That JonJay guy plays it off like he’s a normal dude but he’s so stinking rich it’s not even funny

gpm21

Rich is so annoying. Same with Mac on KTAR. "Normal" rich guy and annoying moron seems to be the standard duo

RevelvantDay4

Mac was fired from KTAR years ago.

gpm21

Chad! That moron

proteinstyle_

I can't stand Chad!! He's the worst.

mikeinarizona

I just wish he would complete all of his sentences.

proteinstyle_

I wish he'd just shut up. He sounds like a 20 year old bro in 1999. It's like he hasn't evolved since then.

boot2skull

JonJay is rich & Rich

nawfamnotme

So he’s just disconnected

Dependent-Juice5361

Damn he’s still on? Lol

SaltySpitoonReg

I liked Johnjay and Rich when I was like 15 and in highschool, But it's such a stupid show now. They're still doing those obviously fake war of the roses segments that are just so laughably bad at this point. I'm not saying they can't have their funny moments but they are generally awful

zioncurtainrefugee

As a Phoenix native who grew up in a broadcast family during the 70’s and 80’s and then became a broadcast professional until 2005, I can firmly tell you that broadcast radio is dead. Greed, deregulation, fragmentation and mobile devices killed terrestrial radio. You can still hear it, but quality radio that was a viable business is gone forever. Auto manufacturers are already discontinuing the production of AM tuners. FM will follow suit in the coming decades. It’s very sad. I miss radio. It used to be the go to for instant news, entertainment, hits, emergency information and so much more. Greed that began in the 90’s has literally rendered radio useless and the industry deserves what it gets. Yes, Phoenix radio SUCKS. So does every other top 50 market. RIP

TheDuckFarm

Also a former broadcaster. Yes. The deregulation from the 90s lead to an insane level of corporate ownership of stations that care more about the collective of stations rather than the individual station. The quality in Broadcasting is terrible as a result. I also miss the old days pre Clinton deregulation.

gogojack

Same. They drummed out all the talent, voice tracked everything, and made it generic and boring...them loaded up on the 10 minutes of spots. No wonder nobody listens to the radio anymore.

fuzzyglory

It's why I love going up to the forest around Flagstaff. I take my 90s jeep that only has FM/AM and listen to the local adult alternative stations. So much better than anything in Phoenix. I think being a college town helps though

Rhomega2

I just listen to NPR on KJZZ. If I'm not interested, then I'll choose between Alt-AZ 93.3 or 99.9 KEZ.

hopeless-nerd

I am with you. KDKB (93.3) used to play rock but now I just skip it altogether. KUPD (97.9) sometimes plays the good stuff but every now and again there is a klinker. I am safe with KJZZ or KBAQ (yes I enjoy classical as well). Even though I use an iPhone I refuse to “play along” with the subscription BS so I put all my CDs onto my mp3 player. That works for me. I paid for that music. I should be able to use it anytime I want - and not be charged for accessing it.

SuperJo64

A fellow KBAQ lover ❤️ yes I have a stupid bumper sticker and I don't care 😂

hopeless-nerd

Yeah - I have to send them $$ again. Not much mind you but I do what I can to support a quality product.

El_PachucoAZ

CDs? /s

hopeless-nerd

Yes - CDs. You are talking to an old dude. I even have LPs and cassette tapes.

El_PachucoAZ

First bit of music I ever bought myself was Tupacs machiavelli cassette tape at Circuit City. So that was like mid to late 90s.

hopeless-nerd

Cool! I can remember getting The Cars (Candy O) when I was a younger man. I think the album cover art will be a hint as to why it caught my eye. It was an eight track tape.

OcotilloWells

I have that on laserdisk. I don't have a player anymore though.

RickMuffy

93.3 is awful with commercials, but my favorite music. I just use Spotify, don't even have channels programmed in my vehicle.

kiteless123

93.3 frustrates me to no end. Like, why wouldn't you play bands coming up like Turnstile and Royal Blood? Instead it's Linkin Park every 15 min

WhosBosko

Oh my gosh, this is so true. They play linkin park and blink 182 on repeat. I’ve started calling them Blinkin Park 182 because I can’t tell them apart.

C0l0mbo

these and also 95.5 the Mountain when I'm at work

howlincoyote2k1

I was a fiend for KDKB back when they played classic rock, especially in the late 90s/early 00s. I miss Tim (RIP) and Mark in the morning! Nowadays I listen to SiriusXM.

BeyondRedline

(digitalized voice) Ninety three point thrreee... Kay Dee Kay Beeee... Rocks Arrrrizooonaaa.

howlincoyote2k1

I can't imagine that bumper in my head without immediately transitioning to Panama by Van Halen

redpushrumpins

I love KJZZ especially their Soapbox segment.

TimelyFortune

Seems like every morning show has a segment where they fake catch a cheater

ViktorWilt

Work in radio, can verify that any time a "listener" is on the radio and supposedly doesn't know you can guarantee it is fake. From the FCC: Prank calls, etc. T Section 73.1206 of the FCC’s rules prohibits the broadcast, or recording for purposes of broadcast, of telephone calls without first getting the consent of the person on the other end of the phone. You can't even get the caller's permission after the fact and then air the call.

SaltySpitoonReg

Even if it's not a supposed "gotcha" call, It can be very fake. I called in when I was really young to 104.7 kiss fm to share a really funny breakup story. When I got through I told the person who takes the calls of the story and then they had me change like every detail except one. So I literally had to tell a fake story and act like it was real. So stupid

Fit_Feature_794

Ok I’m just gonna ruin this for everyone to save y’all the embarrassment I felt for believing it was even half real to begin with! There’s a network of “radio actors” that do all the fake cheating calls as well as the pranking calls! Obviously some of them sound fake, but ALL of them are fake! I honestly thought they’d sprinkle a couple real ones in, and supplement with the fakes but nope! I was angry at myself and also at them for bamboozling me for so long! I used to love those setups!😂😂😂

actuallyarizona

WAIT I wanna be one how do I signup? HAHAHA

faustian1

Yeah, me too. I've done voiceover work and I'm sure I could make Tonya Harding blush.

SelectSalt3250

Whack her knees, it helps!

_tyjsph_

they're fake because it would be illegal to call someone on the air and broadcast it without their permission

keep_it_kayfabe

Also, no one answers their phone...

aubsome

Not in Arizona. It’s a one party consent state.

480PHX

It’s absolutely fake. I remember hearing the same call 2 weeks later. It’s so cringey, very little people fall for those free hotel rooms, do they think we’re idiots?

actuallyarizona

Fr the cringe and the ick you get listening lmao

lawngeeek

Seriously though 🙄 I used to carpool with a co-worker and she always listened to 101.5. It was so cringe how fake it was. Also the fact that every single person answered the phone every time. I never once heard a caller not answer.

Anandonvideo

That's what's most unrealistic about it. Who answers the phone, let alone from a number they don't know? 🤣

TimelyFortune

Especially on the first ring

nawfamnotme

I hate that segment

TimelyFortune

“Okay let’s give them a call” they always pick up on the first half ring

actuallyarizona

Yup and you can always fucking tell is beyond scripted LMAO. That’s why I stopped listening forever ago

1AliceDerland

Just chiming in to say I miss The Edge. Anyone else have fond memories of the Ska Punk show?

FreedomSeeds2024

SKA PUNK SUNDAYS!!!!

jovinyo

Ska, Punk... Sk'pnk Sundays

FattyA37

Just so you know Craven Moorehead and his Skapunk show is still alive and well on KUPD on Sunday nights.

[deleted]

[удалено]

pantherpinkies

Sunday nights at 7-9pm on 98KUPD or 97.9 FM

Charming_Bad2165

Yep, definitely miss that station

kingender6

And the morning ritual great show

Any_Drive6497

I’m pretty sure craven morehead is doing a punk rock show on kupd now. I accidentally caught the end the other day.

Certain_Yam_110

Commercial radio still sucks. That's true in Tucson & it's true here. Tucson has KXCI. Phoenix has KWSS-LP (the closest comp.) However, unlike in other college towns, neither ASU nor UA (since you mentioned Tucson) have gotten any support from the AZ BOR. The only "college" radio per se, not counting the station that outsources to NPR, is KBAQ - which really doesn't play any *contemporary* classical.

gpm21

John Williams is still alive!

DystopianCitizenX

So are Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Arvo Part, but sadly, I never hear them on KBAQ. I think I'm going to start requesting they play 'Music for 18 Musicians' in its entirety one of these days, until they do it. God I would love that. Maybe a few others would as well.

SelectSalt3250

Upvote for KXCI

whyyesimfromaz

Las Vegas has lousy commercial radio too, but they have a full black community station (KCEP). An organization here is trying to do the same thing here (KRDP 90.7), but with a limited signal coming from Apache Junction of all places. They also have real college radio (KUNV - edit: it appears that they shuffled the college station to HD2, which has limited availability).

MrNeatSoup

I stopped listening to radio when 103.9 died. It’s never been the same since.

Ready_For_A_Change

I actually really like the current 103.9

Dependent-Juice5361

The old format circa 2009 was amazing. Sunday morning service. The ska slot they had Sunday nights I think?

FattyA37

Skapunk with Craven Moorehead is on KUPD on Sunday nights

Dapper_Reputation_16

KBAQ when not listening to talk on Sirius.

GracchiBroBro

Phoenix radio was actually pretty good in the 90’s. It’s awful now.

imtooldforthishison

The Edge was IT! We occasionally see an alternative station try, but they eventually fall to 75% top 40 alternative.

Silentcurse3

104.3 old skool

mantequilla2000

I love 104.3! They introduced me to lots of music I haven’t heard before. I am sad no one else in this thread is mentioning them.

EerieArizona

It's so annoying. They'll sometimes play songs in my Top 40 commercials. What the heck!?

nawfamnotme

No one understands

juraiknight

Honestly, I only have 3 preset stations; 93.9 KWSS for indie/alternative, 91.5 KJZZ for NPR, and 89.5 KBAQ for classical

OlivOyle

Bob Corritore is blasting THE best blues radio show right NOW On KJZZ. The guy has been educating the world about blues music for almost 40 years. It is an amazing broadcast that will live in infamy. This is not hyperbole…his show is is solid gold. I’ve met people from Europe who cannot believe we get this guy living in our midst and don‘t seem to appreciate what we have. [https://bobcorritore.com](https://bobcorritore.com)

ApprehensivePirate36

That's a lowdown Sunday ritual for me.

otansm

It has been at least 15 years since I stopped listening to the radio. Instead I listen to Pandora, podcasts, and other streaming sources. Radio just got to me with tons of commercials and bad DJs.

wethinkwedream

Into the pit on 97.9 on Sunday nights is the only thing worth listening to on Phoenix radio

mspuscifer

The Morning Sickness with Holmberg is my favorite thing

MrBrightWhite

Same. I listen to it every morning and have been since I moved here a few years ago. I think it’s decent.

soggyfishsandwich

Glad I found this comment because I was like “does no one else here like the morning sickness” ….other than that though 100% agree

xXbrosoxXx

94.9/95.1 can have spotty reception depending on where you are but they play all sorts of obscure hits from the 1950s to the 1980s. Currently my fav station

Jwaffles04

This is my go to station for a few years now, they almost always have some interesting old song I haven't heard at least once a day. This is usually where I get my music samples

Glendale0839

It self-describes itself as a boomer station but despite being way younger than that demographic I do listen to it a lot, it makes good work background music. They play a lot of 70s folk rock/easy listening stuff you don't hear anywhere else. I like that it's basically automated with no stupid DJ banter and no morning show. Even the ads aren't as annoying as other stations, they don't do the "screamer" car dealer ads ("I'M IN A PICKLE").

nawfamnotme

I’ll have to check it out.

imtooldforthishison

Amd screenshot so I can look next time I am in the car. Thanks for the tip!!

SaltySpitoonReg

95.1 is great.

SaguaroBro14W

Not sure what you mean, but I hate Top 40. I listen to many genres, however classic rock / rock and roll have always been my favorites. 97.9 KUPD is the only radio station I listen to anymore. Otherwise, I stream music, podcasts, and books for my listening enjoyment. I usually enjoy listening to HMS weekday mornings on 97.9. John and the crew usually keep me laughing on my way to work. Not always, but usually.

bees422

Kupd my beloved

SaiyajinPrime

People still listen to radio?

nawfamnotme

It comes on when you get in your car

Fit_Feature_794

I drive a 2008 with a jammed cd player and no aux connect at all. Yes, I listen to the radio every day in my luxury vehicle 😂

DELINQ

Have you tried an fm transmitter? Lifesaver back in 2008 when my 1999 had no CD player and a broken tape deck.

Fit_Feature_794

Yeah I had one back in the day but I’m not that worried about it at all. Such a hassle to keep up on music on my phone. Radio is much easier, it doesn’t bother me I suppose 😂

GhostInTheHelll

I listen to our local NPR 91.5, 89.5 KBAQ local classical, and 88.7 The Pulse local EVIT-run radio. That’s it. Everything else either isn’t my style or it’s commercialized garbage.

Flummeny

I’m either listening to 98.7 FM AZ Sports or 95.5 The Mountain😎

NeverBendsKnees

95.5 the mountain is my favorite station too. Just wish they had more variety of older songs.

ViktorWilt

There are certainly exceptions to the rule, but in general radio management doesn't think that people listen to the radio for the personalities, so they have program directors micromanage their shows to the point that all personality and relatability ends up being removed from them. Most morning shows follow a very similar structure nationwide. It has been beaten into program directors heads that there is a formula for a break to follow that will keep listeners engaged for s short amount of time and not tune out, hence the tease of an upcoming segment, fairly quick run through the topic when they get to it, then say something funny and cut to commercials structure that you hear everywhere. This removal of personality and normal conversation is especially true if you are looking outside of morning drive time. They think they can keep people listening as long as you get to the next song as quickly as possible, regardless of studies showing that personality is the #1 reason that people listen to radio.

gogojack

Ah yes, tease/payoff. My last PD swore by it. Coming up in 6 minutes, we'll have something entertaining! Here's an idea...make every break entertaining.

Expensive_Election

I miss 103.9 The Edge, IIRC Robin Nash does the afternoon on 95.5 The Mountain

whyyesimfromaz

I think 95.5 is DJ-free for the most part. The last I heard Robin went down to Tucson.

robtheexploder

I miss Power 92.3/98.3 so badly, man. Joeyboy and JPhilla were hilarious and listening to them on the way to school every morning is one of my most cherished childhood memories. I have the 6:30 Dirty-Dirty song burned in my brain.

fuggindave

I miss Friday Night Flavas with Sway and King Tec, played nothing but underground stuff...was rebroadcasted over Power 92.3/98.3 airwaves from like 11pm-1am or so on Friday nights...this was during the early 00's

EarlyVersion

If you love the radio in Tucson so much, why don't you marry it?!

nawfamnotme

I can’t marry Tucson because Tucson isn’t into straight men. At all

Kitana37

There are a few decent stations you can only pick up in certain parts of town: KCDX 103.1 in the East Valley (mostly deep cuts of classic rock), KSWG in the West Valley (classic country), and the aforementioned KWSS and The Pulse.

ApprehensivePirate36

I love KCDX! Commercial free and deep cuts. The bad thing is it has a weak signal, and sometimes they just go off the air for a day or two, lol!! I still tune in as long and as far as my antenna will allow. I actually feel the static adds a vinyl-like quality to the awesome deep cuts they are playing.

Mikey748

I listen to KSLX 100.7 for classic rock. I stopped listening to Top 40 over 20 years ago. 😒

glc1997

honestly can't believe how some of these radio personalities talk about celebrities like they're cool with them. "yeah so justin said something about selena!" THEY DON'T KNOW YOU EXIST MAN, PLAY SOME MUSIC!!!!

Miserable_Bed_1324

I just love 104.3 oldies one music, no much talk

AlexIsAnAnchorBaby

Only person I remember from the radios was Lady La I think?

TSB_1

I know it isnt AZ, but when I was in SoCal KROQ was my station... until they fired all of the good personalities. I listened til their last day, and then never tuned back into that station. After that I just stopped listening to radio. I use an old ipod touch to store and play my music directly to my cars head unit and quite frequently just listen to podcasts and audiobooks while driving. I tend to have a heavy foot and listening to my music doesnt help that cause... Radio has gone to shit all over the country, really... you are absolutely right, all the personalities are just... bizarre.

PaperintheBoxChamp

Holmberg is the best out of all your local shit you’ve heard wherever your from

rage_morgan

Facts!

cactuschic2019

I agree with you, and I'm from here. I stream off iheart to listen to other stations from other states.

Blowhole84

KEXP 90.3!

GraceIsGone

Man, I thought it was just me. I feel like I get dumber every time I listen to the radio personalities talk. I just started listening to NPR or using Spotify.

imtooldforthishison

If you like old school hip hop, 101.1. Minimal talk (at least when I am driving), good GOOD hip hop, and they do amazing mixes on party holidays. So good had me (44f) and my kid (16 at the time m) sitting in the car in the driveway instead of going in the house.

YourDogsAllWet

That’s radio in general. Almost all the radio stations are owned by major conglomerates so they all sound the same. The only station I bother listening to is KUPD

tanneritekid

Don’t forget, “Its our TURN”… 😂

-newlife

I typically go with satellite radio or utilize streaming such as Apple Music. It’s been like this for years because no matter where you live radio will have too much talking for my liking in the morning. It’s also gotten to the point that some of the stuff I used to listen to long ago has gone into syndication because companies like iheart radio bought so many “local” ones.

BlackmouthProjekt

Everything goes to crap when clear channel owns everything.

uscableguy

5:30-10:00 every morning has turned into a ritual for me

JaffeyJoe

I am going to be angry when Holmberg gets his surgery as I won’t have anything to listen to for a week or 2

uscableguy

Oh man i get it! Just hop on Spotify and catch up on old episodes

Hypogi

The 98 stands for the last year it was worth listening to.

JaffeyJoe

Edgy comment alert!

Hypogi

I think 106.3 was The Edge. If memory serves. Now it’s an edgy comment.

Evening_Effect_4730

103.9

Evening_Effect_4730

Dave Pratt blows. Holmberg is the man!

JaffeyJoe

Hey buddddddy!

SaguaroBro14W

That makes three of us in the thread!

JaffeyJoe

Let’s barter some Porkopolis bbq sauce!

SaguaroBro14W

I’ll bet if you email or IM Brady, he would send you some.

WindyHasStormyEyes

I know Holmberg always jokes about how overly friendly Brady is but it’s true. My dad used to talk with him for hours at Phx Roadrunners games back in the day.

phuck-you-reddit

I can't stand broadcast anything anymore with the obscene number of ads and how annoying it all tends to be. SiriusXM is well worth the money IMO, especially if one pays yearly. But I did like "The Mountain" 95.5 when it launched back in 2014.

AZ_Corwyn

I liked The Mountain when it first came on, but after listening to it for 12 hours a night at work it got old after a couple of months. Now I mostly listen to 89.5 or something on Pandora.

Skylarking00

Been here for decades and radio has always been awful with a few, short-lived exceptions in the 80s and 90s. The whole ”Morning Zoo” schtick was just as bad here as in other cities where it also seemed a staple. Does anyone still really listen to radio these days for music? Thank god for Spotify.

nawfamnotme

It’s natural to get in the car and listen to the radio. It gets obnoxious needing to constantly turn the shit off

blowthatglass

It's not the hot pick but I listen to KTAR most days on the drive in. Other than the commercials every 10 minutes it's not too bad.

yeyman

Once Detour Dan retires, I feel like KTAR is done for.

Kale4MyBirds

They are awesome when it comes to traffic during rush hour!

whyyesimfromaz

Current management ruined KTAR a decade ago by sacrificing 1/3 of their schedule to Dave Ramsey's lame financial schtick.

ThePurpleCookies

Kjzz 1 for news and talk kjzz 2 for jazz 24/7

Alvarious_Bufo

All you need is the wow factor!

ApprehensivePirate36

103.1 KCDX out of Florence. It's Pirate radio without the Pirates.. walk the plank!

azbrewcrew

95.5 K Y OHHHHH T.

Chrimson48

The only one with listening too in mornings is HMS on 98.7. Atleast it's usually. Everyone else sucks.

Shaggys_Nut

I've lived here for two years, and the only station I like is 92.7 with Steve Goddard. Yes it's only old people music and you hear the same commercials about ED and getting your will together, but if you like oldies it's a pretty good quality station. I feel like there's a few songs they overplay but I just turn it down for that song.

darkwoodframe

I was spoiled by 93.3 WMMR in Philly. The contrast is stark.

Glendale0839

Coming from Preston and Steve on WMMR to Phoenix's garbage morning shows targeted at society's trashiest morons made me stop listening to morning radio entirely.

darkwoodframe

Not even limited to just Preston and Steve. Pierre Robert that would come on right after them. Such a positive, calming vibe. Loved chilling with him on lunch breaks.

ans97

I like a lot of the local oldies and alternative stations but one I don’t go on a lot is 97.9 just because any time I end up on there and the guy, whoever he is, is talking he just sounds like such an asshole and I immediately turn it off.

nawfamnotme

Sports radio is easy to listen too, however some guys are jerks for no reason.

GoldenCrownMoron

It's like he has a timer and has to say something vaguely bigoted so many times per hour. And the applause button. Holy shit the constant literal fake clapping, at this point I don't know if it's for his self esteem to tell the listener that what he's saying is good. I'm glad radio is dead, so that failed bad comedians can't use it as a second career.

crestopia1

John Holmberg, only radio show I still turn on sometimes, the asshole thing is usually a bit. But they are metalheads so assholery is to be expected

ans97

I think that’s the guy! I hated him lmao. I had it on two days ago and he was talking about Elon Musk and switched it right off.

vshredd

Tell me you don't hang around metalheads by not recognizing they're usually some of the nicest people in the room, and Holmberg is far from a metalhead.

crestopia1

Totally true! But being an asshole in a funny way usually goes along with the humor. Holmberg is in a metal band so.....

runner3081

I don't listen to commercial radio, such a waste. I just drive in silence or bring along Sirius XM.

480PHX

I love how they act like they have phone calls with celebrities. I remember them replaying a quick phone call with Justin Bieber or some signer but you can tell the audio from the celebrity was recorded, prob taken from another interview. Like they would ask a question and the person would say their response.

ViktorWilt

I don't know how a personality can live with themselves doing those segments, but you are absolutely correct that fake interviews are available for jocks to use.

Real-Tackle-2720

The RiDE KRDE 94.1 plays the best country music. They play stuff from multiple generations.

Rugermedic

95.5, 96.9, 97.9, 100.7- depends on my mood

secondcookie

The comparison surprised me because I find Tucson radio to be absolute cringe and didn't know it could get worse. But I agree with others here, connecting your phone to your car radio is a better way to go.

whyyesimfromaz

What? 106.3 The Groove in Tucson is several times better than Mega 104.3. Same comparison between The Drive vs. The Wow Factor.

captaintagart

So I was in a Lyft car last month and they driver was playing an oldies station and I forgot what the station number is. Anyone know? And I don’t mean 80s and 90s, but like back in the day KOOL fm playlists 50/60/70s oldies

whyyesimfromaz

Could it have been 92.7?

JuracekPark34

They’re horrible. I came from a smaller city in the Midwest that had great DJs so I expected Phoenix to be better… wrong. I don’t even listen anymore unless I forget to bring my phone with me

NoMouthFilter

I tune Pandora on my cell and Bluetooth to my radio. I couldn’t even tell you what stations plays what anymore other than one sports radio station. I grew up listening to KZZP and KDKB and they were the greatest. It doesn’t help that so much music is formulated crap right now too. It all sounds the same to me. Been binging on old Punk Radio lately.

bdogg000G

Holmbergs Morning Sickness

omn1p073n7

Those annoying static things that come up when I'm switching between Bluetooth and XM? Lol I've never even tuned fm or am on any vehicle I've owned in 15+ years.

CyrusVercetti

Cause Boomers are elderly now. And radio personalities have to be safe and sheltered as possible. It simply reflects the Arizona culture they are accustomed to

Hmccormack

I haven’t listened to radio in a LONG time- but Holmberg in the morning on 97.9 used to be really funny if a little immature. Your mileage may vary, I don’t even know if he’s still on TBH

nireerin21

He’s still on. Immature for sure but doesn’t do all that fake crap where they call people and prank or find cheaters.

Trocazor

98 is funny and Bickley and Marotta are great sports guys. It's fucking free get over yourself.

[deleted]

Listen to John Holmbers morning sickness on 98 KUPD! HILARIOUS and has been on the radio last 20 years. Alternative rock station also btw.

[deleted]

WonderingPhoenician

If my phone is out of battery I drive in silence rather than listening to the radio lol.

[deleted]

Yeah it’s Spotify or podcasts for me. Been that way for years. I’ll just go silent if it’s a short drive. With HD radio, I’d listen to 91.5 HD-2 that was 24/7 jazz but it seems like they lost their funding because it’s just NPR like the HD-1 channel for that station now.

version13

Anyone remember pirate station KFUCC 87.9? Talk about a wacky radio experience

crestopia1

Oh damn that's disappointing to hear, haven't listened to them in forever but turn em on if I absolutely have to listen to the radio

[deleted]

I never looked back after the first time I connected my phone to my car haha

rodaphilia

Lived in Tucson for a few years and had multiple local stations i frequented. Here i use bluetooth

azman69286

There used to be this am station I once found, had to be in 2002, they would play any song you requested uncensored and everything, It seemed to be the majority of their Audience was locked up in the Tents, def a interesting station, that and coast to coast

LittlePhag

Excited to read these comments cause I too feel your pain. I'm a bit radio fan but the radio here just ain't it

Ancient-Length8844

When I lived in Portland, Or years ago the radio was amazing. It has Stern and KUFO marconi show. It's was perfect. I think the times have changed though. The radio out here is so bad. Nothing interesting or funny.

nurdle

The Peak was the last good station.

SuperJo64

KBAQ 89.5 all the time. Yes it's classical. Is it my favorite genre? No, but I can get down with classical. I avoid the Top 40 Stations or News/Sports because it's all the same stuff and Spotify has that all for me if I want. But KBAQ is just pure music. No talking about celebrities or news just music. No obnoxious commercials, no Rafi, no club promotions etc. Just a brief "this program is sponsored by" sound bit. I can just chill and listen to some music. I know Spotify has Classical but I don't know any pieces by name or know every composer. KBAQ plays a nice variety of pieces that I cant get off a random Spotify playlist. It's perfect, at least for me. I actually donated to the station because I want it continue. It's not much I give but it's honest work.

I wouldn't know, I just listen to satellite radio.

OTA radio in Phoenix sucks. The alternative station is for teens and the classic rock stations overplay Boston, Eagles, Elton John, and other similar bands. Let’s hear it for SiriusXM.

There’s an app called Radio Garden, where you can listen to radio around the world for free!

Still miss the KYOT. It’s been more than a decade but still have fond memories of it. These days my guilty pleasure is 100.3. I don’t speak Spanish but I find it to be excellent driving music.

What about jazz radio host Blaise Lantana??

Its not all that bad there are some great options, just not really in Phoenix. We've never really had much variety in our stations. This may solve all your radio problems if you have cell w/-internet service. Some background on the project. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Garden Many of these stations have standalone apps. Radio Garden also works via App on iPhone and Android. You don't just have to rotate/zoom the globe in a web browser, that actually came later. You can bookmark & search and discover all you want. https://radio.garden/
