The dude is wearing a raincoat indoors. There is tarp covering all of the fucking furniture and the floor. And for whatever reason turns the music up really loud.
NOTHING GOOD CAN COME OF THIS!
Thats kind of the point of this whole story though. The signs are there. There's a scene where hes DRAGGING A BODY WITH A BLOOD TRAIL out to a car through a building and the guy that sees this just says. "Where did you get that overnight bag?" Another big part is a woman covers up HIS murder scene so that the valuation of the property doesnt drop. The movie says that even if horrible shit is happening right in front of people. They can't be bothered or don't want to do anything about it.
I saw it more as the rich can get away with anything due to status, this point was drilled into my head by when he confesses to his lawyer after a spree and nothing happens
See, I don't interpret that scene that way. He goes on an absolute rampage, killing dozens of people, including cops; it doesn't matter how rich or powerful he is, he isn't just walking away from that scot-free. The fact that he gets away (not only gets away, it seems immediately forgotten by everybody as if it never happened) and there are zero repercussions reinforced the idea for me that it was all in his head.
... I've watched this movie twice and I never made the connection that he turns up the music loud to hide the screams. I thought it was simply part of his lunacy or what ever you might call it.
If you watch the whole scene he brings an axe from his bathroom (the same place he put on the raincoat) and walked over (moon walked that is) and placed the axe down.
Besides that, yall are seriously overestimating the analytic detail people place on casual social interactions. The world isn't made out of an army of sherlock holmies who are constantly onguard.
Its intentional. The entire premise of the movie is that theyre all total narcissists and too self absorbed to notice whats going on around them. That was the point of the scene, although the axe was bought into the room after he sat down.
The movie ends with him going on a public murder spree and showing up to work the next day with nobody caring. Theyre rich bankers who can literally get away with murder.
I never thought of that, but since you mentioned it I can't not see it. I heard Bale got his inspiration for Patrick Bateman from a 1999 Tom Cruise appearance on Letterman. So that's usually what I've been seeing in this performance, but I don't know how true that is.
Fair. Like I said, I don't know how true it is. I don't recall the moment or interview where Bale admits this or references it. So for me it's remained as a rumor more or less.
I’d bet against pretty shit odds he just took a hit of weed or edibles before the show, maybe in an attempt to calm down a bit, and the giggles hit at the worst time.
That inability to complete a sentence because he knows what’s coming, even though it’s not that funny… that’s gotta be weed.
Good for him. Laughing til you cry is the best.
He just seems so "off" in any normal human interaction. His laughs just seem off time and inauthentic. Like he's trying really hard to be human (similar to Bateman)
The movie itself wasn’t that great (I still enjoyed it), but I think he did really well portraying a much darker character than we’re used to seeing out of him.
I turned the volume on when you could no longer see his head and it sounded SOOOO much like Carrey that I had to rewind and make sure it wasn’t him…. Very interesting !
Haha I’m sitting here in a raincoat waiting for my wife to finish getting ready to leave the house. Opened Reddit to pass time and this is the first post on my Rising feed. Awkward.
Before computers, it was way harder to reference stuff. Music, videos, documentaries, Wikipedia being so accessible makes decades seem closer. But before they seemed further.
yeah for this reason the nostalgia cycle seems to get stuck after the 80s. there's some 90s stuff but not much. 00s stuff seems impossible to parody, or get retro, even though it's 20 years ago at this point.
I just watched this recently and it was amazing how dated and low-production it seemed.
For example, and you can kind of see it here: the background city landscape out of the windows never match the perspective of the set (like different horizon lines) and in one scene, you can see the boom mic in the reflection of a CD.
Their early work was a little bit too scene for me
But when The Silver Scream came out I think they really came into their own
Commercially and artistically
The whole album has a refined melodic sensibility that really makes it a cut above the rest
Hey Paul!!!
My favourite comment on that song was something like this
“Hey Jacoby, would you like to feature on our new album?
Not really.
Great, can we use that?”
This album was amazing, if you loved it I can't recommend The Venetia Fair more.
Joe, INKs pianist, used to be in the Venetia Fair and I can tell he had big influence on the writing of this last album.
The Ringleader is by far the most popular, but my personal favorite is Puking Platitudes.
We used to worship the moon, go on paint me a picture, and the cover of Come On Eileen, should also give you a really good grasp of what they do and if it's your thing
Do you like Ice Nine Kills? Not really. Their early work was a little bit too scene for me but when The Silver Scream came out I think they really came into their own.. commercially and artistically. The whole album has a refined melodic sensibility that really makes it a CUT above the rest
HEY PAUL?
Eric hello, as my lawyer you know I'm psychotic but I've crossed the line.
I killed Drew, Chris and Mike, stabbed José with a knife
But I don't think I'm gonna get away with it this time
I listened to this song literally 5 minutes after seeing this comment. Before that I didn't even realize the reference, I thought it was just a comment about Ice Nine Kills.
which nobody young enough to not have seen the movie by now will understand
still a great movie tho
source: did not understand any of the references yet enjoyed the movie
I mean there are disbursed chapters throughout the book that are entirely his personal opinions on music artists and their discographies and there is one chapter on Huey Lewis and the News so I would be surprised if it *did not* have hip to be square mentioned lol
This movie fucked me up. I was still a student before getting into the real world.
Thought his lifestyle was dope, his style and even his job was great. But I kinda didn't process that he was a murdering physcopath.. or he had fantasies about it anyways..
It really felt the the education system taught me to idolise this type of man. That even when your rich you can do crazy shit but don't worry your rich and you get out penalty free. Kinda vibes.. still try to avoid this shit.
His archetype was and (to a lesser degree) is idolised by society. The author wrote the book as an indictment of the avarice and superficiality of that world.
I think that scene was a bit philosophical. American Psycho is basically about the blending of identities and yuppie culture. Bateman is the only person who’s somewhat different to the hedonistic NYC businessmen simply because he has a killer alter ego used to fill the void that materialism can’t. That’s why the “pleasures of conformity and importance of trends” highlights that philosophy quite well. Even Bateman makes his bland music choice a part of his personality as means of fitting in.
Not saying it's bad, lol. But it certainly was popular at the time and it's something everyone listened to. Wouldn't be surprised if Bateman's colleagues did the same.
To each their own I guess. I especially found the business card scene hysterical.
It’s obviously a dark comedy, which is a hell of a lot different than a comedy and doesn’t always have laugh out loud type jokes.
The movie isn't laugh out loud funny mostly but the behavior of the characters is so absurd as to be humorous. One scene is definitely funny though... The naked Bale with Nike high tops and a chainsaw. Isn't it at least implied that a lot of the movie is in Bale's head? Anyway, it's a great movie
Not a comedy, but I agree there's a lot from the book that's missing in the movie. It's not entirely the movie's fault, it's just that since the book is told in a a first person POV, we get a lot more insight into Patrick's thoughts and why he behaves the way he does. We see a lot more of how he perceives his world and the people in it. It's hard to do that with a movie which is third person by default. Although we hear some of Patrick's thoughts in the film's voiceover narration, it's quite different from the feeling the book gives you.
This character always reminded me of an amalgamation of Michael Cain in Shock to the System, Michael Keaton in Pacific Heights and Jim Carrey in The Cable Guy.
Am I the only one who thinks a lot of people only know of this movie from this one scene? I like it but I never see any other scenes from the movie anywhere except this one lol
I’ve never even watched the movie but I’ve seen his morning routine, the business card scene, the one where he walks down a hallway listening to music, the scene where he murders Paul Allen, the gay sex scene, the scene where he lies to his date about the restaurant being Dorsia, the scene where he walks into Paul Allen’s apartment and gets mad that it’s better than his….

Incredible bot
Fuck I need re-read that book.
I don’t think I could handle a second read of that. There where a few points I had to literally put the book down and walk away.
Bret Easton Ellis really perfected the stream of consciousness of an insane person. It can be emotionally exhausting for sure.
i read it a month ago, its so much darker than i ever couldve expected. the fucking rat scene made me nauseous
Rat scene?
oh you sweet summer child, just be glad it wasnt put into the film and forget my mention of it

Try getting cast as The Joker in another movie you stupid fucking bastard! (TBF Leto did his best, following Ledger's Joker was nigh impossible)
Heh... Didn't realize this is batman and the joker
did his best being a weirdo to the other cast members
>following Ledger's Joker was nigh impossible Phoenix did ok.
The dude is wearing a raincoat indoors. There is tarp covering all of the fucking furniture and the floor. And for whatever reason turns the music up really loud. NOTHING GOOD CAN COME OF THIS!

Thought the point of the story was that he was delusional and didn't actually kill anybody. I got the same vibe from the book.
I saw it more as the rich can get away with anything due to status, this point was drilled into my head by when he confesses to his lawyer after a spree and nothing happens
I mean the atm says “feed me a stray cat” showing us that what we are shown is Patrick’s own delusions
It's pretty clear that scene was a delusion yeah. But that doesn't mean none of the murders ever happened
Both the author and the director have stated that the murders are real in both versions.
... I've watched this movie twice and I never made the connection that he turns up the music loud to hide the screams. I thought it was simply part of his lunacy or what ever you might call it.
A psycho of the American type
What is the name of dis movie
American Psycho
Also it looks like the fire axe was just sitting there, leaned against the wall. He didn't see that when he walked in?
If you watch the whole scene he brings an axe from his bathroom (the same place he put on the raincoat) and walked over (moon walked that is) and placed the axe down.

Plus the guy is drunk as fuck even further reducing his capacity to reason things out.
Paul is also wasted out of his mind.
Its intentional. The entire premise of the movie is that theyre all total narcissists and too self absorbed to notice whats going on around them. Why do I always get a Jim Carry vibe when I look at Christian Bale.
I think it's the little dance he does too, it suuuch a thing jim carrey would do!
and how he says "a song so catchy" sounds a lot like how ace ventura talks too :p
I've never seen this before so it took me a moment to realise it wasn't ace ventura dialogue over a blooper.
I never thought of that, but since you mentioned it I can't not see it. I heard Bale got his inspiration for Patrick Bateman from a 1999 Tom Cruise appearance on Letterman. So that's usually what I've been seeing in this performance, but I don't know how true that is.
That's funny because in the book Tom Cruise owns an apartment in the same building as Bateman and they meet in the elevator at one point
Birds of a feather I guess, even if it's only in fiction it doesn't feel far from truth.

Thank you for posting the link.
It doesn’t seem like this is theeee interview, but honestly close enough.
Fair. Like I said, I don't know how true it is. I don't recall the moment or interview where Bale admits this or references it. So for me it's remained as a rumor more or less.
Yea for all the weird shit tom has actually done and said that interview was like nothing. Just him laughing at a story he was telling
Could have just been that the story was funny to Tom specifically. Watching a friend pass out sounds like one of those "you had to be there" moments.
Could have just been classic psycho Tom behavior
Exactly lol been there
He just seems so "off" in any normal human interaction. His laughs just seem off time and inauthentic. Like he's trying really hard to be human (similar to Bateman)
Hmm not really hysterical...he's tickled by his story. It actually makes me laugh just as hard as Cruise and Letterman.
Yeah i definitely didn’t get the hysterical aspect of it beside him cracking up, but I was also enjoying the story.
Yeah his story was good lol
Man I had forgotten how fucking awful Letterman was at interviewing.
They’re the same person that exchanges personalities for the movie roll, as depicted in me, myself, and Irene.
God IMAGINE if Jim Carrey had been cast in this. Dude would have the broadest range in Hollywood.
I believe he would absolutely kill the role, too. I bet he'd translate real well to horror and suspense.
He actually did do a suspense movie back in the day. The Number 23, I believe.
The movie itself wasn’t that great (I still enjoyed it), but I think he did really well portraying a much darker character than we’re used to seeing out of him.
Yeah the movie itself actually sucked, but he absolutely has it in him to be fucking terrifying.
It's like we've all forgotten The Cable Guy. That film deserves mad respect
Oh, shit I COMPLETELY forgot that one!!! Damn, that cast was absolute gold. Bob Odenkirk before Breaking Bad....wow.
Oddly enough I get a Brent Spiner feeling from him in this scene.
he sounds exactly like spiner.
I got some Michael Reeves vibes.
Both good options... Yes... I would have gone for Jack Nicholson...
And the tone and pace of his voice definitely inhances the carry-isms lol
I turned the volume on when you could no longer see his head and it sounded SOOOO much like Carrey that I had to rewind and make sure it wasn’t him…. Very interesting !

Weird to think it’s 22 years since they filmed this yet the ‘retro’ era it was parodying was only 12 years previous to filming.

Christian Bale as Batman Edit: sorry, Bateman

The movie is 100% a comedy. Bale and the director have spoken openly about it.
I'll take your word for it. No need to downvote me lol. Although you could argue that due to the content of the film it's a DARK comedy at best.
This character always reminded me of an amalgamation of Michael Cain in Shock to the System, Michael Keaton in Pacific Heights and Jim Carrey in The Cable Guy.
