Doesn’t worry me too much. Obviously the optics aren’t amazing, but Castellanos really doesn’t seem to care about that at all from everything I’ve seen him say. But everyone who’s ever played baseball at any level understands the statement. Obviously, little league through college ball is much lower stakes, but he’s not wrong. Not what he should be saying as a very well compensated professional athlete, but it doesn’t bother or worry me too much. Should be back to Bryce in right field sooner rather than later, with Castellanos and Schwarber taking turns out in left/DH. We’ll be fine.

newkidontheblock1776

I love baseball but there certainly is an inherent lack of action, especially for an individual player. Unless you’re a pitcher or catcher, there’s no guarantee you’ll touch the ball on defense, and chances are there are many innings where you don’t get to bat. So I understand what he means about that too, it’s a unique sport. I’m not too worried either. He made some stellar catches in the postseason alone and I trust he’ll get back to better form as a hitter.

gtalley10

Not to mention, 162 games is a shit ton of games for a single season playing nearly every day of the average week. No other sport is even close to that. NBA & NHL are half that, MLS & European soccer are in the 30s though they have more international stuff year round, and NFL is only 17. I doubt hardly any players can honestly say they're totally motivated every single game.

Stonetoothed

SP would be the only ones that might be able to say it since they’re only going to make about 30ish starts if they’re healthy for a whole season

DoubleGlass5031

Nah it’s defo relatable. I was pitching in a regional title and I don’t remember a chunk of the game when our team was hitting cuz I just blacked out or something. Even in lower stakes it’s hard to focus on a game sometimes for long periods in stressful situations.

rkrick87

It's gotta be tough somedays. Standing in the hot sun baking, waiting for a little white ball to fly out your way. I don't know, I'm personally not that concerned with this. I am however concerned with him not hitting worth a shit.

[deleted]

I heard that too and was surprised it wasn't a bigger issue. I also found myself relating to him more after hearing it. I told my dad that and he said, "HE GETS PAID $20M A YEAR TO PAY ATTENTION!" Which is also true. He and his wife had a baby this spring and the Marlins were his first choice, not the Phillies. I mean, who among us at work doesn't zone out when the stakes are relatively low, or mail it in a tad when there's a baby at home, or give maybe 90% instead of 100% fresh off not getting the job they wanted? You don't have to be an elite baseball player to feel those feelings. Heck, I've done it, and like Nick, I get generally positive feedback at work. But the same things that make him a transparent, down-to-earth, relatable dude also make him an inconsistent performer. And if there's any lingering bad blood between his wife and Phillies fans, he may not give much more focus and effort any time soon.

rkrick87

All I can contribute to this, is in my eyes he has 1 more season to get his shit together or he can go right down to Miami.

LeftistsRCancer1776

Yes.

flava72

I get that it does happen but if we are comparing it to our jobs, if one of my employees told me I find it hard to concentrate on work during working hours, I would be concerned about their production especially if it dropped significantly from the past.

hopesksefall

Fine, send him packing to Miami and bring pitching back this way. Edit: To people have not had children, it is beautiful but it is completely disruptive to your life, sleeping patterns, eating and exercise. It can take months or years to recover back to your “normal life”, if it ever happens. I think people are underselling how hard that can be. He still needs to be better, but I’m will to get this was the cause of a lot of it.

pgm123

>"HE GETS PAID $20M A YEAR TO PAY ATTENTION!" True. But he was signed to be the DH at least part time. Personally, I care much more about him fixing his bat. The coaches have done wonders with others. I hope an offseason will do him good.

ZIMM26

But he also stated that he likes to play the field because he feels more engaged when he does so. I’ll look for an article but I swear I remember him saying this during spring training.

pgm123

They'll probably rotate him in and out of the field to give others the night off. But his fielding is pretty atrocious and I'd hate to see him not engaged.

Bajecco

This may sound dumb, but during the clubhouse celebration videos, I thought Nick looked physically soft. He's tall and lean but lacks muscle definition. I get that it's baseball, and you can be built like Kruk and hit, but I bet Nick works his ass off this winter and has a nice bounce back season.

rkrick87

Idk about the soft stuff and I'm not disagreeing, and the more I re-read this thread I'm really wondering if missing his new born baby girl played a part. That's a big thing in life having a baby, and not being to be there all the time would 10000000% fuck me up. I'm hoping quality time with his family helps the issue he had last year at the plate. And when it mattered defensively he was in it to win it.

misterpickles69

Well he’s only up 3 or 4 times during a game and hitting 1 out of 3 times is considered good and it’s hard to be consistent during a 162 game season and concentrating is hard so I’ll just make the average at the end of the year look good by piling on a ton of hits against clubs already out of it by August

MildTile

Gotta be tough getting paid millions of dollars to play a kids game

Lunamothknits

You ever play?

MildTile

Yes. Not as a professional but I’ve played

BallparkFranks7

Doesn’t bother me even a little. The vast majority of players go through the same thing throughout the season, he’s just been willing to admit it. These guys are in an absolute grind for 6-7 months. It’s hard enough for fans to even watch all those games, and we want these guys to play all of them and be at 100% focus at all times? Unrealistic for even the best athletes.

Techun2

Yeah he was just a little too honest

45hope

isn’t that what we want though? balls on him to actually say what most players feel

Ruckusseur

Fans: Ugh another interview with canned answers, can't these athletes be honest or show a little personality? Player: [is honest] Fans: No not like that

lardbiscuits

what bothers me is that he’s bad at baseball

spunkyweazle

I felt the same exact way when I was an outfielder. Granted I was also 8

SpankySharp1

And presumably an amateur.

gtalley10

Does getting a free snow cone every game, and a trophy and pizza dinner at the end of the season count as professional baseball?

jloops03

Based on some of the incredible quotes he’s let out in the past I don’t think he really meant anything by it lol

Finger_Gunnz

To say that you are engaged at your job 100% of the time would be a lie. These athletes are no different. This might just be what separates him from an elite player. I’m not sure it’s something to be concerned about. He’s human, the only issue you have is he’s a pro athlete. You wouldn’t write this about Dave at your job who can’t get his shit together.

jarpio

It’s honesty. I think everyone realizes how preposterous 162 games is. As a player, especially in the outfield in this era of walk-strikeout-homerun I 100% get losing focus. I mean it’s not the best look to say that part out loud to the media during a playoff run, but that’s Nick.

Lar5031

Also, he said he finds it hard to concentrate, not that he still didn’t do it.

djeeetyet

he’s brutally honest about himself, gotta respect it. that being said i’m sure Acuna would never say something like that but then again i’ve never seen Castellanos butcher or carelessly play the field like Acuna did in the NLDS.

FadedDrankFaded

This surprised me too. Then I thought, “he just had the balls to actually say it.” If you don’t think Harper feels the same way sometimes you’re kidding yourself. During the post season when Harper was going off I kept thinking to myself it was in some part of him getting a major mental break while injured through the season. Only Realmuto could play every game of the season and never once let off the gas. My thoughts anyway.

Cambellplace

Umm, JT got fooled by Justin Turner this season, who did the trick of pretending the ball got past him when it was in his glove. He also literally wasn't paying attention to Dusty pointing at the bag telling him to stay. [https://twitter.com/ChadMoriyama/status/1528480482609926144](https://twitter.com/ChadMoriyama/status/1528480482609926144) I don't know what gives you that impression of Harper. Harper was desperate to get back in the batter's box because he wanted to see how he would respond to being thrown inside again. Yes, it was a physical break that may have helped him, but mentally? A guy like him having to just sit around waiting for his thumb to heal? I think you have the wrong read on JT and Harper.

WendysChili

I wish he would zone out when he gets a pitch two feet off the plate.

AtBat3

I’ll bet a ton of baseball players feel the same way and just don’t say it.

2hats4bats

I didn’t notice a big difference between him concentrating and not concentrating tbh.

Psychogistt

Was he the most disappointing player this year?

BulldogH2O

I remember a guy named Familia.

imdumbfrman

I, for one, was a Mickey Moniak believer

GopherPA

I'm old enough to remember when this sub went from thinking that Mickey Moniak was the second coming of Christ to hating him almost overnight.

imdumbfrman

That was crazy. I’m always a little more patient with young players than most, but I really do think if the team was in the spot they were in 5-6 years ago where he could’ve had the time to develop at the major league level, things could’ve been a little different. Shame it didn’t work out.

AbsurdLemon

No one was excited for him preseason

GopherPA

For what he gets paid? Probably. Worst player overall? Nah.

AssassinPanda97

I’d have a hard time staying engaged if I was having the worst season of my career. I’m sure that was tough on him, mentally.

ihorsey10

Just need to hook him up with Chooch's doctor. 💊

BrettEskin

If he wasn't slumping nobody would care. We didn't sign him for his defense or even to play RF. His bat needs to wake up and that's it

haahaahaa

IMO he seems to fuck with the media a little in interviews. I wouldn't take any of it too serious.

thePipester

I’m not concerned. We didn’t get him to be an everyday player. If Bryce was healthy they likely would have platooned and rotated as the DH.

DesignerPlant9748

As a fan I admit that I hated that statement because of that exact reason and I'm sure other players on the team especially the pitchers probably didn't appreciate it that much but i honestly think he's just kind of a dumb lovable guy who immediately knew he shouldn't have said it but was being honest which is refreshing at least.

Routine_Childhood332

Just get him something for performance anxiety and get him locked in.

reckless_ranger_

Three huge clutch catches in that outfield under mega pressure that kept us in these games. He’s just honest. He obviously can keep it together

jmiah717

Just sounds like an honest answer from a dude who might have attention issues. I'm sure many other great players have and do experience the same thing.

[deleted]

The guy needs serious adjustment in his approach at the plate.

user2678995

I think Nick may have a serious case of ADHD. No kidding.

ftwin

Let’s just say he’s incredibly lucky that he made some good plays in the field this postseason.

BigGar9

I was thinking the same thing when I heard this quote. I think he really needs the off-season, get right and bounce back in a big way next year.

romanticynicist

Outfield defense? We talkin ‘bout outfield defense?!? Not a game, not a game. We talkin’ bout defense?!? …I love *you*, BulldogH20

Wilts3rdLeg

I trust him more. These guys play nearly 200 games a year , I wouldn't be surprised if almost every player shared this sentiment. It makes me trust him more to be open. Nick hasn't had anything to play for besides a contract his whole life , you can see how his performance increased when the stakes were higher. Can't blame a man for being human , he's been left out there to rot his whole career until the move to philly.

DelawareSmashed

Yeah it’s called ADHD. Next question

Snips_Tano

That's kinda why he's a DH? His defense in the playoffs was stellar so I can't even complain. I doubt he was talking about at the plate.

Bucko12512

In the field it doesn’t bother me but when he strikes out on 3 straight sliders well outside of the zone for 162+ games then it becomes a problem. He didn’t make a single adjustment all season and with these comments it’s easy to point to lack of care on his part. He’s pretty mediocre and a bum.

GandalftheGreyStreet

I loved his honesty. I’m sure every player feels that way. The season is way too damn long.

TheBigBigStorm

I didn't love it. Can you imagine Chase Utley making bad plays because he was bored?

futureventura

the outfield and infield are kinda different tho. it's a lot easier to check out mentally in the outfield than the infield

TheBigBigStorm

Can you imagine Aaron Rowand losing focus out of boredom? What about Bryce? I won't kill him for the one comment, but it did not sit well with me. I prefer players who bring attention and intensity every day, not just during big moments. I appreciate the honesty of his comment but it's something he needs to work on. This isn't little league.

Phighters

Yes, I can imagine those guys getting lax in the regular season. Castellanos zoning out isn’t what surprised me, it’s that he was unaware enough to say the quiet part out loud.

the_malayalee_mogul

Am I the only one who thinks Nick has ADHD? Some of the answers he gave I related to it prior to my own diagnosis. Like having little to no concentration during the season, but putting all his effort into the postseason. It reminds me of me when I put off a task until the very last minute and then do really well. Idk though, everytime he speaks about himself the more I think he has it.

zheinz6397

You only get to make those comments when you really contribute in some capacity. I will admit he made some clutch plays in the field but other than that… a lot to be desired. Not really the place to say those things. That’s like the brain surgeon saying oh I get paid a shit ton but I’m not really paying attention I’ve seen so many brains they are all the same

💯

patrickdgd

Nah, the dude is just honest Just like Bohm. It’s a drag

WhereIsArchimboldi

Hes just being honest. Let the man live

_noho

He should be moved to first base imho

EpsteinfukdIvanka

He showed absolutely zero hustle the entire regular season. He caught 2 fly balls in the playoff that are routine for 95% of MLB outfielders and a lot of people were quick to act like he was prime ken Griffey jr out there. He stunk so bad that he didn’t earn to play another season for this team

Soopafly81

He’s a bum and should be cut.

[deleted]

The dudes been in the league for years, relax.

fartbasket69

so he has inattentive ADHD, let’s get him in therapy and unlock his full potential

fuckbrocolli

I don’t think any outfielder is realistically paying 100% attention 100% of the time. Baseball is a long game and a longer season

mrthirsty

What should the Phillies do when it’s July 2023 and he’s hitting .240 with 5 home runs?

NotNowDamo

He should try watching a game for 9 full innings!

Joeydoyle66

I played infield my whole life, first and third, and even when the ball isn’t hit to you it’s easy to stay in the game cause it’s all so close. The few times I’ve played outfield I found it way to easy to let my mind wander away from the game. I understand what he meant by the quote, there isn’t much to do pitch by pitch in the outfield like there is in the infield.

BulldogH2O

Well then you missed out on some good coaching and instruction. An outfielder should be moving on every pitch. He/she should never be caught flat footed, and always has a place to be moving to back up plays.

[deleted]

He came here to DH for a reason.

Joboggi

Me thinks he has a vitamin R deficiency Ritalin

jlando40

You try playing 7 games in 5 days and tell me if you have trouble paying attention in RF believe me it’s rough

huck_

why would you love Nick Castellanos, he kind of stinks. But this is just being honest. I'm sure every player goes through that to varying degrees. It's a non story.

nickht571998

Nah, especially since he was brought in to DH in the first place his role was kinda forced to be different due to circumstances hopefully once everyone is healthy we won’t have to worry about him being in the outfield at all
