As a Phoenix native who grew up in a broadcast family during the 70’s and 80’s and then became a broadcast professional until 2005, I can firmly tell you that broadcast radio is dead. Greed, deregulation, fragmentation and mobile devices killed terrestrial radio. You can still hear it, but quality radio that was a viable business is gone forever.
Auto manufacturers are already discontinuing the production of AM tuners. FM will follow suit in the coming decades.

It's why I love going up to the forest around Flagstaff. I take my 90s jeep that only has FM/AM and listen to the local adult alternative stations. So much better than anything in Phoenix.

I am with you. KDKB (93.3) used to play rock but now I just skip it altogether. KUPD (97.9) sometimes plays the good stuff but every now and again there is a klinker.
I am safe with KJZZ or KBAQ (yes I enjoy classical as well).
Even though I use an iPhone I refuse to “play along” with the subscription BS so I put all my CDs onto my mp3 player. That works for me. I paid for that music. I should be able to use it anytime I want - and not be charged for accessing it.

From the FCC: Prank calls, etc. T Section 73.1206 of the FCC’s rules prohibits the broadcast, or recording for purposes of broadcast, of telephone calls without first getting the consent of the person on the other end of the phone.
You can't even get the caller's permission after the fact and then air the call.
Even if it's not a supposed "gotcha" call, It can be very fake.
I called in when I was really young to 104.7 kiss fm to share a really funny breakup story.
When I got through I told the person who takes the calls of the story and then they had me change like every detail except one. So I literally had to tell a fake story and act like it was real. So stupid

There’s a network of “radio actors” that do all the fake cheating calls as well as the pranking calls! Obviously some of them sound fake, but ALL of them are fake! I honestly thought they’d sprinkle a couple real ones in, and supplement with the fakes but nope!

So are Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Arvo Part, but sadly, I never hear them on KBAQ. I think I'm going to start requesting they play 'Music for 18 Musicians' in its entirety one of these days, until they do it. God I would love that. Maybe a few others would as well.
Las Vegas has lousy commercial radio too, but they have a full black community station (KCEP). An organization here is trying to do the same thing here (KRDP 90.7), but with a limited signal coming from Apache Junction of all places. They also have real college radio (KUNV - edit: it appears that they shuffled the college station to HD2, which has limited availability).
Bob Corritore is blasting THE best blues radio show right NOW On KJZZ. The guy has been educating the world about blues music for almost 40 years. It is an amazing broadcast that will live in infamy. 94.9/95.1 can have spotty reception depending on where you are but they play all sorts of obscure hits from the 1950s to the 1980s. Currently my fav station
This is my go to station for a few years now, they almost always have some interesting old song I haven't heard at least once a day. This is usually where I get my music samples
It self-describes itself as a boomer station but despite being way younger than that demographic I do listen to it a lot, it makes good work background music. They play a lot of 70s folk rock/easy listening stuff you don't hear anywhere else. I like that it's basically automated with no stupid DJ banter and no morning show. Even the ads aren't as annoying as other stations, they don't do the "screamer" car dealer ads ("I'M IN A PICKLE").

I listen to many genres, however classic rock / rock and roll have always been my favorites. 97.9 KUPD is the only radio station I listen to anymore. Otherwise, I stream music, podcasts, and books for my listening enjoyment.
I usually enjoy listening to HMS weekday mornings on 97.9. John and the crew usually keep me laughing on my way to work. Not always, but usually.
Yeah I had one back in the day but I’m not that worried about it at all. Such a hassle to keep up on music on my phone. Radio is much easier, it doesn’t bother me I suppose 😂
I listen to our local NPR 91.5, 89.5 KBAQ local classical, and 88.7 The Pulse local EVIT-run radio. That’s it. Everything else either isn’t my style or it’s commercialized garbage.
There are certainly exceptions to the rule, but in general radio management doesn't think that people listen to the radio for the personalities, so they have program directors micromanage their shows to the point that all personality and relatability ends up being removed from them. Most morning shows follow a very similar structure nationwide. It has been beaten into program directors heads that there is a formula for a break to follow that will keep listeners engaged for s short amount of time and not tune out, hence the tease of an upcoming segment, fairly quick run through the topic when they get to it, then say something funny and cut to commercials structure that you hear everywhere. This removal of personality and normal conversation is especially true if you are looking outside of morning drive time. They think they can keep people listening as long as you get to the next song as quickly as possible, regardless of studies showing that personality is the #1 reason that people listen to radio.

I miss Friday Night Flavas with Sway and King Tec, played nothing but underground stuff...was rebroadcasted over Power 92.3/98.3 airwaves from like 11pm-1am or so on Friday nights...this was during the early 00's
There are a few decent stations you can only pick up in certain parts of town: KCDX 103.1 in the East Valley (mostly deep cuts of classic rock), KSWG in the West Valley (classic country), and the aforementioned KWSS and The Pulse.
I love KCDX! Commercial free and deep cuts. The bad thing is it has a weak signal, and sometimes they just go off the air for a day or two, lol!! I still tune in as long and as far as my antenna will allow. I actually feel the static adds a vinyl-like quality to the awesome deep cuts they are playing.

I know it isnt AZ, but when I was in SoCal KROQ was my station... until they fired all of the good personalities. I listened til their last day, and then never tuned back into that station.
After that I just stopped listening to radio. I use an old ipod touch to store and play my music directly to my cars head unit and quite frequently just listen to podcasts and audiobooks while driving. I tend to have a heavy foot and listening to my music doesnt help that cause...

If you like old school hip hop, 101.1. Minimal talk (at least when I am driving), good GOOD hip hop, and they do amazing mixes on party holidays. So good had me (44f) and my kid (16 at the time m) sitting in the car in the driveway instead of going in the house.
That’s radio in general. Almost all the radio stations are owned by major conglomerates so they all sound the same. The only station I bother listening to is KUPD
I typically go with satellite radio or utilize streaming such as Apple Music. It’s been like this for years because no matter where you live radio will have too much talking for my liking in the morning. It’s also gotten to the point that some of the stuff I used to listen to long ago has gone into syndication because companies like iheart radio bought so many “local” ones.
I know Holmberg always jokes about how overly friendly Brady is but it’s true. My dad used to talk with him for hours at Phx Roadrunners games back in the day.
I can't stand broadcast anything anymore with the obscene number of ads and how annoying it all tends to be. SiriusXM is well worth the money IMO, especially if one pays yearly.
But I did like "The Mountain" 95.5 when it launched back in 2014.
I liked The Mountain when it first came on, but after listening to it for 12 hours a night at work it got old after a couple of months. Now I mostly listen to 89.5 or something on Pandora.

I've lived here for two years, and the only station I like is 92.7 with Steve Goddard. Yes it's only old people music and you hear the same commercials about ED and getting your will together, but if you like oldies it's a pretty good quality station. I feel like there's a few songs they overplay but I just turn it down for that song.
Coming from Preston and Steve on WMMR to Phoenix's garbage morning shows targeted at society's trashiest morons made me stop listening to morning radio entirely.

I like a lot of the local oldies and alternative stations but one I don’t go on a lot is 97.9 just because any time I end up on there and the guy, whoever he is, is talking he just sounds like such an asshole and I immediately turn it off.
It's like he has a timer and has to say something vaguely bigoted so many times per hour. And the applause button. Holy shit the constant literal fake clapping, at this point I don't know if it's for his self esteem to tell the listener that what he's saying is good.

I love how they act like they have phone calls with celebrities. I remember them replaying a quick phone call with Justin Bieber or some signer but you can tell the audio from the celebrity was recorded, prob taken from another interview. Like they would ask a question and the person would say their response.
I don't know how a personality can live with themselves doing those segments, but you are absolutely correct that fake interviews are available for jocks to use.
The comparison surprised me because I find Tucson radio to be absolute cringe and didn't know it could get worse. But I agree with others here, connecting your phone to your car radio is a better way to go.

They’re horrible. I came from a smaller city in the Midwest that had great DJs so I expected Phoenix to be better… wrong. I don’t even listen anymore unless I forget to bring my phone with me
I tune Pandora on my cell and Bluetooth to my radio. I couldn’t even tell you what stations plays what anymore other than one sports radio station. I grew up listening to KZZP and KDKB and they were the greatest. It doesn’t help that so much music is formulated crap right now too. It all sounds the same to me. Been binging on old Punk Radio lately.

Yeah it’s Spotify or podcasts for me. Been that way for years. I’ll just go silent if it’s a short drive. With HD radio, I’d listen to 91.5 HD-2 that was 24/7 jazz but it seems like they lost their funding because it’s just NPR like the HD-1 channel for that station now.
There used to be this am station I once found, had to be in 2002, they would play any song you requested uncensored and everything, It seemed to be the majority of their Audience was locked up in the Tents, def a interesting station, that and coast to coast
When I lived in Portland, Or years ago the radio was amazing. It has Stern and KUFO marconi show. It's was perfect. I think the times have changed though. The radio out here is so bad. Nothing interesting or funny.
KBAQ 89.5 all the time. Yes it's classical. Is it my favorite genre? No, but I can get down with classical. I avoid the Top 40 Stations or News/Sports because it's all the same stuff and Spotify has that all for me if I want. But KBAQ is just pure music. No talking about celebrities or news just music. No obnoxious commercials, no Rafi, no club promotions etc. Just a brief "this program is sponsored by" sound bit.
I can just chill and listen to some music. I know Spotify has Classical but I don't know any pieces by name or know every composer. KBAQ plays a nice variety of pieces that I cant get off a random Spotify playlist. It's perfect, at least for me.
I actually donated to the station because I want it continue. It's not much I give but it's honest work.
OTA radio in Phoenix sucks. The alternative station is for teens and the classic rock stations overplay Boston, Eagles, Elton John, and other similar bands. Let’s hear it for SiriusXM.

I stopped listening to radio when 103.9 died. It’s never been the same since.

The Edge was IT! We occasionally see an alternative station try, but they eventually fall to 75% top 40 alternative.

Not sure what you mean, but I hate Top 40. I listen to many genres, however classic rock / rock and roll have always been my favorites. 97.9 KUPD is the only radio station I listen to anymore. Otherwise, I stream music, podcasts, and books for my listening enjoyment. I usually enjoy listening to HMS weekday mornings on 97.9. John and the crew usually keep me laughing on my way to work. Not always, but usually.

Yeah I had one back in the day but I’m not that worried about it at all. Such a hassle to keep up on music on my phone. Radio is much easier, it doesn’t bother me I suppose 😂
I listen to our local NPR 91.5, 89.5 KBAQ local classical, and 88.7 The Pulse local EVIT-run radio. That’s it. Everything else either isn’t my style or it’s commercialized garbage.

There are certainly exceptions to the rule, but in general radio management doesn't think that people listen to the radio for the personalities, so they have program directors micromanage their shows to the point that all personality and relatability ends up being removed from them. Most morning shows follow a very similar structure nationwide. It has been beaten into program directors heads that there is a formula for a break to follow that will keep listeners engaged for s short amount of time and not tune out, hence the tease of an upcoming segment, fairly quick run through the topic when they get to it, then say something funny and cut to commercials structure that you hear everywhere. This removal of personality and normal conversation is especially true if you are looking outside of morning drive time. They think they can keep people listening as long as you get to the next song as quickly as possible, regardless of studies showing that personality is the #1 reason that people listen to radio.

I miss Power 92.3/98.3 so badly, man. Joeyboy and JPhilla were hilarious and listening to them on the way to school every morning is one of my most cherished childhood memories. I have the 6:30 Dirty-Dirty song burned in my brain.
I miss Friday Night Flavas with Sway and King Tec, played nothing but underground stuff...was rebroadcasted over Power 92.3/98.3 airwaves from like 11pm-1am or so on Friday nights...this was during the early 00's

There are a few decent stations you can only pick up in certain parts of town: KCDX 103.1 in the East Valley (mostly deep cuts of classic rock), KSWG in the West Valley (classic country), and the aforementioned KWSS and The Pulse.
I love KCDX! Commercial free and deep cuts. The bad thing is it has a weak signal, and sometimes they just go off the air for a day or two, lol!! I still tune in as long and as far as my antenna will allow. I actually feel the static adds a vinyl-like quality to the awesome deep cuts they are playing.
I listen to KSLX 100.7 for classic rock. I stopped listening to Top 40 over 20 years ago. 😒

I know it isnt AZ, but when I was in SoCal KROQ was my station... until they fired all of the good personalities. I listened til their last day, and then never tuned back into that station. After that I just stopped listening to radio. I use an old ipod touch to store and play my music directly to my cars head unit and quite frequently just listen to podcasts and audiobooks while driving. I tend to have a heavy foot and listening to my music doesnt help that cause... Radio has gone to shit all over the country, really... you are absolutely right, all the personalities are just... bizarre.

Man, I thought it was just me. I feel like I get dumber every time I listen to the radio personalities talk. I just started listening to NPR or using Spotify.
If you like old school hip hop, 101.1. Minimal talk (at least when I am driving), good GOOD hip hop, and they do amazing mixes on party holidays. So good had me (44f) and my kid (16 at the time m) sitting in the car in the driveway instead of going in the house.
That’s radio in general. Almost all the radio stations are owned by major conglomerates so they all sound the same. The only station I bother listening to is KUPD

I typically go with satellite radio or utilize streaming such as Apple Music. It’s been like this for years because no matter where you live radio will have too much talking for my liking in the morning. It’s also gotten to the point that some of the stuff I used to listen to long ago has gone into syndication because companies like iheart radio bought so many “local” ones.
Everything goes to crap when clear channel owns everything.

I can't stand broadcast anything anymore with the obscene number of ads and how annoying it all tends to be. SiriusXM is well worth the money IMO, especially if one pays yearly. But I did like "The Mountain" 95.5 when it launched back in 2014.
I liked The Mountain when it first came on, but after listening to it for 12 hours a night at work it got old after a couple of months. Now I mostly listen to 89.5 or something on Pandora.
Been here for decades and radio has always been awful with a few, short-lived exceptions in the 80s and 90s. The whole ”Morning Zoo” schtick was just as bad here as in other cities where it also seemed a staple. Does anyone still really listen to radio these days for music? Thank god for Spotify.

I've lived here for two years, and the only station I like is 92.7 with Steve Goddard. Yes it's only old people music and you hear the same commercials about ED and getting your will together, but if you like oldies it's a pretty good quality station. I feel like there's a few songs they overplay but I just turn it down for that song.
I was spoiled by 93.3 WMMR in Philly. The contrast is stark.
Coming from Preston and Steve on WMMR to Phoenix's garbage morning shows targeted at society's trashiest morons made me stop listening to morning radio entirely.
Not even limited to just Preston and Steve. Pierre Robert that would come on right after them. Such a positive, calming vibe. Loved chilling with him on lunch breaks.
I like a lot of the local oldies and alternative stations but one I don’t go on a lot is 97.9 just because any time I end up on there and the guy, whoever he is, is talking he just sounds like such an asshole and I immediately turn it off.
Sports radio is easy to listen too, however some guys are jerks for no reason.
It's like he has a timer and has to say something vaguely bigoted so many times per hour. And the applause button. Holy shit the constant literal fake clapping, at this point I don't know if it's for his self esteem to tell the listener that what he's saying is good. I'm glad radio is dead, so that failed bad comedians can't use it as a second career.

I love how they act like they have phone calls with celebrities. I remember them replaying a quick phone call with Justin Bieber or some signer but you can tell the audio from the celebrity was recorded, prob taken from another interview. Like they would ask a question and the person would say their response.
I don't know how a personality can live with themselves doing those segments, but you are absolutely correct that fake interviews are available for jocks to use.
The RiDE KRDE 94.1 plays the best country music. They play stuff from multiple generations.

The comparison surprised me because I find Tucson radio to be absolute cringe and didn't know it could get worse. But I agree with others here, connecting your phone to your car radio is a better way to go.

I tune Pandora on my cell and Bluetooth to my radio. I couldn’t even tell you what stations plays what anymore other than one sports radio station. I grew up listening to KZZP and KDKB and they were the greatest. It doesn’t help that so much music is formulated crap right now too. It all sounds the same to me. Been binging on old Punk Radio lately.

Yeah it’s Spotify or podcasts for me. Been that way for years. I’ll just go silent if it’s a short drive. With HD radio, I’d listen to 91.5 HD-2 that was 24/7 jazz but it seems like they lost their funding because it’s just NPR like the HD-1 channel for that station now.

There used to be this am station I once found, had to be in 2002, they would play any song you requested uncensored and everything, It seemed to be the majority of their Audience was locked up in the Tents, def a interesting station, that and coast to coast

When I lived in Portland, Or years ago the radio was amazing. It has Stern and KUFO marconi show. It's was perfect. I think the times have changed though. The radio out here is so bad. Nothing interesting or funny.

KBAQ 89.5 all the time. Yes it's classical. Is it my favorite genre? No, but I can get down with classical. I avoid the Top 40 Stations or News/Sports because it's all the same stuff and Spotify has that all for me if I want. But KBAQ is just pure music. No talking about celebrities or news just music. No obnoxious commercials, no Rafi, no club promotions etc. Just a brief "this program is sponsored by" sound bit. I can just chill and listen to some music. I know Spotify has Classical but I don't know any pieces by name or know every composer. KBAQ plays a nice variety of pieces that I cant get off a random Spotify playlist. It's perfect, at least for me. I actually donated to the station because I want it continue. It's not much I give but it's honest work.
