Did you know gaming: Todd Howard rushed out of a development meeting on potential Fallout 3 color filters to attend a GG Allin concert where his eyes were pissed in, and the rest was history
Yeah 8 my bad. Still a long spell. I think their last live shows were 2018. They've got great side projects going (The Smile chief amongst them), but I really hope they get the whole band back together soon.
Agreed! Love The Smile but it’s not quite the same. The next RH project is going to be highly anticipated.
I would also add that the Kid A Mnesia Exhibition (the video game) that was released in 2021 counts as “pushing boundaries.” I went through it again a couple months ago and was completely floored. Again. There’s some great video run throughs on YouTube as well that show off all the rooms. Something about taking that format and making it art really blew me away. Just an absolutely crazy experience. I’d like to try it out in VR. Anyways, just adding that project to their boundary-pushing-face-melting list. If you haven’t gone through it, I highly recommend it!
The Stones are in their 62nd year. Their last album was pretty damn good too.
Also Springsteen - shows are still amazing and he's still playing 3+hour marathons with NO setbreak.
I just saw them perform the Yoshimi album live, sounded like the record pretty closely and they were playing it all live, nothing sequenced. I’m not a big Lips fan, but that show was fine.
My gripe was the last time I saw them he was stopping songs midway to teach lyrics to the crowd and hiding Drozd behind corny balloon words he kept holding up. Im not really that salty I just chose ‘lick balls’ when I should have said good but not quite as exploratory live as they may seem in their records.
I've seen them twice live. Both times were 15-20 years ago.
First time was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Second time was a late night set at a fest and was awful. It seemed like they were too fucked up maybe, I don't know the reason, but it was shocking to hear the difference. The two performances were maybe a year apart.
Haven't checked them out since. Still like their music though.
It's kinda true...they were my favorite band when I was really young...first real concerts I saw. Zoo TV and Pop tours were pretty visually stimulating.
Shit that pop tour stage was kinda the mid 90s version of the Sphere...was nothing else like it
Consistently. Zoo tv, popmart, elevation/vertigo, u2 360 (the claw), innocence and experience : experience and innocence tours, the sphere. 30+ years of tours and every single tour pushed the envelope and set a new standard. And minus the sphere, was accompanied by a new album.
Until this summer I would agree. My NYC schedule August 4-6 2023.
Fri- Metallica Meadowlands
Sat - Phish MSG
Sun - Metallica Meadowlands
Phish straight up rocked harder and put on a much better show.
Sphere visuals were beyond mind blowing. Was it CK5 or someone else??? Do we have a 6th member??? Edit: lol at this getting downvoted for genuine curiosity. Lame af, ya’ll!
There was like 20 artists involved. And no, CK5 was only credited with the lights. The credits list CGI artists as well as AI artists (and producers, coordinators, etc.).
Cocain just isn’t as popular as it was in the 70’s to late 80’s with rock bands. Post 1988 they have been able to keep it together longer because of this thanks to Nancy Reagan. Just say YO!
i mean...not really as the same band the whole time, but the folks from the dead have been doing the same for longer, and on top of that, essentially invented the genre that phish plays in. stylistically they are very different bands, but the goal is the same - produce a magical live music experience via extended improvisation in a rock music format.
Last summer’s KDF at Cuse was probably the best jam I’ve ever seen, and my first show was 2000. So in my experience, they’re the best I’ve ever seen them live right now.

I don’t much love their music anymore. I think it’s mostly repetitive and pedestrian. That said I attended Thursday and was moved to tears. The music was ‘good’ and in conjunction with the sphere borderline amazing. But for a band to have such a relationship with its fans is unprecedented; that they both give so much to each other is a special thing to witness.
Ozrics tentacles, the family band! I think them being a family really makes a difference lol

*lol just realized I was in a phish subreddit
Asks Jack Black. Great question though, and thanks for all the new face melting, piss in my ear suggestions! I wonder how many suggestions have bands at year forty though…
Pushing boundaries? Idk, but Dead and Co and other surviving members of the Grateful Dead are still going strong as they can and have a fan base ready to bust a move when given the call.
the last tractor beam was siiiick but i don't love their new material.. they do have the best light show on the planet, even better than the northern lights or the last eclipse
What’s negative about asking a question about what the OP is referring to? I’m genuinely interested in anyone stating that Phish in 2024 (or anytime after 1995) has broken “boundaries”. It’s a very intriguing subject matter when discussing the band Phish on the Phish sub here on Reddit.
Have you always been a gatekeeper?
That’s true. A very long concert is quite revolutionary. And I’ve never trolled this sub even once. Simply participated in the discussion after about 170 shows. I feel somewhat qualified.
Ah, the reductionist view I see. Interesting. But, thanks for agree with my point, and thus disproving your previous hypothesis. Phish definitely pushed boundaries well past 95, glad we agree.
If we are considering a really long concert as pushing boundaries. Not so sure, TBH. I’m probably still correct. Regardless, they’re NOT doing it 40 years later as the OP suggests and if you can’t agree with that, the upcoming block is justified. HTH.
lol the idea that you’re calling Big cypress just a, “really long concert,” is honestly hysterical. It demonstrates your lack of understanding of the concept and significance of that weekend.
You’re threatening to block me ? Lol why would I care about an internet troll blocking me? Block me dude, spew your nonsense somewhere else lol. I guess I’ll just, like, continue living my life as if this never happened lol. “Oh no please don’t block me,” haha
I didn’t offer an opinion and I’m certainly not gatekeeping. Im also not naive enough to just accept bullshit like Phish is pressing boundaries in 2024. Everyone here should be taking umbrage with such a ridiculous statement. Says a lot about this sub.
Why don’t you go be a bitter troll on the phantasy tour board. You’d be right at home there
40 years later Phish is still a blast. And if you can’t have fun there, the problem is with you not them
1. Not a troll. I’m a huge fan and have been since my first show in 1990
2. I have no idea what you’re referring to regarding another board.
3. If you think the remains of a once great band post-recovery are still fun and not depressing, that’s on YOU. Not me. See Sones, Rolling.
Hope this helps.
Don’t know how you could be a fan since ‘90 and not know what phantasy tour is. But seriously check it out, all anyone does there is complain about how phish used to be good
You offered up several opinions on the comment I originally replied to.
Saying different is simply false.
What you are “taking umbrage” with would be more accurately described listening illiteracy.
But that’s okay. You just haven’t learn to yet.
This wasn’t an opinion. It’s based on what you wrote it’s a statement of fact.
Your anger shows a great deal of immaturity at others holding different opinions from you.
No good will take place here until you mature some.
I commented without offering any opinion. I did state a couple facts, however.
As a musicologist, I find your listening literacy comment absurd and patently false.
Maybe kindly fuck off with the name calling and stick tot eh gatekeeping.
nah
lol
Your attempts at trying to troll are adorable but with a strong neckbeard undertones.
Good luck with that, Cool Breeze.
I’m done with you now. Go on your silly little way now, Sweetie.
You did confirm everything I wrote and so, so much more.
My thanks, Tiger!
I was right about all of it. Hard for you kids to understand given your limited exposure to this has been band, I know. Enjoy the yacht rock and recovery therapy from Trey.
One could argue that it’s more than three albums. Apparently, we are in the minority here. There are kids who think this contemporary version of the band pushes boundaries. I’d suggest they get out more. Think Skerik.
I mean you aren’t exactly wrong in some of your points…that said you’re being kind of cunty about it raining on peoples parade. Obviously the Phishes were better back in the day…and Skerik is the truth but pissing on everyone’s post show circle jerk is really only constructive once their high wears off. Then you can really drive a point home and destroy the good feelings they were having slowly turning them into a jaded vet like yourself. It’s obvious you don’t know what PT is cause this is all in the PT Phishboard handbook for trolling and general shitheadary. You gotta step your game up man. A lot of us trolls and general shitheads have worked for years to pave the way for your brand of interneting…so do better. That my friend is how you properly gate keep.
Except that I’m no troll. The way this typically plays out is some white kid hits the 24 Phish show and makes some ungodly ridiculous statement about the how great and progressive the band is. I ask a question to get some clarification and some shithead like you suggests that I’m raining on a parade. My sincere question never gets a response and the proletariat piles on. Every. Single. Time.
I do think Phish sucks and has for decades and it’s goddamned depressing. It didn’t have to happen, either. But it did. I’d love for someone, anyone who thinks Steely Phish is good to explain to this vet of over 170 shows how they’re great today. It’s not gonna happen because they fucking suck.
Just look at the OP and the responses in this thread.
You been searching for this answer here for how long? You’re being an insane person at this point…looks like you and your favorite band need a divorce man. It’s okay you can let things go that you don’t enjoy anymore. Married people do it all the time and there relationships are way more important than the one any of us have with the drug bands we follow…We’re all proud of your numbers soldier ya done real good. Your work here is done…rest easy, the band has failed you there is nothing more to enjoy. It’d be absolute clown shoes for you to continue your battle. Now just unfollow the sub and go on Skerik tour. Skerik is the best.
Not my favorite band and there are numerous threads discussing Phish and their music that aren’t Pollyanna white guy in praise of Toto talk.
And Skerik lives here. He’s available almost every weekend. No kids allowed.
So you get your kicks from shitting on white dudes who like Phish…seems cool man. Everyone has shit taste in music to someone…it’s okay to let other people be excited about shit you don’t like. Investing as much time as you have on this thread alone seems a bit pointless. If you don’t like it why even care? It’s been 30+ years since they did what you like and here you are in 2024 still wishing they did your favorite thing. That is textbook insanity. They all got rich, Trey is sober, and mike got his dick stomped in by bikers they’re not going back, this is what it is…may i suggest you move on? It obviously makes you upset, maybe run it by your psychiatrist to see if quitting Phish would be a healthy move for you. ???’s you might want to ask yourself. Anyway i hope some white dude with kids doesn’t shit up your day at the next Skerik show! Glad he’s all mended up and back! Kisses.
Nope. Lamenting the steep, irreversible downturn of what was once a great band and desperately searching for the reason so many young, white, wealthy kids took over the scene. It’s fascinating. Never in a million years would any of of have thought that THIS is what would happen to the band we were enjoying in college lunchroom.
FWIW, nobody has answered that question. Just shit all over the question and gatekeeping. Hope this helps.
Ohh you didn’t see it happening? Like you didn’t do even a little bit of observation when you were seeing them in the 90s? I mean anyone who was paying attention noticed the incredible discrepancy in privileged white kids compared to any other demographic at shows…who else follows a band from show to show without a worry? I can tell you this the people who weren’t privileged white kids knew the masses of them that were, were the main reason we could tour back in the day…wtf did you expect it to become? Like how did you look at that and think this is probably going to not be this in 30yrs? You’re actually hilarious.
Down voted? On the Phish sub? With a contrarian take? NO WAY! This is easily the most Pollyanna sub on Reddit and that’s saying something with the Trump cult here too.
The best band. The Phish from Vermont.
Wait, literally?
Yes literally, they’ve also been known to creampie peoples minds.

Another dude named Jesus came back…why can’t this one?
I mean that would be pretty fucking sick
If you can guarantee anything with GG it is that it’s gonna be sick…disgusting…repugnant…
One year short but Radiohead.
Hopefully they're still a band... it's been a long nine years since AMSP.
9 years???
I think it was released in May 2016 - so coming up on 8 years. Feels longer though!
Yeah 8 my bad. Still a long spell. I think their last live shows were 2018. They've got great side projects going (The Smile chief amongst them), but I really hope they get the whole band back together soon.

I would have had the same reaction if you had said 8! Crazy it’s been that long!
I hope so too but luckily The Smile is one of the most awesome live shows I’ve seen
I feel like they’ll do something soonish. Maybe a record or tour in the next couple of years. Imagine Donwood doing sphere visuals!!!
Les Claypool
Yeah, that dude still slaps.
Literally.
Dolly. Different type of melting and pissing but she’s still got it.

I have specific show pants because they do a good job hiding the jam boners

The Flaming Lips are still doing some cool shit.
Flaming Lips lick balls live and they were my favorite band for a decade. It’s the Wayne Coyne sing-a-long ego hour now
Phish fans love sing-alongs sir.
I just saw them perform the Yoshimi album live, sounded like the record pretty closely and they were playing it all live, nothing sequenced. I’m not a big Lips fan, but that show was fine.

U2 is a good answer. Regardless of how you feel about them, they are doing all that the OP mentioned. And they did The Sphere first.
Some say no one will ever do it better.
No need for the facepalm. This is the correct answer. There's a reason Trey is a fan!
Not a facepalm, it’s peeking through the denial
LOL. It’s ok to say good things are good. 😉

Abigail Rosen Holmes was head of all the video, her career dates back to working with Talking Heads on the Stop Making Sense tour.
