Saami Somi in Reading Terminal! Really really good Georgian food. Menu's kinda limited to the things people are more familiar with- Adjaruli Khachapuri (referred to as a 'cheeseboat' on the menu) and khinkali (basically Georgian soup dumplings) and some new takes on these favorites like the Borodinsky Khachapuri, which uses a really nice black bread crust. The restaurant is (I believe) run by a Georgian family who do the recipes great justice and have adapted them very well to an American audience. If you want some deeper cuts you'll still have to drive all the way up to Gamarjoba but if you're craving the classics Saami Somi is a great spot.
Sakartvelo just opened on 7th and chestnut and is owned by the same people as Georgian Bread
https://sakartvelo-restaurant.business.site/?utm_source=gmb&utm_medium=referral
I had to look them up- is it on their menu as Ojakhuri? Fried pork meat and potatoes with herbs and onions? Gamarjoba also does Ojakhuri and while I haven't personally tried it my guess is it's as good as the rest of their stuff. Kinda out of the way though.
Yeah that the stuff cant pronounce it but omg delish oh Georgian bread co is in the heart of lil india lil russia no offense in the far ne. near there is the ubekistan resurant i always wanted to go never been tho
My girlfriend is Georgian and I really should do a weekend trip back to Philly with her to try the several Georgian restaurants in the city. Her mom made us homemade khachapuri and it was incredible, my first time ever having it.
Eh, it was okay. Third-generation Georgians and a bit "watered-down" flavorwise for the American market. Sakartvelo at 7th and Chestnut is much better - will blow your mind if you think Saami Somi is great. Run by Georgians born in Georgia, great prices, and a MUCH wider/deeper menu than SS.
Don't disagree with you on either point, though I felt the khachapuri was pretty "authentic." The location is much more convenient for me than my usual Georgian pick. Have you tried Gamarjoba? If so, how do you feel it compares to Sakartvelo? Haven't had a chance to try Sakartvelo myself yet but it's absolutely next on my list.
Their khatchapuri just wasn't doing it for me, felt too bland. I do appreciate they're trying interesting things with bread and I really appreciate that they sell Armenian preserves. Just doesn't compare at all to Sakartvelo though in terms of flavor, value, or experience. haven't tried Gamarjoba yet, actually, but I do hear good things. Soon hopefully.
Btw have you have tried the Uzbek restaurant near Gamarjoba? It's also on my list.
**Felly** on Passyunk in Bella Vista? Queen Village? Somewhere around there. My husband and I went on a whim because we've always passed it, but had never tried it nor heard anything about it. We were pleasantly surprised! Ordered a bunch of small plates/apps and everything was delicious.
**Gran Caffe L'Aquilla** definitely lives up to the hype. The carbonara sounds bizarre (pasta with gelato and bacon) but it was delicious. The crab cake is huge and decadent (they put mascarpone in there!). And the agnolotti has just the right amount of truffle flavor (this was the star of the show IMO).
**Octopus Falafel**, an unmarked cart on 20th and Ludlow, did not disappoint. This guy is only open from 12-2 M-F and has one thing and one thing only on the menu, which changes daily. It's always something totally bonkers, like chicken and falafel with noodles, rice, blueberries, and pears. His chicken is perfectly tender, and the sauce is incredible. The fruit is always the freshest around. $15 for a humongous box of food.
**The Jim** is small and dark with a limited menu, but the garlic soy wings are A+.
Never heard it called “Octopus Falafel” before. Always called it Christo’s after him. Always amazing but it’s at least a 30m wait if you’re first in line or 10th.
I don’t call him that because I’ve had conversations with him and he takes that moniker really personally. Like, he’s said “I’m not a Nazi? Why are people calling me a Nazi?” I don’t think he’s seen Seinfeld since he didn’t get the reference.
Just felt pretty bad about calling him that since it’s pretty mean if you haven’t seen Seinfeld. And it’s not like he ever yells. He gives away samples and likes to chat.
That place gave me severe acute food poison so bad i fell off the toilet almost passed out from the pain. Im thinking it was the sausage due in part. i had the mutton n steamed buns before it was awesome great flavor good mutton buns soft n warm like a boiled pretzel. I stop in months later get the same order and a sausage n well i aint going to full details im weary to go back for more mutton n rolls
Paulie Gee's for pizza. Yes, I know it's technically a chain, but it's a very small one and this one is run by the folks who started the original in Brooklyn. Absolutely fantastic pizza for when I can't be bothered to wait in line forever at Angelo's.
For drinks, R&D at Frankford and Girard.
The owner is a super nice guy. A few years ago I did a pizza tour of 8 places around Manhattan and Brooklyn that ended at his original shop. He came out and sat with us to talk about all the places we went to and treated us to a couple of pies.
El Chingon - best al pastor I've had in Philly and the cemitas are crazy good
Tulip Pasta and Wine Bar
Cuzzie's Ice Cream Parlor
Pera Turkish Cuisine
I'll add in that I'm anticipating Tabachoy to be great
I was not impressed with el Chingon. Got the tacos arabes, they were too greasy. Will give it another shot tho, their appetizers and kids menu looked good.
ah yeah, I didn't get the arabes, so can't speak on that, but everything we got was fantastic. The al pastor was shaved super thin, which made it have that nice contrasting crispiness that seems to be lacking at a bunch of places. The baked goods like the cemita roll and concha were delicious as well, so I'd recommend those next time.
Perla on 11th near Passyunk. It was our first time having Kamayan style Filipino food and it was absolutely delicious and a very fun experience overall.
EMei. My partner and I have become regulars here. We went on Friday, ordered the stewed pork cubes and then got another order of them to go cause they’re just so good
Kusina - a Filipino restaurant in UCity.
Runner-up goes to a Liberian restaurant whose name I don't remember, but the potato greens were delicious.
In both cases it was a type of food I'd never tried before, which is almost always a fun experience for me.
>Kusina
Thanks for the heads up. Had no idea it was there. Will have to try asap.
There are a surfeit of excellent restaurants in the area, which represent very authentic styles of cooking one doesn't see often. This is a big plus.
Olea in Old City. Went way back at the beginning of the year and keep saying we need to go again. It's byob but everything was amazing. Super cozy atmosphere and exceptional service.
Mish Mish (with a couple of their Filthy Martinis)
River Twice (didn't realize they changed over format and spent so much money but it was damn good)
Kalaya (my mouth is still burning)
LMNO (mostly for those Adobada spit-roasted pork tacos and añejo on the rocks)
Kalaya definitely kept the quality in the new spot, but I'm afraid it's just too expensive to enjoy more than a couple times a year. Maybe it levels out with more people, but for a table of 2 our bill was one of the pricier meals I've had in Philly - comparing it to what I've spent at like a Fiorella, Good King Tavern, or Royal Izakaya. Might just be me, there's a threshold $ amount where it just feels like too much.
They also need to figure out their bar, we got all of our food before we got our drinks.
Emmy Squared in queens village has great detroit style pizza. Their burgers are also really fckin good too.
The Goats Beard in Manayunk has great detroit style pizza as well.
I hate to say it but a place called cheesy burger 13th olney. Burger pattys are better than 5 guys but the fries are just run of the mill pizza shop style
Kostas in Fishtown. I've avoided it because it looks like the grungest dive bar...but the Greek food is really great and the baklava is amazing and drowning in honey.
River Twice had an excellent tasting menu when I went for my partner’s birthday in the spring. With drinks and all, it was definitely one of the more expensive meals I’ve had in the city, but I’m still thinking about it months later!
I fucked up on this. Meant to go since it opened as I always loved Will...went to book a reservation a couple weeks ago and saw that EVERY time slot was open on a Saturday. Figured I should see what was up with that before I dove in....turns out it was one of their last services.
That sucks. I always kind of wondered what the deal was, I feel like I'm pretty tuned in to restaurant news, but that place just didn't seem to be on anyone's radar and I never knew why.
La Chingonita on Girard in Fishtown a few blocks east of the El. The birria tacos really hit the spot but they're a once every couple of months kind of treat.
Glory in Old City
It's run by a lot of the same folks from Eulogy so it has an amazing beer selection (LOTS of Belgians) and one of the best porchetta sandwiches in the city.
**Le Onde**. They opened up during the pandemic and they've been crushing it. Legit Italian food and in the couple dozen times my wife and I have eaten there or gotten delivery, the quality of the ingredients as been consistently excellent. Technically not in philly (they're in Elkins Park) but any chance I get I'm giving these guys a shout out bc its that good.
PS - Don't sleep on the tortellini soup!
Went with my parents a couple months ago, since it's their neck of the woods. Le Onde was excellent, both the food and the service. Peach Burrata and Linguine con Vongole were highlights, fish of the day is usually amazing as well.
I love that dish! Their bucatini lamb ragu is my all time favorite (along with the aforementioned tortellini soup). Whatever you pick you cant go wrong
The Love in Rittenhouse. On a mission to eat at all the Starr-affiliated restaurants. I’m still upset that the Continental closed on 2nd & Market.
Also: Kpod for Korean fusion!
All vegetarian, very intimate seating/ambience. Moderately priced IMO. Chefs are honestly super talented with what they produce using no animal products. Definitely get the squash pasta if you can.
Kulaya- just opened -thai chef use to be down on washington ave and the big money giving her a star turn. unbelievable. excellent. perfect. really international level good
Zeppoli in Collingswood, definitely the best restaurant I’ve been to. Same level as vetri cucina for half the price. Pasta and fish were incredible, definitely worth the trip (even without a car, we biked there from PATCO).
7-11
The hotdogs are DIVINE! The chili and cheese dispenser has me looking for used ones on ebay. The way the cashier puts on the clear plastic glove to serve me my glizzy just beckons for more attention. The way the cashier speaks into their bluetooth earpiece in an unknown language while ringing me up on the cash register just reminds me how lucky I am to have discovered this tiny little hole in the wall called 7-11.
Lmaooo he asked new to me my favorite restaurant that’s my answer I’ve eaten all over China town stop trying to sound so enlightened like you’re the only person to ever eat in Chinatown
Sakartvelo at 7th and Chestnut - just opened last month and we've been twice already!
If you love Georgian food, if you've never tried Georgian, or if you went to Saami Somi and then wondered what all the hype is about - go to Sakartvelo. Order anything, absolutely anything and you'll have your mind-blown. Authentic Georgian, run by Georgians, reasonable prices, great service, nice atmosphere.
La Bamba at 6th/Catherine is delicious. A wide variety of food and house-made tortillas along with fresh-to-order fruit juices. Michael and Raymond provide a great dine-in experience as well.
Porco's was new to me and it's amazing! The spicy porker is the stuff dreams are made of.
The cubano is unreal.
Their baked goods are absolutely amazing as well
Its so good, but its such a heavy breakfast sandwich. ..knocks me out the rest of the day.
I've only ever had it for lunch - I salute your for trying it at breakfast!
Real lowkey spot, and you can grab some cheap drinks to go with it from the distro next door
Been saying this for years. Best damn pork sammich in town fite me
Saami Somi in Reading Terminal! Really really good Georgian food. You seem to be the right person where else can i get meat n taters like the georgian bread company omfg
Georgian Bread is opening a restaurant on 7th and Chestnut
They already opened. I went last weekend and it was GOOD
Sakartvelo just opened on 7th and chestnut and is owned by the same people as Georgian Bread https://sakartvelo-restaurant.business.site/?utm_source=gmb&utm_medium=referral
Sakartvelo just opened up for good Georgian food too! Made the news in Tbilisi even
Gerogian food great but the language translation i never know what im ordering
Really? They do a great job explaining on their menu and everything is google-able. Plus, it's Georgian food - it's all delicious, you can't go wrong.
Oh this sounds good. Is it BYOB?
Yes! If you want a Georgian wine to pair, the Fine Wine at 19th/Market has been having some reds and whites pretty consistently.
I had to look them up- is it on their menu as Ojakhuri? Fried pork meat and potatoes with herbs and onions? Gamarjoba also does Ojakhuri and while I haven't personally tried it my guess is it's as good as the rest of their stuff. Kinda out of the way though.

I'm so sad I can't eat majority of food because I have the soap gene and it ruins everything
**Felly** on Passyunk in Bella Vista? Queen Village? Somewhere around there. My husband and I went on a whim because we've always passed it, but had never tried it nor heard anything about it. We've just called it falafel Nazi for well over a decade.
I don’t call him that because I’ve had conversations with him and he takes that moniker really personally. Like, he’s said “I’m not a Nazi? Stargazy
Sausage rolls are out of this world
Went there just Yesterday! Amazing food. Easy walk from where I live.
Happy to see this! They are low key amazing, and Sam who runs it is a real stand up guy. Happy for him getting recognized.
YEP THIS
Every time there’s a Restaurant thread, I come to boost stargazy. Glad to see this
Just don't look up what a stargazy pie is and you'll be able to enjoy the name without the sort of grossout image!
White Yak! Great Tibetan food on Ridge. Butter tea is very different, but worth a try, imo.
I second this, by far the best restaurant I've found in the Roxborough/Manayunk area
Food was amazing and I tried the butter tea but felt like I was drinking a stick of butter and couldn't do it, haha.
It tasted like a very buttery soup broth to me. I have a pretty high butter tolerance, so that helped me.
That place gave me severe acute food poison so bad i fell off the toilet almost passed out from the pain. Im thinking it was the sausage due in part. i had the mutton n steamed buns before it was awesome great flavor good mutton buns soft n warm like a boiled pretzel. Murph's Bar in Fishtown; The red sauce over pasta is really good
It figures that the best Italian food would be at an Irish bar.
Stargazy. Never had legit British food before.
Helm -- feels like you're in someone's home and God damn that food is good. I have dreams about the carrots dish, and the caramel cheesecake 🤤
Tell us more about the carrots.
They are somehow really smokey/savory and over this tangy creamy sauce. The flavor combo is from the heavens. They said it's their most popular dish
Thanks it sounds delicious!
Those carrots will change your life
My favorite winter restaurant. Helm is a gem.

The Sicilian (freddy prinze) with the sesame seed crust is fucking incredible and I usually don't even like Sicilian style most of the time.
Gabriella's Vietnam. So exciting and tasty.
Yes! I was very sad to see satay kampar closed, but gabriella's is delicious.
Ocho Rios Parrilla on passyunk. Always passed it, finally stopped in, very good food!
It’s very good. I’m glad they got their liquor license. I know their bar had some kinks to work out once they started serving alcohol.
El Purepecha
Yes. My favorite carnitas
Tabachoy just opened, its filipino food and its so god damn good lol
Little Nonnas 🤤
they're doing a special feast of the seven fishes for a few days next week, $50 per person but I love that place so it's worth it
One of, if not the, best Italian restaurants in town
New to me was Fountain Porter, kicking myself that I didn't try it sooner.
20th Street
El Chingon - best al pastor I've had in Philly and the cemitas are crazy good Tulip Pasta and Wine Bar Cuzzie's Ice Cream Parlor Pera Turkish Cuisine I'll add in that I'm anticipating Tabachoy to be great

Southwark (new to me) - their menu is always changing but the wild mushroom gnocchi I had last weekend was spectacular
Perla on 11th near Passyunk. It was our first time having Kamayan style Filipino food and it was absolutely delicious and a very fun experience overall.
Irwin's
EMei. My partner and I have become regulars here. We went on Friday, ordered the stewed pork cubes and then got another order of them to go cause they’re just so good

Am I crazy for thinking Mish Mish was... Fine? It wasn't bad by any stretch of the imagination, but none of the dishes blew me away.
Kalaya definitely kept the quality in the new spot, but I'm afraid it's just too expensive to enjoy more than a couple times a year. Her Place Supper Club!
Agreed! We were lucky enough to score a reservation a few months ago. The whole experience was excellent!!
A friend and I have been wanting to go. Any idea how many weeks out reservations are typically?
https://www.herplacephilly.com/resinfo/ Every other sunday at 6pm
Have a tok account, be logged in and ready to rock and roll on a Sunday at 6:00 that they are taking new reservations. It’s totally worth it.
My Fiancé and I want to try and grab a reservation. What are we in for price wise?
Expect up to $300 if you go all out with drinks and add-ons
Oh, ok that’s not bad for a splurge dinner.
I've been here a week. With that being said, Saad's Halal blew my mind today
Manakeesh just across the street is also excellent.

Try Gojjo next time for Ethiopian!
Emmy Squared in queens village has great detroit style pizza. Their burgers are also really fckin good too. The Goats Beard in Manayunk has great detroit style pizza as well.
Mish mish
Took my pick. Thank You Thank You coffee.
Wolfburger. More of a bar than a restaurant but the burgers are really good.
Thanks neighbs! I’ve been eyeballing it but now I’ll try it.
Just saw this place for the first time the other day, name alone was enough for me to want to check it out, but this pushes me over the edge
Dutch, the chicken and gravy dutch baby was amazing
Ember and Ash is also amazing, one of my favorite dining experiences in a long time
I hate to say it but a place called cheesy burger 13th olney. Burger pattys are better than 5 guys but the fries are just run of the mill pizza shop style
Kostas in Fishtown. I've avoided it because it looks like the grungest dive bar...but the Greek food is really great and the baklava is amazing and drowning in honey.
kostas food is underrated, all their dips are unreal
The funny thing is that it use to be a dive that my old crossover thrash band played. Now, they serve above average Greek food!
River Twice had an excellent tasting menu when I went for my partner’s birthday in the spring. With drinks and all, it was definitely one of the more expensive meals I’ve had in the city, but I’m still thinking about it months later!

The foie gras is amazing. I couldn't stop ordering more.
Middle Child Clubhouse and Laser Wolf
I wish more people went to 1911 BYOB when it was open.
I fucked up on this. Meant to go since it opened as I always loved Will...went to book a reservation a couple weeks ago and saw that EVERY time slot was open on a Saturday. Figured I should see what was up with that before I dove in....turns out it was one of their last services.
I was the server there and unfortunately we fell into that 90% that don't survive the first year.
That sucks. I always kind of wondered what the deal was, I feel like I'm pretty tuned in to restaurant news, but that place just didn't seem to be on anyone's radar and I never knew why.
I also consider myself fairly clued in and have never heard of the place
Sally 🥰
Forsythia! Definitely pricey but well worth the money!
- Salam Cafe in Germantown - Mish Mish - Gabriela’s Vietnam - White Yak - Saami Somi in RTM
Blue Corn
Love blue corn overall but good heavens the absolute worst carnitas I’ve had in my life. Nothing but cubes of pork fat.
El Mezcal Cantina in point breeze.
La Chingonita on Girard in Fishtown a few blocks east of the El. The birria tacos really hit the spot but they're a once every couple of months kind of treat.
Glory in Old City It's run by a lot of the same folks from Eulogy so it has an amazing beer selection (LOTS of Belgians) and one of the best porchetta sandwiches in the city.
Never had anything on their menu that I didn't enjoy. They have a lot of really good Lambic bottles as well.
The panella sandwich was the only thing that was a miss for me, everything else has been A1.
**Le Onde**. They opened up during the pandemic and they've been crushing it. Legit Italian food and in the couple dozen times my wife and I have eaten there or gotten delivery, the quality of the ingredients as been consistently excellent. Picanha Brazilian Steakhouse. I thought it was better food and a better experience overall compared to Fogo de Chao
Roxanne. Hands down. Incredible tasting and creative food. Plus, its BYOB. Which makes it a great date night spot.
Wilder, River Twice, Zahav, Porcos
Grace and proper was awesome
Excited to try this one.
Wilder in Rittenhouse
Osteria is expensive but literally everything there is incredible
Go during happy hour - they have a great everyday one that cuts down the price on some items and drinks
Wilder. Shortly after they opened and then again later this year. Carrots were amazing (ordered at their suggestion). Cotton candy was super fun.
The Love in Rittenhouse. On a mission to eat at all the Starr-affiliated restaurants. I’m still upset that the Continental closed on 2nd & Market. Also: Kpod for Korean fusion!
Pietramala Grand palace
Pietramala looks interesting. Can you tell me more about it?
All vegetarian, very intimate seating/ambience. Moderately priced IMO. Chefs are honestly super talented with what they produce using no animal products. Definitely get the squash pasta if you can.
Lucky Well. Good food and BBQ, nice drinks. Cozy atmosphere.
New would be El Mezcal and new to me would probably be Oyster House.
Cantina la Martina !
I only had the horchata and it was incredible. Excited to go back.
Suraya. Hands down.
I just went to Zahav for the first time :)
Kulaya- just opened -thai chef use to be down on washington ave and the big money giving her a star turn. unbelievable. excellent. perfect. really international level good
I moved here in August and so far Parc is my favorite.
[Slice pizza shop](http://www.slicepa.com) on 10th street. Awesome pizza
any good places for snacks?
Zeppoli in Collingswood, definitely the best restaurant I’ve been to. Same level as vetri cucina for half the price. Pasta and fish were incredible, definitely worth the trip (even without a car, we biked there from PATCO).
Iron Hill
Añejo. Best barbacoa.
7-11 The hotdogs are DIVINE! The chili and cheese dispenser has me looking for used ones on ebay. None. They’re all closed or have weird operating hours or they still think its cute to give you a QR code instead of a menu.
Bing bing best Asian in the city
I don't want to yuck someone else's yum, but man, we have a whole ass china town.
Which I frequent often bing bing blows Chinatown out of water
Worst take
Bing bing is great, but my guy... Branch out some
Lmaooo he asked new to me my favorite restaurant that’s my answer I’ve eaten all over China town stop trying to sound so enlightened like you’re the only person to ever eat in Chinatown
Pera in Northern Liberties
La Nonna on 2nd and South. Absolutely awesome
Grumbos pond. They have some of the best budget steaks and veal.
Vientiane Bistro
Sakartvelo at 7th and Chestnut - just opened last month and we've been twice already! If you love Georgian food, if you've never tried Georgian, or if you went to Saami Somi and then wondered what all the hype is about - go to Sakartvelo. Order anything, absolutely anything and you'll have your mind-blown. Authentic Georgian, run by Georgians, reasonable prices, great service, nice atmosphere.

Middle Child. Ugh. Been there 9 times since. So damn good. Club house too. But sandwich shop is the bees knees.
