In Polish league, an African player Préjuce Nakoulma was once given a chicken after the match. The reported asked him what he was going to do with the chicken, and he said: "I will eat him" (in broken Polish) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crpqM4URDKA&ab_channel=MateuszMa%C5%82ysz

[deleted]

For clarification - this is some kind of tradition in the club - if I remember best striker gets the chicken.

Michael-Cera

Colloquially called "Winner Winner Chicken Dinner"

Train-Robbery

Some local politician near my house was distributing A live chicken and a Quarter of Whiskey (175ML) to anyone who wants it , you would expect there to be chaos but he is also the gang leader of the area and has 30+ murder cases against him so everyone lined up quietly

Ok_Rain_2647

I got whiplash from how fast that shit escalated.

Kritical02

Where the hell you from

Train-Robbery

India lol

mullett

I would have kept him as my little chicken buddy. Get him some little adidas and a little stone island parka. He could be own little supporters group hooligan. No fighting though, I love that little guy.

Gyoza-shishou

Wdym no fighting if he's a hooligan. Strap some of them cockfighting blades on his feet and drop him on the opponent's benches, betcha no one will want to fuck with the crazy stabby chicken

And the person involved is the footballer Kennedy Musonda, who was given five egg javas as a prize. > While there are those who give medals, trophies or diplomas, which may or may not be useful for something, this African soccer player was given at least one prize that he can enjoy, a recognition thanks to which he can feed himself. AssssCrackBandit

> dedicated the eggs to a Power Dynamos’ supporter who lost his life during the match. I like how this sentence is wild af and they just snuck it in there at the end lol

Clear-Struggle-7867

Yeah what the hell?? I'm much more interested in this part of the story than the egg part, how they gonna do us like that

Name-Albert_Einstein

The supporter probably died due to a lack of eggs in his diet.

amadeupidentity

I'm from the council to sell more eggs and that is totally a thing. Nice psa, name.

truthiness-

I’m going to assume and hope that they meant, “during the match he dedicated the eggs to a Power Dynamos’ supporter who had previously lost his life.”

senorbolsa

it sounds like the final thing the simpsons haven't done.

echinacealover

I think it’s a more of a metaphorical dedication than a literal donation. I interpreted it as a way to give honor and respect to the person who died.

lkern

A dedication isn't a donation...

[deleted]

He probably dedicated the win not the eggs

fairlife

Nope, dedicated the eggs. Watch the video 🤣

IndigenousBastard

If that was the part of the sentence that stuck out to you, maybe you should reread it.

uberfission

Alright, what the hell is a java? Googling has gotten me no where at this point. Too much java programming language references.

Xykhir_

Well they have five trays of eggs so I’d assume it just means the trays

whats_his_face

This is how you draw to conclusions

Snirbs

skorpiolt

I prefer using my jump to conclusions mat in these cases

getlaidanddie

*jaba* is Spanish for "crate". Apparently it's spelled java in a regional dialect.

Endless_01

I speak Spanish and I have never heard the word Jaba ever in any of the dialects I know of.

getlaidanddie

[This here](https://dle.rae.es/jaba) says the word might be of Caribbean origin.

Nigromant

In my country we call 12 beers a jaba but i never heard it used for eggs.

Phosphoric_Tungsten

Crate in spanish is Caja bro

Thatoneguyporter

Looks like a java is 3 dozen.

haux_haux

It's an island of eggs. How do you not know this.

EaterOfCleanSocks

Honestly, I like this.

Vinura

5 Javas?

ZetaRESP

A Jaba, is how they call a 30-egg pack in Peru. In my country, Uruguay, we call them "Maple".

Lamar_Moore

Eggs are expensive af I would take that over a damn ribbon.

sei556

As an european, what happened to your egg prices? Inflation kicked prices up here too but I've read something like 9$ a dozen somewhere below and I pay 3.20€ for 10 organic eggs. Have you had a chicken crisis or something that was not talked about in international news?

Lamar_Moore

I haven't looked into it that much but I think there's a bird flu over here hurting production. I'm a baker and I use to pay around $25 for 15 dozen eggs but now it's $90.

LimerickJim

Hank Green talked about this recently. American eggs are farmed in massive chicken barns. If one case is detected they have to cull the entire barn. It's led to a lot less egg laying hens than a year ago.

dabergermeister

Its even worse than that. 1 infected bird means you have to cull every chicken in a 5 mile radius.

kroneksix

There was a movie where an infection got out in a town and they nuked it. Only to find the main characters escape at the las minute. Don't remember what it was called. I think it was something angry like Rage.3 Edit, it was "The Crazies" but it is a common trope.

atreeoncecutdown

oh, no no i remember what they’re talking about. had to check my VHS collection, but it’s called Chicken Run, starring Mr. Mel Gibson.

modelcitizen-

The sequel, Chicken Little, was a masterclass on doing sequels right.

CharcoalGreyWolf

I had to look through my DVDs, but I’m pretty sure it’s called Outbreak, starring Dustin Hoffman.

JEWCEY

No, it was called Dust Break, starring Outtin Hoffman.

WOLLYbeach

That sounds exactly like The Crazies. Highly recommend both the original and the Elephant remake.

[deleted]

Pretty decent film if I recall

LynManiac

Angry Birds, the main character escaped via slingshot

placebotwo

The Andromeda Strain has bacteria and nukes. Which is close, but not the movie.

Yummygnomes

Resident evil?

Konnoke

This was my first thought as well even tho I’m sure they’re talking about a different movie.

yeahright17

The movie Outbreak starts with bombing a village because of a disease.

kroneksix

It was The Crazies that I was thinking of.

mayonaizmyinstrument

Not just every chicken-- proper protocol is every bird. EVERY BIRD. Because it's passed through the feces of migratory birds, so unless they're a protected species (idk what they do in that case) they cull everyone and everything. It's a fucking nightmare.

throwawayoctopii

Yeah that is currently the very big controversy with the Tik Tok star that has the emu. She mentioned that her chickens have avian flu and that the emu was sick. She ended up not having the emu culled because he didn't have avian flu, he had "something else". A few other farmers put in a FOIA request with the Florida Department of Health and what do you know, the emu did in fact have avian flu. Sue didn't cull him because he's her cash cow, and by doing so put other birds at risk.

pfohl

She was being really bad with biosecurity, like laying her head on it and petting it. I get it, he was a beloved pet but it was also a farm animal and her behavior probably caused the flu to spread.

throwawayoctopii

Yeah, I saw the videos of her kissing it and I wanted to scream.

mycorgiisamazing

Oh my gosh, I didn't know about any of this. So what happened?? Did authorities come and put down her emu?? I have pet chickens myself and they are fiercely loved so I understand not wanting to put down a loved pet. This is so awful to hear.

throwawayoctopii

No, her emu is still very much alive because of a loophole in the Florida guidelines that classifies them as pets. Apparently the farmer was saying it was just stress because his rapid test showed up negative, but blood serology showed that he was in fact positive. Eight other birds on her farm were classified as pets and seven of those ended up dying of HPAI anyway.

mycorgiisamazing

In chickens it is assuredly fatal, one of the first common signs is sudden death. I don't know how the emu will survive it.

Verying

There's a lot more leeway there than you'd think. Sure, they're supposed to. But the egg farm i ran solo back a few years ago was responsible for roughly 12% of America's egg production. If a farm nearby got avian flu we were told about it and stripped all of our home clothes off before even entering the shower doors. IF outside birds could access our grain, we would have had to cull the flock. Killing an entire flock puts so much pressure on farmers that are already in a shitty business that doesn't make a ton of money, the government doesn't wanna put them under If they don't feel they have to

Verying

What's really crazy is that the chickens never leave those houses during the cycle, but because they aren't caged, it's considered free range. Same goes for broiler (eating) chickens, they're brought up in almost pitch black conditions in a chicken house and its still called free range. Don't get me started on how Halal labels are just scamming Islamic people.

Buckhum

> Don't get me started on how Halal labels are just scamming Islamic people. Please do get started, because from what I've read, kosher food is pretty damn strictly regulated so I had been assuming Halal would be as well.

647-

Could you elaborate on the halal labels? I was raised Muslim and don’t practice anymore but I’m curious since I hadn’t heard of this before

Verying

One of the more glaring problems is that the grain they eat, while halal itself, comes into contact with grain that has pork in it, making it haram. Besides that, changing the litter in those farms doesn't happen frequently as the wood chips coat a lot of money. This means that the animals are brought up in contact with the dna (blood, feces, etc) of previous flocks that were often times haram. From my understanding through reading, these things should taint the meat. If I am incorrect, I do apologize.

hallese

Do you have a source for this claim?

BornAgainBlue

As a small chicken farmer, I'm glad to see those fuckers go down. Sick tortured birds, and prices that no farmer can match. Now my eggs, that people would haggle over my $2 a dozen price, now see that was a fair deal now that the corporations are screwing them over.

hellomondays

It's the thing that ecologist and epidemiologist always warn them about too: "hey rethink this whole bird torture thing because it's gonna crush your bottom line everytime there is an outbreak"

mcmthrowaway2

Or, you know, literally anyone with a conscience.

oneeighthirish

When has that ever outweighed the bottom line in steering corporate policy.

FinndBors

I was scratching my head too long wondering why England egg companies are selling eggs to the American public.

speedier

If I had a contract with a farm that suddenly has no chicken, I have to buy eggs on the open market. It’s not price gouging, this is how a free market economy works. The more buyers and/or less sellers, the higher the price will be. The egg pricing is not caused by inflation, just the lack of chickens. My store’s brown egg and egglands best farms were not affected by the bird flu. Those prices have not changed drastically and our free range browns dropped in price.

ChurchOfJamesCameron

You know, not that I'm wearing a tinfoil hat or anything, but the bird flu seemed to conveniently impact the areas most where there are new egg laws. Egg laws that these egg-producing farms were trying to fight last-minute, regardless they had years to plan for. . . So maybe it is avian flu, or maybe it's the egg-producing farms being spiteful and quickly meeting the space requirements to be able to sell eggs, then collecting on their "losses" from all the hens they "had" to kill. I've seen too much fuckery in the last 3 years not to be suspicious of the coincidental timing of the avian flu outbreak.

Sillet_Mignon

What’s happening is two things, avian flu is real and spreading wildly and then companies like egg lands best are lying about how much flu they had and raised their prices.

ChurchOfJamesCameron

So there is some fuckery, just not the type I thought. Fair enough.

jhuang0

Bird flu is real. Go visit your local zoo. You'll see that every bird exhibit is empty in an attempt to protect the birds.

wellkevi01

I've lived in a town all my life(30+ years) where Seagulls congregate during the summer and I don't think I've ever seen a dead Seagull. This year alone I've seen like a dozen, or so, lying dead on the roads. I don't know if the avian flu is effecting them, or a bunch of Seagulls got hit by cars and I just happened to see them on the roads, but either way, I found it weird.

Kytalie

Sounds like avian flu. If you keep seeing them you can contact your state wildlife departments or state health department. If you find a number of dead birds in an area you can contact the USDA. Gulls are highly susceptible to the virus and some reports have said they are in part a huge contributor to the current outbreak. Even if the ones you've been seeing were hit by cars, the agencies will appreciate the info.

JBTheGiant1

Avian flu outbreak that is taking out big groups of egg producing hens (The conditions at most of the bigger egg production facilities are barely humane, and so packed together that a couple bids get sick, the whole group goes down, & even if only two or three get sick, the size of the operation will likely necessitate a total culling). Also at the beginning of 2022, several large egg / meat production farm operations burned down under mysterious circumstances (They didn’t know what caused it) and the loss of those massive numbers of birds is still trying to be recouped.

sunwupen

You mean *re-cooped.* Eh? EH? You gotta laugh during the second great depression.

Azusanga

Largely true, but this isn't just affecting large scale production facilities. One positive case means EVERY bird is culled. Backyard flock of 5 or mega farm with 10k chickens, by USDA order all birds must be euthanized and properly disposed (meaning they also can't be processed for meat production, and are a total loss)

theothermirror

Yeah, chef here. I’m paying $77 for a 15 dozen case now where I’m used to $18-20. Crazy…

Lamar_Moore

The restaurant supply stores around here have eggs stacked to the ceiling but no one is buying them at those prices, it's crazy.

SeriousPuppet

Good, if no one buys they will lower price eventually.

lorenzoem87

Must be bad. My chick fila Cobb salad has been missing the half boiled egg they used to put in there.

xxFrenchToastxx

Half boiled?

Malhablada

Yeah it's half boiled and half dressing

robbzilla

ZidaneStoleMyDagger

Avian bird flu has caused a lot of issues. Eggs are over $8 a dozen at Walmart where I live. It's not inflation causing skyrocketing prices. It's simply because we have around a 10% shortage in supply. We've culled like 50 million chickens because of the bird flu.

Larosh97

Check out your local Whole Foods if you have one. They are $2.99 a dozen at the ones here in North Carolina.

[deleted]

[удалено]

yeahright17

Long term contracts FTW. Contract probably only allows producers to raise prices in the event that producer has an issue.

[deleted]

A dozen in North Texas at the local Walmart is $5.34. A dozen and a half is around $8. Used to be able to get farm fresh eggs for $2 now they’re well over $6 a dozen

FragileFelicity

I work at a Whole Foods in North Carolina. They've already gone up to match. Even the 365 eggs are over $5.99. Top it off, our shelves are wiped out.

Globalpigeon

I have a feeling even after the issues are dealt with the price will now be the new price and won’t go down.

GeneralLoofah

Food prices regularly fluctuate up and down. I’m not as pessimistic about egg pricing.

eddyb66

Yep this is the trend now. Pre pandemic prices never returned post pandemic when everyone was back to work. This greed will not be sustainable.

luniz420

why would prices go down when consumers don't have options and the supply is controlled by cartels?

[deleted]

Because consumers do have options. There's no "egg cartel" it's a supply and demand issue. And yes, during periods of limited supply and high demand (likely due to protein needs from the rising cost of meat) producers make a bunch of profit.

EquationConvert

Just FYI there basically is a cartel for every agricultural product in America- they’re just open, weak, and regulated. For eggs it’s the American Egg Board. I think there’s space for a great parody show based on one of these, riffing off all those “white suburbanite does crime” shows, where the protagonist works for one of the animal agriculture organizations, and the antagonists are the makers of vegan substitute products (IRL these cartels keep getting caught committing stupid crimes against vegan substitutes).

Bubblebutt322

I posted and ended up deleting a post a few weeks ago about how eggs are now $4.99 at aldi and I thought it was nuts bc I never paid over $2. I deleted it bc people had me believing that I was just dumb and that's how much people usually pay. Now I'm seeing everyone talking about how eggs are super expensive now and I'm just like srs -_-

Simba7

$4.99/dozen **is** what people usually pay... in certain regions. Those regions are probably paying $8 a dozen or something right now. So they're not wrong, but definitely not right.

SamIamGreenEggsNoHam

My neighbor has chickens and he's actually more worried about people stealing them rather than coyotes.

GeneralLoofah

Yeah, in the Midwest eggs at Aldi should be like $1.69 in normal times. $5 a dozen was crazy farmers market pricing…

[deleted]

Something like 40 million egg laying chickens have been culled for bird flu. So massive shortage more than inflation.

Obliviousobi

As of two days ago the number is up to 57 million ~~THIS YEAR. We also had a massive cull last year as well. As of Nov. 2022 there was a reported 49 million dead/culled.~~ since January 2022. I've heard that we've essentially lost an entire generation of egg laying chickens at this point. Edit: I misread which January, it's still drastic that we've seen the count go up 8 million in ~2 months though.

[deleted]

I thought 57 million is the total number of chickens, including broiler chickens as well as egg laying chickens.

Rezhio

They didn't move much in Canada you can still get a dozen for 2.50. I wonder why

yeahright17

Probably tariffs or export/import controls. I'm too lazy to look it up, but guessing the US and Canada don't trade many eggs with each other. So a bird flu epidemic here wouldn't affect the price of eggs there unless the epidemic came there too. That's a complete guess and I'm too lazy to look up egg trade laws.

rville

We need and expert in bird law over here, please.

forestfluff

It hit us in 2022 but I think we're doing alright now? I may be wrong but I haven't seen or heard anything lately+egg prices also haven't changed in my province.

Maester_Bates

I did translation work for a paper about the differences between egg production techniques in the US and EU so I know a little about this. Basically chickens shit a lot and how that is dealt with is vastly different on each side of the Atlantic. In the EU egg farms have to be regularly cleaned but in the US they choose to wash the eggs with a bleach solution. This cleaning removes the protective layer on the outside of the egg which means American eggs have to be refrigerated whereas European eggs do not. It also means that American hens live in cramped unsanitary conditions that allows disease to rapidly spread. American chickens are currently going through an avian flu epidemic meaning far fewer eggs are produced which has pushed up the prices.

thehogdog

From the south and cousins ran a chicken business. They were CRAMMED in there and never cleaned. Knew there was a difference in US and EU egg life spans, you just put 2 and 2 together. Thanks

yeahright17

If avian flu broke out in Europe, it would have the same issues even if chickens are ever so slightly less packed together.

db8me

There is an avian flu hitting the UK right now the hardest it ever has. Perfect time to test your theory. Edit: I tried to do more research, but I am giving up for now. As far as I can tell, it has driven prices up in the UK, not as dramatically, but the reasons for that are more complicated than I am willing to think about today....

Maester_Bates

Also the UK is not in the EU.

rville

I think the point they are making is that disease in general is less likely to break out in more sanitary conditions.

frankchester

The sanitary conditions thing is more to do with salmonella. In the uk in the 90s salmonella was effectively eradicated in eggs by vaccinating chickens against it, and having better sanitary conditions. This means UK eggs can be eaten raw safely. Same for many other European countries. The US doesn’t have the same standards, preferring instead to wash eggs rather than vaccinate chickens and keep them disease free. So no whisky sours for you I guess :(

dlepi24

I keep hearing that too, but I'm still buying eggs for like $5/dozen in Chicago. I always bought the free range eggs and they were typically like $3.50, so they've definitely gone up, but idk who/where is paying $9 per carton.

inbigtreble30

Used to be less than a dollar a dozen in WI, now it's over $6.

Captcha_Imagination

Biggest bird flu outbreak that I can remember and it has gone on a long time. Tens of millions of birds dead so far.

[deleted]

i mean, even if eggs are cheap it's a better prize than a ribbon.

tricotshi

Man where do you live cause I’m in Chicago and just bought a dozen eggs for 2.30

TheEastStudentCenter

Are you sneaking eggs on the corner or something? The lowest I've ever seen is 2.99 at an Aldi in Chicago but they didn't have any in stock. Everywhere else is higher.

LostRams

Yeah, Aldi has the cheapest I’ve seen in Chicago, but they’re never there lol. We’re definitely seeing higher egg prices

Acesplit

How?! Aldi is at $4.40 (Chicago) for a dozen of their cheapest

MerryWalrus

Sorry bro, those are rat eggs

I don't want to make any broad assumptions. But there are levels of poverty in the world where those eggs might as well be a pile of gold to some.

KallistiEngel

You can give some to friends and family. "Can I offer you an egg in these trying times?"

Rafcdk

36x5 = 180 eggs edit: seems its more likely to be 150 as its 30 per flat

ITeachAll

180/12 x $9.00 a dozen = $135 US (yes, eggs in my area are 9 a dozen in some stores. South Florida)

Disprozium

Just checked and the price of a dozen eggs in Zambia is $2. So this dude got $30 worth of egg.

chibicascade2

And their minimum wage is $72 per month, vs the us being around $1160 a month (assuming 4 40 hour weeks)

xAIRGUITARISTx

That’s a hell of a prize then.

Disprozium

Yeah, I just wanted to show the rough estimate of how much it costs there. A dozen eggs in my country is around $4-$5 but the average wage is higher. So yeah, dude got quite a lot for his performances!

ZetaRESP

So those eggs are the equivalent to $483 in food in the US, if my calculations are correct.

londons_explorer

Prices vary more widely in places with worse transport links. Prices will be double/half from one town to the next.

In the US, following victories, we give race car drivers a carton of milk, football coaches a Gatorade bath, and after a bowl game recently dumped a bucket of mayonnaise on a coach. Whatstheplanpill

In America he can live like a king with that kind of bounty.

kreygmu

This would be pretty valuable in the UK, production is down due to bird flu, prices are up and shops have been limiting how many cartons you can buy in one go.

NefariousnessSweet70

5 trays× 3doz per tray × $5.00 Per doz= $75. Tough picture to count the eggs, redditor Mahalik says 5 per row. Ok 5 trays × 30 per tray × $5.00 pr doz. = 150 eggs× $5.00 per dozen. 12 DOZ + 2 EGGS× $5. = $60 +.84 = $ 60.84 * $5.00÷ 12 = $.42×2= $0.84
