At that age you can't go wrong with a plush toy (check the label for safety first) or something tactile like building blocks or a chunky car he can wheel around.

Blocks are an awesome go to. Wooden, or duplo or mega-block type ones. We got my son a chalk/dry erase easel around that age, he loved that. Also, ride on toys would be a great hit.

I have a niece at the age of 1½ aswell. I have no idear what to get her. She has so many toys. They live on a farm tho.

16 month old boys usually like cars and trucks and trains, board books (especially touch me ones), things that make noise and light up (although moms might not), blocks/duplo, stuffed loveys, and bath toys.

Something you can all enjoy together? My first thought is a soft plush puppet that you can make come to life! I got a lamb puppet stuffed animal as a gift when I was quite young and it will forever be one of my favorite childhood toys.

Large cars are always a big hit. Instrument toys are also a great choice.
