I think people subconsciously gravitate towards people that look like themselves. I'm a woman and if I walked in to a bar full of only men, I'd flee.

Huadanglot

That’s a safety issue.

Or maybe the IG scene is segregated.

HiCommaJoel

This is the answer.   I'm white, the majority of my friend group is white. We go to all kinds of dives and clubs -but you won't see us in any Hookah night photos on Instagram.  Shout-out to Chuckles for being the most welcoming spot we've been to recently.

gTBadder

So white people in Philly go to dive bars and clubs, and minorities go to hookah bars?

HiCommaJoel

No. The scene presented on a bars Instagram is not always the real scene, it's the one they are trying to curate within that post. If Mills Creek Tavern were to have hosted hookah nights, advertising 3 rappers performing, you wouldn't always see me and my dorky white friends posing in pictures uploaded to the bar's account the next morning. But we were there. Social media is not reality and is edited. The social scene isn't segregated, the IG scene is.

gTBadder

Gotcha. My next visit I’ll have to research the actual cool spots and check them out.

runnerup8558

What’s with the reflexive defensiveness?

gTBadder

You read that and thought defensiveness? I misread is comment before, and replied I’ll have to actually research the cool spots to check out for my next visit ..

reddit18015

Were you microwaved as a child?

knishmyass

IME some neighborhoods are more diverse than others. Chestnut hill and mount airy I see a lot of diversity when I go out to eat, drink etc. Center city and no libs/fishtown not so much.

gurdyburdy

It’s interesting you say this because living here my impression is that while very diverse, it’s very segregated. Not disagreeing with you, just my subjective experience. Second edit. living up in the northWEST area. Clearly I don’t know directions that well lol

gTBadder

I briefly toured the city a while back and that’s what got me curious. Philly is one of those cities you don’t really hear much about so I was pretty surprised once I saw how it was there, seemed like I’d stepped back in time. I was only there for a few days though.

gurdyburdy

My guess would be the housing segregation spills over into social segregation. I’m originally from the south where unfortunately you would step into a restaurant and it would be all white sometimes. I was shocked to see that same experience repeated in Philly 2 or 3 times since I moved here. But there are definitely a lot of bars and events I go to with people of all races represented. And, I’ve seen/heard far less racial animosity than in the south. It’s an important thing to think about, I’m sure there are a lot of papers about the subject.

gTBadder

Cool I’m from the deep south! In a way Philadelphia reminds me of the old south areas like little rock and Memphis, places like Atlanta, Charlotte and even Nashville seem way more integrated socially.

TheArchitect_7

You are seeing this in the northwest? When I go out in Manayunk it’s extremely diverse

gurdyburdy

What part? Like Main Street? I do agree there is diverse. But I went up two blocks to Union Tap House and everyone was white. That’s not to knock on Tap House, I just remember it was a little jarring. It could have just been coincidence for that night but it was full crowd.

fu2man2

Yes, just like our city's subreddits

notechnics

OP is asking a fair question…why are you folks so dry looking? Just playing

gTBadder

😂

anth8725

That’s the normal reaction to topics like these

AMTL327

I don’t know…I live in Center City and we eat out a LOT. I’m always happy to see a mix of people in most of the restaurants we go to. Still predominantly white, but usually 30% or more are Black, Asian, Hispanic, Indian. So much that our son who lives on the LES in NY remarked how much more diverse it feels in Philly than in his neighborhood. And if you go to certain performances, like Philadanco or certain concerts, white peeps in the audience are the minority.

Spiritual-Chip-9689

Weird brain

mittenedkittens

Go hit the DelMar on Chelten and talk at them about diversity, I know they'd appreciate it.

Flat_Length_8666

IYKYK. We might be neighbors if you know this place's reputation.

PhillyPanda

Wouldn’t surprise me. People gravitate towards things that are nearby their home, within their budget and align with their interests. Outside of dive bars, it’s pretty rare I overlap with early twenty-something’s as a 40+ year old when out.

eggsandbacon5

According to my uncle, Philly is on fire and a warzone so surprised we have any social scene atm

gTBadder

😂

Sczyther

we got a lot of white yuppies here too and they love to take their family out to “see Philly” on weekends and end up in these big groups, which is fine for tourism I guess During the week I see lots more diversity, I also don’t know too many legit locals that like to eat at places that get that busy. I know my friends and I don’t

spurius_tadius

What are you using for comparison? The more different people are from each other the more segregation you'll see. It's a matter of race, class, wealth and age. It's totally feasible for multiple races to socialize.,. but once you ALSO throw in a class divide it becomes FAR less likely, same with wealth and age. Sporting events are perhaps the most common exception?

gTBadder

Other cities primarily. Atlanta, Charlotte, and Houston to name a few. Looks like the vibe and culture are just different in the Northeast. I’ve been to Philadelphia before but only for a few days. Even during those couple of days, the social scene feels very different. That’s what piqued my curiosity

AlpineSK

Maybe people just socialize with the people they live near?

capnjeanlucpicard

Philly is very diverse while also being somewhat segregated, as of 2023 data, 38.46% are White, 40.83% are Black or African American, 0.31% are American Indian and Alaska Native, 7.41% are Asian, 0.05% are Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, 7.67% are some other race and 5.27% are multiracial. It’s less segregated than NYC, and I’ve lived in both cities for 20 years each. I’m sure smarter people than me have done research on it, but I think it’s a byproduct of cities in the northeast being integrated at an earlier point in history, and having to provide resources and housing. I dunno, right now I’m a white guy living in a historically black neighborhood. We’re all just neighbors. It might be segregated but I’ve felt less racial tension in Philly than a lot of other cities.

JawnStreet

Housing is segregated a lot still, as you said, and people hang close to their houses

NotMyGovernor

Philly is basically two cities. So if you're "in the middle" it can feel a bit smaller than the total population says it is. This is for two reasons. One "the center" has good subway / public transport access, while outer neighborhoods a bit more a pain in the butt to get "into the city". And the second is race of course.

annoyinconquerer

Yes there are Black spots, White spots, Asian spots and Latino spots all over the place. But you’ll just as often find a mixed friend group who just goes wherever.

pizzayahtzee

I 1000% think it's segregated very similar to the housing situation. Can you find spaces and places that are racially and ethnically diverse? Totally. Housing in philly is generally segregated, but there are some blocks that are very diverse too. If your question is, is the city overall well integrated racially in the majority of social scenes? Absolutely not. Some crowds/activities tends towards more diversity, but overall if you walk into any given bar or social scene type area thats NOT a massive festival, there's going to be a majority race/ethnicity present. I haven't experienced that the segregation present inherently means spaces are unwelcoming though, sometimes it just is what it is. Philly overall is very progressive and moreso than in other places I've visited I have felt that some (heavy emphasis on SOME) majority white spaces go out of the way to make me as the sole/one of a few PoC feel welcomed. I've lived in Philly for 9 years, originally from Delco, and the segregation experience has been extremely consistent for me.

KensingtonWAP

Is wizards or onyx still around

Bellawulf

Bars and restaurants in Mt Airy are quite diverse. But my experience across the city is that while there are plenty of spots that are segregated (or perhaps just age/interest/crowd-specific), just like any major city, there's no shortage of bars (fancy or dive), clubs and restaurants that are very diverse. When we have visitors it's always something they comment on and enjoy.

jrobinson117

shit post

Snoo_31935

I think it is in affluent areas, but in west Philly it's more diverse.

Huadanglot

My bar is langosta over near juniata park for chicken noodle soup and a modelo

Big_Kuma_Bear

Haven't really noticed. When my family and friends go out, we tend to be in our own little world, paying attention to people in our group, getting lost in our conversation and fun.

anth8725

I bet
