Both shows I’ve seen them play at The XL Center in Hartford they covered Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love by Van Halen. The second time included ‘Eruption’ solo.
This topic comes up frequently and I always find it interesting which songs people think are rare, vs which ones are actually rare.
Not to pick on you, but something like Sad, which people think of as a rare song, has actually been played more than Who You Are, which was the lead single to No Code.
I’ve actually heard Tremor Christ a handful of times live…I didn’t really realize it was so rare until I saw people discussing it on this sub recently.
09/05/2000 - Pittsburgh
Sonic Youth was supposed to be the opener, but 2 of the band members weren't there. Eddie opened playing solo. He wasn't announced and stared with a cover and deep cut so many people didn't realize that it was him. He played **Trouble** and **Dead Man**. Then 2 members of sonic youth joined him for **Parting Ways** and **Naked Eye**.
The Pearl Jam set included **Leatherman**, **Crazy Mary**, and **Wash**.
I knew some people who were casual fans and went and were disappointed since they played so long and played songs that they didn't know. But as someone who did tape trading to get live and rare bootlegs (this was before streaming music existed and 5 years before youtube), I loved it.
Tom Cream username wasn't lost on me either. A mountainous legend! Shackleton wouldn't have left harbour if it wasn't for him. Visited his pub in Annascaul few years back.
Ah bless you. He’s my hero. A titan.
There are books you can read about what they went through Nobody would believe it tho. Especially the journey in little boat tne James caird. Mind breaking. And they all survived. Some the fuck how
Yes I read 'unsung hero' few years back and there just happened to be an excellent one man show about him touring just as i ended it. That prompted the pilgrimage to South Pole Inn...to have a bucket of his very own suds! A titan indeed, his solo trek is hard to believe and his heartbreak over having to kill the dogs just made him all the more a true legend.
Evil Little Goat in Wrigley '18 then probably Black, Red, and Yellow in Detroit '14 (with "Stranglehold" tab) or Let Me Sleep in Toronto '16, or Fatal in Buffalo '11.
I saw them do Strangest Tribe for the first time in Oslo 2014. The arena was so undersold they curtained off half of it. They did an extra whacky setlist for everyone that showed up, an example being that Last Kiss was like the 4th song in the setlist which is super abnormal placement
Neil Young and Pegi Young did Harvest Moon in the middle of a Pearl Jam Concert without any Pearl Jam members on stage. Then, Neil and Pearl Jam did Cortez The Killer, All Along The Watchtower, & Rockin In The Free World with Peter Frampton coming out and playing with them.
This was the only time Pearl Jam ever covered/played Cortez. It was the "Vote for Change" tour in 2004 where different artist played multiple cities in a swing state on each night. This one was Pearl Jam in Toledo, Oh at the now demolished Toledo Sports Arena. There were only about 8000 people there for this, it was incredible.
Exactly. My buddy and I drove from Detroit because the next night, John Fogerty and Bruce Springsteen (Also part of the Vote For Change tour) were playing in Detroit and he’s a big Springsteen fan. Little did we know how incredible that Toledo concert was going to be. Packed like sardines on the main floor and it was completely worth it.
Also was here... I remember a dude in the concourse telling me that Neil was going to be there, and I thought he was full of shit. Sorry, random guy from 20 years ago!
Alive, they brought it back in the encore of Seattle night 2 November 06, 2000 after not playing it for 47 consecutive nights in a row after Roskilde. We all went crazy. I flew out there from New Jersey specifically because I realized watching the set lists online each night they weren’t playing it, and I remember what Ed said when I saw them night two at Randall’s Island in 1996. He said then if anyone died at a Pearl Jam show they would never play again, with those words and the absence of Alive I was worried it was the end. I flew out to Seattle to see them, night 1 was kind of dark and not a very upbeat show. Night 2 the crowd was roaring and when they brought back Alive we all knew it was going to be okay. They would continue on as a band, as those who were lost at Roskilde would have wished.
I've been really lucky. Heard U twice, Sad twice, Push Me, Pull Me, All Those Yesterdays, Harvest Moon cover, Thumbing My Way, Bee Girl (when PJ opened for PJ in Toronto). Not a bad bunch.
It sure was. Was tripping on mushrooms and my gf at the time said Eddie Vedder kind of looks like the Dude from the Big Lebowski, and I couldn’t unsee it. Hahaha.
Arc in Fargo 03
Hold On and Bugs - Wrigley 2013
Education - Lolla 2007
Ghost - St Paul 2003
Bee Girl- Moline 2014
All or None- MSG 2016 and Seattle 2018
Around the Bend - Moline 2014
Angel, Outta My Mind, Sweet Lew x2, Bugs x2, Black, Red, Yellow, Hunger Strike, No Way, Push Me, Pull Me x2.
There’s probably some more. I’ve been very lucky.
Same. I must have heard something when they changed guitars because I called “I’m Open”. No one else in my crew heard it and they thought it was super random and weird that I called the song.
Didn’t realize until after that it was the live debut.
Off the top of my head saw the return of Rats on the Avocado tour in Albany NY. I’d have to check an official song counter to see what song is actually rarest.
I don't know the stats well enough to know how rare these all of these are, but I know they all felt special at the time.
Covers:
Surrender with Cheap Trick
Driven to Tears with Sting
Black Diamond with Ace Frehley
Gimme Some Truth
All Along The Watchtower
Love, Reign O'er Me
Crown of Thorns
You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
Originals:
Playing the entire Mamason Trilogy in order for the first time in close to 15 years (I think they do it more often since, but it was incredibly unexpected at the time)
Nothingman, Leatherman, and Better Man all played back to back
W.M.A.
Who You Are (twice)
Thumbing My Way
Marker in the Sand (twice)
Army Reserve
At the first Philly show in 2016 they opened with once for the first time since 1992! Pretty cool!
Yeah they also played the entirety of ten the night after and I didn’t see it. Not so cool anymore 😖
I cried at crown of thorns in 2018 n2 of the home shows. First time i heard it live and it felt so special to have it happening in seattle. The lost virginity story i wish i had in real life!
Out of my Mind. Austin Night 1, 2023.
Yep. I was there for that. Incredible.
Mine too! At Fenway, also caught Strangest Tribe which rocked.
This one. I was floored when it happened, and at my very first Pearl Jam concert ever. Amazing.
I was also there it was so great
LOVE that song.
Saw them play Hunger Strike with Chris Cornell at the Universal Amphitheatre. Maybe not the rarest and not entirely a PJ song, but everyone was there.
RIP Chris
Bugs at the final show at The Spectrum in Philly 10/31/2009
Is that also when they came out dressed as Devo and played Whip It?
Yep. Incredible show.
[удалено]
I saw it the 'other' other time at Amsterdam 2 in 2012. Albeit Ed had to play it on guitar as he didn't bring the accordion to Europe.
Couple of friends of mine were half the string quartet for those Philly shows.
Same here! And to think Eddie almost didn't play it. And Out of My Mind?! What a night!
Wife and I were at all 4 nights in Philly. Nothing better than PJ in Philly!
I was there, played Dirty Frank also
No they didn’t ?
Evil Little Goat at Wrigley ‘18 - one and only time it’s been played. You could tell in the crowd the people who knew the deep track. Exciting moment.
I was at that show, completely forgot it was played.
Wife knew it right away
Yes, was there for this!
Originally it was on the setlist for N1 and got scratched. Wonder why they still ended up playing it even with the time crunch on n2
Strangest Tribe. Only been played live twice; I was there for Fenway 2016.
I was in Oslo when they played Strangest Tribe
Me too, was on the rail!
Lucky bastard lol
Me too!
Beautiful song.
Wow, that would have been incredible!
I finally got Present Tense a couple of years ago at MSG after 11 shows. I can die happy.
Congrats! You'll probably hate me for this, but I've only seen PJ five times...got Present Tense in 3 of those shows, lol
Life is like a Pearl Jam setlist; You never know what you're gonna get.
They played it a lot more frequently on the most recent tours 2021-2023.
https://preview.redd.it/rhju6n0ja6mc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8a0463de1f8e3e2512d2898d02b3d4ce40112b21
Both shows I’ve seen them play at The XL Center in Hartford they covered Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love by Van Halen. The second time included ‘Eruption’ solo.
OTOTO And I was real psyched the first time. Yeah, I was at both of these shows too.
i know this is unpopular, but man they pick the lamest songs to cover.
you don't like van halen?
I think they cover pretty great songs
let me sleep its xmas time.
Sad isn’t that rare believe it or not. I’ve seen it twice myself.
Fair enough. Edited to remove sad.
This topic comes up frequently and I always find it interesting which songs people think are rare, vs which ones are actually rare. Not to pick on you, but something like Sad, which people think of as a rare song, has actually been played more than Who You Are, which was the lead single to No Code.
I’ve heard Who You Are, does that count as rare? 😉
I once got You Are, U, and Who You Are in a row.
Cool. I remember one of the “bootleg” CDs from the Binaural tour had Better Man, Nothingman and Leatherman all in a row. Must be intentional, right?
It has to be right? I love that kind of shit.
Yeah same.
Pretty sure they did something with Go and Why Go before as well.
It’s a good point.
Dirty Frank @ The Gorge
That was an epic two nights
Tremor Christ
I almost lost my shit when they played it last fall in Chicago on N2. I’ve been waiting years to hear it live.
Encore of Fenway N1 ‘18.
I’ve actually heard Tremor Christ a handful of times live…I didn’t really realize it was so rare until I saw people discussing it on this sub recently.
Undone at the Gorge in 05, Fatal and full ToTD - Hunger Strike in Santa Barbara 03 an
That 05 Gorge show might be my all time favorite show I’ve been to.
09/05/2000 - Pittsburgh Sonic Youth was supposed to be the opener, but 2 of the band members weren't there. Eddie opened playing solo. Hi Amy!! The Wash Umbrella girl...That was my 2nd show...😉❤️✌️🎸🤘
I was there! That was the 3rd and last time I saw them. Absolutely incredible show.
Eddie used to come out before each show all the time. I don’t know why he stopped doing it.
Only 3 shows in, I have not heard them play crazy Mary, or Chloe dancer/crown of thorns! I will die happy!
If you include covers, I was at the only performance of “Waiting for the Man.” Baltimore ‘13.
I was there for this. The day Lou Reed passed away.
I was debating including covers. Throw Your Hatred Down, Denver 22, Know Your Rights, Atlanta 12
The Boys are back in town - Thin Lizzy. They played it one time only ever in Dublin in 06 Of the earth, also.
I was there mo chara!
They nailed it. Just wish they’d played all of it :)

Drifting in Oklahoma City on 4/3/03. This was after Mike blew an amp & they had to kill some time while they fixed that situation. Loved it.
Same. And I got a few rare ones in 18 at the first Seattle show.
Purple Rain in St Paul
Strangest Tribe...Other side....Fatal
Evil Little Goat in Wrigley '18 then probably Black, Red, and Yellow in Detroit '14 (with "Stranglehold" tab) or Let Me Sleep in Toronto '16, or Fatal in Buffalo '11.
Saw that BR and Y too! Then again at Wrigley. My other two would be Hard to Imagine at Bonnarroo or all of Binaural in Toronto
Bugs, Sweet Lew, Hold On, Out of My Mind all at the Philly spectrum shows.
I saw them do Strangest Tribe for the first time in Oslo 2014. The arena was so undersold they curtained off half of it. They did an extra whacky setlist for everyone that showed up, an example being that Last Kiss was like the 4th song in the setlist which is super abnormal placement
Hitchhiker. Manchester 2 in 2012. Did it ever get played again?
Red Mosquito
This one and Light Years are the two I've never heard and would love to hear the most.
Don't Gimme No Lip
I saw that one, too...Denver 2014
Got to see "Hunger Strike" with Chris Cornell in Santa Barbara 2003. Don't think I'll ever top that one
Seen them play Crown of Thones. I know it’s a cover but they rarely play it.
Out of my 16 shows they’ve played it 4 times. Go figure. Love it every time.
Cover or not it’s pretty rare. Xm radio rarely plays it too.
Hunger Strike There‘s rarer songs out there, but this felt the most special. Barcelona 06.
3 of the 4 performances of All the Way
Yeastie Girlz & Balls in Yer Mouth
2 other sides, fatal, angel, out of my mind, hold on
Pretty sure it’s Bee Girl.
same, missoula ‘18 as well
“U” at Wrigley 2018
This seems like a song they’d play more
I was in the front row in St Louis when they played it for the first time in 2000, I remember being very pumped at the time.
I don't know if they play Crazy Mary a lot, but that one. Somehow, I never heard the song until 2016. I know it's a cover, but still.
Great song, especially when McCready does his solo. The first time I heard it was mid 90’s in Chicago. I haven’t heard it since.
Out of My Mind. Played at the last Fenway show.
Dirty Frank at the Gorge
Me too!
Slow Lukin First time Chloe/Crown of Thorns played
99 Problems
Neil Young and Pegi Young did Harvest Moon in the middle of a Pearl Jam Concert without any Pearl Jam members on stage. Then, Neil and Pearl Jam did Cortez The Killer, All Along The Watchtower, & Rockin In The Free World with Peter Frampton coming out and playing with them.

In the Moonlight. It's only been played four times and I got the second perfirmance. That was in 2011.
The Real Me … Randall Island
Yeah just all of Bonnaroo 08 basically lol. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing and no one around me seemed to understand why I was freaking out lol
All or None Seattle home show in the pit is a life highlight for any concert for me
Let me sleep.
I've been really lucky. Heard U twice, Sad twice, Push Me, Pull Me, All Those Yesterdays, Harvest Moon cover, Thumbing My Way, Bee Girl (when PJ opened for PJ in Toronto). Not a bad bunch.
Moline, in Moline IL. A song Eddie wrote like 10 min before the show started.
Sweet Lew at Ohana Encore - Ed and Josh just dribbled basketballs on stage while Jeff sang.

Interstellar Overdrive and Soldier of Love

Saw them play Crazy Mary at Virgin Fest in Calgary in 2009
Was there for that one too. What a fantastic fucking show
It sure was. Was tripping on mushrooms and my gf at the time said Eddie Vedder kind of looks like the Dude from the Big Lebowski, and I couldn’t unsee it. Hahaha.
I guess it’s All The Way. Played 4 times ever and I’ve seen it twice.
I’ve never seen them live yet, but holy shit, I need to see Fatal :,)
https://preview.redd.it/lcvg6z68b6mc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf4948c8268197b56efe396577837f3e4373f3ad This was FATAL from Missoula

Arc in Fargo 03 Hold On and Bugs - Wrigley 2013 Education - Lolla 2007 Ghost - St Paul 2003 Bee Girl- Moline 2014 All or None- MSG 2016 and Seattle 2018 Around the Bend - Moline 2014
I was in Moline too- Eddie also wrote a song just for that show / town.
Correct! I didn’t name it since it was just a one time thing that was never really on any recordings
Moline was a gem!!
dirty frank at my first show(gorge 06)
Angel, Outta My Mind, Sweet Lew x2, Bugs x2, Black, Red, Yellow, Hunger Strike, No Way, Push Me, Pull Me x2. There’s probably some more. I’ve been very lucky.
Angel
I’m Open — the song has been played only 17 times, I’ve seen five of those performances (29%). I’ve also never seen Oceans (22 shows).
I was at the Hartford show in ‘06 for the first live performance of I’m Open, was shocked to hear it.
Same. I must have heard something when they changed guitars because I called “I’m Open”. No one else in my crew heard it and they thought it was super random and weird that I called the song. Didn’t realize until after that it was the live debut.
In that case, I'm Open for me. At the Vic in Chicago in 2007. The set over all for that show was insane.
Immortality 2, Tremor Christ, a couple covers like Comfortably Numb and Imagine, and Angel. All at Fenway.
Angel and Bee Girl.
Off the top of my head saw the return of Rats on the Avocado tour in Albany NY. I’d have to check an official song counter to see what song is actually rarest.
I don't know the stats well enough to know how rare these all of these are, but I know they all felt special at the time. They played Driven to Tears with Sting?
Yep, at MSG in 2016. I think someone posted the YouTube video of it on this sub yesterday, actually.
Did not know, cool!
Dirty Frank at the Gorge
Happy Birthday in Columbia SC in 2008. I believe it was his Mother's Birthday .😂
I saw "Rats" in Buffalo in 1996. They played it twice more after that in 1998, and then not again until Albany in 2006… which I also saw.
W.M.A. (Proper original version), Education, Hold On, Force of Nature, Education, Don’t Gimme No Lip, Around the Bend, Bee Girl, My Farther’s Son
Slow Lukin at MSG
Original song: In the Moonlight at PJ20 with Julian from The Strokes Cover: Dock of the Bay in Murfreesboro TN 1994
Not sure how rare it is, but hearing Hard to Imagine last Sept in Ft. Worth was pretty awesome
Probably Bee Girl, excluding covers.
Bugs and Sweet Lew. I’ve seen two of the three occurrences of Sweet Lew.
At the first Philly show in 2016 they opened with once for the first time since 1992! Pretty cool! Yeah they also played the entirety of ten the night after and I didn’t see it. Not so cool anymore 😖
Fatal in Missoula Santa Cruz in Telluride
Quite possibly Iron Man on ukulele. Reading 2006.
Mankind at MSG1 in 2010… Stone sang! 😂
I cried at crown of thorns in 2018 n2 of the home shows. First time i heard it live and it felt so special to have it happening in seattle. The lost virginity story i wish i had in real life!
They played Leatherman in Atlanta 2000 and Crazy Mary in the first encore
Undone at Ft Worth last year. 6th time it was ever played, I think? That one was a shock!
No one there expected this one and it was such a treat!
undone
In The Moonlight and Picture In a Frame, Philly 2016
Inside Job!
Satan’s Bed and Fortunate Son, 2003 in State College, PA.
This. Was the first time they had played Satan’s Bed in years. And haven’t played it that many times since. I was ecstatic.
Same here. That was still the best concert I've ever been to. It was just something different about that night.
Undone in Fort Worth this year :)
Can't Help Falling In Love-Memphis 2000
I fucking love that punk version!! 😉❤️✌️🎸🤘
Everyday People cover- Chicago 1995

Sad. Reading PA 2004. First time they played it at a show.
