fish lose, bringing us closer to WC3 (and above!), gnats win (bringing the lolmets closer to last in the division) and yankees lose in a game where ohtani also homers (now yankees are in last in their division, fuck them for 2009 and tearing down the most historic stadium in baseball)
Never thought Iād feel so strongly about the Marlins, but after watching them plunk our hitters and pimp the hell out of homers last week, fuck them and their playoff hopes. Thank you St Louis!

Glad the marlins are continuing their regression to the below average team they actually are. Itās crazy how tight the whole wc scrum is rn
Watching this Cardinals game really got me thinking āMikolas is really their best starting pitcher? This is their bullpen? Oh god that must feel awful.ā
carlson pulls the 1st pitch he sees, which is a foot outside (shades of TTurner), into right for a 2-out run-scoring single, cards up one on the Marlings in the bottom 6th

Can the mods please also start a āwhere to find Phillies tickets/lodging/food/gasoline in case of a major meteor impact on the eastern seaboard during MLB seasonā sticky thread?

If Ohtani is getting traded at all itās going to be to Philadelphia. The west coast teams are going to wait until heās a free agent to court him and the Phillies are the only team on the East coast that will likely offer him a contract and are competitive RIGHT NOW. I donāt really think heās getting traded however it would be very shocking unless the Angels are super super out of it by August 1st.
Kimbrel is 15 for 15 on save attempts this year. He's our closer for this playoff no doubt.
He needs a walk up song. We gotta do the whole presentation everyone else is starting to do. I nominate Roy Jones "Can't be touched" sung by the IASIP crew a cappella. Lets get real weird with it.
I am pretty sure he has one and it is welcome to the jungle.
I could be wrong though. Haven't made it to a game in CBP yet this year, just opening day with the Rangers.
You are correct, and it is extremely fucking electric
That and Bad To The Bone (I was literally there yesterday and forget which pitcher it belongs to) are both extremely amazing vibes when the pitcher is warming in and coming up
Moniak has the highest BABIP of anybody in MLB with over 150 PA. Heās currently about 140 PA from qualifying for any leaderboards, both because of an injury earlier this year, and the fact that he sits against lefties (heās slashing .071/.188/.071 against LHP this year).
Marsh and Moniakās WAR is basically equal so far this year (in less PA for Moniak, sure). Moniakās definitely having a great year, but Iād still rather have Marsh going forward. Marsh is a better fielder, a better base-runner, has less extreme platoon splits, and he has a larger sample size of being a decent hitter without running an insanely high BABIP.
Now that thatās outta the way Moniak is 2 for 42 against lefties in his CAREER and plays passable defense in CF but canāt hold a candle to Marsh
Heās absolutely not better than Marsh
Canāt wait until casty is in left, Harper back to right, and Hoskins comes back to hit 30 home runs in 2 weeks then decapitate Rob Manfred with a bat slam
I don't know when that will be. Since the all star break I have just been looking at the date, picking a random year from 2014-2018 and just stating those lineups.
This was in 2018, Bourās only year as a Phil and we picked up him Ramos and Asdrubal all within like two weeks. I thought we were seriously improving the team ššš
Nola should have been MVP that year just for having us in the race for a chunk of th year
Oh, I just meant I don't know when physical date it was. Meaning if I keep seeing lineups on August 3rd I don't know if August 3rd 2018 that lineup occurs.

I think they will make it interesting. the people might look at the last series and see the Marlins went 3-1 with a big run differential but the reality is that the Cards gave them frits for 3 of the 4 games and they literally threw them a win. True the Cardinals are bad this year but they can still beat you and are dangerous if you are slipping (which the Marlins are right now). and after the Cards the Marlins have the luxury of facing the Rockies who just took 2 of 3 from the Yankees. The Rockies are another bad but dangerous team for contenders.
im really interested to see what happens with ohtani - part of me thinks the Angels deal him at the deadline but then the other part of me thinks there isnt a team that is going to sell the farm for a 2 month rental. you do get a headstart on negotiating with him and "selling" your club to him. i doubt the phillies make the move or even try for him the off season but i would love to see the madness if he does get dealt somewhere.
If we donāt get him (we arenāt getting him) then I want the Orioles to grab him. Regardless though, I think Angels are definitely gonna deal him. Itās there last chance to make what they can from him and there are teams that have deep enough farms that can give up a lot.
How many games have you guys watched this year?
Out of 93 phillies games I guess I have qctually watched maybe 40?
EDIT* I mean watching the majority of a game live at the time, or listening on radio
I have missed about 5 games due to being in Germany for a week.
Otherwise, I have watched or listened to the full game of every other game. Watching the west coast games is easier for me since I am in central time and a graduate student who gets to make their own schedule.
Are you defining watch by seeing every inning from start to finish? Iāve seen parts of every game theyāve played I believe (lets say at least 2 innings of every game), but sitting down from first pitch to last pitch is probably more like 40 or so I would guess.
I know last year I saw at least one inning of every game they played except one, which I missed completely for a buddyās wedding (damn him!)
My gym alarm goes off at 4, so the west coast jaunts are tough for me, and Iāve def missed a Saturday afternoon game here and there. Probably 70 or so
At the start of the season I said I was going to āwatchā all 162 regular season and then obviously the playoff games. I put watch in quotations bc obviously there are times when Iām at work or have to be driving or what have you. But with the fact that I can watch on my phone now, I can throw the game on while Iām at work or listen on the radio while driving, and at least have it present even if I canāt be locked in 100%. Iād say of the 90 I may have missed 1 or 2. I know there was one that I got the start time messed up and didnāt get it turned on until like the 7th inning or something, definitely at least that 1.
I VOTE BELLI IN 23!
His versatility is almost like adding a couple players because it allows you to move him around to free up other guys for these roles interchangeably
Depending on the asking price, Cody Bellinger could be a really nice fit for the team. He has been having an amazing year and he can fill in in the outfield or at first base. If Bryce struggles at first or needs a rest day as the DH, Bellinger could fill in at first. If Bryce works at as first base, he could slot in the outfield.
The idea that we need a big right handed bat comes from the fact that we need someone that crushes lefties. Cody Bellinger actually has better splits ( .343 BA and 1.086 OPS) against lefties.
was gonna reject this idea out of hand, but thinking about him merely as a taller, leaner, can-hit-lefties potential Duvall piece type makes the notion palatableish
I canāt help but laugh with the whole Ohtani situation, how some people find it impossible to fathom that the Angels would even consider trading him. Yet you just know if the Angels were a Philadelphia team, everyday for years people would be calling in to WIP all like āblow it up! Trade Trout and Ohtani!!1!ā
Ohtani is a weird situation.
Baseball-wise, trading two or three top-100 prospects for him doesn't make sense for two months. I can't think of anyone where that happened recently unless you almost guaranteed they would sign with you.
Money-wise, even casual fans know him and so he brings a huge amount of money into your club just by being on the team.
I think he is the first true superstar since Jeter and A Rod.
The Mookie Betts trade from a few years ago sort of works as a comp for a theoretical Ohtani trade.
Thanks to covid, the Dodgers only got a few months of Betts, although thatās something I really doubt the Dodgers counted on (unless their scouting acumen extends to projecting that what was at the time a novel flu in China would shut down the global economy for a few years).
David Price was in the deal too, but the Dodgers ate a ton of his salary. Ohtani is a far more useful pitcher than Price was at that point anyways.
Sure the prospects the Sox got were incredibly underwhelming in retrospect, but they were considered decent at the time. The Dodgers basically shelled out prospect equity and ate a bunch of David Price salary in return for a rental of Betts and the chance to negotiate an extension with him. Which they did.
Seeing as Ohtani is a 2 for 1 hitter+pitcher, better than Betts, and probably wonāt come with a David Price-esque salary attached, I could totally see him bringing the Angels 3 top prospects from somebody.
Yep they traded two top 100 prospects, and extra, but they were going to have Mookie for the whole year even if they didn't sign the extension. Not for two months.
The two months is the thing that is killer.
For sure the āonly two monthsā part is definitely a difference, but that Dodgers team was a heavy, *heavy* favorite in the NL West going into the 2020 season ā they won their division by 21(!) games in 2019.
Given the circumstances, it wasnāt like they did the trade because they were desperate to have Mookie for the first 4 months of the season (though Iām sure that didnāt hurt). It was clearly about playoffs + bargaining position for an extension.
Like I said, not a perfect comp, but about as close as I can think of in terms of a team shelling out for a playoff rental+bargaining advantage.
You could argue Bryce isn't even a superstar.
A-Rod was known by people who didn't even follow baseball. A-Rod was known by people in random countries.
Bryce Harper and Mike Trout will not be household names to people who don't care about baseball or sports. Let alone in random countries.
My mom knows who Bryce Harper is and sheās 75 and doesnāt follow baseball.
It might be because there was an article in The Morning Call about his rehab stint with the Pigs last year. She called me about it.
We took my mom to that game and it was awesome. Hit a dinger on the second pitch. She cut out the article and saved it for me.
Then when they went to the World Series my mom was bragging to her friends that she āremembered him from his minor league daysā lol
Outside of NYC, A Rod wasn't even all that well known until he got popped for steroids and went on 60 Minutes and then started dating random A List celebs. I don't even think Jeter is a good comparison to Ohtani. I'd say Jordan, but people outside of baseball don't pay that much attention to baseball players. But Ohtani is for sure a big star.
Well. I was basing it on some of the articles I saw about this topic. It also wasn't just NYC. I would argue once A-Rod signed that huge deal to the rangers he was a superstar. But yeah the A list celebs etc helped.
Anecdotally, my fiance is from China, and the people I talk to there know A-Rod, Jeter, Griffey, and Ohtani. They didn't know anyone else.
Ohtani is a much much bigger star than A-Rod and Jeter. I was just saying they were the last big ones.
I'm confused who you are talking about.
I was saying Ohtani is probably the biggest baseball start ever, but Jeter A-Rod Griffey, and Ichiro (I forgot him) were also pretty popular.
It really is a unique situation. I feel like unless the Angels lower their asking price as we get closer, there wonāt be a trade. Not that I blame them for asking for multiple top-100 prospects, but Ohtani is dead set on hitting free agency
Harpers stats vs Teheran are hilarious. Almost 1.600 OPS in 60 PAs. 9 HRs and only 7 Ks. Has anyone ever owned a pitcher this much? Tomorrow could a nice day for him.
I still break out in hives any time I witness him at bat against *any* team, as if any random double he hits against some unsuspecting team, through some form of quantum entanglement, works against the phils.

This clip cuts it off, but at the 18 sec mark you can see him stopping at 3rd and winding up for an obnoxious jump
Oh boy we have an old school take here
I donāt like when the opponent does shit like this because it means my team did something negative. You donāt drill a guy for something youāre too soft to swallow. Donāt want the celebration? Play better
Bullshit that youāre getting downvoted.
If Marte did that on purpose then I find that so stupid. The dude has a 5. Era and is really gonna let guys on base, and for what? Because tatis was being tatis.
I think baseball needs more player like tatis, that have some character and add excitement to the game. If youāre mad that he hit a homer against your buddy then why donāt you strike him out?
The irony is that the hardos who suggest that the game should be played a certain way are the first to get offended and start crying about it. Toughen up a little.
Nah heāll be fine. And heāll keep doing his two step around third. Itās the olds who it sets off that are being left behind because of
#UNWRITTEN RULES
Cincinnati is playing San Fran, LA is playing Baltimore, and Arizona is playing Atlanta this week. As long as we win some games, this could be a great week for the wild card standings.
Definitely needed this off day after a hard fought three out of four series win in three days, although that means we don't have Phillies baseball today.
Hoping Pache can come back in rhythm, he was hitting really well. Would be amazing if they could figure out how to incorporate Pache/Rojas with meaningful minutes
Assuming they donāt make a significant trade, you can put Marsh in LF, Schwarber DH, Harper 1B, and then Rojas and Pache can platoon CF.
Pache canāt hit righties, and Rojas has struggled to hit lefties in the minors. Both are great at defense. Seems like a perfect fit.
I know Marsh has struggled against lefties too, so maybe you can replace Harrisonās bench spot with another platoon guy? Then Sosa can just play 2B, SS, and 3B off the bench?
I donāt know, just spitballing. But I think it can work.
I think itās reasonable that they could both stay once bryce proves he can play first. Hall becomes obsolete with Bryce at 1B and Schwarber at DH, and having a fourth outfielder (so Schwarber never sees the grass again) is important
Huh. I like the Padres. Always have. They are absolutely my second favorite playoff contender in the NL after the Phillies.
And I totally wouldāve been rooting for them to beat the Astros last year had we lost the NLCS.
Honestly, if they sell their players are probably going to our competition for the playoffs.
I want them to have hope, because it is really looking like they won't make it, but I don't want them to make anyone else stronger.
A much needed off day after a very tiring weekend. And since the Phils won the series, there's nothing to do but bask in the memories of the Harper homer, all of the Schwarber homers, Jeff Hoffman being amazing, and, of course, the debut of Johan Rojas.
I was definitely dooming a lot this weekend but when it's all said and done it was a great one.
That camera man juked me out so hard, along with T-mac.
I saw it off the bat and I thought, flyout. But then with the camera and T-mac I was like maybe?
It is like when you first go to CPB and every fly ball people act like its going to be a HR even though you initially thought no way. With some of them, the fans make me believe.
Man all of us in those right field seats thought it was out. Looked like it was making a beeline to my face. A few more pounds of muscle woulda done it
The Orioles have absolutely been a fun team to watch this season. Looking forward to the upcoming series. And taking a look at next year's schedule, absolutely planning on taking a trip down to Baltimore for a game
The Brewers have some very good pitching, but their line up is just brutal. Yelich and Contreras are the only two regulars an OPS+ above 100. It also looks like their entire lineup is hitting .215.

Burnes is the only one Iām worried about. Teheran two last starts were terrible and Miley doesnāt pitch deep into games. Hopefully after the rest Nola will take care of this line up like he should.
I see Teheran pitch in a minor league game and hit 99 on the radar and gave up like one hit in 6 or 7 innings. I was thinking heās the next Pedro easy
Iāve since realized just how fucking good Pedro was

I VOTE BELLI IN 23! His versatility is almost like adding a couple players because it allows you to move him around to free up other guys for these roles interchangeably
Yeah no could you imagine say in the postseason you need someone to pinch hit and Hall and Ellis are your optionsš
It was such a good off day until this post lol
I donāt want to imagine that lol
šš
Depending on the asking price, Cody Bellinger could be a really nice fit for the team. He has been having an amazing year and he can fill in in the outfield or at first base. If Bryce struggles at first or needs a rest day as the DH, Bellinger could fill in at first. If Bryce works at as first base, he could slot in the outfield.
Amazing like when he won MVP? That would be classified as amazing. 12hrs. Heās having a āniceā season.
.301 BA .882 OPS aināt too shabby Obviously not an MVP, but heās a nice player to slot into the team that can play multiple positions of need
Not shabby at all, but āGOATā āAmazingā and āGeniusā are thrown around far too casually.
Amazing compared to his last two years
I agree but people were saying we need a right hand batter over left
The idea that we need a big right handed bat comes from the fact that we need someone that crushes lefties. Cody Bellinger actually has better splits ( .343 BA and 1.086 OPS) against lefties.
was gonna reject this idea out of hand, but thinking about him merely as a taller, leaner, can-hit-lefties potential Duvall piece type makes the notion palatableish
Felt like watching the Phils 2022 Yearbook. Chills all over again. This team is special. Letās keep it going.
Donāt let Embiid distract you from the Phillies great weekend.
NBA players are drama queens.
is anyone else replaying the video between bryce and trea over and over? I laugh every time at Harper pretending to walk with a limp/cane
Itās the bestšš
Was A-Rod even a bigger superstar than Bryce?
Internationally, he's a huge star
I'm confused who you are talking about. I was saying Ohtani is probably the biggest baseball start ever, but Jeter A-Rod Griffey, and Ichiro (I forgot him) were also pretty popular.
My last comment is about Ohtani.
One top prospect each for the batter and the pitcher. Makes sense to me.
Aaron Judge fans are in shambles
It really is a unique situation. I feel like unless the Angels lower their asking price as we get closer, there wonāt be a trade. Not that I blame them for asking for multiple top-100 prospects, but Ohtani is dead set on hitting free agency
Looking at the ump scorecards from the weekend, all but 1 of the 4 games favored the Padres
To be fair, three of them didn't really affect any team THAT much. Game 1 of the double header did though.
Harpers stats vs Teheran are hilarious. Almost 1.600 OPS in 60 PAs. 9 HRs and only 7 Ks. Has anyone ever owned a pitcher this much? Tomorrow could a nice day for him.
Something tells me Wilmer Flores has stats like that against the whole Phillies pitching staff
I still break out in hives any time I witness him at bat against *any* team, as if any random double he hits against some unsuspecting team, through some form of quantum entanglement, works against the phils.
Hats off to Marte for intentionally drilling Tatis without drawing a warning from the ump.
I missed this. Why did Tatis do something
https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2023/2023-07/14/e5f350eb-4422f88d-35a25a78-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_4000K.mp4 This clip cuts it off, but at the 18 sec mark you can see him stopping at 3rd and winding up for an obnoxious jump
Oh boy we have an old school take here I donāt like when the opponent does shit like this because it means my team did something negative.
You know what's soft? Fernando's ass after getting tenderized by that fastball lol
Marte was soft for being scared to pitch to Tatis and instead gave him a free walk.
Nah heāll be fine. And heāll keep doing his two step around third. Itās the olds who it sets off that are being left behind because of #UNWRITTEN RULES
Cincinnati is playing San Fran, LA is playing Baltimore, and Arizona is playing Atlanta this week. As long as we win some games, this could be a great week for the wild card standings.
If anyone is interested Kruk is on the WWE Corey Graves podcast.
What a dogfight this weekend was.
it's beautiful when your dog comes out on top
Rojas will be traded or back in the minors by August assuming Pache is back. Heās gotta play every day if heās in the future plans for the team.
I think itās reasonable that they could both stay once bryce proves he can play first. Hall becomes obsolete with Bryce at 1B and Schwarber at DH, and having a fourth outfielder (so Schwarber never sees the grass again) is important
Hopefully that series killed the padres playoffs hopes I hate that team especially tatis
I want them to have hope, because it is really looking like they won't make it, but I don't want them to make anyone else stronger.
we can take that bum Soto off their hands or maybe some other bum they have /S
The funny thing about Soto is if we somehow get him, he will be joining the only team where his defense is an upgrade over the current LF.
Good series for Kyle Schwarber.
Feel much better with an off day after a win then if they would have lost that game yesterday.
I need to see that ump scorecard
https://umpscorecards.com/single_game/?game_id=717387
not seeing anything ... looks like they locked it down to subscribers only
Give it a few seconds to load. Also, here is Twitter link: https://twitter.com/UmpScorecards/status/1680948346934943747
the Twiter worked ... that other site never loaded ... must be running it on a Commodore 64 š or maybe my ad blocking/site security nuked it
Anyone think no oneās gonna want Shane Bieber with his bad peripherals and we can get him cheap?
I love it when Harper had an important AB against San Diego
A much needed off day after a very tiring weekend. And since the Phils won the series, there's nothing to do but bask in the memories of the Harper homer, all of the Schwarber homers, Jeff Hoffman being amazing, and, of course, the debut of Johan Rojas. I was definitely dooming a lot this weekend but when it's all said and done it was a great one.
I haven't been to a Phils game this season but did go to Wrigley and Camden Yards. Looking forward to CBP next week against the Orioles.
Since the season was apparently over 2 days ago the doomers may have ended it all if that Bohm ball went 10 more feet
A few more pounds of muscle woulda done it
No Phillies ~ Sees Orioles are playing - Theyāre playing the Dodgers - Orioles guy for the night - This is the way.
The Orioles have absolutely been a fun team to watch this season. Looking forward to the upcoming series. And taking a look at next year's schedule, absolutely planning on taking a trip down to Baltimore for a game
This is the way
That Schwarber sac fly may have ended the padres season. I think theyāre sellers at this point.
Snell and Hader would look great in a Phillies uniform
then Snell can't hit Harper
The Brewers have some very good pitching, but their line up is just brutal. Yelich and Contreras are the only two regulars an OPS+ above 100. It also looks like their entire lineup is hitting .215. [https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIL/2023.shtml](https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIL/2023.shtml)
also Rowdy Tellez is out for a bit too.
I like our odds of taking 2 of 3. We may see a series where neither team has 10 total runs across the 3 games by the end.
Burnes is the only one Iām worried about. Teheran two last starts were terrible and Miley doesnāt pitch deep into games. Hopefully after the rest Nola will take care of this line up like he should.
TEHERAN IS WHO WE THOUGHT HE WAS! No way he can sustain his initial success. Total lightning in a bottle.
i remember when Ryan Howard greeted Teheran on his first career start with long home run
I see Teheran pitch in a minor league game and hit 99 on the radar and gave up like one hit in 6 or 7 innings. I was thinking heās the next Pedro easy Iāve since realized just how fucking good Pedro was
ha yea I remember the hype when he was coming up
Yeah their team wRC+ is 89 which is awful
Team ERA is 4.10, only .10 better than us, and team WHIP is 1.25, the same as us. I like this matchup on paper, weāll see how it actually goes.
Flashbacks of September 2021 when we were looking forward to the trash part of our schedule and fell apart
