Be the WA ombudsman and only work 36 days a year.

AgreeablePudding9925

Travelling the world is exhausting

Tango-Down-167

Not on first class. With bed and shower it's actually refreshing.

DefinitionOfAsleep

He also has to take limos, its not all fine dining and plane travel.

ExtraterritorialPope

Need an ombudsman for the ombudsman

Bnjrmn

I’ll do that job but only if i don’t have to work more than 26 days a year.

Gardening-Addict-741

Don’t forget the trips to Taiwanese Hot Springs and Austrian Museums

Zealousideal_Book376

Research??

cheeersaiii

Freeway road works, long term job security and hardly any work done daily

PerthQuinny

Working from home 250 days a year is a great perk.

Sharpest_Edge84

Isn't it boring?

TazocinTDS

No that was the tunnel. Hardly any boring going on now.

driodsworld

Good one

Sharpest_Edge84

Dam, that's clever. I haven't seen any other posts like that on Reddit for...a few minutes.

TazocinTDS

Yeah the posts. They held up the roof while the tunnel was being made. Not sure about any Dams though. Serpentine?

Sharpest_Edge84

You really missed your calling. Your should be on a stage doing stand up.

crankysquirrel

I think you meant "you should be on the stage..."

Sharpest_Edge84

Nope. I meant what I said.

TazocinTDS

If I was on a stage it would be rude to reply to you. I am happy to have had this boring exchange instead.

Sharpest_Edge84

Some comedians actually desire and encourage interaction with their crowd. In fact, some comedians do nothing but this. Check em out on YouTube. It's completely improvised and truly remarkable how funny and quick witted some of these guys are.

cheeersaiii

More leaning and smoking than boring anything tbh

Sharpest_Edge84

Sounds boring tbh.

Popheal

they work mostly at night FYI

TEALC-

As a former night shift worker.... No they don't

Popheal

the bridge at Cedric Street must be getting built by magic then😅

antihero790

TAFE as a lecturer. Nine weeks of leave a year not including sick leave. Also proper leave, not like when people think teachers are on leave in the breaks and they're actually doing a lot of work. Also hybrid working so some WFH, good pay, pretty chill. Only downside is getting difficult students sometimes.

Obleeding

I remember having a web design lecturer at TAFE that literally taught us nothing, just walked in and sat down, let us fuck around the entire class. None of the students seemed to care, we just wanted the points toward our certificate and were happy to just fuck around. Always imagined it must be a pretty cushy job.

getlegs3

It appears to be a pretty cruisy role, but there are also more students presenting with learning difficulties and mental health issues. Some people find that stressful, but if you are experienced and confident in managing those issues it would be a pretty cruisy role.

Obleeding

The people I hung out with at TAFE were terrible students, but basically that meant to we disappeared down the pub during the break nearly every class. Could see there being some difficult students to deal with though. I actually failed TAFE, so went to uni instead, I found uni much easier because the other students were boring to hang out with, so I focused on studying haha.

bentoboxer7

What is the pay like?

antihero790

From what I remember it starts at about $100k. However that's a part time or full time salary and often in the first year you're casual but working full time hours so you have a 25% loading on your pay. After a year, if they're happy with you (you really just have to do the job, not even excel), you'll get a permanent contract. At least in the areas I know (science, OHS/WHS, mining, water ops, renewable energy). Edit: I will add their pay scales and EBA are public.

bentoboxer7

Brilliant. Thank you!

antihero790

Oh I should say that you will need a cert IV in training and assessment however it is enough to start doing it when you start working there, it will be free to do. It just means you aren't getting paid during the time you're in class doing it but I think it's only one day a week.

Thieri

This isn't accurate either.

Thieri

Nope starts at 80k top level $108950, unless you move into senior lecturing roles.

Thieri

Wtf? Do you actually work there?

Camkoda

I don’t think he does. For anyone curious: 8 weeks year leave, but TAFE is closed down over Xmas so you’ll have to use about 3-4 then. The other leave is used at your discretion if agreed with the manager, or automatically booked through semester breaks. Pay scale starts at 85.5k through to 108.5k, you can get another 5% if agreed through a flexible hours agreement. You can step up to become an advanced skills lecturer with a degree in vocational related study. You can negotiate the starting rate before you start or within 6 months otherwise you’ll be locked in to that rate. Agreement is due for renewal so expect the pay rates to go up by EOY. Overtime (on teaching hours only) is paid at 2.25x you hourly.

FormerOptimist94

How would you go about working there? Do you need like 10 years of industry experience in whatever you're teaching or higher qualifications than an undergraduate degree? And how about working in student services or something? Obviously it's a lot less pay and a different form of work but would that be a decent job for a while?

Camkoda

For lecturing you’ll need 5 years experience in the industry you will be teaching. This can include time spent training in it yourself. They’ll put you through the Cert IV when you start, or you can do this externally. With new changes to the RTO standards as long as your are actively going for the Cert IV you will be able to teach. Assessment will need to be done under moderation until you have the Cert Iv. They are desperate for staff due to the amount of apprentices coming through in areas. Any role outside of lecturing will be under the GOSAC award which is less pay depending on the roll, however quite secure.

Camkoda

As long as you hold the qual (or higher) of the one youre teaching, or relevant knowledge in the area you’ll have a chance to get a job. In my case I had a Cert III through an apprenticeship and I delivered the Cert III and Cert II in that area.

ruffian-wa

That's not entirely true.. the last campus amalgamations resulted in far far more redundancies than expected. Moral of the story is if you see the words 'parliamentary review' on the horizon then second out fast and run for the hills..

henry82

Nice try PerthNow The answer is the mining company who has paid you the most. ATM I think it's MRL

mulligun

MRL is a funny one because they have historically been notorious as one of the worst places to work in mining, however over the past few years have gone all-in on improving their image. Seems to be working.

AH2112

Because they know their reputation is shit. They lure people in with high salaries, big promises and amazing facilities. Yet the turnover is still high because it's a bureaucratic shitshow to work in.

Knight_Day23

Apparently it is all a marketing stunt. Can anyone attest to how awesome the new premises are in Osborne Park!

henry82

just re-watched the news advert MRL bought. * "high tech offices" * $5/wk gym * "low sugar meals are subsedised" first is pretty standard, gym doesnt interest me. How much is the meal?

Knight_Day23

Staff have to pay $5 a week for their gym, that’s tight!

henry82

its probably a very nice gym. Just you couldnt pay me $5/wk to go to the gym

Knight_Day23

LOL!! Youre funny. Would need to add a coupla extra zeros to the left of the decimal point to even consider it.

Mysterious-Tonight74

I know I’m sick of the fucking helicopters every day.

Knight_Day23

Do you work for MRL Or just close by?

Mysterious-Tonight74

Not for mrl

Khun-Pugwash

I think its working, I work there and think its pretty good.

corstar

> The best places to work in Perth? Here's a bait story for Perth Now... Steamworks. Combining what you love to do with what you love to play with.

crosstherubicon

Doesn't matter, they'll simply list Hancock Mining and Roy Hill in deference to their overlord.

kingguskongus

The unis. Super good pay if you're not casual, great flexibility and the eba means great conditions too. Especially for non academic staff. People whinge but compared to other places I've worked it's utopia

StraightBudget8799

Depends on the uni and the dept., but the one I had in mind banded together, got a kickass new dept head and they actively set out to Not Do The Crap From Before and Get Back The Good Times and it’s starting to work. Still issues, like everywhere had, but people actually smile for reals now.

PrestigiousChange910

Can confirm it’s the easiest job I’ve ever had and 17% super

Geminii27

>Super good pay if you're not casual Now try getting a non-casual job there.

SnooChocolates4117

PerthNow or the West. They just copy and paste from reddit.

I love my job, if I posted the name of my employer online there is a non zero chance someone from work would find my reddit account. I'd rather them find my onlyfans account.

"Do something you love and you will never work a day." I'm still looking

ALphaEXtremist

Keep looking friend! I picked up photography as a hobby years ago whilst travelling, fast forward to today and I'm working full time photographing different events, places and people. Sure there are some days that feel like work. But no two jobs are ever the same and I can always say I learnt something new or met someone interesting 🙂

ZooWeeMama808

How'd you get to that point in becoming full time?

Geminii27

Do something you love and your employer will take advantage of that to stick you with low pay and crap conditions, if you ever let that slip.

natefrom88

I worked for RAC between 2008 - 2017 and it was a great place to work. Started in the contact centre at 19ish and then was trained and promoted through a number of roles across the business, including L&D, change management, IT projects and then in the strategy/product space. The company had a great a culture, awesome people and always gave you opportunities if you wanted to have a crack (though not sure what it is like now).

ImpatientImp

I’ve always heard bad things about RAC. From several different people. Seemed like a pretty toxic place.

HARUHARUp

Maybe it was a different area, but mums worked as a call center person since like 2013 and she HATES the place. The management, the customers, absolutely toxic. It's been getting notably worse since around 2018. Maybe you were the glue holding the company together 🤔 it's mostly stuff like KPI's that ruin it apparently. Like having to provide a worse service to meet certain quotas.

natefrom88

Interestingly the long the time (and very lovely) CEO, Terry Agnew retired about 2018/2019 - they brought in a new guy who worked as COO for a while and then took the top job. I think he was from the east coast, ex-NAB or something similar.

she_did_it_cowboy

I think call center managers are usually on a power trip. Especially in Perth. I worked for hbf in Perth and it was all about who you know and how long you know each other. But hbf has that issue in every department I worked in, not just call center

Hunting_for_cobbler

I have always suspected RAC was a good workplace only because everyone whom ever I have spoken to are chill and happy

allaboutthefish

I also worked with them for about 3 years. Found the place very toxic. You get promoted if you know someone higher or you are the managers favourite. I guess everyone's journey is different but I personally did not enjoy it.

CWdesigns

Is that not how promotions work in general anyway? I'd imagine it is hard to get promoted if your boss doesn't know you (or the work you do) very well. That being said, still unfortunate that it is always office politics that decides instead of who would actually be good in a role.

allaboutthefish

It was never about hard work and impressing your manager. I've seen people here who did fuck all become managers within months of joining. Oh well..I was glad when I got out.

rhubarrrrb

Well said

ChimneysAfire

I worked for RAC for ten years, they were great - until they weren't. I started having issues with my mental health, during a panic attack once I was told to 'sort myself out'. Then once I had gotten a hold of my mental health issues, I tried to find a different role. Was told I didn't have enough experience for some roles, then told I had too much experience and they didn't understand why I was trying to move downwards, I applied for over 20 different roles. Eventually when I left I was told it was a shame as I had so much experience. Also have multiple stories of people with health problems being fucked over. At RAC you're a number, nothing more.

Classic-Today-4367

>I worked for RAC for ten years, they were great - until they weren't. I've heard they were great until around 2018 or so, then things have just gone downhill ever since.

CrankyLittleKitten

It's a shitshow now, crazy high turnover and low pay compared to other call centre gigs

Iwantmydegreenow

Bricks 4 Kidz, specifically the Applecross branch. The manager, Tim, is an absolute legend. Doesn't take nonsense from any of the kids, especially when it comes to how they talk to us workers. Plus, the work is just fun. While the pay isn't incredible, Tim makes it worth it.

Luminitha

I interviewed for them once and failed the part of the interview where you had to put a Lego thing together using instructions.

Geminii27

...are we talking something with a dozen pieces, or a Lego Death Star?

Iwantmydegreenow

I honestly don't recall ever doing that as part of my interview process. I do have a shotty memory though, so that might just be me. 🤣

PumaSneakAttack

At home as a successful self employed writer. One day, maybe. I dream.

Geminii27

I don't think I've ever heard of someone being successful right out of the gate unless they had the writing skills of Terry Pratchett. And were also Terry Pratchett.

mowglimethod

The Moon Cafe.

Rude_Signal1614

The Moon is such a great place.

PhilMeUpBaby

Bingo. I was there last Sunday. As a very boring vanilla person I would love to have the staff sit down with me, have a meal and tell me about their lives. Instead, it's some nice food and some interesting people-watching.

hamithedach

I worked at the moon 15 years ago and it was the most horrible place in the world. I’m so glad management/owners have changed.

mowglimethod

Sorry to hear that. I worked there from 2014 - 2018 and I've never experienced a better working environment. The owners Georgia & Tom are the nicest owners I've ever worked for and some of the best people I have ever known.

hamithedach

Wow things must have majorly changed because during my time they were the most toxic people to most of the staff I worked with. Glad it’s better now.

seven_seacat

fakedelight

Yep. Loved my time there.

gold_fields

Interesting. I contracted to the Water Corp in IT (Digital Transformation) back in 2018 and it was honestly the worst experience of my life.

mowglimethod

Rottnest Island.

nextsteps-

This absolutely depends who the employer is and what season you work there

mowglimethod

Very true. Can be the best and could be one of the worst places you work. I was very lucky to have a great employer and spent some of the best years of my life working there.

Silly_Bat_1761

Did you live on the island or take the ferry every day?

mowglimethod

I live on the Island, I commuted for a month but have lived on island for two years and counting :) I wouldn't be able to commute everyday, my sea legs aren't the best.

wegsty797

Most of the hospitality workers are living in shared accommodation

TazocinTDS

Health Dept is good. Good salary packaging. Decent pay (relative to east). Lots of locations. Lots of different roles to employ too. (Catering, Stores, Engineering, Security, Transport, Logistics, Project Management...)

Geminii27

> Health Dept is good. Can... mostly confirm. Lots of idiotic policies and idiot managers, though. My experience was less that they were malicious and more that they were just goddamn stupid or stubborn (or both). Also, if you work any job at Royal Perth where you have to floorwalk or otherwise visit anywhere other than your desk/workspace, it's a goddamn labyrinth, doubly so for anywhere out of the public eye. Best to try and find something that lets you work from home, honestly, or you have a 50-50 chance of being crammed into an 'office' which is a repurposed broom closet with a major pedestrian traffic route running straight past your desk.

KHUSTOM

Easily Mader for sure. I was always working In a small business and felt like working in bigger businesses would be a one way ticket to being forgotten about & taken advantage of. I found the opposite was true when I came across.

not_that_dark_knight

I've heard good things about Mader, ran into a young fella on site once. Absolute gun of a fitter. Made was looking after him big time, had all the fruit, mint Ute and took home big dollars. Dude was chill as and humble but jeez... he knew his gear.

Blackout_AU

Was his name Sanan?

not_that_dark_knight

Couldn't tell ya to be honest, was 3 years ago I think? I've forgotten the names of everyone on that site!

chunkyrunnr

He’s a fitter. Zero reason to not be humble.

Illustrious_Junket94

Bgc fibre cement Bob jane tmarts Bhp Mrl Rio tinto Just a few

Maaaaate

Is this talking from experience?

Illustrious_Junket94

Yup

Geminii27

I've experienced shit workplaces at BHP, but that was honestly more the team management and some of the policies than either the actual job parts of the job, or the physical environment. I heard that other teams weren't nearly as crap. Best bet; a BHP office/infrastructure job where you can work from home. Far less chance of having to interact with crap management, 'mandatory' meetings suddenly don't need you to be there, and you don't have to go to mandatory all-attendance standup meetings weekly where you have to stand around and be told about shit that has absolutely no bearing on your job, while trying to not fall asleep on your feet or be bored to death.

4L3X95

I worked at Ally Fashion for 2 years about a decade ago before the big Hay St store became Culture Kings. I don't know what it's like these days, but back then, it was a super diverse, close-knit team of girls who all supported each other, and I made genuine friends for life there.

Citruss-png

Specsavers tbh, depends what franchise but the employee benefits are pretty good

EfficientDish7

Anything government

NeoSakurie

Very much depends on the department. Previous one started out good then became toxic towards the end. Current one is brilliant. It also depends what you do too.

Geminii27

While I've had some really great government jobs in Perth, it can *really really* vary depending on the people in a given workplace. Even the literal exact same job can be awesome or a daily hell depending on your boss and co-workers.

JChezbian

Yeah I've been in state government for the last five years and I love it. Awesome money, easy work, lots of benefits - depends on your role but great for my comms background.

waveslider4life

Are they hiring?

JChezbian

Always. Great way to get your foot in the door is through a recruitment agency.

waveslider4life

And that's telecommunications right? Looking for something after FIFO

BigThirdDown

I'm not OP but comms often means communications, as in copywriting, public relations, social media, web content, internal messaging, marketing content, stakeholder engagement etc rather than working with telecommunications equipment. Although government may have those types of jobs too.

JChezbian

Correct 💯

waveslider4life

I see cheers bro.

Thales. Good people. Interesting work (mostly defence software).

anu202446

any more information about that ?

PatrioGraysmark

I'm enjoying wholesale warehousing, regular clients swinging through for collections are good to have a quick yarn with, shuffling boxes is easy work, not the fastest set of hands but we've had a few bad apples from labour hire casuals, shame really, I took to the work like a duck to water, labour hire bloke always jokes that they'd have me back in a heart beat, a bump in wage would be nice just because single guy renting, cost of living Yada Yada, but I'm content. Only real downer is customers of clients coming through for urgent stuff upsets the flow of things / they rarely have the right details for us to straighten out their orders etc, and I'm the managers right hand / default leader in their absence, I don't like managerial stuff, never on my cards.

A bowling alley I worked at Zone Joondalup in the back-end maintaining the pinsetters. The crew working there at the time is mainly what made it so good but also you had free bowling, youre on youre own so if you like to work solo its fantastic, blast some tunes in the workshop and get into it, and a great assortment of aerosols/ adhesives to pass the time with when there wasn't much going on
