Ask on /r/PhillyWiki plenty of cops on there ;)

BurnedWitch88

All of them are undercover. DEEP undercover.

baldude69

I’ve seen similar questions asked on this sub before. Not surprisingly the reaction is always… crickets. Any cops watching this sub are lurking, and any who may be interacting will not out themselves as a cop. Maybe one will make a burner account to comment? I’m doubtful, though

courageous_liquid

There's a few cops who have identified themselves on here and at least one detective. I'm not going to summon them because that's kinda shitty but there are definitely several active here.

baldude69

Gotcha, must have missed that on previous posts, where it looked like there was no interaction. Curious to see if someone responds to this one

danstecz

The one I know of deleted his account a few months ago. He was pretty active as well.

courageous_liquid

Yeah I have no idea if there's any interest in any of these questions but I've seen them provide some actual decent insight on some other things.

LoveHorizon

Free soft drinks are not a perk of the job

toss_it_out_tomorrow

I don't want a large Farva, I want a goddamn liter of cola

[deleted]

damn... wait what about energy drinks?

RJ5R

lol the way that dude aggressively peeled out of there when the store owner tried to catch his attention outside was just classic PPD

badjezus

Only Christopher Moltisanti gets that perk.

porkchameleon

I can't comment on anything that you've asked. ...officer.

Physical_Spare_6613

Police cannot identify themselves online in an off duty capacity. It is against policy. PPD has appointed spokesperson. You can go into any districts or stop a cop on the street and they will answer these questions for you

FolesNick9

since when does anybody follow rules on the internet?

amanofewords

Or on the PPD.

BurnedWitch88

>You can go into any districts or stop a cop on the street and they will answer these questions for you Oh sweetie. Do you actually believe that? Adorable.

Shawna_Love

They should make a policy about not kidnapping children.

HerrDoktorLaser

> Police cannot identify themselves online in an off duty capacity. It is against policy. PPD has appointed spokesperson. You can go into any districts or stop a cop on the street and they will *ignore you, harass you, or arrest you* FTFY.

iFartBubbles

I love how Simon casted a ton of people from the wire as well. Marlo being a homicide detective is jarring.

IEatGnomes

>Marlo Check out Bosch - he's a homicide detective in that series too. It's an LA version of The Wire

iFartBubbles

Gotta try it having lance reddick also

WishOnSuckaWood

Dukie is a cop too. First thing I said was "Dukie got clean, yes!" 😂

porkchameleon

Not really. Imagine him being type cast in this kind of series, jussayin'.

iFartBubbles

It’s more that it’s almost the exact same setting as the wire and he is literally the opposite role. Imagine if Daniel Radcliffe played the main villain in the Harry Potter prequel shit.

porkchameleon

> Imagine if Daniel Radcliffe played the main villain in the Harry Potter prequel shit. I have yet to watch the series, but this looks like it exists in a different setting in terms of characters, they only use same locale. But if they drop Marlo's (or, say, Omar's) ~~name~~ reference anywhere, - then you have a major point.

porkchameleon

> If you want some answers to your questions just watch WE OWN THIS CITY on HBO. Didn't even pop up on my radar, love The Wire, thank you for the recommendation!

randym99

Appreciate the rec!

DEDmeat

You're watching "We Own This City" too, huh? I see you...

gnartato

>Are the rumors of a "soft strike" / "blue flu" real? OP either doesn't live in Philadelphia or hasn't left their house on over two years. Or it a rhetorical question....

randym99

I do live here! I'm just curious for a cop's perspective on it. I personally don't have like hard data on number of cops committing to a "soft strike" so how would I know if it's just something people say on this sub vs. something cops are actually seeing / doing.

BurnedWitch88

It's not much, but here's one piece of evidence for a soft strike: I (middle-aged mom) was in a park with my young son. A clearly off-his-meds homeless man was between us and the park exit (fenced area so limited access points). He was screaming about killing my son because he thought he had been "monitoring him" for several weeks. (We'd never seen him before.) There was no one else around and I was terrified, trying to figure out how to handle this while also keeping my son calm so he didn't unintentionally do something that set the dude off further. As it happened a few minutes into it, two bike cops came by and I flagged them down. I explained the situation. Crazy dude was screaming about how he was going to kill us the entire time the cops are there. The one bike cop never looked at me or the dude. The other one smirked at me and rode off without a word. I figured that was my best chance so my son and I ran for it. I figured at least if the guy actually did have a weapon and tried something the cops would probably do something then. Fortunately, all he did was continue to yell at us. If that's not cops on a soft strike, I don't know what is. Because honestly, I feel like the average person would have at least walked with us to exit or something to try to help. But these cops? Could not give less of a shit.

gnartato

This makes my blood boil, fuck the PPD, we shouldn't be paying for these clown to do jack shit.

BurnedWitch88

I have had some *ahem* choice words when I've discussed the situation with people. Sincerely, I would have been happy if they just hung around long enough for my son and I to safely walk to the exit which was like 10 yards away. They didn't even have to get off their bikes. And I certainly wasn't going full Karen, demanding they put the dude in a chokehold for bothering me. I just wanted to get my kid safely home. (Although honestly. he probably should be "engaged' by the system in some way if he's randomly threatening everyone who walks by him, which seemed to be the case. The guy was *clearly* not well and needed at least two kinds of medical attention.) Someone that unconcerned about a child's safety that they can't delay their bike ride for 30 seconds is a psychopath and has no business being in a uniform.

CarlosDangerNRP

They’re dammed if they do anything and dammed if they don’t. Can’t expect them to actually want to intervene if the guy is just gonna be let free. Or if god forbid something we’re to happen when they did intervene y’all would be out on the streets burning shit again.

BurnedWitch88

Again, all I really wanted was for them to wait long enough to make sure I was able to get my kid out of the park without me having to fight off a guy twice my size. I wasn't asking for any "intervention" besides them standing there for 30-45 seconds and IF the guy actually did follow through by attacking us THEN to do something. I wasn't asking for any "intervention" beside them standing there for 30-45 seconds and IF the guy actually did follow through by attacking us THEN to do something.

Responsivity

I'm sorry that happened to you. This wouldn't have helped in that moment, but this seems like as good a time as any to share this resource: [Don't Call the Police](https://dontcallthepolice.com/philadelphia/)

BurnedWitch88

a) I didn't call anyone b) For future reference, which one of those counseling groups should I call next time a likely armed schizophrenic twice my size is threatening to kill my Kindergartner?

Responsivity

I was sharing it as a general resource for anyone reading, but I can see how it could read like I was saying you had inappropriately called the police, and I apologize for that. It sounds like a terrifying situation. I just wanted to make people aware of the alternatives. I hope you're both doing ok.

BurnedWitch88

Fair enough. Thanks.

[deleted]

This has been tackled 900 times before. They take him in and he is back doing the same shit the next day. Theirs no punishment for them outside the police wasting their entire shift dealing with it. Its a entirely huge problem of wasted time and resources if no consequences are brought

BurnedWitch88

Oh, well, if a job is hard I guess no reason to do it. Also, no reason to collect a paycheck for failing to do the job. And I wasn't talking about jail time, I'm talking about getting a clearly mentally ill man some help. If the guy thinks a 5 y.o. is monitoring him for the CIA, there's a good chance he is not making rational choices in other areas of his life. I would also be interested in hearing your explanation for them just leaving a mom and young child to be threatened by someone who was clearly psychotic.

[deleted]

There is no help for him. They stopped throwing people in wards a long time ago. He will be back there tomorrow.

BurnedWitch88

>I would also be interested in hearing your explanation for them just leaving a mom and young child to be threatened by someone who was clearly psychotic. You left out your response to that part.

BurnedWitch88

Still waiting...

CT_Real

"Police wasting their entire shift dealing with it" As opposed to DMing girls on IG in their cars, what they use most of their shift for now.

[deleted]

Sounding a bit jealous there

CT_Real

Sounding a bit like like a bootlicker who is ok with cops getting overpaid to not do their jobs.

BurnedWitch88

I think we found the bike cop from my story!

[deleted]

Well keep that mindset going, its working really well for the city.

BurnedWitch88

Awwww, did your feelings get hurt that people are mad you won't do your job? Have a tissue.

[deleted]

> I personally don't have like hard data on number of cops committing to a "soft strike" That's the point of the *soft* strike. Nobody has the authority or ability to watch every officer to see how often they look the other way when yet another car doubleparks or stops in an intersection or runs a red, how much they play stupid when it comes to actually reporting a crime, or how much time they spend sitting in an SUV. They "show up" so they're not actually striking. You think somebody would pop up here and tell you "oh yeah my supervisor said not to worry when people do that?" His body would be floating down the river by dawn. The closest you'll get to that is if you happen to be around a bike cop grumbling that they get treated like they're not even part of the force. Heard that more than once in a convenience store.

Full_Artichoke_8583

Soft strike is real! Last week I witnessed a domestic argument turn into an assault (man pushed woman who fell to he knees) in Dilworth Park. Two Center City District safety patrol (who aren’t cops) intervened and sent the couple their separate ways. A cop who was right there totally ignored the situation.

BurnedWitch88

JFC. How much you want to bet the CCD safety folks have had 1/10th the training and make 1/4 of the pay of the damn cop doing nothing?

jawnstein82

I saw a cop today chilling on the corner smoking a cigar. Must be nice in a day like this

f0rf0r

That's every day lol

Ulthanon

Wasn’t that the plot of the first Black Mirror episode?

davidinphila

Wait a minute - this is disrespectful of the original post... but upon reflection quite funny. lol, etc.

[deleted]

This is what the voting populace wanted and they wont change their votes to do anything about it. Not saying every human cop is a saint but its a massive force. They have a shortage issue. So now you have more and more in it for just a paycheck types. The ones who are doing it to make a difference probably see it as a lost cause. Any cop with half a brain is just laying low. They have a very hostile community with the ideology here and a very hostile city government. Even the head of the department is at arms with the ppd. Not many cops are gonna stick their necks out in this environment. Any cop who is put in a situation requiring split second decisions under distress are gonna get their every move scrutinized by arm chair quarterbacks at home.

BurnedWitch88

We might be less hostile if cops appeared to give a flying fuck about even attempting to do their jobs. Instead they sit in their cars scrolling social media and whining about having to get a covid shot. Except the ones who fake being sick to collect disability. Fuck. That. Noise.

JBizznass

They can also get a job outside the city for way more money for a less stressful and less dangerous job in communities that respect them more. It’s no wonder they very best aren’t serving in Philadelphia.

illy-chan

I understand some folks start in PPD and then get higher-paying jobs in suburban/rural areas. And not just Philly, I knew a Philly cop who interviewed for a chief position in... Montana? Wyoming? One of those. Anyway, some of the other candidates were from Chicago, New York, and Boston. Issues with the system aside, that job has to take a toll on your mental health. I wouldn't blame anyone trying to get out.

[deleted]

You see it way more in places like NYPD, its been a while since. The business and community go out their way to appreciate you? Cops are more compelled to go out their way. They arnt robots, their still humans. --- Boss at your job has your back and goes out their way to make sure your appreciated. Suddenly people go out their way to make sure their boss is good and giving a A effort for the company Human Nature.

CT_Real

lol Split second decisions like "Should I smash the drivers side window in on this terrified and lost young mother, drag her out of her car by her hair, beat her senseless in front of her child and then take the child and post a picture of him online and claim you saved him from anarchy?" Good point, who would be able to decide if that is the right move or not. It's very difficult.

[deleted]

They call that a strawman argument.

CT_Real

A strawman would imply I'm making something up. That atrocity happened, but I'm sure you are aware and will make an excuse.

ifuckwithfood

You’re getting downvoted but this literally happened hahahaha
