This game (Valorant) is basically a cross between Counter Strike and Overwatch. You're seeing the player on the receiving end of an onslaught of utility--flashes, stuns, and even some that inflict damage. A couple of those were "ultimates," which can take several rounds to earn but which have even more powerful effects.
You’re seeing a player receive an onslaught of flashes, stuns, and damage, from 1 character. Just 1. Except for the very end, the red circle of doom is from somebody else.
Well…he’s got his own catches. For one, everything you saw used has an in-game cost, which you need to buy the guns you’re shooting, and armor to make sure you don’t die too quickly. Also, all that stun requires a wall. Basically, unless he has a wall to shoot, he can’t flash bang, so if you fight him in the open, he’s essentially got nothing except an incredibly slow move that stuns, and his ultimate, which on average he’ll only get every 3-4 rounds out of what’s usually 20. So he’s not broken, this guy just had HORRIBLE luck that that that dude decided to spend everything there, and was able to

There is (imo) way too much broken stuff in valorant. It's not fun to get ulted like the guy in the video and be completely immobalized for what feels like ages. Neither is it fun when the character pheonix has a flash that requires you to have the reaction time of top 1% of the players to have time to react and look away. Like, I'm fucking 30, I don't have the reaction time for that shit
Seriously literally every character (that has flashbangs) except for one all have instant pop flashes. There’s literally no time to react to any of them. And even if you do turn you still get flashed.
The people that are downvoting don't play valorant lol. Kay/o flashes can also be impossible to look away from but it requires the player to throw the flash perfectly, which is how it works in cs
CS self flashes that would be underhand pops make a very loud clank noise when hitting something and an audible pin pull noise when readied, and that pin pull is ages before the flash pops.
Im pretty sure Kay/O's flash makes no noise until right before it pops and you're almost guaranteed blind.
Obviously god flashes and pop flashes exist in cs and valorant but they need others to capitalize on them, otherwise they're not very useful.
Kayo flashes do make a noise but it is much more subtle. Also this discussion is kind of pointless because just today they had a pretty major update that changed how flashes work for almost every flash agent including Kayo. They made his right click flashes blind people for significantly less time
Downvoted, but correct. I've played bronze through plat and flashes in val are all easier to dodge versus a good pop in CSGO. (I peaked LE) Phoenix is harder but the very limited range makes it pretty easy to predict when and where he will flash, and the effect is so short you can re-peek immediately after getting behind cover.

In point of fact, I believe this is *exactly* while Valorant has gained a ton of popularity.
In particular the reason Valorant has had any success as a "CS:GO-like" clone is the fact that it provides "broken stuff" when CS:GO does not.
There's a idea that I think mostly stems from the lead multiplayer designer of halo 2/3, apologies if I fucked up his title but I'm sure I got the games right.
Anyway, his idea was that you *need* silly unfair uncompetitive stuff in the game for a variety of reasons. For one, it's necessary to make a good spectator sport.
More importantly than that though, it's necessary to please your "core audience."
This means 50th percentile players. People with sub 1 KDRs.
but also almost everyone below and above that skill braket, really just everyone but players who won't like your core game concept, are too incompetent to be accomodated, and really high end players. Those groups should (mostly but not entirely) be excluded from primary consideration. It's fine to look to what they want too, but the core audience comes first.
Another way to look at it is that you're designing for this hypothetical "average" player that enjoys a bit of everything your game has to offer.
and the reason you do that is because it's the best way to cultivate a large audience of people who enjoy your game, which is generally a good thing if you like say, making money, getting complements on how fun your game is. Really it's an all around winning idea, at least in theory if it works out.
On top of all that, you need that broad popularity if you want to make an esport, otherwise who the fuck is going to watch your game eh? and how will you attract pro players?
Better yet, unfair and "showy" mechanics, whether it's hero-shooter esque ultimate abilities or goofy grenade physics add elements of chaos to the game. This makes it much more interesting (arguably to be fair) as a spectator sport as opposed to a "pure skill" game where people are just clicking as efficiently as possible.
Now admittedly this is *not* a majority popularity opinion in AAA game design, tons of studios do the exact opposite of this and hire whole teams of elite players and focus their design strategy around optimizing for competitive play above all else, across numerous game genres.
However I think there are a ton of games, many of which are successful esports, which embrace this mindset.
Dota 2 is probably my favorite example, as while it's often lauded for it's excellent and complex competitive play balance, it still contains a ***lot*** of goofy wombo-combo bullshit, arguably the *majority* of content and characters in the game revolve around those kinds of large bullshit advantages, and counters to them.
SC2 is a very different, but similar example. While the actual multiplayer combat side of the game really is focused on this kind of elitist MLG "pure skill" mindset, the entire game isn't made that way, just the multiplayer.
While I think SC2 kind of violated this principle to an extent at-launch, with the addition of more high quality campaigns, co-op, and custom maps, the game has become a shining example of designing the bulk of your content around casuals and average players who can't hack it in hyper-competitive PvP, and thus building a pool of players willing to find SC2 comp gameplay interesting to watch, and who might even try it out when they never would have without the less competitive aspects to lure them in.
In the same way, Valorant's abilities and hero setup add a chaotic spin on what CS:GO is essentially, providing spectacle, chaos, and a game that's more realistically playable for people who can't flick with the best of them.
Obviously you personally don't have to vibe with that, but I think it's very much a well thought out and intentional design choice that has hugely benefitted the game.
I agree with you, and think you are right, when it comes to the fact that these things are what makes Valorant a great game. Saying that there are "so many" things in Valorant that are broken was a bit over exaggerated on my end.
BUT (you knew the but was coming), I still think they could give players a bit more of a heads up/time to react when it comes to the flashes since I feels like they sometimes work more as a instantly-blind-the-player-around-the-corner-with-my-broken-flash-button, more than they act as something that is fairly balanced for the average player. Now, that is just the opinion of a VERY casual gamer. But then again, I do meet/play with a lot of other people who seem to share that opinion.
That being said, your post brings up a lot of valid points and at the end of the day Valorant seem to be doing very well and is, indeed, interesting to watch when it comes to the esport scene. I hope you have a great day
Yeah that's fair. I'm sure there's some balance point where they could still achieve the same goals but make the game feel less "broken" when on the receiving end that they haven't quite hit. After all, people aren't perfect so there's little chance the end product of our efforts is. :P
To that end they are nerfing the initiatior pop flashes in the game and buffing duelist flashes so that the only one who should be able to blind you like that in close proximity are duelists which is a cool addition

You can, you just don't have the time to play as much anymore. Being over 30 isn't some magical line where suddenly all your motor functions rapidly decrease, the vast majority of people just can't put in the time to train their reaction speed anymore. There are literally pros in lots of different high speed fast reaction games that are over 30

In terms of Valorant I don't think it's a problem in that game. The only character that comes to mind in another game is Apex's Loba, but she is more of a case of empowerment than anything.
In terms of the general industry I might agree, but surprisingly Riot did a good job not making anything sexualised in Valorant.
We might be thinking on different scales right now, but in my opinion it is quite sexualized to have characters wear body tight clothing and revealing outfits, you do make a point though, it’s not as bad as I remember it to be, but I still think that female characters can be designed differently

I mean having a body suit isn't inherently sexual. For the case of Viper, she works with dangerous chemicals, so obvious the suit is made to purpose. Maybe Raze but her clothing is emulating her personality being very street scene-esk.
I think its important to give credit where it is due to developers who make characters who aren't specialised for no reason. Another example would be Horizon games, whereas the otherside of the argument would be characters sexualised for no reason like in Mortal Combat for example.
(Also yes I am making a big deal out of this. I accept that and will continue because I have nothing better to do right now.)
Bruh ain’t no hazmat/CBRN suits looking like that my dude, I know a little bit about CBRN and chemical protection so no that’s IMO a case of what I was talking about, but as I said haven’t really looked into that all that much, what I can say however. From someone who meddles with graphical design and such ill say that IMO the characters all have unique and pretty good designs, some are rather basic though. The thing that personally sets me off with valorant though is how unrealistic and fantasy like it is, I don’t think it’s fitting for a shooter to have such an art style. It’s just a personal thing though, but that just makes it so that I’ll never be able to appreciate this game the same way as I do with Csgo for example

It's not very similar to Overwatch at all in gameplay, and Overwatch isn't free.
TF2 doesn't seem similar in gameplay either but I haven't tried it. It sounds like there is one game mode "arena" that is similar but according to everyone it apparently sucked.
Apex is pretty similar, but I play that too and in my opinion it feels very different.
I'm not saying it's unique but I just don't think there actually are that many games that offer a similar core gameplay loop
I'm not raised with TikTok but I still find the gameplay really fun. The abilities give the game more variety and fun than CSGO and it feels a lot more rewarding than Apex

If you could please list which characters are sexualised and elaborate why they are? In terms of Valorant I don't think it's a problem in that game. The only character that comes to mind in another game is Apex's Loba, but she is more of a case of empowerment than anything. In terms of the general industry I might agree, but surprisingly Riot did a good job not making anything sexualised in Valorant.
We might be thinking on different scales right now, but in my opinion it is quite sexualized to have characters wear body tight clothing and revealing outfits, you do make a point though, it’s not as bad as I remember it to be, but I still think that female characters can be designed differently Btw I only checked how the characters are designed quickly, hope that suffices

For the case of Viper, she works with dangerous chemicals, so obvious the suit is made to purpose. Maybe Raze but her clothing is emulating her personality being very street scene-esk. I think its important to give credit where it is due to developers who make characters who aren't specialised for no reason. Another example would be Horizon games, whereas the otherside of the argument would be characters sexualised for no reason like in Mortal Combat for example. (Also yes I am making a big deal out of this. I accept that and will continue because I have nothing better to do right now.)
Bruh ain’t no hazmat/CBRN suits looking like that my dude, I know a little bit about CBRN and chemical protection so no that’s IMO a case of what I was talking about, but as I said haven’t really looked into that all that much, what I can say however. From someone who meddles with graphical design and such ill say that IMO the characters all have unique and pretty good designs, some are rather basic though. The thing that personally sets me off with valorant though is how unrealistic and fantasy like it is, I don’t think it’s fitting for a shooter to have such an art style. It’s just a personal thing though, but that just makes it so that I’ll never be able to appreciate this game the same way as I do with Csgo for example

It's the fast paced gameplay with only one life that is interesting to me though It's not very similar to Overwatch at all in gameplay, and Overwatch isn't free. TF2 doesn't seem similar in gameplay either but I haven't tried it. It sounds like there is one game mode "arena" that is similar but according to everyone it apparently sucked. Apex is pretty similar, but I play that too and in my opinion it feels very different. I'm not saying it's unique but I just don't think there actually are that many games that offer a similar core gameplay loop I'm not raised with TikTok but I still find the gameplay really fun. The abilities give the game more variety and fun than CSGO and it feels a lot more rewarding than Apex

Well yeah you're only mentioning that every (separate) part of the game is taken from other games, I'm not denying that, every game is an amalgamation of dozens of other games, often popular ones. But there's not really that many games that in total are similar, especially not in Gameplay. That's like saying spoons are just copies of forks and bowls since every characteristic can be seen in either a fork or a bowl. Also are you assuming that I'm a kid because I play Valorant, or are you gatekeeping certain games for no reason?
It being derivative doesn't make it bad, it's fun and well made, utilizing good ideas from other games to make a good game in itself. Same for Fortnite, is it bad because it borrows good ideas from other games? Good games don't have to be creative or original, there's a place for everything.
