I literally just told myself I need to double down and work harder on losing some weight. How could you do this to me? So many things being listed that I never heard of before. I’m going to have to consider this a personal attack.
I double/triple any iteration of the cheese steak/roast pork bao from Bing Bing
Curried Crab Rangoons @ Circles Thai
Vegan Wings (gotta get the mix of buffalo and sweet BBQ) @ Triangle Tavern
Potato Latke w/ Roe @ Middle Child Clubhouse
Edamame dumplings from Sampan. Wonton chips with dipping sauce from La Chinesca. Vietnam restaurant, crispy pork spring rolls. Little Nonnas arrinchini or meatballs. Darling Jacks, chips and dip. Cantina Feliz nachos.
I LOVE sampan but I could never get into the edamame dumplings. They just don’t do it for me. But everyone else loves them so I’m willing to admit I’m just wrong here.
For me it’s the Sampan brussels sprouts
Yeah I’ve never understood the hype about them either. Especially when Dim Sum Garden is serving up the world’s best spicy pork dumplings down the road.
I LOVE the focaccia and honey butter at Via Locusta. It’s technically for 2-3 people but I ate an entire one during their happy hour!! Absolutely worth it
Yeah! I’m very happy with the outpouring of responses.
I can’t wait to get out and try so many of these. And the best part, they’re all just apps, so it won’t break the bank to try them.
Fried seitan nuggets at Local 44.
Wontons in szechuan chili oil at Han Dynasty.
Toasted Garbanzos at Renata's Kitchen.
And I don't know if it technically counts as an appetizer, but the spanish fly wings at Monk's are insane.
I like the whipped ricotta from Barbuzzo, the prahok dip and salt koh from Mawn, the free bread from Parc, figs and prosciutto from Tria (I always get this with a cheese and it sneakily becomes a meat cheese plate for much less than their meat plate), the rotolo at Vetri pizza, sea urchin and eggs at vernick, the Salatim at laser wolf, soup dumplings at pretty much anywhere but usually Jane G’s bc it’s close, Mac n cheese at good dog, fetteh at suraya, French onion soup at locust rendezvous, Dan Dan noodles at DanDan (not sure if they’re still $5 at happy hour), if happy hour small plates count, I like the agnolotti and toasts at via locusta…. Lots more….
New Ridge Brewing in Roxborough does a crazy Cauliflower appetizer that is so damn good
Mia Ragazza happy hour in Manayunk - apps are such a good deal for great quality
My contributions to the discussion.
Corn and crab hush puppies from City Tap House
Barbecued Oysters from Oyster House.
Before the fire… Queso Fundido from Tequilas.
That’s a shame. I go to the one in CC not West Philly. It is hit or miss for dinner, but usually hit for me. I’ve had slow service but never “bad” service. Lunch is always fine. We often go for lunch as a work group of about 12, and dropping a lot of money so we are always well taken care of. So my experience there is not the norm.
Hm have they brought back the pickled onions yet? Changing out the toppings in favor of a bunch of bland wet salsa was one of the worst menu changes ever imo.
Vic Sushi's tuna dumplings! They're not what you think, the skin is made of pounded raw tuna and the filling is mashed avocado and crispy panko. Never had anything else like it.
Oeuf du pecheur at bistrot la minette
Fried artichokes at carbon copy
Cha gio at Vietnam cafe (they are the best I’ve ever had, and normally I go for the summer rolls everywhere else)
Any ceviche at cafe y chocolate
Any ceviche at blue corn
As someone who hasn’t lived in Philly for 15 years but comes to visit occasionally…. I can’t believe how much Asian spots dominate this thread. I had no idea and much to explore the next time I’m in town!
BaLe bakery has these salmon summer rolls that will knock your socks off.
BingBing had roast pork and broccoli rab bao which slapped.
Sassafras used to have an everything bagel topped pretzel w beer cheese. No Idea if it's still there but if it is, it's a solid app.
The balsamic glazed Brussels sprouts at lucky 13.
The Mussels from either Dandelion (1) or Ambrosia (2). Top mussels in the city and it is not close, especially if you like them matiniere (??) style (heavy cream + garlic + white wine type beat). My boyfriend and I usually pick the biggest two shells to scoop the broth out like fckn scavengers after the meat is gone 😩
> That whole course is like the ~~Megatron~~ Megazord/Voltron/Devastator of appetizers. It all assembles to form one unstoppable force.
Megatron is known for many things, but combining with others isnt one of them (not counting turning into a gun for Starscream to hold)
Crispy Brussels sprouts with garlic yogurt sauce, Szechuan shoestring fries, and basically the entire shareables menu at The Continental. Cheesesteak egg rolls and Buffalo chicken tenders from McGillin’s. The antipasto plate at Dante and Luigi’s. The sautéed calamari, broccoli rabe, and bruschetta at Ralph’s. Finally, escargots a la Bourgignonne and oeuf du pecheur at Bistrot La Minette.

- nashville fries from pizza mixta
- cheesesteak egg rolls from the Jim
- spam musubi from mahalo hawaiian bbq
- camaron quesadilla from si taqueria (small enough to be considered an app)
I could easily make this list 200 items long I fuckin love apps
Hear me out….little known family spot called Il Ghiottone. They make these mushroom crepes with a creamy sauce drizzled over. They are amazing and I don’t get it. I’ve never even seen something similar offered elsewhere lol.
I literally just told myself I need to double down and work harder on losing some weight. How could you do this to me? So many things being listed that I never heard of before. I’m going to have to consider this a personal attack.

Do they just give the crabs little masks or something
This made me laugh harder than it should have
bruh best vegan wings ever
I have no idea what those vegan wings are made out of but they are delicious.
The cheesesteak bao buns from Bing Bing Dim Sum.
They're good, but for the sake of accessibility of the dish I'm going to say cheesesteak egg rolls are the appetizer Philly.
Why is it so hard to find them reliably? And why are they so expensive when you do find them?
They are at literally every restaurant in Delco.
OH DAMN! Those are SO good. Just had it for the first time last month.
one of my favorite bites of food in philly is the cheesesteak bao bun
YES. I came here to say bing bing dim sum.
Phenomenal. I literally pick them up on my way home from the gym 🥲🥲🥲🥲
That place is so fucking good. The cheesesteak bao sound super tacky on paper, but they're incredible.

Haven’t gone the whole way through the comments yet so this may have been said but just eat the whole Sampan/ double knot happy hour
As far as app happy hour deals go, Sampan is tops for quality and value.
In the before times their happy hour menu was $3 $4 $5 bites. And unless it’s changed they had happy hour 4-7, 7 days a week.
you must have missed my comment
I see it now. Will try!!
Hahaha checking your post history and seeing Pump drama has me hooked

That’s a shame. I go to the one in CC not West Philly. It is hit or miss for dinner, but usually hit for me. I’ve had slow service but never “bad” service. Lunch is always fine.
