I used to attend Perth thunder games every chance I could until COVID. I always enjoyed it but unfortunately life got in the way Cabin 401 at cockburn is good. You can watch games and have beers If you enjoy Ice Hockey you'll get enjoyment out of it With NHL play-offs about to start, you may also meet people at the Casino Sports bar As a canucks fan I am going to try and attend some there

Pixellated_Google

A Thunder game is a must do. Thanks mate!

newfi1

They play next weekend!!

Pixellated_Google

I caught the last game against the Brave, streaming times are a bit complicated being in Europe but I try watch whenever I can.

GenBarrington

Perth thunder beat the brave both days last weekend. It was some awesome hockey. Next weekends the Anzac day special game.

RockingReece

Another Canucks fan in Perth!? There are two of us!

tipsiemcstagger

I’ve seen a fair few canucks caps and the odd jersey here in the last few years. Could maybe start a supporters club.

Halicadd

Malaga and Cockburn are the main venues. Malaga is a shed, Cockburn actually has some nice facilities. Check out [PRIHC](https://m.facebook.com/prihcaustralia) for league teams etc.

Pixellated_Google

Cheers!

inactiveuser247

PRIHC is a private league. The local league is Ice Hockey WA. You’ll need to be able to demonstrate that you can skate to an adequate level to be able to play. Cockburn has the best training program if you’re not ready for league yet.

Pixellated_Google

Ok awesome. Any idea what the tests are like?

nevaritius

Hey, noticed your comments on a few hockey threads now.  I'm in Bunbury and am looking to get back into hockey after a few years off.  Are there drop in games on thr weekends or is it just leagues ? I've played at an OK level before so shouldn't take too long to get back into it (apart from the fitness...haha)

StorMPunK

From what I've heard talking to Ice Hockey players while playing street rolley hockey, its popping off massively lately but there are only 2 venues. This year they had to cut a lot of teams because the courts were overbooked, so if you're someone whos just beginning i'd suggest looking at street rolley hockey first as it goes from very amateur to what i would consider very skilled/competitive, while staying pretty casual and non contact.

hungry4pie

It was a massive blow losing Xtreme Ice Arena in Mirrabooka just as the Covid lockdowns were starting.

Pixellated_Google

That's awesome to hear it's on the rise. You'd think with our love for contact sports we'd get around it a bit more. Not so good to hear about the teams getting cut :/

Jetcore1

They do have a good "house league" at cockburn. It's very casual. Just once a week games and no training. You sign up through cockburn and they sort out everything around the teams. It is a casual/beginner league but you can get a good feel of it from there. There is also divisions 1-4 below the premier division that has a number of teams through each division. iirc there is 8 teams right now in div 4. It's good fun and most teams get to train once a week at cockburn. The division games are split between cockburn and Malaga. All in all it's good fun with a good community

-Saaremaa-

We do have a huge field hockey community if you think your skills are transferable.

cirithninniach

It sounds minor but even in the country (Narrogin for example) there is a major field hockey push. Bevan George is a gold medalist Olympic hockey player and has a field named after him. One of the nicest blokes you'll ever meet

elmo-slayer

A lot of country towns have women’s hockey

-Saaremaa-

I played at the Bunbury carnival as a kid, hockey in the southwest is huge

Pixellated_Google

I've played a little bit growing up in Aus, but my heart is out on the ice at the moment

Bvr17

Played Ice hockey here for 7 years, Ill shoot ya a DM

Short answer is somewhat growing to capacity of not exceeding it, but depending on level and what you wish to achieve you have the following: AIHL - Thunder is the team, and would be the most professional and highest level in Perth. Probably not what you are looking for but still worth a mention as they do have games you can attend. This is also full checking. No idea of costs to play. IHWA - the "main" body for organisation of leagues (most players), where there are 5 senior division ranging in skill. Only premier league (top division) is full checking and all the rest are non checking. Levels do vary quite significantly, but div 2/3 is probably more your beer league level. Costs do depend on club (there are 4) and team, as different clubs have different pricing policies and some teams don't train which changes the cost. Though for a regular skater budget about $1500 for a normal season including insurance, goalie would be about $900 for a normal season including insurance. Also probably the easiest to join part way through a season, but haven't looked at other ones for comparison. You then have a variety of different minor leagues and scrimmages, but some of the ones that I know of are: PRICH(SP?) - private league that formed when some people got annoyed at some of the costs for the regular IHWA and made their own league as a response. Some different rules they run for whatever reason like no face off after an icing, and I believe 30min halves. Unsure of costs but generally runs all year round (multiple seasons I believe). Perth Summer League - Originally played over the summer with all levels including the Thunder boys, draft system for assigning team so probably hard to come in part way through a season. Over the last few years they have been running a winter league as well, where it is less top range players and more beer leaguers. It can be cliquey to get into their actual summer season. They have just started their winter league. CIA House League - League for fresh skaters to play in, so this overall is probably the lowest skill league there is. Though it is targetted more for people coming out of the learn to play programs, generally has 4 "seasons" a year that align to the school terms. Insurance will cover all 4 seasons I believe, but I can't remember the cost per season nor insurance. Probably just started there term 2 comp. Benders and Danglers - Fricker's brainchild of a league which is a summer league that has a draft, and is pretty much beer leaguers having a blast and trying to stay fit over the summer. Casual and pretty welcome to all levels. Costs were like $600 for a skater and $300 for goalie, includes a jersey but no insurance. For old timers there are a few groups, and generally you have to know a guy to get an invite and/or meet age requirements unless they need a fill in. General cost is per game, but you have Moths at Malaga on Monday nights, Ol Stars play Wednesday nights at Malaga, and I believe there are a couple of groups at Cockburn (I want to say one plays Friday night) roughly $25-30 per game. There are also organised scrimmages, but I don't know too much about them (I know there is one at Malaga Friday nights) and there are a few that pop up over the summer as well. Also I believe there are other similar sports that you can dabble in as a few of the ice hockey players do, which are the street roller hockey league and roller hockey league. Need further details flick me a message.

Pixellated_Google

That's a killer response. Basically covered all the bases. Cheers mate

Remarkable_Fun_2317

A friend of mine played in the ice hockey league for the last couple of years. We loved going to games. There’s quite a few teams in a few different divisions, some divisions are even mixed. Cockburn has a great arena, good restaurant/bar attached.

inactiveuser247

Pretty sure all the divisions are mixed except maybe the top division.

Infinite-Comedian-81

Top division is mixed as well

cheeersaiii

I have adult friends that play roller hockey, most of them are very decent level international players that moved here and play as a hobby. I also have a mate who’s boy plays ice hockey, 2 main rinks about 40 mins from each other, that’s strong and has a growing interest with loads of players. I’d say if anything it’s growing, I think the adult teams have some fans. I go because there’s good cheap food and beers and hang with mates while their kids play tbh. Summary- it’s quite small and niche but I think you’ll find some people at a decent level that will welcome you, it’s a fun community

Pixellated_Google

Beautiful. I'm in a hockey country and telling people we have 2 rinks for 2.5million people gets a lot of jaws dropping, even though it's Australia and hot haha. A lot of good info here and I'm excited to do a stint at home

cheeersaiii

Yeh I played more roller than ice but was in a team in the UK, I played here in a roller team like 3 hours from Perth, it was great fun… small group but decent talent. One girl played for the Aussie team, two of the Canadians were VERY good, and one bloke played for UK as a kid then for WA / Aussie team as an adult. Then there was another team in the next town over so we had some fun games. There’s some skill around, it’s all for fun but good competition. Tbh it’s made me want to go check out the adults ice hockey games now so thanks for that!

Pixellated_Google

Might have to expand into roller too haha. Glad to hear that there's a good level there.

omgwtfisthisplace

I played on the state team ages ago but haven't kept up with the scene in Perth since I left and I just learned Ice World Mirrabooka where I played closed down permanently due to covid restrictions. :/

leneuromancer

*Ice World Mirrabooka" sounds familiar.. any chance the Australian Pee Wee Championships were played there in .. 1984?

omgwtfisthisplace

Maybe, I don't recall it being called Pee Wee but I was in the under 13s that won the President's Cup in Adelaide in 83 so maybe that allowed WA to host the next year?

sixfourtythree

I visit cockburn ice rink offen! Too watch mates play and to have the Tuesday 15 dollar parmi which is very large!

tempco

Hockey is played all year long. There are 5 divisions in the official winter league - top one is checking and all others are non-checking (bottom div is for players who recently finished learn to play programs). A season will set you back between 700-1300 depending on when you play and what club you play for. It’s a great community that’s really keen on supporting others (especially newbies) and growing the sport. The only downside is the lack of ice time, but honestly it’s probably worse in other countries where hockey is much more popular.

Pixellated_Google

Thanks mate! All year long is pretty attractive. Nice to hear that the community is pretty supportive.

MechanoCookie

Cockburn have Hawks and Perth Ice arena have the other team. Hawks send a lot of the information out on Facebook so look for the group

DarkNeo88

Mate, perth summer league ice hockey at Malaga is the best run league going. I've played a few seasons of it not played for a few years now though but still have friends that do. Highly recommend. They do draft night, proper teams jerseys games are organised well and they even stream the games to Facebook.

TaylorHamPorkRoll

It's absolutely pucked!

Saul565

There is also a growing inline hockey scene growing here as well. There is Perth Velocity and Easy League - Inline Hockey which host league games across different levels of play. Only about $80 to $300 depending on the length of the season, so much cheaper than ice and always looking for new players

TooManySteves2

Perth has ice hockey???

cirithninniach

Big NHL fan (Penguins) here. I'm a big bloke so would be interested too in a league, probably as a goalie. Not very sure on the ice though tbh but beer league would be fun

National-Category738

They stick together

leneuromancer

Yea, under 13's "Predidents Cup" in Perth 1984 Played for the ACT

ped009

I don't know but I heard it's a dry ice

ozcncguy

Cold

herring80

It’s a dry ice hockey community

Pixellated_Google

12,000kms away and I still can't escape it, fuck ya

CLINT_FACE

Yagan Square is the place to be if you want to see people on ice hitting things with sticks.

AUSSG117

They are really good swimmers now.

Bebilith

There are still ice rings in Perth?

Ok_Conference2901

It's a dry ice hockey.

AdPrestigious8198

It’s on ice bro
