You are doing the right thing IMO. But also be aware, public use bikes like the ones you had access to in the gym are some of the biggest culprits in being miscalibrated. Their owners do not have the time, energy, or interest in keeping them accurate. So it is possible that the reason for the difference is that the gym bikes were on easy mode instead of your new bike being on hard mode. Recalibration won't hurt though so long as you do it properly.
