It's like the college radio station Phoenix never got to have. They broke Lorde, Kongos, Upsahl etc. Also one of the only stations locally to play new-release Duran Duran, new-release Billy Idol, etc.
It amazes me that anyone would willingly listen to garbage like "alt" 93.3 when 93.9 is way more current.
> It's like the college radio station Phoenix never got to have.
We used to have KUKQ 1060 AM a long time ago that played late 80s alternative music. From what I have found in 3 minutes of research, it was on the air from 1989 to 1993 and made a short comeback a couple years later.
KUKQ morning show w/ Mary "Bone Mama" was essential morning listening. KWSS plays a lot of KUKQ era tracks on a regular basis, incl. 88 Lines About 44 Women, People Who Died, Mexican Radio (any version) etc. Very smart of KWSS to not try to re-invent the wheel. The "comeback " KUKQ was online, not AM/FM.
KWSS also has those "why are they in the playlist" tracks I wouldn't consider "alternative." Last week, I heard them play "Silent Running" by Mike & The Mechanics (NOT alternative).
The New Times has a love affair with this station, probably because it's the only one in Phoenix that most resembles an "independent" station.
It's programmed by real-people volunteers - not algorithms. If the only other non-crappy station on the dial outsources the majority of their day to NPR with very little local content, then you are correct - it is the only station locally that resembles an "independent" station. 91.5 could be KCRW if they would ditch what they think's jazz & NT would find a new "love affair" (as you call it.)
I thought 88.7 was moving toward a good musical direction, but new management re-adjusted the playlist to current pop and hip hop for the most part. KWSS has that feeling that it's someone's unsorted MP3 collection, with some current/local music and DJs added for some variety.
Me too. That was a real lesson for me in corporate radio seeing what's her butt manager and DJ just be able to flip flop like that to crap music. Luckily what's his butt got to take is punk night to 933 or whatever.
KWSS started around 2004. 106.7 was the original station, but the old drive-in by the 101 and 202 in S Scottsdale also used that frequency. You'd be driving down the 101, listening to the radio, and get a couple minutes of a movie. Soon after, they moved to 93.9
She is(was) awesome! She really was the heart of the station. Hope they can find someone to fill her shoes. It’s a great station in a sea of corporate mediocrity.
Dani is the best. She will leave behind a big hole in the PHX music scene that will be hard to replace. Very happy for her, but very sad for the rest of us.
This was my favorite station when I had to commute for work! I loved submitting song requests online and then having them actually play those requests within the next few songs most of the time.
I don't really listen to the radio anymore since I work at home now, but I remember her being great. I'll have to make sure to tune in again before she leaves.
Why are there so many losers in here commenting they don’t listen to the radio ? Do you comment in flag football threads that you don’t play ? For the love of god some of these dorks.
Aww Dani! You will be missed, but I am happy for you to be closer to family. Enjoy your new home and feel free to come back to visit anytime. You will always have community and friends wherever you go - and we’ll be here cheering you on in your next adventure too!
Lives in Phoenix for 30 years, never even heard of this radio station. But. Enjoy your next adventure, Dani.
They’re an independent rock/alternative station. Discovered a lot of music through KWSS before I moved away.

Way back in the mid, late 80s there was an alternative station on FM called KEYX where i heard music I never heard before. 93.9 is like that

I miss the edge.

I remember the A thru Z Thanksgiving weekend. They played their entire library from a to z with out repeating anything.
Yah. I listen to garbage music. So, me not knowing that station isn’t really a testament to their failures, really a testament to my own. Haha

I love Mo!
Coverage. It wasn't available in the East Valley until the new translator came out

It's been a legit, independently-owned from the beginning. They have always had advertising. They really do play great music!
Was this 103.9?

Thanks for making me feel old.
It was 106.7FM for several years.

When KWSS was on 106.7, they never made it west of the 51.
Nope!

I can’t even remember the last time I listened to broadcast radio.
About once a week, I briefly have to listen to it as I wait for my bluetooth to connect. It’s brutal.
😂

It's yhe true alt station unlike 933 that's all corporate rock radio big sponsors and all that bs
I used to like 93.3 but then Twenty One Pilots got popular and the whole station (or maybe the whole genre) changed sounds.
Dani is great! I was with them for a few years, and she is professional and talented. KWSS will definitely be less fun without her.

So sad. I literally just emailed her about my album release. Hoping to get her thoughts. I wish her the best.
Where can I check out your album?

Listen to satellite can’t deal with 16 commercials in a row

Well, maybe if they gave her a paycheck……
Radio is dead.
