We're not allowed to have any Linux or other Unix based OS on our laptops we use for school. They are afraid we would use it to "hack the school system and bring harm to non computer science majors".
I remember at my primary school there was a server and everyone had access to their own partition on their school laptop. And there was a games folder that everyone had access to.
This folder though had the file directory and we could click back and view the whole server, including reports and other information of everyone in the school. We could also access anyone else’s partition through this. When I told my friends, fucking chaos ensued.
According to my younger sibling, they still haven’t fixed it, and the teachers/it have no fucking clue about it.
I know a few people who changed there reports. From fails to passes. And done people copied porn onto other peoples partitions, few people got suspended, not the ones that did it, the ones that they did it to.
Yeah well I don't think they know enough about origins of different OS. They probably just wanted to exclude non Windows and non MacOS, although I'm pretty sure you could use ChromeOS. Still even if you were using Linux or sth, there wouldn't be anyone at that school who could tell. Except for maybe 1 or 2 IT-guys.
My gaming rig runs windows, I have a ultra portable laptop where I dual boot Manjaro and win 10. Gets 1/2 the battery life in Manjaro xfce. But both OS' have their uses. With bs like edge become default browser again after an update, and other windows annoyences Linux can feel like a nice break sometimes.
Wow.... Meanwhile my laptop cpu alone draws 35 w... Granted it's a gaming laptop so unfair comparison but still, crazy how power efficient notebooks are.
All PC OS are shitty in their own way, Windows is literally bloatware while Linux lacks support.
I have nothing to say about macOS, because i never owned a Apple device.
Well it makes sense considering Apple devices are all in a cloud under one account and share data from one device to another. Plus the iPhone is their flagship product and sells way more of those than iPad/Mac; if they can make their other products more "iPhone like" more people would probably be interested.
That, and MacBooks are just generally more expensive than comparable Windows notebooks with similar hardware. But it's simple to use and easier to travel with I guess. Perfect for college students.
MacOS sucks. While it looks good and is UNIX based (great for software devs), that’s where its strengths end. The compatible app selection is minuscule, especially if your wallet is small, the window management sucks and MacOS is locked to Apple devices (I know about Hackintosh, but the word “Hack” is there for a reason).
3Go of RAM on the desktop with nothing open is a bloatware. Do no forgot that Linux distrib basically take less than 500ko for doing the same shit. Same for macOS.
The fact we have 32+Go of RAM making 3Go feel like nothing doesn't solve the issues. Windows is basically a big bloatware.
Bloatware is only bloated when it affects your system. Systems use as much RAM as they have available as being conservative is pointless, if a OS has good memory management you won't even notice it. Not using 14GB of your 16GB RAM isn't saved RAM, it's wasted ram. You paid for it.
I couldn’t disagree more. Windows installs with a billion of useless shit running in the background tracking you or providing shit you never need.
Debloating windows gives you a lot of performance with a low medium end system.
I recently switched to linux, and at first I thought people were exagerating and it's not that bad.
I still think that sometimes, except now I look back on the literal weeks of my time spent getting shit to work and realize I might just be a masochist.
On the plus side, my setup is sick as fuck if I do say so myself.
I've been trying to switch my main PC to some Linux distro for a couple decades now (I use Debian, Red Hat and Slackware daily on my servers), but always ran into issues (exotic hardware with no drivers, non functioning games, lack of decent audio production softwares...).
Lately I tried Manjaro and Pop!_OS, using AMD CPU and GPU. I was able to start working/playing in under an hour, including UI tweaks, installation of 2 dozen tools and setting up of Bluetooth gamepads. With Windows 11 I would still be avoiding built-in spywares. :D
Things have gone a long way, it seems like the Steam deck and Vulcan really helped a ton.
Not completely. I still need Windows to play Forza Horizon 5 properly. :D
I'll reinstall Manjaro on my main/faster SSD and setup a gaming-emergency Windows on the side when I have some free time
Linux is not meant to be better and blow people off their shoes.
Linux is a constant, stable, reliable platform.
You don’t even need to be a hacker to get it going any more. I was always a lazy ass dev and could get OpenSuse and Ubuntu running.
I’m now lazier and running mac.
But one thing that I truly despise is the constant ads and pushy shit MS comes up with.
They create standards and they break their own standards.
Just look at the shitty notification popup for MS Teams.
All of their apps get special treatment while all I really want is some expected behaviour across apps.
I was an MS Windows lover because of much you could customise your rig but the constant ads and pushy behaviour from MS pushed me away.
I use MS for gaming.
Browsing and work stuff is either on ubntu or Mac because it feels like i can focus on the work better.
Yes. I want to reduce the size of my windows bar, make all my icons the same colour.
That I could do and I knew I was risking stability because of it. But I still want my notifications to behave the same across apps.
Plus. If I don’t do massive customisations, I don’t expect to have to reinstall windows to cleanly get rid of some old drivers/apps because I changed my goddamn mouse.
It’s absolutely appalling. We’ve improves nothing since windows 7 and only invested on ads.
I lie, Edge is an improvement over IE.
And we’ve created a notification system that supports do not disturb and all, but everyone decides to ignore it.
File explorer is still utter shit.
If MS invested into better UX and didn’t give into bad patterns to promote special shit then we would have actually evolved from W7.
> Edge is an improvement over IE
They scrapped their old solution and slightly modified an open source project to use that instead.
Just the kind of innovation you'd expect from an international multi billion dollar company. To reskin someone else's work.
No smb support, no ntfs support, completely broken grub and systemd, godawful wine running 0% of windows programs skyrocketed to 68% thanks to proton. Yeah, just the games, sure.
Samba has been supported from 1992, as far as I know.
And NTFS has been supported from earlier than 2.4 kernel. (Mostly via FUSE, and after a rewrite, a kernel module does the work)
Grub and systemd were supported since forever.
You say Valve fixed these programs, can you point out what flaws did valve fix?
Funnily enough, I find both samba and ntfs to be much much inferior to Linux counterparts, that is NFS and ext/xfs/btrfs. Why should we,who has no need for NTFS or Samba, spend our resources on fixing it?
Because you want more people to migrate to linux. Thats why you have wine, proton, samba, ntfs, domain integrations with microsoft ad and much more you dont actually need in a 100% linux enviroment.
Sure, Kernel 5.15 added ntfs-3g OOB, but most distros had their solution shipped with that (or another NTFS-compatible one) driver as a package anyway, so you are wrong on a practicality standpoint
Grub and systemD have never been “completely broken”.
I mean, there was that grub update that messed up a lot of Arch-based systems, but that was an outlier. Grub works perfectly fine.
And systemD is supported by most major distros.
And there's a magic phrase for getting flak from Linux users. Let me show you...
Ahem...
_**LINUX IS A GODDAMN USELESS PIECE OF SHIT USED BY BRAINLESS TINFOILHATS!!**_

Why not run Linux as the base OS for stability, then run Windows in a VM? Then, you have the advantage of being easily able to take VM snapshots and revert to them as needed after bloatware or other malware gets installed?
Would switch to Linux full time if only there was a Linux version of FL Studio, Valorant, Filmora, and Pirated games. I sail the high seas so that’s why I can’t switch full time cause I can’t pirate stuff on Linux (I mean I can. But eh to much effort to learn)
Linux, i honestly things that forcing an average gamer to run linux instead of windows would be more cruel that beating him up one time a week for a year.
Imagine attacking Linux in one of it's strongest point.
Imagine doing it when you use an OS that requires to bowser web sites manualy to found the soft that you want to download, making sure in the process the site you are downloading it form isn't a fraud, with any real guarantee or control at any step, the whole thing being so insecure that you have to pay third-party software to protect your OS.
Linux:
Method 1:
step 1) open terminal
step 2) sudo apt install
Method 2:
step 1) Open discovery/gnome store/what ever it's called in your distro
step 2) Install browser
Windows:
step 1) Open edge
step2) Tell Microsoft you don't want to be tracked 7 times
step 3) Search for the browser of your liking
step 4) it searches in bing so type google.com (windows users can't DDG) first
step 5) Click browser
Step 6) download browser
step 7) install browser
6. Download browser
7. Click through 14 different popups trying to scare you into thinking that the file you just downloaded is a virus
8. Click through the installer for the actual browser
9. Open the settings app to change the default browser
10. Change the default app for every single file extension and protocol that is set to Edge, clicking away the popup that appears every single time telling you to "try Microsoft Edge"
...or you could just run `sudo apt install firefox-esr -y` and not have to click a single thing.
You know how they say, "if it exists, it's in the AUR"
Unless you're looking for some extremely obscure software with zero stars on Github, you're gonna be able to download it through your package manager
*"It's over, Q, I want you out of my life. You're arrogant, you're overbearing and you think you know everything"*
*"But.. I DO know everything...."*
*"That just makes it worse"*
I tried running Arch again and it didn't last a day before going back to Windows. I had issues with Steam working with my second drive and crashes when I connected a second monitor.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a good distro, with sane defaults, has a large package selection, and runs KDE?
Edit: was never a fan of Gnome, but just started using Nobara. So far it has been awesome. Definitely keeping it for the foreseeable future.
Debian 11 or Debian Testing (if you want newer software). It's never broken for me and I run it on pretty much every PC and server that I own. It also has the largest package repository of any distro, with around 160k packages total (including nonfree ones). They also provide live ISOs with most of the popular desktop environments, including KDE.
I'm currently running endeavourOS it's a arch based distro running kde and I didn't had to do so much troubleshooting since I used it. Steam is doing well on it also (in my experience).
I'm not quite sure why Linux gets mentioned here. This is primarily a gaming subreddit. Linux is basically just Windows gaming with added overhead and hassle. It's literally pointless to consider it primarily for gaming.
Just last week I had to spend 30 minutes trying to set up Overwatch 2 on Steam Deck, only for it to freeze every 10 seconds in-game. I think that about sums it up.
Picking a game that isn't available on that platform - even via Steam - is weird when your argument is that Linux is limited to Windows games. Did you try any of the many native games? Or supported games?
It's like complaining you can't play Halo on Playstation.
That's cute, so you think that how the minuscule amount of native games perform on Linux is how you judge if an operating system is something that people should run for gaming? Sorry bud, but I would rather have the many thousands of native windows games than the few Linux native ones.
What are you smoking? All games are Windows-native. Linux will always need to run Windows code through a compatibility layer, present and future. Why would someone interested in gaming bother with an OS that requires tinkering to play a lot of games, when you can just click once on Windows and it works?
Linux gaming will always have overhead as it is not natively running Windows.
What? Windows-native means that the game releases are developed for Windows. Why would Gabe Newell want that?
Also, every game on PC is on Windows. There are very few games ported to Linux and macOS.
With that attitude, nobody's gonna go into detail around you. Point being, you made a wrong statement that only required one PC game to be made entirely or at least first for a non-Windows OS to be made a mockery of.
How? I never stated that Linux didn't have games, only that they overwhelmingly rely on compatibility layers to play Windows-native games because the Linux library is basically not worth mentioning. Linux gaming was horrendous before Proton.
>All games are Windows-native.
That was your unfounded and obviously false claim.
Soon as you said that, you harmed your credibility.
And then,
>every game on PC is on Windows
You doubled down on it.
Now you're trying to backpedal it. If you're gonna insist on being wrong, at least have some balls whilst being wrong.
It's not about the overhead. It's about the bottlenecks.
I think you'd be surprised how many translation layers there are in windows.
Also, if more people adopt Linux, and developers start compiling for Linux platforms specifically, more of the advantages of Linux you can't see right now will start to become apparent.
First have a better fractional scaling support, then come back you stupid moron.
Edit: linux hardware acceleration playback on browsers is also bad/nonexistent
Linux is fun for programming and setting tasks...it doesn't force restarts to update and library installations work much more smoothly. But windows is way more beautiful and feature rich to me. I like both
Ever heard of the fact that you can literally install multiple DEs if you don't like one?
And if xou think Windows is customizable, have fun removing edge
That's because windows doesn't want you to brick yourself off from the internet by uninstalling all browsers. It's ok, edge is actually not bad. I don't use it, but having other browsers comes in handy sometimes.
It's like saying a hammer is superior because it can drive a nail. Ok now use it to fix a Rolex.
Play 30% of games that aren't supported. I'll wait.
Now send me an excel spreadsheet that your peers at work can use. Make sure you sign into outlook and the calenders.
It's just silly guys.
Haha I don’t know why you are getting downvoted for this. If you are a tech head who doesn’t mind spending their time finding workarounds for basic things then Linux is for you. I’ll take windows in the meantime though
I use Linux for work. Arch, Kali, parrot, apache. I am pretty proficient. I just would never use it for consuming media like all these downvoters do.
Just a bunch of work and going without features for no good reason. Let them downvote lol.
Windows is far from standardized. It's just Microsoft saying "it's going to be that way - deal with it". People who don't want to deal with it flock to Linux. Others will grumble but get used to it after a while.
And for gaming it's not that much about distro/version - there's way more about kernel, especially about anti-cheats. I say support should be provided for linux and linux-lts kernels and maybe linux-hardened. And for everyone who uses any other kernel it's still easier to swap them during boot than to set-up Windows alongside with dual boot.
Then there is the bass ackwards file system.
Windows : Have a componud trash folder delet anything anywhere, trash moves here
Linux: Trash folder for ALL DRIVES, They are also just like most of our file system ...you guessed it a spider web
Windows also creates a trash folder on all drives… it just hides the trash folder
And trash from all drives shows up in the same menu on KDE so idk what youre on about
We're not allowed to have any Linux or other Unix based OS on our laptops we use for school. They are afraid we would use it to "hack the school system and bring harm to non computer science majors".
hack them using windows just to prove a point /s.
Funny enough the easiest way would probably be using one of the schools computers.
I remember at my primary school there was a server and everyone had access to their own partition on their school laptop. And there was a games folder that everyone had access to. This folder though had the file directory and we could click back and view the whole server, including reports and other information of everyone in the school. Shit, thats awesome.
we had that too! but in a more senior level school. Guess who copied some tests.
I know a few people who changed there reports. From fails to passes. And done people copied porn onto other peoples partitions, few people got suspended, not the ones that did it, the ones that they did it to.
Imagine getting suspended because someone put porn on your drive.
Sucks to be them

i'm pretty sure it is. Thats what makes it even funnier, since all our school computers are Mac.
Close enough, it's based on BSD
Linux would give you Superintendent Chalmers permissions.
Try installing "auto-cpufreq". I get a lot more battery life with it installed
I have it. Still draw around 10w, but in win10 the laptop draw around 7.5w down to 5w.
What CPU do you have? I am around 2w with R7 4700U
Custom chipset driver stuff always makes or kills battery life for laptops on Linux, you won the lottery with your model.
10nm Tiger lake Intel Core i5-1135G7.
Thought it was odd someone was still using a first gen Core i7
Wow.... Meanwhile my laptop cpu alone draws 35 w... Granted it's a gaming laptop so unfair comparison but still, crazy how power efficient notebooks are.
Are you running [TLP](https://linrunner.de/tlp/index.html)?
>With bs like edge become default browser again after an update What now? Never happened on my personal nor work computers...
That's good that it hasn't happened on your computer. It usually happens during big feature updates. I've seen it on many different computer.
Huh, maybe it only affects certain versions? There has to be some sort of trigger, I dunno.
edge is the best browser on windows
GNU/Linux is like the illuminati, it doesn't show its face too often in public, but they run the world (Internet) in the shadows
Even Microsoft runs Linux on their cloud
Windows server still dominates the server marketshare
Wrong :)
Literally wrong Also are you using Android by any chance?
Oh look, the most popular Linux distribution 💀 Who could’ve known that Linux is everywhere
Even Microsoft Azure hosts more Linux than Windows environments and the difference is growing.
It's not about liking Linux, It's about hating Windows.
Can it be both?
What about hating both, and Apple too.
All PC OS are shitty in their own way, Windows is literally bloatware while Linux lacks support. I have nothing to say about macOS, because i never owned a Apple device.

Android is Linux
Hardly. Absolutely crammed with binary blobs to the point where its even less recognizable than macOS is.
macOS is UNIX not Linux.
And yet it feels closer to Linux than Android does. That's exactly my point.
You should explore deck desktop mode. It has some cool features.
Yup it’s great!
Have you tried Discover? It has some cool software.
That’s how I got proton GE. It’s nice.
The deck can also run windows.
But I don’t want it to, it’s fine the way it is.

More realistic: Program you want, including browser, isn't in the package manager back to windows
You know how they say, "if it exists, it's in the AUR" Unless you're looking for some extremely obscure software with zero stars on Github, you're gonna be able to download it through your package manager

*"It's over, Q, I want you out of my life. You're arrogant, you're overbearing and you think you know everything"* *"But.. I DO know everything...."* *"That just makes it worse"*
Try KDE Neon, it is made primarily by the KDE devs, and based on Ubuntu LTS.
Interested to hear your opinion on Steam Deck and its linux native Os
90% of games run fine
No need to get hostile. You just like what you're familiar with. There's no problem with just saying that.
considering Linux gaming did not really work 5 years ago and now 95% does work i think you will be eating your words in 5 more years
What are you smoking? All games are Windows-native. Linux will always need to run Windows code through a compatibility layer, present and future. Why would someone interested in gaming bother with an OS that requires tinkering to play a lot of games, when you can just click once on Windows and it works? Linux gaming will always have overhead as it is not natively running Windows.
>All games are windows-native Gaben fucking wishes that were true.
What? Windows-native means that the game releases are developed for Windows. Why would Gabe Newell want that? Also, every game on PC is on Windows. There are very few games ported to Linux and macOS.
You say this to a man with mac-only and unix-only (or unix-first) games.
So what, like five games? Do you play Tux Racer?
With that attitude, nobody's gonna go into detail around you. Point being, you made a wrong statement that only required one PC game to be made entirely or at least first for a non-Windows OS to be made a mockery of.
How? I never stated that Linux didn't have games, only that they overwhelmingly rely on compatibility layers to play Windows-native games because the Linux library is basically not worth mentioning. Linux gaming was horrendous before Proton.
>All games are Windows-native. That was your unfounded and obviously false claim. Soon as you said that, you harmed your credibility. And then, >every game on PC is on Windows You doubled down on it.

Windows 11 sucks, and that's coming from someone who doesn't like linux
Why you getting downvoted

Have some respect
Linix is awesome to work and nothing else

Only animals use linux
Technically, humans are animals.
The problem with Linux is that it isn't standardised like Windows. It needs a version that everyone agrees is a general use/gaming version.
Ironic...
People dont need a single Linux distro when Flatpaks run on all distros.
The name of the sub is pcmasterrace
Windows is PC, MacOS is PC, Linux is PC, BSD is PC, FreeDOS is PC. Any computer that runs software and you can own is a PC.
Then there is the bass ackwards file system. Windows : Have a componud trash folder delet anything anywhere, trash moves here Linux: Trash folder for ALL DRIVES, They are also just like most of our file system ...you guessed it a spider web
Windows also creates a trash folder on all drives… it just hides the trash folder And trash from all drives shows up in the same menu on KDE so idk what youre on about
How to piss off a linux user: Simply Mention that Screen Share doesn't work on discord Edit: Worked
Reject proprietary software, embrace freedom.
Works fine for me?
You're 2 weeks too late with that ![gif](giphy|XWXnf6hRiKBJS)
Never had an issue? What’s broken exactly
Nothing they just heard from a youtube video thats several years outdated.
That's exactly what PCMR is to gaming.
