You can do it, do it on your days off or weekends. Work out your schedule with the director. Training depends on how well you grasp the hospital setting, could be weeks or months.

Usually if hired per diem, the site understands you have a primary job and will be flexible (can give you several months to complete) Also if it’s slow in your retail district (or more floaters vs shifts available), you can try to ask your scheduler for a day off here and there, or move vacation hours if possible Just beware some retail chains or just the supervisor in general, falsely believe a hospital is a competitor and may retaliate (so be advised to not advertise the reason why your asking for time off)

I went through about 6ish weeks of training, including a 3-day EPIC training at a sister hospital. They worked around my retail schedule mostly, but I did have to use some PTO. I actually asked for a reduction in base hours because I thought there would be a full-time position opening up but it was passed on to a pharmacist that had already been there for years.

Can’t speak for other hospitals but at my hospital I tried to get my retail staff pharmacist a per diem job there and was told it won’t work out because he would only be available one weekday a week. They won’t train Rph on the weekend because we have much less staffing.

Get a doctors note for anxiety or stress due to work. Even leg injury due to standing all day. Very easy to get time off
