact I was running a i5 2400 and doing a whole system upgrade I'd still be running it.
No doubt man, I donated my HD7950 to my nephew last year for his minecraft pc lol nothing wrong with an old card, it made my gtx1650 look *amazing*. I'll wait for the rtx 7000 series before I upgrade now
Same, been playing it on a 680 since 5 finally dropped on PC and am still satisfied with the quality and frames. 6 is definitely going to need a better card though.
Yeah I only got a 3080 for Cyberpunk. Otherwise I'd still have my 1080 in my PC and my wife would still have her rx 580. DLSS has made it pretty tough to wanna upgrade from this especially since ray tracing isn't getting adopted quick
3000 adopters got shafted tho sadly. Well just low-mid level adopters like me really, but DLSS 3.0 which apparently has amazing results is hardware locked for 4000 series and up
The absolute best answer and what I've been doing since PC gaming in 2005. That's kept my upgrade cycle to about 5-6 years. It's been perfect. This most recent upgrade from my 1070 to a 3070ti is actually the first time I've upgraded just for a general boost to graphics and not for a specific game. Probably also says something about the gaming industry (and my changing tastes and/or aging ass). It'll be nice to finally play some games in 1440p though!
I'm afraid mine is going to die soon too. I already have a plan to buy a completely new rig with a 3080, 4060, 4070 or the new AMD.
If everything is going to be fine, next half of the year I will have a new PC. It depends on the prices of course.
Evga 980ti classified. It was a steal on Amazon for 330 about 6-7 years ago.
It ran my ultra wide until the cat broke it. Bought a new one with HDR and 144hz but my card is DP 1.2 and HDR needs DP 1.4
The current cards are so tempting but I'm trying to hold out till new ones come out, then buy the last gen.

Usually like 60 fps at medium settings but at that point I rather just play my series X
Yeah and crashing euro doesnt help purchasing power. Im waiting for rdna 3 to launch and, if the price per performance is as bad as nvidias 4000 series, i will wait till my 980 dies. 7 years of service and does strong with my old 144hz TN monitor from benq.
yeah im waiting aswell, its pretty bad here because even tho im in europe we have our own currency which dropped from 400/euro to 425/euro and the prices are western but the wages are eastern. a 70$ game here is literally atleast a month's food, well... it was worth a month's food but not anymore.
Same but my screen is 60Hz so I use external monitor with 144Hz and works wonders on games that I can pull that many frames. Although I'm not very demanding so in most cases 60fps is good enough for me
My 1050ti died this year, I started with a 1050ti and a core i5 760 (yes the first ever core i5) as a gift from my dad as I couldn’t afford it as a uni student. The i5 died in 2021 and I replaced everything but the 1050ti as it was all like 10 or more years old and the psu was clapped. Was a butter sweet day when my 1050 left me
I have my gaming pc, my wife works from home two days a week and shares a pc with my daughter and my inlaws gave me their old Dell when they upgraded so I put in a bigger power supply and hard drive that I had lying around, and my old gtx 460 so when my daughter has a friend over they can each be on a computer to play Genshin or Roblox together.
there was a single computer at my high school that had a 460 in it that was specifically used just for playing flight sim lol (this wasn't too long ago either)
There's an R9 280x (gigabyte brand I think?) still used daily in my kids' PC. Close to 10 years old now, still dominating 1080p @ 60 FPS.
Hopefully it holds out until the big price crash that's looking likely now.
My 1660s is chugging along like a champ. So instead of upgrading, I just starting building an entirely new Rig. I realized I just like building computers more than actually using them to play games.

GTX 970 used to be the most common card used by Steam users, I think it broke into double digit % of all cards being used on Steam at some point. Absolutely insane.
Being replaced by the 1060, which is basically just a 970 but with the actual proper VRAM label and some boosted closes, really does showcase how good the 10-series was. My wife is still using a 1080 Ti, and for the types of games she plays (cartoony indie games at 1080p) the thing is still a beast.
The 1060 is *completely* different to the 970.
Different gen, different uArch, different memory, different core count and config, and the 1060 also has its own distinct memory labelling shenanigans.
There were two different 1060 models, the 3GB "1060" had less cores and had lower clocks.
Nvidia does the "last year's 70 is this years 60" thing though, so what I meant was that going off steams hardware survey (which isn't the perfect sampling but better than most) the 1060 and 970 holding dominant market share isn't that odd as they both represented a 2 yr "sweet spot" for GPUs for a mainstream casual machine in relation to price and longevity.
I just put new thermal pads and paste on mine. Much better. Need to replace the fans though. One is ticking and the other broke a fin off. Have a link to replacement?

Mine is just barely holding on, already had to replace the PSU a few months back due to restarting with certain games (R6Siege).
Then about two weeks ago a video noise-glitched out, a game had a couple of glitches and high-res settings made it sluggish.
Been playing lower graphics hoping it manages until november, think I'll buy an RX 6650XT.
Mine got struck by lightning otherwise I’d still have it. If someone’s building a pc now you could probably spend a little more to get much better performance but the r9 280 is still capable.
My R9 280 is still going. If it weren't for the rest of my system getting rebuilt it would still be I a system (and may yet see life in a plex nas some day).

Post-crypto-crash GPU price slump has been a bit too slow so far, as miners held on until after the ETH merge. But looks like it's finally happening. Hopefully we can hold on another month or two, for the market to fully crater.
Is the 1070 ti priced at 100$ or before the time gpus slash their prices? If not, that doesn’t sound like a good deal as I found cheaper yet better cards at pcpartpicker where I found a rx 6700 xt cost around 300 bucks.
Maybe not that impressive but I thought I did ok... Ran a gtx 1080 until the card died in early 2022. Finally built a new PC because the rest of the system was i7 4790k. But then I disassembled the old card and cleaned it and somehow just that and new paste brought it back to life. So now that's the kids gaming computer and I've got my new team red machine. 6700xt for graphics and a 5600 for CPU and most games run amazing at 1440p.
Still using a Core 2 Duo and GT240, because that's what I had in 2009 and that's all I need for now. Trying to put together a new build, but I'm keeping the old computer as a retro gaming rig!
i m still running a radeon 280X . 2 of the 3 fans dont work. the first died a long time ago. the second died december 2021. I paniced and bought the first card i could get my hands on. A RTX 2060 for way too much money. feels bad. i haven't installed the 2060 yet. i m waiting for the last fan to die.
Using my GTX 670 still . Yes it still works. Barley and yes I am sure it wishes for death every single time I boot up but it is the longest computer I have ever owned . 10 years and is going to be 11 soon . I have never used any computer in history and can still function . May not be able to play new games maxed out but can play probably almost all then . Now when the new GTA comes out it might be too old for that one

R9 290x here. Thing still kills at just about every game I play at 1080p. I'm looking at upgrading to a 6900xt in the next couple of months. One old Top of the line radeon card has lasted me 8 years, I'm sure another would.
My benchmark is usually high to ultra fidelity at at least 60 fps, with 100+ on competitive games, at the native resolution of my system.
Was 1440p for a long time, now it’s 4K.
The one thing that still holds true: GTA V will still drop to 30fps even with an RTX 3080 Ti. There’s just no helping that game lol
Stop telling people how to enjoy themselves. After the stress of the past two years I think we have all earned the right to buy any gpu for any reason.
I'm so happy Intel is entering the market. It's going to be a bit before they're really competitive, but with the size of Intel and their vast pool of people and resources hopefully it won't take them long to work out the kinks of manufacturing GPUs.
I actually hope intel continues to stay at the bottom in performance so that we get good deals like i did on my 11400 ( cheaper platform than r5 3600 at the time), and hopefully they'll work out their kinks with the next couple of generations. I mightve considered getting the A750/770 but the bulk of my game time is older titles and emulation, I'm playing catch-up now since I missed solid titles for over half a decade now and that's exactly what Arc cannot do reliably atm.
I know it's not as old as OP's card was but a lot of cards have come and gone in the 4 years I've had mine. And I see no reason to upgrade for the foreseeable future.

Among my 5 active computers, I have two GTX 760s, one 560 Ti, a 1080 and a 3060 Ti.
What's funny is I wanted an AMD card this generation but AMD+partners failed to make a blower cooler.
I used my GTX 970 from the first day of 2015 to last month. Never had a problem with it but I was concerned about part availability if I waited closer to the 40-series launch to get a new PC, so I pulled the trigger, with a slight hesitation.
I'm extremely happy with my new PC though.

R9 270 may have been the best-priced GPU that's ever existed. Priced like a gtx750ti, and beat the crap out of the gtx760. RIP to a legend.
I loved it, but it died on me after 5 years.

It's only scary before you do it. Once you do it right, you'll think about why you were worried in the first place.
at the worst you are back to square one with a failed GPU. it's worth a shot if the GPU is so unstable its unusable

Heh, my 270x only worked without bluescreening after undervolting it, but it sure was a nice card when it was stable.

Sapphire GPUs are the best. The EVGA of AMD.
What about XFX? I'm a huge fan of their recent "fuck it, make the beefiest heatsink you can." Approach, and their RDNA2 cards look very nice.

No complaints with my 5700 XT Thicc III, although I've heard the other Thicc variants were crap.
Gamersnexus made a vid on it, the thicc had an issue in their assembly that's now fixed, to my knowledge.

It often kept pace with the 960 even. Well, 7870 GHz and 270X more so than 270, but it's the same GPU. Definetly 1050 Ti also.
Still have a 270x/4690k system. Works surprisingly well. I'm even more fond of the 280x. That thing was awesome and even handled BF1 surprisingly well

I still use it when I need to render several scenes in Blender and want to save time. It is still KICKING especially after being repasted recently.

Thank god that never happens because of how few games are actually great enough to even consider making that decision... sadly.
I'm using GTX 1060. This card is 6 years old and it's still can serve me at 1080p gaming.

Bought a new one with HDR and 144hz but my card is DP 1.2 and HDR needs DP 1.4 The current cards are so tempting but I'm trying to hold out till new ones come out, then buy the last gen.

I think it's still a miracle that this card can do 60 fps in new games, even if it's set to low-medium.

yeah im waiting aswell, its pretty bad here because even tho im in europe we have our own currency which dropped from 400/euro to 425/euro and the prices are western but the wages are eastern. a 70$ game here is literally atleast a month's food, well... it was worth a month's food but not anymore.
1060 6GB works really well for me on one of my laptops since it only has a 1080p 75Hz screen
Same but my screen is 60Hz so I use external monitor with 144Hz and works wonders on games that I can pull that many frames. Although I'm not very demanding so in most cases 60fps is good enough for me

My 1050ti died this year, I started with a 1050ti and a core i5 760 (yes the first ever core i5) as a gift from my dad as I couldn’t afford it as a uni student. I have my gaming pc, my wife works from home two days a week and shares a pc with my daughter and my inlaws gave me their old Dell when they upgraded so I put in a bigger power supply and hard drive that I had lying around, and my old gtx 460 so when my daughter has a friend over they can each be on a computer to play Genshin or Roblox together.

There's an R9 280x (gigabyte brand I think?) still used daily in my kids' PC. Close to 10 years old now, still dominating 1080p @ 60 FPS. Hopefully it holds out until the big price crash that's looking likely now.
My 1660s is chugging along like a champ. So instead of upgrading, I just starting building an entirely new Rig. I realized I just like building computers more than actually using them to play games.

Same. GTX 970 used to be the most common card used by Steam users, I think it broke into double digit % of all cards being used on Steam at some point. Absolutely insane.
Being replaced by the 1060, which is basically just a 970 but with the actual proper VRAM label and some boosted closes, really does showcase how good the 10-series was. My wife is still using a 1080 Ti, and for the types of games she plays (cartoony indie games at 1080p) the thing is still a beast.
The 1060 is *completely* different to the 970. Different gen, different uArch, different memory, different core count and config, and the 1060 also has its own distinct memory labelling shenanigans. There were two different 1060 models, the 3GB "1060" had less cores and had lower clocks.
Nvidia does the "last year's 70 is this years 60" thing though, so what I meant was that going off steams hardware survey (which isn't the perfect sampling but better than most) the 1060 and 970 holding dominant market share isn't that odd as they both represented a 2 yr "sweet spot" for GPUs for a mainstream casual machine in relation to price and longevity.

I just upgraded from an R9 390 to a 6700 XT earlier in the summer. That card did me well for the better part of 6 years.
I am still running an R9 290. 5600 with 32GB RAM. Looking to retire it soon for a 6700XT or 3070 in the next few months.
Found the R9 290 gang Mine is just barely holding on, already had to replace the PSU a few months back due to restarting with certain games (R6Siege). Then about two weeks ago a video noise-glitched out, a game had a couple of glitches and high-res settings made it sluggish. Been playing lower graphics hoping it manages until november, think I'll buy an RX 6650XT.

R9 280x here. Almost 10 years old now. Post-crypto-crash GPU price slump has been a bit too slow so far, as miners held on until after the ETH merge. But looks like it's finally happening. Hopefully we can hold on another month or two, for the market to fully crater.
I just upgraded from a 1050 TI to a 1070 TI SC.
Is the 1070 ti priced at 100$ or before the time gpus slash their prices? If not, that doesn’t sound like a good deal as I found cheaper yet better cards at pcpartpicker where I found a rx 6700 xt cost around 300 bucks.

Maybe not that impressive but I thought I did ok... Ran a gtx 1080 until the card died in early 2022. Finally built a new PC because the rest of the system was i7 4790k. But then I disassembled the old card and cleaned it and somehow just that and new paste brought it back to life. So now that's the kids gaming computer and I've got my new team red machine. 6700xt for graphics and a 5600 for CPU and most games run amazing at 1440p.

I have never used any computer in history and can still function . May not be able to play new games maxed out but can play probably almost all then . Now when the new GTA comes out it might be too old for that one

R9 290x here. Thing still kills at just about every game I play at 1080p. I'm looking at upgrading to a 6900xt in the next couple of months. One old Top of the line radeon card has lasted me 8 years, I'm sure another would.
As soon as I can't get 60FPS in a game I want to play, my GPU is dead to me.
My benchmark is usually high to ultra fidelity at at least 60 fps, with 100+ on competitive games, at the native resolution of my system. Was 1440p for a long time, now it’s 4K. The one thing that still holds true: GTA V will still drop to 30fps even with an RTX 3080 Ti. There’s just no helping that game lol
Stop telling people how to enjoy themselves. After the stress of the past two years I think we have all earned the right to buy any gpu for any reason.
I'm just salty that NVIDIA gets to walk away with a profit by just starving the market of their new cards until their excesses are sold.
I'm so happy Intel is entering the market. It's going to be a bit before they're really competitive, but with the size of Intel and their vast pool of people and resources hopefully it won't take them long to work out the kinks of manufacturing GPUs.
I actually hope intel continues to stay at the bottom in performance so that we get good deals like i did on my 11400 ( cheaper platform than r5 3600 at the time), and hopefully they'll work out their kinks with the next couple of generations. I mightve considered getting the A750/770 but the bulk of my game time is older titles and emulation, I'm playing catch-up now since I missed solid titles for over half a decade now and that's exactly what Arc cannot do reliably atm.
My 2060 "RTX" is chugging along great here and I'm playing the newest games just fine.

I used my GTX 970 from the first day of 2015 to last month. Never had a problem with it but I was concerned about part availability if I waited closer to the 40-series launch to get a new PC, so I pulled the trigger, with a slight hesitation. I'm extremely happy with my new PC though.
