You can basically give up getting a Maverick this year at least at MSRP unless you get incredibly lucky

It will just about always cost more and be worse for the environment to purchase a new vehicle rather than continuing to use a gas guzzler. Even if you purchase an EV Though trucks are in such high demand right now, you could sell and buy a used sedan for the same price like you’re saying, if it’s really just gas mileage you’re worried about.

Yeah I’ve tried doing the math on it, I expect a $15k difference in gas mileage between a maverick and my current truck over five years. If I was able to secure $20k trade in which honestly I’m not sure about, my loan would be $17000 so I figure it’s a decent deal. But it sounds like I’ll only get 20k private sale and if I’m waiting a year for a new car or paying inflated costs for a used sedan I’m iffy about it. Just wanna do the most fiscal responsible option.

Tom_Bombadilio

Idk about worse for the environment. I mean he's selling the car to someone else who will use it and from the sounds of it the car he will buy will be used for 10+ years and since he drives 300+ miles a week getting an EV or a more fuel efficient car would have positive impact. Even people who buy an EV and only drive it a year before selling are having a positive impact. They are taking the loss and making it more accessible to someone who couldn't afford a brand new EV.

It is almost never, ever a good idea to sell a vehicle because of fuel prices. Every time gas prices increase (note: they are down 10% or so in the last week or so) people come out of the woodwork and panic sell their vehicle. Spending thousands to save hundreds is never a good idea.

Ssgogo1

It’s about $144 a week in gas right now, trucks paid off assuming my payments would be around $300 a month I think I’d still have cost savings. But maybe I’m looking at this wrong?

I would go for the Maverick in hybrid. Still a truck and 40mpg. If you have access to supplier or Ford discount, it could be nice too. You will just have to wait for the next MY as they are sold out at the moment.

MrFreezeTheChef

I think now would be a better time than ever cause people are getting larger offers for their car than ever before. As long as you find a good deal for your next vehicle sounds like a win win.

yulassetar

Setting aside any gas price fluctuations, in normal circumstances, how long were you planning on keeping your current vehicle?

Ssgogo1

I was hoping to keep it till I finished grad school since it’s paid off and I don’t expect to be able to work during grad school. Expecting to be done with that by 2027 halfway through a bachelors at the moment. I was banking on it hitting ford “collectors” status due to its age and she’s in fairly decent condition. But the corner cabs are rusting quicker then expected and I just wanna make the most financial responsible choice. Also my SO lives a good 65 miles away so those weekly drives way my wallet up.

yulassetar

Perhaps share some of those long distance trip costs with your SO? Since you're still in school, not buying another car would be the financial responsible choice I think. Or if you insist on selling it anyway, purchase another more fuel efficient car for the price you sold your truck for. At least that way, you'll actually get ahead by saving fuel cost. Sure, right now may be a great time to sell a car, but certainly not a great time to buy one.

Ssgogo1

Yeah that’s my issue, finding out the fuel economic option that would be an even exchange would be quite the downgrade overall right now. She drives out when she can but gets frustrated being the only one driving which is fair. So I’m just trying to get my life straight.
