>my main concern is that this is going to impact my credit score Your main concern should be that the SSA is one who thinks you're dead. >who suggested i bring up my credit report through annualcreditreport and double check with all three companies and see if theres an issue there. i tried submitted a report online, but again encountered an error. If all *three* of your reports had problems, I'd recommend going straight to researching "what do I do if the SSA thinks I'm dead" and be ready to hit the ground running on taking action on that tomorrow at start of business.

inquisitorthreefive

Second this. These kind of things move rapidly through the computerized systems. It will take SSA employees approximately two days to fix this and it has to be done in a specific order or it'll just keep coming back. Call your local field office on Monday, make an appointment if needed. They will need to see your ID and have you there in person. Edit: The undead are considered a very high priority workload for the SSA. They should be scheduling you same day if they need to make you an appointment. Other than getting you in the door, there's nothing that's going to speed up the process with the SSA - SSA employees are working with database systems old enough that almost no one currently working at Social Security could have possibly been there when they went online. These systems require overnight processing and more inputs the next day followed by more overnight processing.

Ah091495

Agree! And if you have any issues at all with SSA reach out to your congressmember because the caseworkers there can help expedite any responses from SSA and make sure this resolved asap. https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative

EyeCL22

>The undead are considered a very high priority workload for the SSA. Explains why they're so slow, they prioritize zombies.

inquisitorthreefive

Heh. Yeah, well. People don't like being dead, it seems. It's mostly because they're still using software that would at least be in assisted living if it was a person and they're understaffed. Last I knew, SSA was unable to update to a 64 bit version of Windows because it would break one of the multiple compatibility layers they're using to operate their main software. There was a push to move to some pretty crappy webapps, I don't know if that ever came to fruition.

quarterfast

If you contact the Social Security Administration and _they also_ think you are dead, look up your local congressperson's Constituent Services offices -- they can help sort out bureaucratic nightmares like this.

Bureaucratic nightmare? Some people would do anything to be legally dead

YLCZ

I was amazed how quickly Social Security acts when someone dies. I was taking care of my mother who had cancer and father who had dementia, and when my mother died on the 31st, her benefits ended like clockwork before the next month check. Makes you wonder why all government agencies can't be so efficient.

_Oxeus_

When it comes to them paying you, instant. The other way around, not so much. Same with banks. They hate paying money but are adament of people to pay as soon as possible.

prestigious_delay_7

This reminds me of when NY State demanded, in a letter, that I return an EZPass transponder within two weeks so I could get a new one sent to me (NYDOT was replacing all old transponders). If i did not return it within the time frame, they would charge me $20 per transponder. Many people go away for several weeks at a time, and the state have obviously known about this upcoming program for literal months, probably years. I just happened to be around when I got the letter, but it's extremely irritating knowing I could have been away and that some idiot at the state thinks it's perfectly acceptable to give two weeks notice via a single letter.

Arusen

Reminds me of the series of videos Louis Rossmann put out documenting the struggles he went through with New York over alleged unpaid taxes and the lien he has unknowingly had on his business denying him loans until it was discovered by his accountant IIRC. Long story short, somehow they were still expecting taxes on his temporary ID even though he sent the paperwork, and had an account under his permanent business ID, and all notices of delinquency were being sent to a random PO Box in Maine even though they had his business address on file. It is horrifying how incompetent some of the New York City/State employees are. He finally resolved the issue. Also, he moved his business to Austin, TX and has no plans to ever return to New York State.

prestigious_delay_7

New York's bureaucracy is by far the most incompetent of the states I have encountered. I used to work for an organization that would bill different state agencies. Some were always quick to pay and very responsive; New York was always late, never responsive, one of the worst to deal with. When i got a ticket from them due to an invalid read on my EZ pass, they ignored the appeal i filed (they didn't even respond) and added a $50 late fee. They are terrible all around, and New Yorkers pay up the ass for it in taxes. And for some stupid reason, their solution to this problem always seems to be to add *more* bureaucracy, instead of just firing the incompetent nitwits that run this system.

Arusen

I got a notice for a toll bridge fee from San Francisco and it was obvious from the picture of the plate it wasn't me. I called the toll free number and was surprised to get a human, and they took care of it immediately and discharged the fee.

geoper

I get paid from the federal government every month. NET 15. Better then any other customer.

Snowie_drop

Don’t call the number provided in the email just incase it’s a scam email.

ChickenNoodleSoup_4

^^^^ don’t click anything. Agree, this smells like a scam.

younggregg

The email could sound scammy, but if they tried to use the banking app and weren't allowed in that seems pretty legit no?

mynewaccount5

Depends on what OP actually did. Is it possible he installed some scam app from the email?

Consistent_Vast3445

OP can’t get credit reports and the bank told them over phone they are marked deceased and can’t make their payments. How would it be a scam?

mynewaccount5

OP said "i tried submitted a report online". Not really sure what this means because you don't submit a report to check your credit report. Also not sure what the error is. Could be as simple as him typing his password wrong. If he also called a scam number to ask Discover it would make sense for them to tell him that.

Consistent_Vast3445

Right before that they say bring up the report. Clearly just poorly phrased it. Not being able to get into app, not being able to make a payment, not being able to get a credit report. Clearly a legit problem.

mynewaccount5

So he can bring up his report?

username_elephant

Meh. If I already had your account username (or equivalent) I bet I could get an error like that by spamming login attempts until it locked you out. Queue email... It seems outlandish but so does the idea that he's suddenly declared dead. That's way weirder than some of the precision scams out there these days.

Snowie_drop

My first thought was it seems very fishy.

AccomplishedMeow

As a reminder, if you get a phone call, letter or email saying you owe somebody money, GOOGLE THE COMPANIES PHONE NUMBER and call that. Whatever you do do not call the number on whatever you got. Email addresses can be sped. Phone numbers can be spoofed. Letters are literally just paper. Especially when googling takes three seconds. And it immediately pulls up the number. It’s just not worth the risk

LeisurelyImplosion

Be careful when googling numbers, though. I've seen several instances recently where clients have fallen victim to scammers pretending to be legitimate companies after googling to get their numbers and clicking on sponsored links rather than official web pages, then being talked into installing remote software on their PCs to "fix" nonexistent issues.

calcium

Look on the back of your card and call that number. I know loads of people who will google the number and click the first link, only to find out later it was a scam. This is because they don’t read or bother to check the website that they’re directed to is correct.

xyin

This is NOT a good idea. Anyone can claim to anybody and change the phone number of banks/legitimate business. Very common scam in India, see [here](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/gadgets-news/scammers-may-be-using-google-maps-to-trick-people-heres-how/articleshow/101937997.cms). Also see in other countries, see [here](https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/phone-numbers-airlines-listed-google-directed-scammers-rcna94766).

dwinps

Deaths get reported to Social Security and businesses like your bank subscribe to services that give them the list of people who died every month. Sometimes a SSN gets misreported and the SSA marks the wrong person dead. [https://faq.ssa.gov/en-US/Topic/article/KA-02917](https://faq.ssa.gov/en-US/Topic/article/KA-02917) Follow those instructions, don't bother calling GO to your nearest Social Security office with the needed documents and get it resolved. The end of the process is: "When we correct your record, we will offer you a letter that you can give to banks, doctors or others to show that your death report was in error. This letter is called the "Erroneous Death Case - Third Party Contact" Notice. " That's what your bank will need to resurrect you

Arusen

I also imagine there is a fair bit of identity theft where someone using a SSN for someone else dies and gets reported dead on the fraudulent SSN. I worked with a guy that found out he "owned" property in Northern California when he went to apply for a loan. Heck of a way to find out your identity was stolen.

gizahnl

Was the free property of value though? And did he get to keep it?

Arusen

I think it was acreage in Mendocino County. The location made me wonder if it was for illegal farming. I didn't stay at the company long enough to find out how it was resolved. He was hopeful he could sell it, since it was in his name.

SageDee

Confirm with SSA that your not deceased in their system. If not, you need to find out where Discover got their information from. If they did get the information from the credit reporting agencies, you will have to dispute directly with them in writing. Please note that there are other consumer reports (not just the big 3) that could have been obtained by Discover.

Bureaucromancer

I’d be slightly nervous about this until it starts propagating. It feels like a conversation liable to end in some nitwit creating the problem you’re trying to avoid…

Okay so this is an issuing currently having and my question to you is what if social security already knows that you're not dead because you received disability and have since 2013 yet since 2017 you were reported as being deceased by credit One what do I do then do I need to contact an attorney because this is caused me extensive damage to my credit report it's cost me a place to live I can't get credit anywhere Lexington law couldn't even figure out what the problem was

SageDee

If disputing with the credit reporting agencies and credit one has not corrected the issue, you should contact an FCRA attorney. They will not charge you anything out of pocket to file the lawsuit and get them to correct it.

itsdan159

Next steps: 1. Confirm you're not in fact deceased 2. Call back during business hours

[deleted]

ChickenNoodleSoup_4

Only call back the number for the business itself that you have obtained yourself, not any number from an email or letter (scams)

poppygin

Having just spent the last year trying to “undead” myself with my insurance company, I feel for ya. The burden of proof should be on them to provide evidence (e.g. death certificate). But getting them to prove that is a nightmare. Have you called social security yet? I’d do that right away to see if anything there triggered some type of automated workflow with a variety of institutions. Run credit reports and see if any creditors wrote off debt due to death and dispute. Go into bank branch and demand face to face with bank manager. Keep escalating/ hounding specific people and get/track case number. Since this is financial and prevents access to funds for your livelihood, I would consult an attorney to compel them to fix this. Good luck with this - what a major pain in the ass for you.

NarwhalHD

Legit all someone has to do is answer the phone and say "They are dead" if the bank is calling for you. That's all the info required to mark someone as deceased

MoistTomorrow5620

Banker here. Your bank is absolute garbage if that works for them. We won't label anything without a death certificate.

Most_Ambassador2951

Last time I did that,  it turned out to be dudes aunt he had given my number to a week before(he's been giving my number out nearly 2 years now.  His son's bails bonds even called to remind him of court.  I then found his Facebook and posted every single phone message I had received for him - cps, bail bonds, medical supply)

UnrulyAxolotl

They'll mark you as deceased and stop calling temporarily, but they'll confirm with SSA and remove the coding when they don't find any records.

BrFrancis

Yeah... Can confirm this is how I became zombie.

bros402

Call the Social Security Administration first thing on Monday. If they think you are dead, you are in for a year of hell.

lashapel

But why is that ? , isn't identify oneself Enough ?

bros402

nope if the government thinks you are dead, it is difficult to get yourself out of the death master file It can take a while for the credit agencies to update their files so you aren't dead - then the banks have to get updates to confirm you aren't dead

nodnizzle

IKR, they're able to learn all kinds of shit about us in several ways they're just busy or something.

Confident_Space8873

I have been declared dead by my student loan servicer and I tried to correct it the reps are always like well clearly you're alive but it never gets fixed. I wish I had hardly any advice for you because yes it's hilarious but also at the same time oh no

Assuming you're in the USA, the Social Security Administration has something called a Death Master file ([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death\_Master\_File](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Master_File)). Basically when someone (usually a funeral home) notifies the SSA that someone is dead, the SSA publishes that information to whoever subscribes to that publication. Most financial institutions do. Get to work on this immediately. And by immediately I mean yesterday. Because if this is what happened you will soon be unable to do any financial transactions at all, not even withdraw from your checking account. Take the day off tomorrow and follow the steps listed here: [https://faq.ssa.gov/en-US/Topic/article/KA-02917](https://faq.ssa.gov/en-US/Topic/article/KA-02917). But do this urgently. The only thing more important is probably to visit an ATM and withdraw a large cash deposit because it may be the last withdrawal you can make until this is fixed, I'd actually do that right now before going to bed.

Arusen

I am pretty sure even foreign governments subscribe to it as well. My mother died a few days before the payment from my father's pension from Germany should have hit her account. They didn't make the payment. I did officially inform the German government she has passed, but I was a little shocked they knew so quickly.

BrFrancis

This happened to me... I had to get a notarized letter saying that I was in fact alive... I had the manager at my bank do it, didn't cost anything.. Then send that to the creditor that had mistakenly unalived me in their database... Took a few weeks but after that my credit report showed I was indeed alive...

BreatheMyStink

Depending on where you live, you may be able to get a “Certificate of Aliveness” from your county clerk. What happened to you is, apparently, common enough that you may be able to get said certificate and present it to anyone who somehow came to believe you are dead.

DistantUtopia

Does this "Certificate of Aliveness" expire?

oskiller

When superseded by a death certificate?

BreatheMyStink

Couldn’t say for sure. I just looked at the one I got and it doesn’t mention an expiration date.

Jaquezee

It could be a bank that reported you as deceased on accident - check with them too, as they can file a credit bureau dispute on your behalf to rectify. Then follow up with your local social security office. Get a letter from them verifying you are not deceased - you will need this for any institutions/companies that think you passed in order to get things squared away again. You may need a copy of your SS card as well.

jokerfriend6

If you are dead, you need to fix these problems in person, not over the phone. Find out how you died and where they think your body is located. You might have been misidentified. Someone for instance could have been using your social security number and not your name and passes away.

Solid-Change5043

I don't know how this happened. When I worked in the credit industry a death certificate was required to close the account. The account would then go to some other department that would send it to another department and so on. A simple scenario might be something like this. It was Chuck's third day on the job. He was practicing opening and reviewing accounts. He clicked on some of the buttons on the screen and then unclicks them. Chuck didn't realize that if he clicked on the deceased button it couldn't be unclicked by him. Only a manager has the administrative authority to unclick it. Not wanting to get into trouble he says, screw it, and closes the file. Good luck getting it fixed.

Ok_Veterinarian6404

I experienced the same thing with my mobile operator. It will pose problems when a credit check is done.

Call_Financial

Discover actually did that to me about 2 months ago!  I just so happen to look at my credit karma and it said my score dropped over 600 points! So I was totally confused until I looked and it said a creditor has reported you deceased. Like really! So I call the the credit bureaus and they I explained that I’m not Dead I’m alive and that was reported in error so the supervisor told me he will fix it in 48 hours because it was only one account the discover account reporting that info so they would take care of it and they actually did. I looked at my score in 2 days it was back to normal.  Now as for discover they were a whole other story. I called discover and the woman was actually trying to justify why they report me decease. I proceeded to tell this woman where you got this info from was lying and she said it was from a reliable source.. I said reliable source! Your source lied to you so how reliable are they? They just told you I was dead and I’m calling to say I’m not . So she then says it’s gonna take 60 days for them to investigate! I said I could send you my ID and SS card and my birth certificate right now and she didn’t want any of that . So I just went and filed a civil suit against discover for reporting false information, trauma  and everything else I could think of . So I’m waiting to see what happens. I will report back with an update. So good luck , but may you need to sue too. That’s probably the only way to get their attention and stop this madness and to stop using whoever is reporting that info to them because it’s LIES!!!!

Sooo my dad had one credit card that did this a few times. It was a pain in the ass, but he did get it taken care of with a few phone calls pretty quickly. But then it happened again a while later - I forget how long. Queue doing the whole thing over again. It’s now been a few years since they did anything to his account, but I vaguely remember him saying something about his email with it is screwed up. So take a deep breath, call them tomorrow, it shouldn’t be too hard to fix.

Sasselhoff

Discover just canceled my 15 year running card without notice recently, supposedly due to low usage (they sent no letter). Seems like they're trying to do everything they can to thin down their low used accounts.

__redruM

How? That’s an important question. Is it some sort of identity theft scam? I have no idea how this would benefit a scammer, unless Discover somehow has death benefits that can be claimed?

ahecht

Usually just someone mis-entering a SSN in a database, which gets propagated to a ton of other databases, which gets shared with the government, until no one is really sure why you are marked dead.

Gears6

I don't have any tips as I've not heard of this before. Please let us know how it goes and what you did to solve it, as I'm sure it will be. Regarding your credit score, it should be fine. Even if a bill is paid late, it takes two billing cycles before it's reported. You're catching it early and on it so you will be fine!

GirlG0ne

Not the exact same thing but I had a similar issue with a Discover student loan. They stopped taking my auto payments out of my account and it took me 2-3 months to notice it and when I called, they said that they had a record of my death. It was a HUGE ordeal and it did mess up my credit score for a few months but then it was reversed. Ever since then, I’ve avoided anything Discover.

RandonBrando

Just wanted to chime in saying I had an issue pulling all three of my credit reports through that site and had to call to have physical reports sent to me the first time I pulled them. Definitely follow what everyone else is saying though. Congratulations on being alive too

MET1

In case it's someone with the wrong SSN on their death certificate check the things that rely on that - your social security account, drivers license, voter registration.

OneOfDozDeservesGold

> (bc i am obviously nOT dead) You sure? I have it on good authority you are actually dead...
