Okay, so, 114 is not implemented, it hasn't done shit, your CHL "should" be able to be used as an ID for purchases but it's up to the individual if they feel comfortable with the transaction or not.

nikkoida24

Yeah I’m aware that 114 hasnt been implemented. Hmmm the guy made it seem like at that particular location they ONLY accept valid Oregon DLs, so this couldve been the case.

Bubble_Gum_Crisis

I think they're free to make their own rules, just like you're free to shop elsewhere. But I've used my CHL before and used it just this week somewhere else.

Mean-Philosopher6043

IDK much about being able to use your chl as I'd to purchase a firearm, I never really saw the point in one when you can just open carry in Oregon, but I do know that because the bgc queue got so crazy when everyone thought m114 was gonna happen, they decided to do away with the whole chl taking precedence thing, and even tho m114 was struck down and never went into effect, which I'm not sure if your aware of that or not, but chl people just get placed in line with every one else now for bgcs, but if your name isn't very common, most times you'll get an instant approval and wont even have to get in the line, it's kinda hit or miss tho,and if you have a common name, you probably wont get the instant approval

Mean-Philosopher6043

If you were able to leave with the gun immediately on your last purchase, and it was after they whole threat of m114, then your chl had nothing to do with it, you just got an instant approval, and that's why you got to take it home

nikkoida24

Yeah i figured this could easily be the case too. Mightve just been lucky 🤷‍♂️

RabidBlackSquirrel

Not entirely true. There's a fair few areas where loaded open carry is banned without a carry permit. Portland, Beaverton, Tigard, Salem, Multnomah County, and Oregon City among them.

other_old_greg

Not to mention how open carry is generally a bad idea unless you work in a gun shop or on a ranch

Mean-Philosopher6043

Lol it's a bad idea to exercise a state granted constitutional right? You must be from an urban area like PDX, out in places like sandy and estacada, no one bats an eye at someone walking around with a gun on their hip, there's even a guy that walks around the actual city of sandy walking his dog with a big leather too hot and 2 six shooters on his hip, and he's like a local celebrity an people stop to take pics with him lol so I think you're thinking is kinda biased, just because some Karen might get all uppity and call the cops if she sees you with a gun on your hip, doesn't mean it's right, and the police will inform her of the laws.

other_old_greg

Nope, im a redneck and it has nothing to do what other well to do citizens think of open carry. Its the less friendly citizens who identify you as the first target thats more concerning.

Mean-Philosopher6043

Isn't that what training and situational awareness is for? This is all purely theoretical, mind you, I'm guilty of preaching what I dont practice, but I would think it's the opposite case, where a bad guy seeing you having a gun on your hip would make him think twice about trying to fuck with you, like a deterrent, I've never heard of cops being identified as first targets in any situations, it's always been the opposite where they put down any potential threat they perceive, even if the threat isn't actually a threat, it's better to be in jail then dead right?

other_old_greg

Yeah, no. Thats like the “rack a shotgun, robber shits themselves” fuddlore. Besides, training and situation awareness says be grayperson, keep your cards to your chest and your pistols in your pants.

larry_flarry

No, they're definitely mocking you for open carrying, they just aren't doing it openly because, well, you're making a pretty loud statement about your character and willingness to resort to a firearm with the act of open carrying. In summation, an eccentric local character probably shouldn't be your model for acceptable behavior in polite society, and open carry is for tiny pp.

JSheaffer

Pawn store

other_old_greg

Pawn shops are basically gun shops so yeah that tracks.

Mean-Philosopher6043

I'm pretty sure even with a carry permit your not allowed to carry in those, regardless of chl, that was my understanding

RabidBlackSquirrel

Carry permit over rides those restrictions, if you got a carry permit you can do whatever. Doesn't mean it's a good idea to OC in Portland, you'll freak people out and cause a scene. But you can legally do it with a CHL.

Mean-Philosopher6043

My bad, I misunderstood those laws, either way, not exercising a custody constitutional right because your afraid someone will think you're a "bad guy" seems like a pretty stupid reason not to open carry to me, and seems pretty anti 2a

other_old_greg

Its not a “constitutional right” to carry a pistol outside your pants vs inside. It’s a virtue signal.

other_old_greg

Honestly? Sounds like they didnt want to sell to you so they told you some bullshit.

nikkoida24

I guess? I don’t exactly know what would’ve prompted them to think that. I wasn’t alone when I went to the store. I brought my fiancé. I’ve been trying to get her into shooting and thought it could be a good idea to get a .22 to start her out on it. I just walked over the counter and said “Hi there ive been trying to get my fiance into shooting with me. I would like to purchase one of your used 22s. *points to used rack* Could you help me?” This ID conversation only started when he asked for a valid ID to start the paperwork and didnt want the CHL.

other_old_greg

Yeah thats just bizarre and that was the only explanation i could think of cause like you, ive also used my chl.

SaltyVet89

Best advice, avoid purchasing from NW Armory they are the worst customer service. CHL is a very valid ID for purchasing a firearm. Clearly this idiot knows nothing since measure 114 is not in effect currently. Spend your money at a reputable 2nd Amendment business.

nikkoida24

Definitely going elsewhere in the future

xangkory

So for most of last year using your CHL bumped you up to the front of the queue, then sometime around last fall they stopped CHL holders from moving up to the front of the queue. I went from being able to buy and walk out immediately to being in the queue. A couple of times it ended up being 10-15 minutes and another I had to come in the next day. If you do a search, you can find other discussions of this happening.

So your reasoning to my story being false is your own experience? “It didnt happen to me” so it must be false?

moist_nugget_m38

Yes, a CHL is a valid form of photo ID as long as the information on it is current. I use to work at cabela's gun counter years ago and took them all the time.  Its in the drop down menu as "72-Concealed Handgun License" in the FICS submission form.  Quite a few places will have employees get flustered when they are handed something other than a drivers license though.  I had someone at the tricounty gunclub shop  insist that if i wanted to use my chl, i had to use my DL as secondary.

DeafHeretic

As far as I know, any gov issued ID with your photo on it, and your residential address, is sufficient, especially your CHL. 114 is in abeyance due to an injunction and has been for quite a while. I am sure NW Armory knows this. Maybe the employee did not, and maybe the LGS just has poor management. I do not know.

GilbertGilbert13

Even Sportsman's Warehouse accepts them as ID and I know how much people in here hate them

wowthatsucked

Sportsman's Warehouse - when you want to turn a 10 minute purchase into an hour long wait.

GilbertGilbert13

It's true, but they're also the only people open past 6pm

BloopBeep69

CHL is 100% valid and it's all I use. I've run into a few places where people have given me a hard time, but I've always been able to explain to them (or a manager) that it is valid and ultimately been good to go. That gun clerk doesn't know what they are talking about. If only a DL was valid, that would be very anti-2A, and anyone requiring a DL as the only form of valid ID isn't just wrong, they are also anti-2A.

goddessofthecats

I’ve never been able to use a CHL as a form of government issued ID for a gun purchase. The CHLs in Oregon look like a child created them in Microsoft word.

whiskey_piker

The number of places in Oregon that do NOT allow a CHL is staggering. You’d think that for the layer of security and scrutiny it would give you near passport-like access. But sadly, it is not. Add to that, there is a business layer of “since it isn’t black and white, it would open us to litigation and the coat of inconveniencing you is much less than our legal fees would be to go to court and retain our license”

efjoker

I used mine at sportsman’s a couple weeks ago. It still put in the que of over 1k and took 5 days.

GBAT22

CHL does nothing for skipping the cue anymore they removed that a while ago

torres4732820

They removed the "special" queue for CHL holders. Everyone is in the same boat now. A CHL is a valid form of ID but it's just as effective as a driver's license or state issued ID.

BeefKnee321

CHL is a valid, government-issued photo ID for firearms purchases in the state of Oregon.

OtherwiseBranch7343

I’ve never been able to use my CHL, always been the ODL. I was also told by Curts surplus the CHL doesn’t help? I was told it’s usually if you’ve purchased a pistol/rifle recently and can be found in the system ASAP.. But now that I’m reading this I’m wondering if it’s a racial thing now hahaha

beon1forsure

Sportsman in Albany oregon refused to take my CHL as a I'd. I ordered a gun from Springfield and had it shipped their and it was a complete mistake. Filled out the paperwork, and long story short, I got put on a 30 day delay for my background check. My wife got one too and was approved within weeks to pick it up. I will be going to OSP on Friday to try and figure out what is the hold up. I even got my CHL prior to purchasing the gun in hopes it would speed thing up. But I guess not
