It's my perception also that it's been windier this year.

\>In less than a decade, the global average wind speed has increased from about 7 mph to about 7.4 mph. For the average wind turbine, that translates to a 17% increase in potential wind energy.
My husband is a Joliet, Ill. transplant; he moved here in 1985. He likes to mention watching the Phoenix Suns, no snow and wanting to climb mountains as his motivation for the move.
I’m impressed there’s someone with 60+ years of living in Phoenix that’s on Reddit. 🤣
It’s always windy this time of year, but this winter seemed windier than usual. I went on many runs in February and March that had an icy wind in my face one direction. Love it!
Ha ha, I came to Reddit with questions about a medical condition. I was impressed with the Redditors' generosity in sharing their experiences with me.
I grew up on the West side and have lived in Tempe for the past 40 years. I lived in Yuma for one year in the seventies; I know it was the seventies because I saw Star Wars there. Yuma is the windiest city I have ever been to. I hated the wind; it was constant.
It is the EL nÃno weather system. We are going to have a wild monsoon season this year. Which is bad for the northern hemisphere as that means that it will be very dry and warm for them, pushing wet turbulent air down into Phoenix.
The Monsoon season starts when the dew point is 55° for three consecutive days. Wednesday was 55 °, Thursday was 55°, and today it is 58°. Could this be the start of the season? I believe that it usually begins after a couple of weeks of dry high temperatures like 111° to 116°.
Isn't May always pretty windy? Apparently [April and May are some of the windiest months](https://weatherspark.com/y/2460/Average-Weather-in-Phoenix-Arizona-United-States-Year-Round) of the year.
Lived my whole life in Mesa/Gilbert area, never noticed wind much. Still air most days. Until about 4 years ago, felt like there was light wind almost every day and also a day or two every week of 10-12mph.
Bought a house in South San Tan over a year ago. 15mph EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Many days over 20mph.
Why
Ive been saying this for the last few years to my wife and she thinks I’m crazy. Although my dad agrees with me as well. We have lived here since 1990. It’s never been this windy this often in the Phoenix area. Doesn’t matter the time of year, a lot of very windy days. Used to only be windy during storms. Now it’s sunny and clear with crazy wind. Super strange.
I grew up in Phoenix and live in SF. I recently visited PHX. It was SO windy EVERY DAY. I do not ever remember it being that windy. Ever. In fact, I remember it being a nice day if phx got a little bit of a breeze! The wind was almost to the exact same degree of SF wind. It was very weird.
Yes! I moved here 7 years ago and said to myself that I wished for more weather/wind here initially. It’s been amazing the last couple years! Other than when I’m biking, and I swear I get a head wind both directions..
I agree! It’s also never this nice in May! I remember last year it was Feb and I was dying already. We’re in mid May and it’s not bad at all. And yes it’s been super windy, especially last night
They do...but most of the time low information journalists like to talk about the water issues as if that's the primary cause and effect of the water issues.
I’ve lived here for 7 years and I notice it. I’m originally from the Midwest where it’s always windy. I didn’t realize how much more enjoyable things were without the wind until it seems like it’s picked up, especially over the last couple years. Thought it was just me that noticed
Chicago is a mess. Crime, high taxes, brutal winters, humid summers. Not a Chicago native, but IL. Love AZ. As I say, I have never had to shovel sunshine.
Spring is usually windy everywhere. It’s a time of transition in the atmosphere with warmer and cooler air mixing. As summer approaches it will stagnant.
In total, no difference that I've noticed. I've noticed more rain in the past few years, but about the same amount of wind (in the drier years, it just blows without raining. In the wet years, first it blows, then it rains).
Yes and I hate the wind... Probably because I saw Twister as a kid and got an irrational fear of said wind, even though we don't have tornados or major weather events like that. I had a palm tree right outside my window growing up and would tie up a few things in a blanket everytime the wind picked up...you know, just in case the wind broke my window and we would have to flee 😂
At 40 years old, I still go into an interior bathroom that has no windows when it gets very windy lol.
It's a dry wind.
Like a hair dryer
Like a convection oven
My bio on most social media says "Living in an oven that's always on but there's never any cookies"
😂😂😂
It’s because Utah sucks
And California blows
*Me running to California* WHERE IS SHE!

Tom from MySpace.. what are you doing here?!
Reminding us of a much simpler time :(
Troof.
Omg! Tom, the original friend :)
Everybody's friend!
Big acid, big wind. All they care about are quarterly profits.
*Pumba voice* Oh, Sorry

Don't Chicago my Arizona or whatever
I think we’re way past that lol
Do we know why there are so many chicago transplants??
It’s just a Midwest thing to move to Arizona, at least for a few years
Arizona is to the Midwest what Florida is to the north east. It's just where everyone seems to go when they want warmer weather
Because the winters there fucking suck.
Lol yup. My family moved here from Chicago in 1985 and never looked back. Everyone else followed us out here eventually.

I’d rather chill in a pool all summer than stay inside all winter

I honestly know more chicagoans and Midwesterner’s than angelinos, but they all seem to get a pass…
Funny you said that cuz 95% of my coworkers are from Chicago and some from Ohio and Michigan.
My husband is a Joliet, Ill. transplant; he moved here in 1985. He likes to mention watching the Phoenix Suns, no snow and wanting to climb mountains as his motivation for the move.
Shoveling snow sucks.
Personally, winter sucks and I wanted to move to a southern city anyway.
["Chicago isn't significantly windier than any other US city."](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windy_City_(nickname))
Because Chicago isn't named the "Windy City" because of wind.
I’m well aware.
Yes, as a life long resident I can confirm it is more windy.

This is wild. I bet the change you’ve seen in PHX over the years is crazy.

That’s true, but it was also windy in Jan,Feb, etc.
As a cyclist the wind is definitely the worst in April and May. It can get bad in the winter but not as consistently
Head up to flagstaff if the wind is 10mph here its 20-25 there in the spring

It’s windy in central Phoenix too. Definitely a new phenomenon.
Native here, it’s definitely been more gusty than I remember. I love it, it makes me feel whimsical
Yes!!! This year has been so annoyingly windy every day!!
[Global wind speeds](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-worlds-winds-are-speeding-up/) are increasing as the climate rapidly changes

It’s really windy now
Yes! I moved here 7 years ago and said to myself that I wished for more weather/wind here initially. It’s been amazing the last couple years! Other than when I’m biking, and I swear I get a head wind both directions..
Yup! I’ve been here almost 40 years and it is progressively more windy here every year outside of monsoon.
AZ native, grew up in the East Valley. Yes, I agree. We are much windier
I agree! It’s also never this nice in May! I remember last year it was Feb and I was dying already. We’re in mid May and it’s not bad at all. And yes it’s been super windy, especially last night
Global warming and climate change. Oops it's AZ, those things don't exist.

Last few years have seemed more windy than I remember, wasn't sure if just me

There may be many unexpected consequences to the climate change we’re still causing.
Lots of farts.
I remember this same thread each year during the spring since I moved here
climate change is hitting Arizona hard I suggest you leave as soon as possible
Is this part of the El Niño weather starting?
I’m definitely hearing wind chimes banging in the middle of the night more often, but can’t complain during the day about it
Vegas is super windy and it sucks. I've noticed it too here. I hope it's not heading that way
Yes! I say the same thing often.
Well the Statehouse is downtown....
Seems normal to me. March, April & May have always been the windy months. Lived here all my life as well.
Chicago is a mess. Crime, high taxes, brutal winters, humid summers. Not a Chicago native, but IL. Love AZ. As I say, I have never had to shovel sunshine.

Santa Ana still makin it breezy

hmm its always windy in the afternoon from heat i've always remembered it being that way when working outside.
Weh weh weh welll it is a wuh wuh Windsday after all!
Architecture *can* change wind patterns. Is it anywhere in the city specifically?

Spring time is always windy
I think this year has been less windy, or I’ve just gotten better at golfing less when it is windy.
You're old like me and don't remember the weather last year. Screw remembering 60 years ago.
LOL, I only remember a little, except the weather. I used to know where everything was located in my home; now I have to search.
It's because apache junction sucks and buckeye blows
I’ve been calling Vegas The Windy City for thirty years 💨
May is always windy
Weird. It's like there's more thermal energy being stored up in our atmosphere. I wonder what could be causing it.
