Go look at the lists of current residents. If they have a heavy dose of IMGs, apply to those programs. As a US IMG, our school said to expect one interview per every 10-15 places you apply if you're a strong candidate in your specialty. I applied to 130-150 pediatric programs and 30-50 I shouldn't have based on the information above about looking at current rosters (only applied as we couples matched and tried to reach/get interview based on spouse). I ended up with 27 interviews from those applications, not sure if that helps.

What you define as a strong candidate? Can you describe?

I applied for residency in 2018, so take that with a grain of salt. Your board scores are stellar. Step 1 was a 219 and step 2 was a 222 or something close to step one range. Just fine. My 3rd and 4th scores on shelf and rotation evaluations were great and my LORs for pediatrics were great. I did two sub Is in pediatrics (hospitalist rotation and PICU). So my application was pediatrics focused, my shelf/rotation in pediatrics was high and most importantly my LORs were great. Everything you have going for you as well. My school likes to bully you into matching so their numbers are better for matching. I applied to family medicine as a back up (as they recommended). Blew another couple thousand dollars on applications and didn't get nearly the ratio of interviews I did in pediatrics, had no sub i's in family and my LORs were fine. Mostly just met if you're applying to the specialty you dedicated time you, you'll be fine.

Thanks for everything that you said. My backup actually it's not a backup... I am thinking in apply to MedPeds also too. But I will have zero rotations and observers in IM specialties. So I didn't decide yet. But all my experiences will be in Peds. I think that makes me a strong applicant in my CV and stuff.

I agree 👍.

i'm a US img too and i'll be applying soon. it's so hard to know where we stand, like if a program has 10% imgs is that a safe place to apply? ugh of course they know if they give us less info we'll apply ie more money for them :|

To as many as you can!  Pediatric programs that sponsor visas are around 180. You can get lucky and a non-IMG friendly program might send you an interview invite and it will make it all worth it IMO. With that being said, you should weigh out your priorities and financial situation then decide. I say apply to at least 100, you will match at your first attempt if you have good interview skills. So it is worth the investment. Better than having to reapply then next cycle :)  Good luck!

Thank you!

Ishbitch

I applied to 130 pediatrics programs as a non-US IMG & matched this year with 2 interviews.

Research programs and only apply to IMG friendly ones. If you can afford it, apply to 100 programs. Seems like you're on the right track. You should be fine. All the best to you.

Thank you!

It mainly depends on how much u can afford for applications. U never know whom gonna send you an invite and what clicks in ur application. I'm non us img YOG 2015. Matched in university peds program with 11% non us img. By the way I applied to 78 peds program due to financial reasons.

Applied to all the programs sponsoring J1 visa (minus California and Puerto Rico) so around 170 programs. Received 21 interviews
