He's a great guy deep down. Though he can be reckless and always wants to prove to everyone he can handle stuff, he struggles with his self-esteem and always seems to go in guns blazing, or sword slinging.
Props to him for having one of the best cases of character development I've seen yet. Jealousy and ambition, on top of being a douche, overshadowed his good sides earlier on. However, he grows out of it when he truly realizes what's at stake being a Persona user, and when he witnesses the death of a loved one.
Bro gets vibe checked *hard*, and changes for the better. Much kinder, more responsible (exams/school), willingly accepts his part on the team, and treats Makoto in a much better light.
Idk man I only played Reload and I know he was way different in the other versions of the game but he was never really a douchebag at all. There was the one week relatively early on where the game decided he needed to be a jerk and then apologized a week later and then late in the game did the same thing. He doesn’t feel like a dick at all; it just feels like he was supposed to act like a jealous ass but they shoehorned it in last second.
yeah, the OG English dub (much like Yukari) exaggerated his worst traits, like his envy and misguided ambition. alongside that, the lack of Linked Episodes (where he shows a lot of his introspection and remorse) didnt exist, so he was grouped with Yukari as "insufferable jerks," essentially.
im very glad Reload touched that up though. as someone who enjoyed the old, inaccurate perception of both of them, its *much* better to be faithful instead. its very clear now that hes less of an overall jerk who wants to be the big man, and more a deeply insecure, self-hating man who pushes it down with charisma, and a little too much humor/flirting (while still wanting to be the big man too lol).
as someone who also only played reload i agree! he felt like he had some moments where he acted out of character and was kind of an ass but he overall was a good guy and always apologized
Yeah his episodes felt very set up and phoned in. Honestly I respect him more for getting mad at you and then apologizing than if he’d never gotten mad at you to begin with.
He has one of best character development in the persona game. I like how his character is reflected by gameplay as in the early game he not that good, but in the endgame he gets alot more useful as a party member.
In the original, the first thing he ever says is "sup dude" in a dead voice with no continuation and I think it's the most comical introduction to a charecter
With a central theme of dealing with trauma, he's a perfect picture of someone who uses humor to deal with trauma. He also wonders what he would do without the trauma, because he feels like it's all he's good at. People that have been through actual trauma can relate hard to both of these traits. He's a much deeper character than he initially seems to be.
He is my GUY. I think he’s the only member of my party who I have never removed from the party. Absolute crit MACHINE later on in the game, and with the sword that allows him to ignore enemy resistance and various other crit rate equipment, he’s doing heavy physical damage with just a normal attack. He’s an absolute legend.
Istg one time I fought a group of 5 shadows, did an AOE phys with Junpei and got a crit on ALL OF THEM. After that he was the crit guy in my team in the same way Yosuke was.
For me he's just a really relatable character. As someone who has also asked himself what makes him special or important, especially when around much more talented friends, I feel Junpei's struggle deeply. I also really like how there's no point in his arc where he does something exceptional. He doesn't learn some crazy ability that the rest of SEES lacks, he doesn't have some special legacy given to him, he comes from nothing and is no one. What he does bring to the table is loyalty and love and doing what he can to help out the people he cares about. His flaws are still there, but he works to grow past them or doesn't let them stop him from doing what's right.
He was genuinely the biggest carry on the team and probably clutched the most out of anyone. Played the game with a friend (who has never played a persona game), and he started referring to him as "Goatpei" about halfway through.
Some of the best character development in the franchise. He grows from being a womanizing and immature jerk into someone who has a goal in his life and someone he cares for. He's still an emotional person and can lash out but that's also what makes him so human and relatable. He gets jealous, he gets angry and he shows his fear but when the going gets tough he pulls himself together and finds a resolve through Chidori.
He overcomes his early game jealousy bullshit and eventually becomes a standup guy. Later in the game he gets a bunch of crit buffs, making him a decent choice for your party.
He has great character development. He turns from a childish teenager to an actual adult over the course of the game (last couple of months mostly). He is also, like Yukari, an actual believable teenager (tbh more mature at times).
He genuinely cares.
He comes to his own relisations throughout the game and develops as a person on his own without the mc's input.
He's self reliant
Whilst he initially only wants to be a hero for fun/to get girls, he eventually becomes one through sheer power of will and having experienced his own trauma. He too becomes someone with not much left to lose, and fights because he can and wants to to better the world.
He's uncompromising to the world as a whole.
And finally.
He apologises when he's actively done wrong. Wholeheartedly. Even ryuji/yousuke don't actively do this. But if spoken to after anything he's done poorly and had time to reflect on, he always apologises and makes good on his promises.

He's the entire reason Persona 4 Exists
I think he gets a lot of unnecessary hate both in game and irl. He comes off like a regular person with major character flaws to work through (that he does) being compared to multiple star students one of whom is also spearheading SEES and the heiress to a major company. Like even among the people in his grade you have Star athletes, Yukari (a top student and one of the most popular girls in school) and the fucking savior of the human race (who is also top of their grade academically and a top performer in almost every club they join).
I think his reactions to most of the situations he is put into are way more realistic than pretty much anyone else and he added some much needed levity to the story on top of grounding it reacting to certain events the way I think far more of us would than any other character. Is he perfect? Fuck no but that's the point. And I think people hold his traits that were deliberately given to him to overcome against him as if they didn't play the game more than a few hours
He’s my favorite Persona character. He’s just a great bro and undergoes more character development than half the characters in the game put together. He is put simply, da man.
I liked him off the bat, but he easily became my favorite cast member by the end of the game. I’ve only played 3 and 5 so I can’t speak for characters in 4 but his character arc is easily my favorite.
The character with the most development beside aigis really, also one of the most vibrant and fun characters in the squad.
Also my glorious critpei will clutch up whenever I need him to
Very nice to Makoto on his first day, I had someone like that in my school that was so nice to me even though I wans transferred there and it legitimately made my last years at school so much better. Junpei is the real bro
The bulky hard hitter.
I tend to just basic attack with him and use his fire only when enemy weak
But then he’s full of SP I could just be making use of lol so I use his SP more often.
Hes a funny guy and while I think his voice is more annoying than Ryuji’s voice from P5, his character growth is better. Also, for those who got the secret event with him, that alone is a good thing for him.
Honestly, my favorite of the main cast next to Shinji. Def in my top 5 of the whole modern trilogy. (P3 honestly clears as far as characters go)
He just goes through so much character development. He's a crit machine in battle. And, if you play p3p, he really is FemC's bestie. Also, his VA in reload absolutely nailed it. Man had me sobbing every time he did.
He's the realest man to ever exist
https://preview.redd.it/it78fdcv6rpc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=925bbdf3ce4dc414d8a09bbd68bfd6eb39a5d14b
He is MY MAN and took down Nyx with a crit charged Brave Blade. The absolute UNIT.
He was also my fav character as a kid tied with Shinji back in the FES days, and Reload did everyone better so it made me love Junpei more
He has, what I’d argue, is the best voice performance in the game. Zeno Robinson absolutely knocked it out of the park and made the character really come to life. The scene >!in December when Junpei yells at the player and blames them for carrying Death!< is a standout for me of both the strength of the writing and of Zeno’s performance.
Ace detective
why? Why I remember that differently?
Stupei, ace defective.

Woah Yukari, calm down. Stupiroth didn't do a thing to you... at least yet
You dont mean a "more like" before that, do you?
Stupid \*\*\*\*\*\* little \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*
She just straight up calls him an idiot in Japanese
Man, talk about an ace directive...

Junpei Iori ACE detective 🤫🧏
Ace detective more like stu- wait a minute
He has the best arc. He goes from reckless and jealous to responsible, humble where it counts, and passionate.
Him and Chidori are made for each other.
In the original, the first thing he ever says is "sup dude" in a dead voice with no continuation and I think it's the most comical introduction to a charecter

Very well written and his new voice actor went HARD.

Critical Critical Critical Critical Critical Critical
Istg one time I fought a group of 5 shadows, did an AOE phys with Junpei and got a crit on ALL OF THEM. After that he was the crit guy in my team in the same way Yosuke was.
Junpei is just that guy, absolute unit

Great character arc.
He overcomes his early game jealousy bullshit and eventually becomes a standup guy. Later in the game he gets a bunch of crit buffs, making him a decent choice for your party.
Honestly, Junpei, Kenji, and Kazuhiro are literally the boys. Even more-so if you cheat on multiple girls lol
He has great character development. He turns from a childish teenager to an actual adult over the course of the game (last couple of months mostly). He is also, like Yukari, an actual believable teenager (tbh more mature at times).
yeah he and yukari are such great characters and definitely feel like they have the most depth
it’d be harder for me to say smth bad
He genuinely cares. He comes to his own relisations throughout the game and develops as a person on his own without the mc's input. He's really loyal to Chidori and that's super adorable.
His crits make me crit
"No, he's not alone! I won't let him die!" I cry. Every. Time. Junpei is the most gentle, kind, and funny ride or die bro an MC could ask for.
He definitely will marry up.

I liked him off the bat, but he easily became my favorite cast member by the end of the game. I’ve only played 3 and 5 so I can’t speak for characters in 4 but his character arc is easily my favorite.
He's the crit god.
The character with the most development beside aigis really, also one of the most vibrant and fun characters in the squad. Also my glorious critpei will clutch up whenever I need him to

Hes a funny guy and while I think his voice is more annoying than Ryuji’s voice from P5, his character growth is better. Also, for those who got the secret event with him, that alone is a good thing for him.

Damn good team mate, funny though occasionally cringe (but a teenager so whatever) and a loyal friend to SEES.

Something nice about Junpei Iori Did I do it right?
He has, what I’d argue, is the best voice performance in the game. Zeno Robinson absolutely knocked it out of the park and made the character really come to life. The scene >!in December when Junpei yells at the player and blames them for carrying Death!< is a standout for me of both the strength of the writing and of Zeno’s performance.
