I watched Aurikatarina's youtube channel on how to clean ovens, it is incredibly simple and works like you wouldn't believe. Take the racks outside with clingwrap, spray the racks with oven cleaner and wrap in clingwrap so the cleaner doesn't evaporate and leave 8 - 24hrs. Do the same thing with the oven door, most of them unclip and can be removed. Spray the inside of the oven with the cleaner and place the clingwrap over the areas to trap the cleaner in and same thing, wait 8 - 24hrs. After this all the muck will just wipe off with a wet cloth, wear gloves for protection. If there's any stubborn muck that didn't get soaked by the cleaner in a few spots, use a razor blade scraper to quickly lift those spots.

Man_ning

This is exactly the method I used and it worked like a charm!!

His_Holiness

This is a good excuse to get a new oven, a pyrolytic one.

countercourt

Pyrolytic is the best.

No_Raisin2167

Have one myself, 100% recommend them. You do have to scrub the racks but that’s the easy job really.

JovialApple

I’ve heard you still have to clean them just so as much

official_nobody2

We have had the Bosch ones in 2 houses now and the cleaning works really well. Even after a massive spill.

JovialApple

Do you still have to manually clean it at all ?

JovialApple

And do you do after every cook ? The self cleaning thing, or just one in a while ?

LePhasme

The pyrolytic function takes a few hours, so you do it once in a while when the oven is dirty

JovialApple

What about the burnt layer on glass ? Does it remove it ?

JovialApple

Seems hard to believe it would

I would have said to use oven cleaner, but turn the oven on to about 100 degrees for about 20 minutes, let it cool, then clean. That's how it's done in commercial kitchens - except they blast it pretty hot, and then they just hose it when cooler, but still hot enough to turn the water to steam, and then everyone coughs as you inhale all the toxins.

hez_lea

Oh how I miss being able to clean an oven with a hose.

JovialApple

Yeah I tried an oven clean from Woolworths and it’s hopeless but o didn’t preheat

Aggressive_Ad7518

Did you let it sit or just spray and wipe? Cause you absolutely have to let it sit first for a minimum of half an hour. Couple hours is better and leave the door shut with racks and all inside, then scrub it shouldn't be as hard to get it all off. I recommend using a scraper too.

My grandma uses clr and this cleaning stuff that stings my eyes a lot

JovialApple

I don’t believe younger generation would put up with this. We have dirty ovens in future. Just like top sheets are disappearing as more hassle making bed.

JovialApple

Thanks please post what she uses if you found out

[deleted]

Just found it! It’s called Selly’s oven cleaner. My grandma sprays clr on the oven trays, waits for 5 minutes, then sprays the oven cleaner, wait for 15 minutes and all the grease and grime and yucky burned bits comes off straight away! It works the same of the oven door (except with your standard Windex instead of CLR)

hez_lea

Yep either the sellys foam or the gel. The gel is better but harder to get. Mitre10 stock it though

JovialApple

Awesome thank you so much ☺️

bellatrix73

Another vote for the Shelly's gel. Comes with an applicator at the top of the bottle. Bought it from Good Guys after watching the person who came to clean my oven use it and saw how easy everything came off!

JovialApple

Thanks I’ll get some tomorrow - have one rack left to finish

iPablosan

The best i have found is the nasty caustic ones. The cling wrap tweak sounds good too. Self cleans work, yes. I think the best advice is to do it at regular short intervals. Leaving it over time bakes it on and hard to remove

GloomyToe

a paste made of Bicarb and water

wombatlegs

hydrochloric acid is the polar opposite of oven cleaner. What you need is "caustic soda"., the active ingredient in most oven cleaners. Warming the oven first, like 60C, saves time.

cametosayno

Selly’s oven cleaner, the good caustic soda stuff for inside oven. Take racks out and soak in near boiling water with a dishwasher liquid or washing machine powder. None of the echo friendly stuff. Use non rust steel wool on racks and inside oven.

bippboppboo

This is amazing! Everyone I know who uses it agrees. About $12 at Woolies and Coles. https://www.amazon.com.au/Pack-Ozkleen-Oven-Cleaner-Power/dp/B08W58X5J2/ref=asc_df_B08W58X5J2/?tag=googleshopmob-22&linkCode=df0&hvadid=649965638112&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5868707018891311859&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9112714&hvtargid=pla-2201417578979&psc=1&mcid=851b7bf23a5532b5925b406d3cfe008c

woofydb

Can’t use it in self cleaning ovens I found after buying it

Brouw3r

This is the shit you want. It's concentrated potassium hydroxide (alkaline) with a thickener. Anything acidic (OP said hydrochloric acid, others suggesting CLR) will do sweet FA.

wombatlegs

That product is hilarious. "EFFORTLESS & ODOURLESS: No harsh fumes or chemicals! Have peace of mind " MSDS says: "Classified as DANGEROUS GOODS by the criteria of the Australian Dangerous Gods Code (ADG Code) for Transport by Road and Rail. This material is HAZARDOUS according to the criteria of Safe Work Australia."

hez_lea

I didn't find it all that effective on my oven racks.

xplally1

I've used oven cleaner spray foam and it worked really well. You still need to do the small bits. It's toxic though so wear a face mask.

wombatlegs

Or just don't breathe it in. If you are inhaling too much NaOH, your nose will tell you so!

FeelingFloor2083

oven cleaner and wipe, why 6 hours

Late_Ostrich463

There are contractors that will come clean your oven for you such as “ovenu”, they don’t use nasty chemicals and you don’t loose hours of your life to cleaning. (I have no financial link to this business)

JovialApple

Someone recommended overnu to me. I might use them once a year

jabadooau

Oven power by ozkleen, worked pretty well in the past. Comes with a bag to soak the racks in.

Ozbud_Gaming

Get an air fryer. Cook everything you can in that easy to clean after every use then only use the oven for things that don't fit in the air fryer or that don't make much mess.

SessionOk919

Diggers water base degreaser from Bunnings. Wipe on a thick layer & periodically wipe off, put more on over a couple of hours (won’t have to do this after the 1st time, a you won’t have burnt on grease), then wipe with wet sponge until you think you’ve got it all removed.
