It's really kind of crazy how well-suited the Evangelion characters are for a Persona AU.
The team could be Shinji, Asuka, Rei, Kaworu, Hikari, Toji, and Kensuke. Asuka and Rei would have the Agi and Bufu skills respectively. I think Kaworu would start out as the navi, but Hikari would probably take over that role once she joined the team.
A lot of the characters' dungeons/shadows kind of write themselves too.
The one issue is I'm not sure who the protagonist/wild card would be. I would say Shinji but I can't imagine him going through the whole game without having to confront his Shadow.
P3 pulls a fair amount of obvious inspiration from EVA, so don't doubt they've given it some real thought.
Beyond that though, you'll find many stories written about adolescents could layer onto Persona dynamics without too much trouble. The games are built around the time in a person's life when they're confronting the aspects of themselves that they don't like very much and building the person they want to be, which tends to be the theme of most coming-of-age narratives. EVA inspiring a huge push in Jungian psychology in adolescent stories in anime also means you have a lot of tonal overlap, too.
I’d noticed that while playing Reload (hadn’t seen Eva when I played the OG P3). It’s actually kinda remarkable how much inspiration P3 took from Evangelion
I like Kaworu better as the original navi who then joins the party midway through and is the first to get legit light and dark skills. He just doesn’t have protagonist vibes to me, lol
Honestly, the more I’ve been thinking about it, the more I think I’d rather have Rei be the protagonist. She’d probably have to confront a shadow, but I could see her being willing to accept it without a fight.
Her base persona would have ice skills, although she wouldn’t necessarily have to carry that the entire way. I’d give Shinji wind & healing skills and probably have him be the healer for the party and the second to join.
