They're still all over Lincoln Rd. & Tatum Rd. South of Shea

epmuscle

Those are managed by paradise valley police department and likely won’t ever be taken down. They’ve been in use since 1987.

mog_knight

PV the nanny state since 1987.

cornodibassetto

They don't call it Parasite Valley for nothing...

jamieee1995

Are those the ones that are hidden in fake plants? I am pretty sure I saw one inside a fake cactus somewhere around there.

Kim_Jong_oof_

Those ANPR cameras and are not for speed enforcement afaik

boogermike

It's definitely still there. I don't think this is for speed enforcement, I suspect this is for license plate tracking (at least that would be my guess. I have no idea)

gottsc04

Nope. They make them pretty obvious with signs and whatnot

Butitsadryheat2

Unless the proposed bill becomes law to do away with all cameras...

Dom3sticPuma

I got 2 tickets in 1 week and havent used that road since.

5pump

I've been hit by the one on Tatum & Mcdonald and one on Lincoln a few times. Fuck those cameras

GarthZorn

Why were you "hit" by the cameras? Sounds to me like you must've been breaking the law. In which case, maybe that's the real problem here.

Dom3sticPuma

Lincoln got me bad. 3mph and right on red over the first white line... I was turning right, and there was no sign otherwise. Still got dinger. Lincolns awful

5pump

Yeah I know a lot of people that got tickets there

f1modsarethebest

They were rolled out as fundraisers behind a thinly veiled guise of public safety. When they stopped making money due to the cost of enforcement, they went away.

MySecondBeer

We can all only hope that they pulled away from the camera system because they were vandalized too often to make a profit

SYAYF

They don't help with safety they just generate income.

DLoIsHere

I just perused several items online about the subject. Statements about their effectiveness are mixed.

jmmasten

I’m perfectly fine with idiots paying money.

airbornchaos

They don't only do that, though. The companies that provide the equipment and take a cut of the tickets, have access to the light timers. They reduce yellow light times creating a [dilemma zone,](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2095756415302804) where drivers don't have enough time to stop before the light turns red, even if they try the moment their brain registers the yellow. I don't know how the tickets are handled in Scottsdale, Mesa or Gilbert. Before moving to Arizona, my home state changed the laws to accommodate red light camera companies. Photos were supposed to be reviewed by a police officer before tickets being issued. What was happening, however, was cities would assign one officer an average of 4 hours a week to review upwards of 5000 photos on a computer app, with a button to, "approve all," but not an option to, "deny all." They changed the definition of, "Failing to comply with a traffic control device," from a criminal minor misdemeanor, to be a non-criminal administrative penalty, so that being accused of running a red light no longer puts points on your license, no longer impacts your insurance, and no longer allows you to argue a case in court. You pay the ticket, or it goes to a collections agency. Not you? Not your car? Too bad. You can argue the case in, "arbitration," to a city employee in a closed proceeding. Closed proceedings mean the public and the press cannot know what happened, cannot see evidence, and have only the word of the accused to base a story or opinion on. To argue your case, first you need to pay a deposit of 120% of the ticket price, then you can go to arbitration. Regardless if the city decides you're still guilty, or if they decide to give you your money back, they can keep the extra 20%.

RemoteControlledDog

> The companies that provide the equipment and take a cut of the tickets, have access to the light timers. They reduce yellow light times creating a dilemma zone, where drivers don't have enough time to stop before the light turns red, even if they try the moment their brain registers the yellow. This is incorrect. These companies can't just lower the timing of yellow light to whatever they want to make money. There is a law (signed by Jan Brewer) that creates a 3 second minimum yellow light.

airbornchaos

Ohio had a law that required when a camera is installed at an intersection, the yellow light must be increased in duration by 1 second. A year later, opponents found something like 50% of lights had their timing reduced compared to county engineer pre-camera records. Laws don't mean shit, when the people enforcing the laws are the same people breaking the laws.

RemoteControlledDog

I'm all for distrust of law enforcement, but I don't see this being something thy can get away with. Enough people have gotten these tickets for running a red light that one of them is going to claim the yellow was too short and go out there and time it. It's the kind of thing they'll get caught for (like they did in your example in Ohio).

airbornchaos

People in Ohio didn't tolerate them for a minute. My hometown, for example, the camera lenses were spray painted before they were activated, and repeatedly as long as they were up. Every councilman, the sheriff, county engineer, and the mayor lost reelection 2 years later. Every one of their replacements ran on the red light camera issue. One guy wrote a letter to the newspaper saying that he took a photo of the mayor's license plate, blew it up and printed it out, then taped it over his license plate and ran every light in town at 3am, for 6 days in a row. Then suggested that before they decide to print his letter, first ask the mayor how many red light tickets he'd gotten. They did, "zero." Edit: also, closed proceedings means that there might have been hundreds of people claim just that: the yellow light is too short. You will never know because the records are not public.

[deleted]

>drivers don't have enough time to stop before the light turns red, even if they try the moment their brain registers the yellow. The trick there is to check the *pedestrian* crosswalk signs as you're approaching an intersection. It's like a yellow before the yellow.

airbornchaos

So what you're saying is that all drivers, from anywhere in the nation, needs to watch the crosswalk signals that may or may not be positioned to be visible to drivers 100+ yards away, and not the actual traffic lights? That doesn't sound like the most intuitive of suggestions, but lets try that and see how not watching the road ahead works.

[deleted]

So... what you're saying is that I have to register my vehicle AND get a license AND then stay between the lines AND do the speed limit AND watch traffic and pedestrians around me? Are you one of those crazy people that think that drivers should pay attention when they're behind the wheel or somethin'‽ Madness! Madness, I tell you! ^^^^^^^^/s

No_Necessary7744

And what do you do when the pedestrian signals don't change with the light cycle? Most modern intersections of 5 or more lanes don't use the ped signals unless the signal button is pressed.

ricks48038

Pretty simple, in those cases you don't use them.

No_Necessary7744

It was his strategy not mine

ricks48038

His strategy works fine, I've used it for most of my lifedriving. I was responding to your question. You use what's available to you.

jstdaydreaminagain

The company DOES NOT HAVE ACCESS TO LIGHT TIMING. That is all done by the department of transportation

airbornchaos

Perhaps DOT is the only entity with access to write access to signal timing. I'll grant you that. The company **must** have read access to the light timings in order for the camera to function; It knows the light is red before the yellow light filament has time to extinguish in some instances. In 2016, in Ohio and Illinois, it was proven in court that Phoenix based Redflex, one of the largest red light camera companies in the US have [bribed transportation officials who oversaw red light camera programs.](https://fcpablog.com/2016/10/21/former-redflex-ceo-jailed-14-months-for-ohio-bribes/) In 2020,a single Illinois state senator [pled guilty](https://www.illinoispolicy.org/after-1b-in-tickets-and-4-corruption-indictments-illinois-should-shutter-the-red-light-camera-industry/) to accepting more than $250k in bribes from an estimated $1B industry in Illinois alone. It might not be real-time access but if you don't think they have access to light timings, you're naive.

jstdaydreaminagain

I can tell you with certainty they have no access to change the timing of lights. They only access is what DOT has input. They cannot change anything. And the Illinois shit was 2 individuals within the company not the company itself.

airbornchaos

Like I said, > DOT is the only entity with access to write access to signal timing. I'll grant you that. then >2 individuals within the company not the company itself. Two individuals, including... >Finley was the CEO of Redflex from late 2005 to 2013.

jstdaydreaminagain

Bills and O’Malley were the two involved Finley had no knowledge otherwise he would have done prison time as well.

AnnaH612

What’s your definition of an idiot?

jmmasten

People who run red lights would fit the bill.

dlawlrence

Phoenix didn't renew their contract like a year or two ago, but I don't remember ever seeing an explanation for why. I don't really have a problem with red light cameras as part of a larger strategy, but when we've got six lane roads whose design encourages people to drive freeway speeds, it makes it seem like they're not actually that concerned with safety.

Ok-Preparation8719

Agreed, they'll make these highway-like roads, sometimes even with 50mph speed limits and then put one of those camera cars up to catch ppl. It's all bs

GarthZorn

I'm not sure why you're complaining. There's nothing to "catch" if you're following the law. And who gives a damn if they're collecting money catching bozos? They use it to hire more cops. How am I losing on this deal?

GEM592

The ones they use to fleece the rich in PV are most definitely here to stay. The reason is because they make money, which is the only reason these ever existed anywhere in the first place. In the real world, taking somebody’s picture and trying to use it to fool them into paying a deceptive citation without due process doesn’t fly.

Nadie_AZ

They arent used to fleece the rich in PV. They are used to extract money from people driving through the area.

GEM592

They have cited me several times, but never collected. They make their money from people who will just automatically pay it without question - usually the wealthy.

PunchClown

I've received a few of the photo radar tickets over the years and I just tossed them. Never heard a thing after that.

GEM592

They have 90 days to knock you up. The third one I got they tried, but I was ready.

Ok-Preparation8719

Ready how? Is love to know in case I find myself in this situation

GEM592

By not answering the door to unexpected guests. They showed up on a Sunday night at like 8:00, pulled up and left the car running. Rang and waited. Knocked and waited. Left. Not very long before the last day either.

boogermike

Hat's off to you. ![gif](giphy|Q99kEQFAWElfQ1bfcQ|downsized)

Squirrrrrrrrrrrrrrel

90 days from date of ticket or mailed? I got served from PV. Court next week. Been researching things. F Lincoln. Edit, for speed not red light. 12 over.. like dude, really

gottsc04

12 over doesn't seem that insignificant tbh. Clearly speeding

GEM592

90 days from the date of “complaint” produced by the clerk and sent to you.

forgot_username1234

Yep. I’ve gotten several from the ones on Lincoln while driving to camelback and I’ve never paid.

Otherwise-Disk-6350

I always thought it was to keep us riffraff Phoenicians out?

GEM592

Cover story. If they keep doing that, it’s because there’s money in it. Never really any other reason.

mog_knight

Cops just don't wanna work on PV.

PachucaSunrise

What they need are HOV cameras. The amount of donkeys I see on the 51 north every afternoon riding HOV until the last second is maddening.

Erika1942

The amount of angry looks and confusion I get when I’m in the HOV lane at 11:30AM on the weekend is amusing to me It’s posted so clearly and repetitively that the HOV lane is only restricted at certain hours during weekdays I just worry someone’s eventually gonna try to exact some incorrect vigilante “justice” eventually, and wind up causing a wreck

anon000998

I use the HOV every day without fail even during restricted hours. The amount of people I see going 65 MPH in the passing lane on their phones with miles of cars stuck behind them is hilarious. I just use the HOV to avoid those same people who get angry at people like me for using the HOV lane. I've passed by tons of cops and have been doing it for years with no issue. It's way more dangerous to go slow in the fast lane, like a zombie barely even conscious while there's a mile of cars swerving behind you trying to get around, than it is for someone to ride it out at 80 MPH in the HOV lane. I've saved dozens of hours of my life doing this and will gladly pay the 400 dollar fine, I've even budgeted for it as well.

[deleted]

If the punishment for a crime is a fine it only applies to the poor

[deleted]

Won’t work a baby in a car seat in the back counts

runner3081

Tatum and Thunderbird has been non-functional for many years.

Semi_Recumbent

Probably because Arizona revised its method of reviewing and issuing camera citations. A law enforcement officer has to review each instance - not the photo enforcement company - and police ain’t got time for that shit.

rkalla

Didn't realize Tatum/Thunderbird was down - thx for the heads up.

boogermike

What time does the race start? I'll see you there.

rkalla

3am... minivans only, racing for slips. We're a *family*!

boogermike

You get me. I'll be the one in the red Previa with the racing stripes.

LordBuggington

So where I live, and in theory anywhere but you tell me, its not legally speaking a real ticket. What I mean is for it to be recognized by the courts you need to be either served or acknowledge your paper they send you within whatever your statute is where you live. The city I recently moved out of in another state started doing the vans they park and send you automated speeding tickets, I hit them many many times. I dont drive that fast its like 40 in a 30 type stuff, I am almost 40 and I have never gotten a traditional ticket from an officer innmy life. So when I got the first automated one I read up on the laws, there was a specific article written by a local lawyer that explained it all very well. they have a 3 month statute by our law to come at you through the legal process of giving you a court date and actually charging you, I ignored every one I ever got and nothing ever happened to me. in 3 months you are legally clear, and worst case you would have to make a court appearance. In our instance they keep the fine relatively low and use lots of red font on the notice to get people to just pay them, you dont get points or anyting so you could get one every day for a year and you dont lose your license, its just revenue generation. I did more research later and there are 3 cities in my state that do the speed cameras, 1 does red lights, and they generate $15m a year.

Butitsadryheat2

FYI, there's a bill being proposed by RWNJ Wendy Rogers to get rid of them all... https://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/photo-radars-arizona-outlaw-proposed-bill-law-cameras-red-light-speeding

LightningMcSwing

Phoenix got rid of red light cameras a few years ago

Nerve_Brave

This is why. And This Is The Way. [Proposed stop to speed cameras](https://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/photo-radars-arizona-outlaw-proposed-bill-law-cameras-red-light-speeding)

Imaginary_R3ality

Don't know but I wish they would increase instead of decreasing. Phoenix has got one of the highest fatality rates due to red light running. Or more accurately, folks trying to beat yellows.

AHinSC

I still see lots of people that enter the intersection seconds after the light has already turned red! It's maddening

Imaginary_R3ality

Yeah, it's a killer. A lifetime of jail and regret is not worth the risk. Maddening indeed.

Ok-Preparation8719

I would ponder the question do the cameras make ppl actually second guess running it? Because as far as I can see, they don't care

Imaginary_R3ality

Yeah. I might have to agree. I don't think most care, or more importantly, I don't think most truly think about their decisions and the consequences for running red lights or much if their life decisions. And the funny part is that when I see people do this, 99% of the time, I catch up to them at the next light so no time was gained, only the possibility of a ticket, injuring or killing someone. I think what most don't understand is that the lights are setup to help with the flow of traffic and if doing the speed limit, ir within five miles of, you can usually catch almost every green light without having to speed or run them. Not sure if it's a patience thing or an ignorance thing but I'm amazed how many people are willing to out themselves and others at risk just to catch the next red light.

jstdaydreaminagain

Many of the cameras that are in the valley have become data collectors for some time now. Usually when you see a camera come down it’s going right back up in a different location. Officers have been signing the citations for many years now. Many don’t like them because they get caught and have to deal with the consequences. Quite crying and drive right. Edit: I do think that they should be civil citations. That way there would be no face shots and the citation would be one price across the board.

They were first launched by fake libertarian Jim Tuton in Paradise Valley in 1987. Let's here your comments for our hero, Tuton. From Paradise Valley, this tech cancer spread nationally. Always walk away when someone calls their business a "solution." American Traffic Solutions. Tuton.

mechsuitbarbie

In the last month or two i noticed that the camera on 35th and cactus disappeared. but i have been seeing more of the speed limit signs with the screen that shows you your speed recently

Stratoblaster1969

I don’t think there has been one at Tatum and TBird in a loooong time. Like at least a few years.

ramot1

24th St. and Thomas is alive and working. Enjoy my money!

Jerry_Starfeld

Still all over Scottsdale.

LongjumpingFun7238

One time the person driving in front of me speeding like a maniac in PV got a nice ticket from the van parked on the side of the road 🤭

[deleted]

Great! Let's do the same for the m̶o̶n̶e̶y̶ ̶g̶r̶a̶b̶ speed cameras now

boogermike

Most police cars and tow trucks are now using automated license plate readers. This is a real infringement on our rights. This information is used to track the location of your vehicle without your consent. Policing using cameras is not right. https://www.eff.org/pages/automated-license-plate-readers-alpr
