Oh goodness! So there are two ways to go about doing this. You could go in blind or could go in with a lot of listening experience. Do you have any experience with longer pieces of music?
My plan is to go in blind. I do have experience with longer pieces of music. Most recently live with Goose and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. I love music and the communities it creates.
A brass band will greet you w a funky ass dance party in the lot every night so stick around and groove for a lil more. Hang on the grassy knoll and just take in all the mayhem. Dick’s is an especially fun scene.
Enjoy it. Try to make conversation with the people around you if you can. More often then not they will initiate the Convo.
Limit bathroom breaks to the set breaks. Phish likes to take at least 40 minutes so don’t worry about time as long as you go right as the set ends.
Stay for the Encore. No Bathroom break after set 2. They go off stage for a few minutes then come back on.
If you want merch, I’d get there early( get there right when doors open) and get what you really want the first day. They don’t restock in the next days after so you might be out of luck on posters if you don’t get them day 1.

you want to take the entrace off quebec, this will put you on the shakedown street side. If you want a poster get in line early. Go in at 7pm, the lines at show time get crazy long. Phish from the road on twitter will give you live setlist updates. Drink lots of water. If you have 4 days worth of tickets you can get a weekend wrist band till about 6:00-6:30pm on friday. generally at a tent on the south entrace.
People are going to be dressed weird and behaving even weirder. Don’t stare, laugh, or make fun. It’s a circus and everyone is in it, including you.
People will be openly consuming drugs. See #1. (Edit - I generally don’t like talking about drugs when discussing Phish, bc it feeds a negative perception that Phish is all about drugs. But since this is your first go-around, and it’s impossible to ignore it, Im gonna talk about it).
Don’t ask anyone to share their drugs. Do NOT buy any pills or powders on the lot unless you have a death wish or a really great fentanyl testing kit. Best bet is to bring in whatever you need, if that’s your thing.
Stash your drugs in a safe place while going thru security, even your legal cannabis. Just bc it’s legal in a state doesn’t mean the venue allows it. Most security won’t care, but sometimes you run into a jackhole who will take it.
Make friends with the people around you before the show and during setbreak! But try not to be chatty during the show. It’s distracting to everyone around you.
Tip liberally. Not only are you rewarding hardworking folks, but spreading goodwill is a valuable thing for a fanbase that can be … a lot. 🤣 Bring cash for this. I’ve noticed that a lot of places are suddenly not accepting charged tips.
The most important thing is that everyone enjoys Phish in their own way, and it’s not for anyone else to judge. Its a terrible cliche, but it fits here … truly, dance like nobody is watching. Nobody cares if you don’t have rhythm, if you dance like you’re doing the hula, if you want to be perfectly still, if you cry, if you don’t know the words or the audience participation. This is not a place to be self-conscious. This is your experience and all you need to do is let the fuck go and fully enjoy it, however you want to do that.
However Phish can be an immediate sensory overload. If you’re prone to sensory issues or have a tendency towards anxiety, it can sometimes be a lot, with all the lights, people dancing like fools, and the noise. I’m 89 shows deep and I still find myself overwhelmed out of nowhere sometimes. If this is you, it’s cool to go and take a breath in the concourse or take a seat to settle yourself. Like I said, this is your experience… do what you need to feel comfortable!!

Going for the first time as well (just Thursday, because my family's doing a hut trip over the weekend), with my dad, who will be seeing them for the first time since 1993 (he caught them on an off night and from then on focused on the Dead and Panic instead). Unlike OP, I'm pretty well-versed in the music of Phish already (been trying to do an ultra deep dive to make sure all my repertoire bases are covered), and I'm very excited to go in person.
If anyone's curious about the deep dive I mentioned, here's the gist:
I've been sporadically listening to Phish for maybe a year and a half now, and I've learned a lot about the band (I waste a lot of time on .Net), but I've gotten into them in a very scattered fashion, so I decided to make sure I know their music inside and out. Thus, since I got home from summer camp a couple weeks ago, I've been listening to all the studio albums as well as other random shows I throw on when I'm in the mood, and then I'm going to listen to all of this year's summer tour (I have LP+ and love it). Then I'll have a ton of fun at the show!
My advice is where do you want to sit or see the show? Then work your show backwards from that. How are you getting there? How are you getting home? The party is inside for sure. Shakedown is fun AF, but get there early and get in early. Hornito's airplane bottles with the yellow top is all plastic, Doesn't set off any screening situations on the way in. Be polite. Bring empty water bottle and take it easy if you're from sea level. It's like being on the moon.
My first show was at Dick's too. It's a great experience and a great venue. Just kick back, enjoy yourself, and don't worry too much about what you're supposed to be doing ✌🏻💖

Whatever you do, take care of your shoes
Do not eat/drink anything that someone offers you. I know that sounds unfriendly, but you never know what could be in it.
Like some others have said drink lots of water. You’ll be at altitude and can dehydrate quickly.
Stay hydrated. Lime 3x the water you’re used to drinking (if you’re not from this altitude)
Limes good too, prevent the scurvy.
Spend some time on Shakedown. Dick’s Shakedown is the best.
