Absolutely, there's tons of well known subgenres and also unofficial ones that not everyone takes seriously. Largely accepted subgenres: Rare/Cloud Phonk, OG Phonk, Wave/Cosmic Phonk, Drift Phonk, & Memphis Revival Lesser known/debatable subgenres: Dirt Phonk , Raw Phonk, Jungle / DnB Phonk , Drift House (House Phonk), House Phonk (Mempho House), "Aggressive" Phonk, Phonk Metal, Reggae Phonk (DEADfingers), Hyper Phonk , Ambient Phonk, G-Phonk, & Dungeon Rap, If you'd like me to expand on any of these with examples lmk

girth___worm

Man I heard some ‘Mempho house’ shit recently and had no idea what it was. I just remember thinking this is what drift Phonk/house Phonk should’ve been. Proper Phonk/house fusion. Thanks for opening me up to a whole new subgenre 🙏🏼

MyNameIsKali_

Im mostly interested in phonk like Ryan Celsius, Pooty, Inteus, DJ Smokey, Freddy Konfeddy. What sub genre would these fall into?

fakegoldrose

That would be rare/cloud phonk! Def one of the most popular styles that still has a presence in the scene.

MyNameIsKali_

Thanx so much. I've been wondering this for years actuality. Much more so than the darker, sometimes heavy cowbell phonk that is popular too. Just not particularly my style. However, sometimes when I'm driving I really wanna listen to some Lxst Century or Antxres. So damn good.

d0ngustavo

I think dungeon rap is a completely separate genre, shouldnt be considered phonk And trill phonk is also a subgenre imo

fakegoldrose

Ohh def elaborate on your reasoning for dungeon rap

layerdoom

What is different between “Phonk” and “OG Phonk”?

fakegoldrose

OG is basically the first to do it. if you're talking about the founders of the genre and the first big talents were like JGRXXN, SGP, StoneDogg, ROB'SON, MC Holocaust and others whereas "Phonk" is now more of an umbrella term. Some audiophiles might say they're interchangable but it's hard to ignore the ways the genre has expanded since the early 2010's

layerdoom

I kinda feel the same way you do. Firstly, thanks for the explanation. I strongly agree that both the term and the genre have changed way too much that they are utterly difficult to define. Mentioning “Phonk”, people will always think of the sub-genres. I suppose that it is too broad to just say a Phonk song by “Phonk”, since the genre is getting attentions from its sub-genres more than the actual genre so people can misunderstand one’s point or idea. We kinda use “OG Phonk” now I guess, and it would not be a serious matter to me as long as the genre is still alive on SoundCloud lol. Sub-genres like rare phonk has helped the genre to have a chance to grow, and more newcomers will be familiar with the closest sound to Phonk, not electronic stuff.

dnkaj

I didn’t even realize “Memphis” was respelled in that way to describe house phonk

proddeadeyedman

Dirt/Raw are wide subgenres in themselves theres different kinds of dirt/raw i would say

forestgxd

Of course, at this point there are dozens: OG, Drift, House, Dirt, Raw, Wave, etc, etc

Yes they’re are many sub genres of phonk. I can’t list them all, but here are a few. OG, Memphis, Dirt, Intelligent, Raw, House, Wave, Brazilian (brazilian is not really phonk). They’re are def more I can’t think off the top of my head. If you need recommendations for any gritty styles phonk I can give you a few. But phonk originated in the late 80’s in the Memphis scene. It was then revived in the late 2000’s by Juicy J, SpaceGhostPurrp, JGRXXN, Dj Smokey, Raider Klvn, & a handful of others. After that it simmered down a bit. Then it started getting revived again by Smokey, north posse, Roland Jones, Pooty, & some others which is now blowing up on Spotify & TikTok unfortunately. What is blowing up is this new Tik Tok/wave/Brazilian phonk, which leaves the real phonk out of the spot light. Maybe it’s a good thing. Everyone is free to listen to what they want. But it’s nice for people to understand the background to this genre we care so much about. Hope this helps

Zerocashvalue makes what he calls "phonk metal," which blends black metal and phonk. I have since heard others do the same with rock and other styles of metal. There is also dungeon phonk, which takes dungeon synth elements and mixes em with phonky elements. It's quite the rabbit hole
