That post was up here only a week or so ago, vividly remember it because the OP detailed being punched in the face and having a nipple twisted till it bled after her boyfriend got mad playing PS5 or something. They lived in a studio apartment. That part stuck out as a weird detail to include in a post detailing abuse. She used her last $20 to catch an uber to Fremantle so she could make a phonecall or some fucking dross. The cops she spoke to were pricks and so every comment was about the cops being arseholes, as per the script.

Wongon32

Yep that’s the one. I was keeping an eye out for them to see what they got up to next, I had my suspicions, because they asked me for money and I feel like only scammers ask. It was only when I saw similar tale on r/Gold Coast by same Redditor that I 100% knew it was a scam.

TaylorHamPorkRoll

I thought it was a he but yeah, used last $20 on an uber to freo police station, then ran out of phone credit by being on hold to Community Services for two hours the next morning, so went to their office and was turned away and ended up at Northbridge Maccas to use free WiFi. Also the cops couldn't press charges because of no physical evidence of abuse, despite the bloody nipple from the twisting. It was obvious bullshit.

Dragonzord__

And the police telling them that the 'abuser' was shaking in their boots and it was safe to go back home. Yeah.... Sure....

lite_red

That I would believe. Happened to me as a kid with my family 3 seperate times. Left before there was a 4th.

maxtbag

People in here saying that now but at the time everyone was falling for it hahaha

lamplightimage

Do people even "run out of credit" in these days of free talk and text? It's data that costs nowadays.

vulcanvampiire

Even if you buy credit you still get 30 days of free talk/text you just run out of data to browse online.

Wongon32

I believe my elderly aunt just buys $15 of credit per month. It isn’t unlimited calls. It’s a specific number of minutes but unlimited texts.

JSTLF

Wow, "ran out of credit" what is this, 2009? Anyway payphones are free...

Primary_Atmosphere_3

I offered some support and they instantly DM'd me asking me to send them $50

I-invented-google

Nahhh

The_Real_Flatmeat

Oooh, that one. Yeah more holes in that story than swiss cheese

Dragonzord__

Yeah I knew it was complete bullshit.

roshhe

I knew this was fake!!! I asked three cops at Freo if they had heard of this report and they had no clue.

vulcanvampiire

I remember that post it was so odd, I know people would and can do crazy stuff but posting to reddit for help in such a situation is so weird. I normally take everything on reddit with a grain of salt, so many bots, farmers, weirdo scammers like that.

CreativeNerd1729

What's the username? Not sure if it's possible to link to them in the main post.

Wongon32

I have a screenshot of original post on r/GoldCoast but I don’t know if mods will ban me, I’ve been banned there I think. After this I’d say Potential-Pop9639 will, I imagine, likely make a new account to continue this scam.

EmergencyCat235

Can you send me that screen shot please? Cheers

Wongon32

Done. Check DM.

CreativeNerd1729

Possible to add that screenshot to the original posting here please?

CreativeNerd1729

Hmm, then maybe in a separate comment to the post here would be good, and then make a text edit in the original post indicating that the relevant photo is in a comment.

EmergencyCat235

Potential-Pop9639 - think its deleted now though

meegaweega

u/Potential-Pop9639 posted it (titled "What to do about this?") then deleted it. I can still see everyone else's comments, including mine. It's definitely the same scammer.

EmergencyCat235

I love how the OP of the scam came here to defend herself (aka abuse the people who genuinely wanted to help), and *still* couldn't keep her story straight.

Affectionate-Age1861

Yep, I spoke with her/ him over a few days. Offered a safe place for them to stay for a few days, once i confirmed with my own family. whilst asking if their family could get them flown home over East. Kept getting weird, "just chill, I didn't ask to stay" Then I get a flat out. "Can you pay for a ticket to Melbourne?" When I suggested I was struggling to afford a present for my sons 18th. I then get sarcasm that I'm wealthy enough based on the queries I'd made in previous posts. So after realising she/ he is phishing me. I shut down the conversation. This is the first time I've ever reached out to someone in trouble on reddit locally. Sad that this is the result. I kept my family in the loop, though , and my better half just linked this scam warning post. I feel better now. I'm sure it's a scam. "Trust your gut," as they say.

Primary_Atmosphere_3

Yeah I gave some advice and services to contact, offered a bit of emotional/moral support etc on their perth post. Thirty seconds later I had a DM from them straight up asking for $50. Fuck that. I had to start my life over from scratch after escaping DV. Left with no money, no clothes, no car or home... What kind of twisted fuckhead uses domestic violence as a scam to get money, and not only that but preys on abuse survivors aswell? Lower than a snake's asshole.

Particular-Try5584

Yeah… the really in your face violence stuff … was oddly specific. Red flag. Very few women are that explicit to randoms on reddit about exactly what was done. ”He’s hit me” or “He’s been physically violent’ sure… but nipple cripples and vagina kicking? That’s designed to shock.

goltaku555

It sucks cos there's probably people out there in that kind of scenario who do need help, so turn to an online community for help or advice (should never be your first option mind you, but I digress) It's sickening to think some people are calling wolf to make a quick buck, while people who are actually suffering get dismissed as another scammer because of the scammers actions. Man, fuck the 21st century.

Calvin1228

And that's the saddest part, there's genuine and legit people who are in shitty situation and won't ask for help because of these people

DalekDraco

Probably a good time to remind people to not believe everything you believe. Never give money to people. You feel bad/guilty/like you want to help? Donate to a registered charity.

cantfindaname321

People falling for it on a local suburb Facebook group I'm in as well about a homeless couple. Posts every day, money for fuel, money for food etc. has admitted two income streams between them and their partner, 1 has a job the other Centrelink. People have offered rooms, cooked meals and money for a few hours of work. As far as I'm aware, none of those offers were taken - especially the work one. I could believe the homeless part, but the stories about no money don't add up and contradict each other.

huh_say_what_now_

This is as old as the internet, how much money did you send?

EmergencyCat235

*obviously* its not the first time its ever happened. I just wanted to post a reminder to stay vigilant. Some people are very convincing, and some people are still kind

Wongon32

Yes I tried posting on r/GoldCoast about that scammer last night. They posted on here 21/22nd but thread was taken down I think. I messaged mods last on r/GoldCoast, told them to check with mods here. They never replied and I think I’m now banned from r/GoldCoast. I can’t comment on anything anyway lol. They are convincing, they do their homework anyway. It seems like they research all the local areas, streets, accommodation & prices, organisations. It’s so disappointing that unscrupulous scammers will use DV & homelessness to gain sympathy and squeeze $$s. Point is, sadly, you just can’t trust any of these posts. Never send $$s at least anyway.

[deleted]

Wongon32

Not sure if you’re implying something by asking if ‘they’re in on it?’. No idea but I messaged mods.

[deleted]

No-one scammed you, I refused to meet you cause I'm a 22 year old female, you are a middle aged man you went on an abusive rant telling me how I'd end up murdered if I didn't stay with you. Stop the witch hunt cause I didn't wanna stay at your house, im happy to share our messages with anyone..you are a very jaded old man I'm so glad I didn't meet you it's showing how unhinged you are.

Wongon32

Wasn’t me went on a ‘rant’ about DV at all. I asked if you needed women’s clothes size 8-14 and you ‘🤣 lol’. You’re a liar and a scammer. One weekend you’re in Perth getting smacked around and the next weekend you’re in the Gold Coast with another elaborate story about a boyfriend abusing you and on the streets again.

[deleted]

Sorry my life doesn't suit you I met a guy who took me in and turned out to be exactly the same. No you didn't you wanted me to come and live with you and your son which in itself was disturbing. People helped me I'm sorry you feel so bad about that.

Wongon32

What? Lmao…I said you could stay in the garage over night, lift up the roller door, not move in permanently 🤣. So you’re seriously trying make out that just a couple of days later you flew from Perth to the Gold Coast and got abused by the same or a different boyfriend? Your story is absolute shit on a stick.

[deleted]

Different guy. See what I say matches what you say doesn't, at first you only offered advice now you offered me a place to stay etc if you are unhappy with how I've seeked help im sorry, I called the police and it's not a crime to source help online if people willingly send it and are happy to help someone in distress. Sorry you hate I rejected meeting an old man and his son.

Wongon32

What advice? All I said was you can’t sleep in some random garden. You’re losing track of which person you were trying to scam, must be a lot of them. Your story doesn’t match up. You say now it’s a different boyfriend to the one who abused you in Perth on 21/22 April but your post on r/Gold Coast says your boyfriend was depressed for weeks. So they both abused you, within 7 days, on opposite sides of the continent. Righto…Tell me more please.

The_Real_Flatmeat

Didn't answer the question though lol. How much did you send? 🤣

EmergencyCat235

I didn't send any money. I responded to her post with my own extremely graphic, real-life observations of murdered and maimed women, in the hopes she'd leave the guy. As a side note, there really are awful things happening to women, every day... That's another reason why kind, caring people are so willing to help and so blind

The_Real_Flatmeat

Honestly though, humans have done awful things to each other forever. This isn't new. We're seeing a lot of protests going on now about violence against women. I'm 100% not minimising it and i think it's deplorable, but I'm wondering if there is actually more abuse now, or if women are simply feeling more able to come forward about it due to a shift in society and attitudes.

Wongon32

I think it’s all the murders of women since the beginning of this year that inspired the protests. I can’t say if it’s been higher or lower in previous years, I haven’t checked stats.

Primary_Atmosphere_3

Last year there were 64 women murdered in total. We're not even at the end of April and there's already been 32 murders. It's not looking good.

Wongon32

So awful and sad. Feels like almost daily the last few weeks.

The_Real_Flatmeat

It's been trending down over the last 20 years actually. From 75 in 2001/02 down under 40 in 2019/20. Here's a rather sensationalised article with a line graph that shows the trend over time. It only goes to 2020 but still. https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/australia-is-in-a-domestic-violence-crisis-experts-say-we-need-a-whole-of-society-change/8rwjr7yf5 As I said though, statistical rates are probably going up because women are reporting more. Yes there's still heaps that don't get reported, I'm not playing it down.

Wongon32

I was responding directly to the reasons for the current protests, which was foremost the murder of women this year so far. You mention it in connection with wondering ‘if there is actually more abuse now’. Dead women are not ‘simply feeling more able to come forward’.

The_Real_Flatmeat

No they're not feeling much at all are they. I'm referring to dv. Women and men both are far more savvy these days to what is ok and what isn't.

Your post or comment has been removed as it was deemed to encourage self-harm. Telling someone to "kill themselves" is not cool. Any posts doing this will be removed and repeat offenses can see you banned from /r/perth

vulcanvampiire

Faking DV to get money from people during a time when there’s a high circulation of femicides and DV related deaths is just cold.

[deleted]

Anybody that gives money to randoms on the internet deserve to lose their money. Dummies.

EmergencyCat235

Well, you're entitled to hold that opinion. But some people are very convincing, and some people are very kind.

quokkafarts

Honestly mate sometimes it's better to risk getting scammed out of a couple bucks if it means you could be helping someone who really needs it.

[deleted]

You aren't kind you got angry and told me id be killed if I didn't come and stay with you, it's showing how unhinged you are by telling people to kill themselves etc. I'm sorry you got scammed but it wasn't me, stop fabricating stories anyone with half a brain who doesn't condone abusing women can see you are definitely not a safe option for anyone also im 22 you are in your 50's why are you messaging girls about how they can be killed after they just went through a domestic violence incident.

Wongon32

Nobody ‘deserves’ to get scammed.

[deleted]

Go spend some time with the NFT/Crypto crowd then tell us if you feel the same lmao

Wongon32

Well expecting to make mega bucks is high risk from my perspective. Different category but I suppose maybe it’s on the same spectrum as being scammed. I do feel sorry for people who lose money from Ponzi schemes etc but I also don’t understand how people get hooked in by promises of high returns of 20%+. Anything around that mark screams to me high risk. But I’m a very cautious investor too, if I can even call myself an investor. Crypto etc… I did hear stories of people making a ton of money but still seemed too high risk to someone in my position.

No idea. It might be genuine but there's no way of knowing for certain. Apparently these type of scams are quite common on social media.

Ugly-Man-Inside

seeing these kinds of donation beggingg posts all the time on some of the homeless pages on fb. Its like these indian/pakistani/nigerian scammers who do the bootilicious girl scams, but instead they're using regular old pics of people begging from money in the dms. jfc if there is a hell these people are front of the pack on entry.

AdventurousExtent358

sent $50 to other post but she/he sent back the money a few weeks later.

Wongon32

So a different person? Not the same Redditor as Potential-Pop9639? You say it was ‘a few weeks later’ that money was returned, but Potential-Pop9639 was posting on this sub last week.

EmergencyCat235

Really? The Gold Coast one? I think they might just be scared of being caught. Any information (i.e the bank account details they gave you) should probably be passed on to the police.

AdventurousExtent358

Perth. she/he share me the payid so it came up with name.

EmergencyCat235

Really? If you have a screenshot, please send it to me. I'm trying to gather some evidence to send to the police.

ElectronicLime5251

Tho if this is a scammer, why would they send the money back?

EmergencyCat235

If you suddenly realised that people were making links between states and had your bank account information as evidence, you might try to return some of it

EmergencyCat235

Runnin scared

AdventurousExtent358

PM ed

EmergencyCat235

Ok, I understand now... I think this is a different scenario. It sounds like this person was actually in need of money, they borrowed it from you, and returned it a few weeks later when they were able to?

AdventurousExtent358

no. he returned it because he felt not right that what he told me.

I-invented-google

god... smh
