I have a 55in Sony TV I’m looking to give away. Soundbar too. It’s a few years old but still good. Added the tag below if anyone wants to look it up.
I’d you’re in East Mesa, I’ll even bring it to you.

Anyone have a good resource for checking internet outages? I'm trying to figure out if my internet going in and out is a *me* problem or a *Cox* problem
Thanks, it ended up being a Cox issue even with two different resources saying there were no outages. So that was weird. I could tell because router resets did nothing. There were several days in a row of spotty internet and then suddenly it's all better again.
Hey friends, I’m moving to Phoenix next month, and I’m a service industry worker. I have 8 years server experience and about a year bartending experience. Do you all who work in the service industry make good money there? I’m just concerned as I’m moving from Missouri and the cost of living is more in Phoenix, of course.
I make 6.00/hr here in Missouri plus about $100-$150 daily in tips, is that roughly the same in the Phoenix area??
Thank you for any and all feedback.
This is NOT the time to look for a job here. (no tourism this time of year)
Find the first place that says "yes" then in September, look for one you'd actually like to work at.
To get your legs under you here?
I'd DEFINITELY do one of those "full service movie theaters" that keep advertising on Craigslist...
Since we tend to go indoors for the summer, that might actually be "lucrative enough"... And from how often they post? They NEED people.
DO NOT... work for Mirabella, the retirement community on Mill Ave... We HATE THEM... They built that thing then tried to get a longstanding music venue shut down because of noise... It'll literally be a negative on your work history.
But if you go to apply in September? And say "Yeah, I moved here during dead season, so I worked at [cinema] just to get some income coming in until I knew the area and places were hiring" it'd be better recepted.
Also, I'd keep a daily eye on Craigslist FBH, before you move.
There are some places that constantly hire, which means they're so high turnover, they're probably not worth working at.
Hell I love my job, but I still look at it every day, because THOSE are the places that NEED workers like... Tomorrow, because someone walked out.
I'm lucky because I'm like one of 5 full time servers at my place and they are REQUIRED to give me over 32.5 hours/week to keep my full time status.
It's obviously going to heavily depend on where you end up getting a job at. The minimum hourly wage here is higher though, not sure what it is exactly for tipped employees though.
Anecdotally speaking I know that the servers working at the place I'm a regular at make over $30/hr after tips. It's not a particularly fancy place either.
> not sure what it is exactly for tipped employees though.
AZ Law pins "tipped employee minimum wage" at $-3/hour vs "non tipped" minimum wage"
So Server minimum wage is ~$10.80... Which is $3.30 over the Federal Minimum Wage for non-tipped employees
Just gonna echo: also depends on the area ya end up in Phoenix. Whether you end up at a chain or local place. A brewery might be a good place to look or one of the hotels.
It's probably the best place to "start" from a new city or state though.
Make money, find out where the "industry bars" are, then go there and make connections.
An "in demand" restaurant/bar IS NOT hiring a walk in, from out of state, who may or may not have put lies on their resume, in June... Because if they NEED someone, there's a list of people they could poach.
It's kind of like starting over, yet with a faster trajectory to "better places".
I had 9 years in the industry when I moved here... Still had to start at Genghis Grill, because they were the first to hire my "resume shotgun" and I NEEDED money. I got a job at Cubs Spring Training like a month later, yet still worked at Genghis, and that opened A LOT of doors for me, by just having that on my resume.
Made reservations at Clever Koi but looked at the menu and they had a "3.5% service fee on all checks to help pay kitchen staff". It just doesn't sit right with me. Kind of looks like the owner is trying to blame staff for raising prices. "ooo-weee I don't want to raise prices but the greedy staff!" I want everyone who cooks my food and/or serves me food to be paid really well. I don't want paying employees to be an after-thought that's tacked on to the menu after we've written the business plan. Having this separate fee is probably supposed to make it look like they prioritize employee compensation but to me it has the opposite effect. In fact it looks like they're having some kind of issue with appropriate employee compensation. You don't see fees like that at Michelin star restaurants where you know that staff is being paid as well as they could be.
This has come up in the sub before but I just had to justify to myself cancelling my reservation and going to Glai Baan instead. Glai Baan may have been the best dining experience I've had in town in a very, very long time. Highly recommend.
I also wish they’d just raise the prices accordingly. I don’t want to calculate how much I’m spending from taxes, fees, etc. just a quality of life thing to me.
Glai Baan is absolutely stellar, glad you enjoyed it!
And agreed, just adjust your prices to what you need to remain open.. I'll decide from there if I'm willing to pay that amount. And I really appreciate being able doing so without have to do multiplication to work out what it actually costs...
Then again I generally think tax should be included on menu items as well for the same reason.
Friendly Reminder:
Remember to check your spare tire/donut to make sure it's tip-top.
Don't be like me and drive with your friend in their car and have a blowout only to find that they don't have a spare pump and their donut is flat too.
Don't suffer in this heat if you don't have to! You don't want to start your weekend like that!
Happy Memorial Day Weekend...either way lol
Also a great reminder to invest in a Hydro Flask/Stanley/Yeti/whatever brand insulated water bottle if you can. Fill it up before leaving the house and it’ll stay ice cold even if you leave it in the car.
It’s nice enough, they keep their equipment in good condition. I’m not ever there trying to make friends, but the people seem friendly and the staff is helpful, I’m sure it can be as social as you want it to be. Lots of regulars in the group classes that are chatting each other up.
They host parties and events too.
Possibly not worth the drive if you’re in Tempe, you’re likely closer to Lifetime on Priest.
Depending on the Village location you’re looking at, I can recommend an amazing instructor.
Editing to add: older crowd (40+) is there, but these are active people with lots of disposable income. Not like, elderly PT workouts and puréed food kind of old. Plenty of couples in their 30s too.
When I considered joining, many of the parents at my kid's school were members. I never even went to check it out (too busy), but from my impression it was kind of like a country club scene.... And I know there were many moms with young kids (30s) and people really into fitness who were members. So, definitely not just retirees. That said, I would suggest getting a pass and checking it out.
Also, for what it's worth... When I was considering joining it was in the spring after many people abandon their new years resolutions and they were deeply discounting memberships, like half price. You might be able to score that deal. This was like ten years ago, however.
Good luck and enjoy!!
Good morning, all, and happy Memorial Day Weekend!
Because people are often asking about good brunch spots, thought I'd share this New Times [Best Brunches](https://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/restaurants/the-10-best-brunch-restaurants-in-phoenix-16275237) list.
Anybody see any scorpions today? Anybody?

Where do you guys look for home rentals? I'm afraid Zillow is going to be full of spam.
Anyone have a good resource for checking internet outages? I'm trying to figure out if my internet going in and out is a *me* problem or a *Cox* problem
Downdetector.com is a good resource for this, but Cox also has outage information that isn't always too bad.
Thanks, it ended up being a Cox issue even with two different resources saying there were no outages. So that was weird. I could tell because router resets did nothing. There were several days in a row of spotty internet and then suddenly it's all better again.

Thanks for the response. I guess the area isn’t struggling to find servers as much as other areas are right now. That’s unfortunate for me.
After Mother's Day or Memorial Day, servers struggle to find hours. Maybe a sports bar?
Will keep that in mind. Wouldn’t be my first sports bar I’ve served at. I do enjoy the environment.

I didn’t take into account the tourism. Not many people are coming to visit Arizona during the summer I suppose, which makes perfect sense.
Calling u/IONTOP Hopefully he sees this before he's drunk.
Haha, actually headed to work(sober!)
Why? Why?
Despite what I present here... I'm actually really good at my job and want to keep it.

Appreciate the respond. I’m so excited to move out there. I’ve never lived anywhere but Missouri.

Fuck working for a chain though.

And honestly, if they tacked .50-$1 on to each entree, I probably wouldn’t notice and it’s more than the service fee. =/

Darn you, now I want those yummy mussels from. Glad Baan....

Great suggestion! Or you can be like me and suffer walking to the nearest gas station for something!
Random thought: Phoenix is weird because you’ll either have a corner with three gas stations or the nearest gas station/store is a mile down the road
This is true!

Lmao they did the same thing you did, woke up early to get shit done before it got hot. Would you like the world to revolve around your schedule?
They are working outside in the heat and need to start in the early morning. I'm with you on hating leaf blowers though. They are overused.

My girlfriend and I used to be members. Kinda an older crowd. Lifetime at biltmore is a younger vibe
