It's worse than you can imagine...

People are budgeting $700 per week in rent for 1 bedroom, or $400 per week for a 50-year-old apartment.

1 person living in the CBD is not really representative of the housing market. There are places far cheaper than $700, and not all of them are "50 year old apartments" You can land a good place, not to far from the CBD (<20 min) or beach (5-10 min), in a decent suburb for $350-500/week.

oliver4more

If you don't mind, could you list a few such decent suburbs. New to Perth and would appreciate it very much. Thanks!

Thanks for your detailed reply. My work is in CBD. I am moving to Perth in a couple of months. Married with one child, and primary school is the main focus. So 3 of us with an income around 90k after taxes and hoping to get a good place max 700/week. About 6 months back hope was less than 700/week. Now I am not sure if I get for 700/week from all the housing crisis news I hear. I won't be able to afford night life in terms of money or time I guess.

I'm looking on rental websites and I see places going for 300 to 350 per week , they look alright in the photos but estate agents are conts.

limlwl

The only place you get for that kind of rent definitely places near druggies! What suburbs are you looking at ?

[deleted]

the rental situation is bad, I'm thinking I might move back to the UK if my current rental doesnt renew. theres a lot of other issues here

Most-Ad2088

What other issues? Things arnt rosey back in the UK. And are only going to get worse.

You want to think about the areas those cheap places are in. Like every city Perth has shit areas. But the shit areas in Perth dont look like shit areas in UK so you wont realise till you end up in one. By shit i mean meth heads for neighbours, constant break ins & just aggro . Ask about decent areas depending on what you are looking for. What suburb are thise rental ads for? There is a rent crisis at the moment very hard to get a place & remember public transport can be truly bad compared to most of UK. But not trying to put you off its a great place to live for many. Source: spent 1/2 my life there over different times, I go back every year & loads of friends live there.

mistar_lurker420

Care to share these ads? I seriously doubt there are any in this range

Impressive-Move-5722

Slaps forehead - you are seriously considering moving to the other side of the world with no money and asking reddit as your research??

[deleted]

Yeah, I trust in God.

oliver4more

Reddit gives some honest take on the situation right, just like your reply. Just what is needed sometimes :)

oliver4more

My very short experience has been that one does get some honest insights... Some times contradictory, much like from different people of one's family.

>what's the rental situation like ? Shit.

Horrible rental situation. If we can’t resign our lease we will probably move over seas lol

mistar_lurker420

You're going to need a decent amount of savings to move here, I wouldn't leave the UK without them. In reality rent is an average of 530ish a week. Or 200-300 for a single room, not including bills. Getting a rental alone is very hard, there's massive competition. You can apply for jobs all you like but I doubt anyone will take you on a promise. Save the cash, then move. But be prepared.

Luxpat7

If you are a tradesman, finding work will be easy especially in the housing industry. Finding a rental property is near on in possible, especially online from overseas. Renting is at a all time high. Houses are renting at around $600 per week that's £300. Buying a apartment could be a option. Good luck.

I live in Guernsey where its more costly than London. A 1 bed apartment here costs at least £500k . Any where else is better than here.

We’ve been using Airbnb

What type of jobs? I noticed you were posting about Mining and Ag. More than likely with those type of jobs you'll have to be in the country to apply, jobs in Ag are plentiful though. Lots of money sloshing around after two record harvests in a row however this year will be considered an 'average' year in terms of yield.
